The best restaurants serving Default food in Rettendon and Runwell Chelmsford East of England

Not the place to go to on a Sunday evening. When we arrived -slightly put off by dog allowed to sit in a customer chair in the bar area? Several popular items on the menu had run out; others had parts unavailable. The 'special' ordered by one of my family...entitled 'chicken with salsa' came with no salsa, so was very dry. Yorkshires were dry and cracked like meringue nests - inedible. Was told it was because they are kept warm for a long time in the oven! It was explained that they aimed to run out of many items by Sunday lunchtime to avoid waste. Offered free desserts - disappointing - see photo of sad ice-cream in very chipped pot. Waitress forgot to bring spoons which manager eventually rectified, by which time ice-cream mostly melted. Manager explained staff were very tired as it had been a busy lunchtime? We have visited The Hawk many times over many years and found things fine. Staff are very friendly so no complaints there; poor management though. Most of the week is very good...but avoid Sunday, after lunchtime!

Had a great Bell burger and beer was lovely. Due to change hands soon. Will see what happens, but for good pub grub and cool real ales you can't go wrong.

The food was terrible. I had the ravioli and it was over done and tasteless. I only had a little of it. The sauce was nice but you never got much of it. The mushrooms were rubbery. Two of my companions had fish and they had to send it back since they were overdone. Other people had the burgers which seemed ok but the onion rings were solid.

I have visited with my Lunch Club on several occasions , quite a large group ( !4 or so ) on several occasions , and the service is excellent , the prices are very reasonable and food is great , A good choice is available , and staff are excellent coping with a group in a small area , with good service andd a smile . Would reccommend

Arrived about 1:30pm to a long queue which moved very slowly indeed, ordered 2 simple meals which took a long time to appear and both meals were lukewarm, won't be going there again.

Not been for a few years, nothing had changed, perfect sunshine midweek, food was great, not cheap but nowhere is cheap anymore, nice sandwich, chicken wings where nice and the fries/onion rings spot on, £35 for a light lunch, pricey, but if it’s all lovely and fresh made then it’s ok for the price, ( but the mayonnaise is terrible, must be the cheapest one in the cash and carry) good service. 5/5
