The Home Sweet Home

Cholsey and Wallingford South, South Oxfordshire
02/01/2019: Stopped at the Home Sweet Home for lunch on our way to a New Years eve weekend away stay.
29/12/2018: Had a lovely family pub lunch here today. It wasn’t too busy but I think that was due to the Xmas effect on digestion systems.

The Greyhound Free House & Grill

Sonning Common, South Oxfordshire, 20-30£
17/12/2018: We are always happy to make seasonal visits to relatives close by as it provides a reason to visit The Greyhound for lunch. Mine host and his team go out of their way to make the whole establishment festive and welcoming and unlike certain other establishments do not 'cash in' by increasing prices or reducing quantity or quality. It makes our 160 mile round trip well worth the effort.
17/12/2018: A return visit confirmed my earlier view that there is no finer restaurant in the area. Food is perfectly cooked, beautifully presented, offers classic and modern choices and although not cheap, great value. The pub is full of character and ambience and service efficient and really friendly. I cannot find fault and remain amazed The Greyhound does not have an even bigger following. AWT himself was in the kitchen, as was the case the last time we visited.

Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons

Great Milton, South Oxfordshire, >100£
01/01/2019: Great dining experience. I like the fact that they will take your order while you are having a drink in the living room, seating on a plush sofa, trying to decide, such a difficult task...
30/12/2018: 6 of us came here for lunch one Saturday in December and had the tasting menu with wine flight. It was wonderful, everything you imagine from a restaurant of this standard and reputation.

The Half Moon

Watlington, South Oxfordshire
18/12/2018: It's hard to find a restaurant which ticks every box when it comes to mixing the perfect pizza with a beautiful location and friendly welcoming customer service but The Half Moon absolutely does this!
14/12/2018: Never been disappointed eating here, always excellent food, good value for money and staff go that extra mile to cater for even the fussiest of eaters! Definitely recommend.

The Red Lion

Watlington, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
19/12/2018: Having booked a table earlier in the day we were looking forward to a good evening meal. The place was slowly filling up with fellow diners , so a reservation was a good idea. The ambiance was lovely and was warm and inviting. The menu was well chosen and well balanced not too large . With some nice daily specials. Starters and mains were excellent cooked perfectly and well presented. In particular my main of escalope of venison with creamed cabbage and triple cooked chips and a lovely accompanying sauce simple and perfect. We declined deserts but they were all very enticing and maybe next time , which is a must !! . Go you'll love it .
27/09/2018: I don't know why it has taken us so long to realise that The Red Lion had opened again with Olivier at the helm. We used to love the Sweet Olive and were so disappointed when he moved on. We used to love this restaurant when it was The Goose as well.

Shaun Dickens at The Boathouse

Henley South, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
17/12/2018: Wonderful location; great modern restaurant space; superb staff who do not fuss but are most attentive; excellent food made from fresh ingredients and cooked with great care.
16/12/2018: Great food (vegetarian tasting menu), classy atmosphere and attentive service - my wife and I we were impressed and definitely recommend the restaurant.

The Baskerville

Shiplake, South Oxfordshire
13/12/2018: Stopped in here on way home from shopping in Reading.
10/12/2018: During our first visit to Henley this gastropub was recommended for lunch. Easy to find, near Shiplake and just off the Reading road, there was plenty of parking and fortunately, (as we hadn’t booked), a number of tables free in the restaurant area. There was a choice of tasty looking bar snacks for c. £7.50 and the rarebit looked good, but we opted instead for a meal of flavoursome beef bourgignon (enjoyed by us both) followed by fruit crumble and chocolate fondant desserts. Service was excellent and attentive. The bar had interesting local beers and we could see why this pleasant atmosphered pub was a favourite with Thames walkers

