Mangia Bene Italian Restaurant

Barnsbury, Islington, >100£
01/09/2020: Even allowing for the dying embers of Mr Sunak's EOTHO fire, this place was busy within the distancing restrictions which were observed as was the table cleaning. The table configuration changed several times to accommodate guests with minimal delay - we had booked. Ahead of us were tables of 5 and 8 and the kitchen, frankly, seemed to come under some stress. However, there was a visible hierarchy front of house and control was maintained. We had three courses and all the food was very good. Service to our table was pretty engaged considering how busy they were and we would definitely go back without prompting from the Chancellor.
25/08/2020: This restaurant didn’t stand out as anything special as we approached it but what a hidden gem! This is a friendly family run business and we immediately felt welcomed when we arrived. The staff were chatty and there was a nice atmosphere. The food was yummy and reasonably priced. We would def recommend and will certainly return if we are in the area. Thank you so much!

Merkato

05/09/2020: Great traditional Ethiopian food and amazing atmosphere. The staff is very nice and the menu is very flexible and affordable. They toast their coffee here, tastes and smells amazing but the best part about this place is the owner, she’s the sweetest and friendliest person I’ve ever met. I had an amazing experience and will definitely return.
05/09/2020: Food is superb, incredibly tasty and cooked at the perfection. We tried the combo 2 and two starters. Completely satisfied and highly recommended.

The Little Viet Kitchen

Barnsbury, Islington
09/09/2020: First the positives: - Nice, petite non-commercial restaurant- Attentive service (caveat below) What wasn’t great:- The food menu that is online isn’t the menu you get at the restaurant. The starter dumplings were overcooked and appeared to be out of a frozen packet not homemade. The gorgeous fresh prawns that you see on IG are not those in the restaurant. Instead you get very expensive Iceland type breaded prawns. I appreciate that the menu has changed due to covid, but then don’t post photos of food that you’re not serving on IG and update your online menu.- The crab and papaya salad was expensive with very little sight of crab. - The salmon main was dull. Nothing overly exciting about it.- The aubergine main was undercooked - we did say this to the waiter and he replied that is how the Vietnamese cook aubergine. I really don’t think so! Most of the dish was inedible. - Very dark lighting - you can’t see what you’re eating. - Service was fast. Not the relaxed leisurely meal we hoped for. Sadly, this was an overpriced meal at £85 including 3 drinks (food totalling £60). You can get much better elsewhere. I really wanted to support this restaurant with it being independent. I had high hopes, but it didn’t deliver.

Castle

Barnsbury, Islington
18/08/2020: We ordered half a lobster from the specials menu and I have had more meat on a prawn, it was overcooked and very small. To finish off, the dish was the only option on the menu to have no price next to it. Apparently it was a fault with the printing, however... when the bill arrives we soon realised why there was no price on the menu as it cost 30£!!! This is a very average pub, charging 30£ for a meal is a joke.
13/08/2020: I went there with a friend for a girly catch up and booked a table on the roof terrace so we could enjoy the summer sun! The food is great, the drinks menu had a good selection and the staff are friendly and provided great service. Thanks The Castle team, we will definitely be returning!

Indian Veg Bhelpuri

Barnsbury, Islington
15/08/2020: Cheap and cheerful, with many over-the-top posters promoting the benefits of a vegetarian diet. They also do takeaway.
01/06/2020: Hopefully Covid-19 will sort this place out. They never gave me a receipt so all those long years of tax avoidance will now bear its fruit and this scam company will be left with no other option but to close this hole. The quality of the food is horrendous, everything is made of potato, no variety. Not the cleanest place either and I don't find it reasonably priced. The best bit is that you can bring your own booze so you will not feel so depressed by this palce and will eventually have a good time.

The Albion

Barnsbury, Islington, 20-30£
07/09/2020: Four of us booked for early evening meal in August. Food was excellent for all and wine also good. Nice ambience in outside garden area: very quiet. Service was good. Will go back if we can get good enough weather to be outside!
05/09/2020: Was enjoying a day out in London, and needed a place to charge my phone, was incredibly lucky they had a seat by a plug point, served quick and with a smile, the girl serving me (think she was Angelica?) was very friendly and efficient. The beers were excellent, and the Camembert was to die for. The staff were all exceptional, despite being busy they all made the time to say hello and make sure I was ok. Great job guys!

