The Greyhound Free House & Grill

Sonning Common, South Oxfordshire, 20-30£
18/08/2018: It was a very busy Friday night and despite booking a table for 8.00pm we didn't manage to sit down at our table to gone 8.30. Our starters arrived at about 9.15 and mains about 10.00ish. So, service was slow but very attentive as usual. It seemed that a whole load of orders had gone to the kitchen at the same time and they must have been working flat out to serve them. Despite this, the food was all cooked and presented to the usual high standards.
16/08/2018: We called very late so were delighted when the very friendly lady found a corner for us in the restaurant and it only got better from there. The fennel and bacon soup was lovely and creamy, I loved the Thai green curry (thanks for not adding fresh coriander..), the chicken pies were delicious...we all left the restaurant having had a fabulous meal. Jamie, our waiter, was really pleasant and made us feel comfortable. This is fast becoming my most favourite place to eat...thanks Guys.

Le Manoir Aux Quat' Saisons

Great Milton, South Oxfordshire, >100£
18/08/2018: Since seeing Raymond Blanc on television I had always wanted to go to his restaurant. I was not disappointed. The setting of the manor house and the gardens is like a stage set with manicured lawns and flourishing vegetables. The staff are very attentive but not irritating. We had the non vegetarian tasting menu. Unfortuntely the whole table have to choose the same menu - I would love to have tried the vegetarian tasting menu but felt it was mean to impose it on my husband. This was my main reservation about the experience. We had five courses which were about the right size. My first course was superb [risotto of garden vegetables] and was swapped from main menu for the scallop course. My final course of an apricot dessert was delicious. The middle courses were less exciting - the cod was bland, the egg course a bit salty and the lamb too fatty - though this is quibbling as the whole meal was extremely good. Definitely a one off treat to remember.
17/08/2018: We took the garden tour and lunch. It was perfect in every way. For the garden tour there were only six of us and the gardener was excellent at explaining everything and answering questions. We were spoken to by Raymond Blanc. Canapes and drinks were followed by a superb lunch. The service was perfect and one was made to feel welcome.

The Home Sweet Home

Cholsey and Wallingford South, South Oxfordshire
12/09/2018: Delightful visit, so welcoming it felt as if it gave you a huge hug and food amazing too, thanks lynn and staff, we will be back
08/09/2018: Friendly and welcoming pub serving excellent food and drinks. Outside seating area and dog and kid friendly. Cosy inside with log fire.

Shaun Dickens at The Boathouse

Henley South, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
27/08/2018: We must review this sensational restaurant located on the bank of the Thames. We enjoyed the most wonderful gastronomic Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago - don’t be shy to be adventurous in your menu selection - the flavour combinations are incredible and excite the palate from the first mouthful to the last! Our experience was enhanced by the maitre d’hotel Rob who recommended and described the menu impeccably. We would recommend the cheeseboard as Rob’s presentation was a masterpiece. Thoroughly enjoyable experience - we would highly recommend!
27/08/2018: Having enjoyed Shaun Dickens in various formats over the years - flights of wine, New Orleans when flooded out, and many restaurant meals, I have just experienced the lighter side of Shaun Dickens on ihs patio overlooking Hobbs Boats.

The Baskerville

Shiplake, South Oxfordshire
19/08/2018: After walking from Henley decided to pop in for a drink and ended up having the best Sunday lunch for a long time! The service is so good, from the moment we walked in the door (we didn't have a booking) to when we left, we were so well looked after. The manager and his team are outstanding, nothing is too much trouble and their attention to detail is second to none. My wife had the roast pork and I had the roast beef and it was delicious! Highly recommend The Baskerville and will definitely be returning!!
19/08/2018: We were just passing and popped in just before 3pm on Sunday 19th without a booking. We were welcomed by a friendly landlord who told us he would find us a table and not to worry that they would be not taking anymore orders after 3pm. After a couple of minutes wait we were seated and offered menus and drinks. Sunday roasts were great, plenty of choice, and all the standard trimmings. Gravy was excellent and the product of 2 days of preparation. Service was swift, food piping hot and staff followed up shortly after serving to check everything was ok. Reasonable prices for this part of the region. Will definitely return. Thank you.

Orwells at Shiplake

Shiplake, South Oxfordshire, 60-100£
12/08/2018: We have enjoyed many wonderful meals at Orwell’s but today’s experience has left me feeling sick. I chose courgette flowers, which happen to be a dish I love, however, I was served a greasy and over fried and over salty dish and minus the promised artichokes. My husband’s main course was also too generously salted.
11/08/2018: A special dinner for my sister in laws birthday. The food really was fantastic with lots of amuse bouches and surprises throughout out our evening which made it very special. Only four stars for two reasons, we were one of two tables in a small room, our server regularly came to the entrance of the room and looked around, but never caught our eyes, clocked our empty glasses or asked if we needed anything, meaning that I had to leave the table twice to ask for more drinks. The cocktails at £15 were exorbitant.