Orwells at Shiplake

Shiplake, South Oxfordshire, 60-100£
17/12/2018: We live locally and have visited Orwells a few times over the years. We persisted in the earlier times where the food was pretty good, but the service not great and everything took too long. It's been consistently improving and last Saturday we had the best fine dining experience we have had for some time. Over the last couple of years we've been to the Hand & Flower, several of Heston's restaurants and other fine dining restaurants. The meal & experience on Saturday night was head & shoulders above all of them. Yes, Orwells is expensive - but it is no more expensive than the restaurants I just listed. The quality of the food has improved as the menu has become more focused. My wife and I ordered different items for all 3 courses and every one was outrageously good on both flavour and presentation. Fast becoming our favourite place to indulge ourselves, keep it up!
11/12/2018: Lovely location and a beautiful interior. We were welcomed by the very friendly staff and had delicious (£15) cocktails at the bar. The atmosphere is relaxed but smart. We dined here as a family group of 5 and did the 5-course menu with wine flight. The food was pretty good but lacked any real wow-factor and the main venison course was small with no veg (a pet hate of mine!). The wine flight wines were disappointing even though they were served with interesting information about them. Overall I felt this was a very expensive meal (£800) that left us feeling a bit underwhelmed. It does have potential though.

Luscombes Restaurant

Chiltern Woods, South Oxfordshire
06/12/2018: Simply a first class restaurant. Very professional in all that they do, from the warm welcome, to comfortable seating and setting, ambiance and atmosphere, a superb team with that skill whereby they anticipate what might be required next without being intrusive in any way. Invisibly at your service. The quality of the food and wine and value for money is unmatched in restaurants this close to London. Superb.
04/11/2018: We visited Luscombes at The Golden Ball for Sunday lunch as a group of 4 adults and 3 young children. We were extremely impressed from start to finish. The food was superb; the service impeccable and the atmosphere incredibly welcoming and pleasant. It was a real pleasure to dine at an establishment that is so well organised and run with skill and attention to detail. We knew we were on to a winner when the staff immediately offered to take orders for the hungry children ahead of everything else. It’s this kind of touch that sets Luscombes apart.

Houghton Tearoom

Forest Hill and Holton, South Oxfordshire, <20£
03/12/2018: We have been going to the tea room regularly now for 5 years, in fact from week two that Linda the owner opened. Linda's home made cakes are delicious and the cozy, friendly atmosphere is great. There are only ten seats so be prepared to share a table and make new friends as we have over the years. Its our favourite place to stop when out on a walk as do many walkers and we can highly recommend the food, whether a light lunch or a delicious slice of cake or afternoon cream tea you are going to fall in love! So whether visiting the area or passing by make this a pit stop it is well worth it.
04/11/2018: We stopped here for a late lunch. We found it excellent value with really delicious cakes, scones and drinks. What a find!

The Crown Inn

Aston Rowant, South Oxfordshire, 20-30£
29/12/2018: Five of us of all ages ate at The Crown on Friday - it was really good - the service was friendly but not intrusive and the food was really good - we had the burger, sea bass and fish pie. We will not hesitate to return.
22/12/2018: Came to celebrate my Grandma's birthday, and the Crown Inn was a perfect location. Would recommend to anyone

Anokhi Cuisine

Benson, South Oxfordshire
04/01/2019: Another fab takeaway, great poppadoms and pickle tray to start. Amazing service starts with friendly telephone lady to take the order, followed by fast, efficient and free delivery service to Berinsfield and ending in hot and tasty food. 5 * all round, thank you 😊
04/01/2019: Amazing restaurant experience. The food was incredibly delicious, and the wine to accompany it was perfect. Jasmine was a leaky waitress who made sure we had a lovely night. Would definitely recommend!

The Mole Inn

Garsington, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
25/11/2018: My wife and I stumbled on this restaurant on Saturday and choose the fixed price lunch, two courses. We were blown away by the quality of the food, atmosphere and exemplary service. Can not wait to go again
24/11/2018: I’ve been here several times now as it’s close to work (South Oxford business Park). I have to say this place is consistently good - a warm welcome and very good food. Good for small and big groups too. This time I had a ribeye steak and it was very good indeed. One suggestion....I prefer proper chips with a steak rather than fries. Reasonably priced for great food in a lovely pub.

Cafe Buendia

Henley North, South Oxfordshire
23/10/2018: Really nice food there and a great selection to I would highly recommend going there. Nicely placed in the centre of Henley
28/09/2018: We popped in for a light lunch and were delighted with the excellent pizza and friendly staff! We sat by the window, great for people watching and finished up sharing a slice of apple crumble cake.......which was incredible! We are fast becoming lunchtime regulars - decent fare for decent fare! As an extra bonus the customer toilet is spotless!

The Plough