Little Georgia - Barnsbury

Barnsbury, Islington
23/09/2020: Soviet-era decor, not exactly appropriate for Georgia, but since Stalin was from there... However, the food is worth the trip and the restaurant filled up quickly right after opening. Mixed dips starters with cheese bread were amazing. Each dip was very different and all were delicious. Mains (chicken & pork) were without hesitation tweaked according to our requests and excellent. Good local wines. Friendly and swift service. Soul food of high quality. Will be repeated
19/09/2020: I went to Little Georgia with my fiancée and a friend. It was the first time I'd experienced "proper" Georgian food (in the sense it was a sit down meal) and it was absolutely delicious! Top notch service in a relaxed, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I'd absolutely recommend going - and I'll be going back for sure!

The Drapers Arms

Barnsbury, Islington, 60-100£
11/09/2020: Went on a Thursday night - very covid conscious, plenty of social distance, hand sanitzier in abundence, staff with masks etc. Good selection of cask ales, food is outstanding for a pub - me and a mate shared crispy lamb and salt beef starters then had a beautiful steak and ale pie and perfectly cooked onglet steak. Decent prices - not cheap but good quality, decent wine, very nice experience. 100% will go again and recommend
05/09/2020: I’m not sure who has hired the door staff on a pretence of the fact that they are in a war zone, but they approach every customer like a potential threat. We queued for a normal table of 3 on a Saturday night and were told to open our bags (normal and fine - no issue with that) - I happened to have some clothes with me and was asked ‘WHY’VE YOU GOT CLOTHES ON YOU ON A NIGHT OUT’ (it was 9pm - also has nothing to do with you). Further rude and sarcy comments were made by the staff as we continued to queue - but funnily no ID’s were checked, by staff so big on authority. They were also doing body searches without masks on, whilst barking orders in people’s faces.Another randomly rude comment was ‘YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR CRISPS ON YOU WE ARE A RESTAURANT’ - again, shockingly, we are not going to sit there and eat wotsits on a night out, they were just in the bag, no need to act like it is a stick of dynamite ready to blow. I would highly recommend Stonegate looking at new door staff who don’t treat the customers, who are supporting their venues after being closed, like they are being arrested for queuing for a drink.

Delhi Grill

Barnsbury, Islington, <20£
29/09/2020: We came here as this restaurant is offering 50% off food for the whole if September to celebrate their 19th anniversary. We had lamb chops and grilled chicken wings to start. The chops were delicious and slightly charred and the chicken was succulent. We had railway lamb and dhaba chicken with rice and roti for our main course. The railway lamb was the star of the meal. It tasted like an authentic homemade curry and the meat was tender. The chicken curry was tasty but I would have preferred thigh meat to breast, but this us just a personal preference. We had a lovely bottle of Carmenere but they also serve a good choice of beer and soft drinks. The service was very attentive and welcoming. You will need to download the NHS Covid 19 app as you have to scan it upon entering. The tables were well spaced and we felt that covid safety precautions were being followed. They are offering 30% off food only for the whole of Oct, so I suggest you book a table if you love Indian food.
13/09/2020: On so many levels this restaurant gets it right:Service Food Quality Atmosphere Price Authenticity This HAS to be the way forward for the restaurant / hospitality venue of today. Even if the food hadn't been great, you could not fault the service. Kind, generous, funny, helpful, efficient. How many places do you know that will run after you on a packed, busy Friday evening when they're rushed off their feet (I say rushed off their feet but, believe me, everything works like clockwork) just to hand you back something that you'd left behind. Restaurateurs of today, take note: these things matter! But the food: I've not been to India yet (bucket list) but this has got to be as authentic as it gets. Rich, deep, complex sauces with just the right amount of hint of spice. Delicate rice that complements the depth of the sauces to go with it. I haven't tasted Tarka Dahl like that in a VERY long time. Bravo chef! And then the prices - well September is 50% off (would be rude not to) - but that aside, so well-priced for the quality of ingredients and time and passion invested in construction of these dishes. Thank you to everyone last night who made this evening such a special one with your passion for delivering good, strong, affordable, perfectly delicious, quality food with exceptional service!

The Angel

Barnsbury, Islington
04/08/2020: I have eaten in weatherspoons the country over and never have i received such an inedible dish as i did in the angel, burned burger pattys a cm thick and cold chips.. i was looking forward to my first trip to the spoons after lockdown, now ill just pay more elsewhere as to not be insulted by being served an inedible dish. Angel is an expensive area but the angel spoons clearly cant employ an adequate cook for the dishes being served and clearly they think their customers are below being served a half decent meal.. ill eat a mouldy banana skin before i go back there. It wouldn't supprise me if they had a blind amputee chimp cooking their food.. and i was there during a very quiet time of the day, no excuses.. my girlfriend also retured her skinny chicken burger as she said it tasted like luke warm rubber.
02/08/2020: Great value for hot drinks in here. Why pay £3 for a cup of coffee in the global branded coffee chains when you can have free refills here for £1.29Some interesting photos on the walls depicting the history of the area and how it got its name