The Highwayman

Chiltern Woods, South Oxfordshire
06/08/2018: A perfect, traditional English country pub, although modernised it's very subtle and sympathetic. The staff were fantastic, as was the food, a mixture of roasts, grilled salmon & two childrens meals (they're large!). All eight meals were enjoyed, the only slight murmur was that the lamb was slightly overdone. The garden was great to sit out in for pre/post meal drinks, a lot of wasps though. Recommended.
26/07/2018: Wonderful attentive service and exceptional food, Gewürztraminer by the glass, lovely surprise! Terraced back yard with decking with masses of amazing pink Hydrangeas! Out of the way Inn though 'brown' sign posted - so easy to find!

The Red Lion

Watlington, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
26/08/2018: Somewhat bored with the current offerings in Henley at the moment - we ventured a little out of town and had a very enjoyable evening at the Red Lion.
25/08/2018: Have eaten here a couple of times since Olivier has taken over the Red Lion. Previously really enjoyed the food / wine / setting however on a busy Saturday summer evening we were squeezed into the back room (it was hot, stuffy and noisy) and the food wasn’t quite up to scratch. Starter and main fish dish rather bland and steak over cooked.

The Crown Inn

Aston Rowant, South Oxfordshire, 20-30£
19/08/2018: We stopped off for a light lunch after a great 5m circular walk. The welcome and service were friendly and efficient. The ale was better than most of the pubs we have visited during our walks in the Chilterns and I chose with knowledge as the barman kindly offered a taste of what was on offer. My friends all enjoyed their sandwiches, which were quite expensive but did come with fries and salad. I very much enjoyed my minute steak (with similar accompaniments) but it was minute in more than one sense, about two thrids maybe of what is normally served and so not great value. We would definitely return..
22/07/2018: This pub is set just back from the road and is lovely and old, with low beams and bar at 1 end of the room. The game of Aunt Sally can be played in the back garden.

The Mole Inn

Garsington, South Oxfordshire, 30-45£
19/08/2018: The sort of pub which fits the image of an English summer afternoon where people have time to sit and talk, enjoying a cool drink and a pleasant atmosphere. Idyllic.
12/08/2018: First visit here on guidance from trip advisor & werent let down the food was great ! We had steaks 3 serlions 1 fillet chips & peppercorn sauce it was all really good quality , followered by 2 choc brownies, 2

The Crooked Billet

Chiltern Woods, South Oxfordshire, >100£
19/08/2018: We came to the Crooked Billet for one of their music nights last week, which was our first visit. The menu was very interesting and the food was exceptional. The staff were clearly kept very busy but they were absolutely lovely. Nothing was too much trouble. Coupled with wonderful music, it was a fantastic evening. This is not a local pub for us, but we will definitely be coming back!
16/08/2018: Clearly this place is very popular - we failed to book and were relegated to the (overcast) garden. Serves us right - but this is an out-of-the-way place (so do trust your SatNav when it leads you down increasingly narrow lanes) and you don't want to make such a trip for nothing.

The Half Moon

Watlington, South Oxfordshire
03/09/2018: After hunting around past three o'clock on an August bank holiday weekend for a meal in a pub - any pub - in the Chilterns, we finally came across a place that was actually open.
01/09/2018: We haven't been to The Half Moon for ages.

Cafe Buendia

Henley North, South Oxfordshire
31/08/2018: What a lovely little friendly restaurant. Only popped in as at last minute and so glad I did. Pleasent surroundings, friendly staff and and lovely pizza. I went for the medium American Hot and really enjoyed it, so much better than going to one of the main chains. Would certainly consider going back when in Henley again.
24/08/2018: It was midday and the town square eateries with their plastic menus did not appear attentive or interested...... so a short stroll down Bell Street brought us to Cafe Buendia where, even though they were busy, we received a warm welcome and prompt attention.

The Peacock Country Inn Restaurant

Chinnor, South Oxfordshire
31/07/2018: Mycket bra genuint country hotell. Lite svårt att hitta då vår gps spökade och visade oss runt området.
31/07/2018: Everything suited us, but most especially the quietness. We found the peacock by good luck and chance. We wanted to stay in the countryside within distance of Highn Wycombe. We arrived late, after dinner and where immediately made welcome and found our very comfortable room. They had been busy over the weekend but made the point of giving us a cool room over this very hot season. A lovely evening stroll before bed and a very comfortable night. Breakfast was delicious, we had scrambled egg with smoked salmon but there was a large choice. We were able to leave our car whilst we walked up to The Ridgeway and have every intention of returning. A comfortable place with a very welcoming atmosphere.

Luscombes Restaurant

Chiltern Woods, South Oxfordshire
19/08/2018: Lunch on Thursday was a delight ! Soup of the day with mussels and coriander. I’ve never tasted such an excellent carpaccio de thon. Perfect service led by a charming Sharon.
12/08/2018: Came across the Golden Ball by accident, but it made our trip to Henley-on-Thames very memorable. The fish starters were lovely - calamari and the crab salad. Following a fish theme my main course of lemon sole was soft and delicious. The fresh, handmade pasta dish was also much enjoyed. Sweets were equally tasty and carefully prepared. The chef came out into the restaurant later and was very friendly and welcomed our feedback on the food - which needless to say was excellent!!
