My husband and I arrived early at Buckhurst for breakfast. When we received our breakfasts at nearly £10 each it was obvious that they had been prepared in advance as the mushrooms were luke warm, the vegetarian sausages were over cooked, hard and dry and the toast was cold. It just didn't seem freshly cooked as perhaps prepared too early and not heated through. Staff however were wonderful, so was the coffee and the garden centre but we won't be back for breakfast.

They didn’t have what I wanted so thought I’d get a coffee before I left. Didn’t get any food as it was all ridiculously expensive. The coffee I ordered was a regular size but my goodness it was tiny, other places class it as small. Lots of tables not cleared, and in my opinion isn’t like a cafe as it’s more like a canteen. Staff seemed ok, not overly friendly though.

The cage here has never been amazing but at least it was friendly and felt comfortable. We have visited BHN twice recently to stock the garden and used the cafe both times. Since the rebuild following the fire it is too big, it feels and looks like a works canteen. On both visits we remarked how small the coffee is for the price, the large is the same size as a regular in other places. The bread we had was dry and the coronation chicken was bland. Yesterday we shared a Bakewell tart and it was as hard as a rock and completely flavourless. The staff don’t even look at you when they take your order and it isn’t a friendly experience. Overall the cafe feels echoey and far too big to be comfortable and the food and attitude need addressing.

The garden centre is lovely but the cafe food is dire. I asked for a sausage roll as there was one on display, That was the sausage roll I got complete with dried up salad, I did think they might have refreshed the salad! I also had a slice of Bakewell, which had way too much almond flavouring and the pastry was solid enough to break teeth! The coffee was quite bitter. The staff were I saw were friendly enough but the food seriously lets it down

This garden centre is good to sell you items but do not want to know when you have problems. I purchased it in April and obviously never used it until the summer when it broke. It was obviously not suitable for its use. It was not a cheap umbrella either.

had a couple of good experiences here till today. I love sweet and sour and was very happy when I noticed it on the menu. This is my no1 first choice where ever its offered, from Chinese takaway to uncle bens at home. What i got was more like a goolash, loaded with chilli. I bought this up with the staff who thought it was quite normal to get chilli in sweet and sour, I beg to differ. will think again about returning.

We used to frequently eat here for lunch before the renovations. Sadly, since reopening, the prices have gone up and the quality seems to have gone down. We arrived for lunch with our kids, and it was so cold in there. I asked a staff member if there was heating, to be told that there wasn’t any (the air con units apparently don’t do heat). If that’s the case, they’re going to be in trouble when the temperature really starts to drop. The breakfast was ok, but not very hot, and the price for a tea cake and jam was ridiculous - £3.60, plus an extra £1.40 for a tiny pot of jam. So £5 altogether, which is shocking when you can get the same thing for a couple of quid in most other local garden centres/cafes. The kids meal options are again very pricey for what you get compared to other local places (Hyde hall etc), with the quantities being very small (half a sandwich). We really wanted to support this place after they reopened, but sadly I don’t think we’ll be returning. It’s an expensive meal out for a garden centre.

We stopped here for tea and cake on Saturday. The queue was long - i queued for more than 10 minutes and shortly after, it had more than doubled in size. Service was extremely slow with only one person taking the orders but lots of other staff milling around not seeming to do much. She clearly was harried and stressed and it showed in her manner to customers. The food - when unceremoniously dumped on our table - was inedible. The scones looked anaemic and the lemon drizzle cake looked a soggy mess (and I was told, from past experience, was indeed soggy) so I tried the bread pudding. It was absolutely awful - stodgy, wet and tasted dreadful. One of us had a toasted tea cake which was thin and unappealing. Since being rebuilt this is a huge space and, judging by the queues, could be really successful but I would really advise avoiding this coffee shop.

The coffee shop has not been open long since the fire so we thought we would go and have breakfast as we used to I’m afraid it wasn’t a patch on the old breakfast, my wife asked for poached eggs on toast sorry we can’t do that you have to have smashed avocado as well ? I had the English breakfast which consisted of two sausages two fried eggs small portion of beans, two rashers of undercooked, bacon and mushrooms that look like they hadn’t seen a frying pan or any butter. Just warmed up under a grill and were very unappetising and a hash brown, which is not English, but American no tomatoes, no black pudding no sauces on the table or offered you have to go back and ask at the counter and they are hidden underneath very disappointing and a total cost of £23.20 Great Garden Centre, but the café needs sorting out

There were a lot of different plants here and we did buy some and a couple of gifts. Overall the garden centre is really nice, it was the coffee shop that rated 3*. Asked for a basic cheese baguette, told sorry we have new staff and they can only do what’s on the menu. Really!! Grated cheese and a baguette. One of us a wrap which was liked. Two of us had cross cut chips which were nice but not what we had wanted. The waitress first bought out the drinks, put the tray on the table and walked off then same with food. Not a word uttered at all. Yes she was young but that’s no excuse for what she did. Drinks not bad

We have been returning customers for a number of years but when we recently visited the coffee shop for lunch, it was a huge disappointment. The toasted sandwich is normally thick cut bread with a side of coleslaw, presented well with a salad. The sandwich was thin cheap bread, which looked like it had been thrown on the plate, there was not any coleslaw and the salad looked like it had been left out of the fridge for a few hours. On a positive note the latte we had was good and the sandwich fillings were ample and tasty and the service was good. However the price we paid for a mediocre lunch, which was badly presented, was too much and we would definitely think twice about returning..... such a shame!!

Overall poor food and service at the wrong price point. Was charged £50 for 3 kids lunches and 2 adults. Food was average at best which I wouldn’t mind but when you’re paying £8 for a baguette you’d expect something a bit more. Cofffee is awful, was so weak on my black coffee I could see the bottton of the mug. Asked if the coffee was always this week and was told a lot of people say that. Fair enough they added an extra shot but maybe need to look into further if it’s common feedback. Won’t be returning

Went today with my wife for a quick lunch. Bearing in mind it was already 13.15pm and the place wasn't busy, we ordered 1 bacon and brie ciabatta and 1 fish fingers ciabatta and 1 portion of potato wedges. We waited for 45 minutes for our food to arrive; poorly presented, my wife's bacon and brie ciabatta looked as if it had been run over by a bus (I know that in order to toast it they place it in a press but this was well and truly flat!). My fish fingers ciabatta consisted of 2 COLD and OVERCOOKED fish fingers in a barely cooked ciabatta with shredded iceberg lettuce and a bit of tartare sauce (bought in). The potato wedges were cooked and they were greasy. In all with 1 tea and 1 coffee they managed to charge me over £29!! Where on Earth do they price their food? If the food had it been enjoyable I would have gladly paid for it but this "quick lunch" left a very bitter taste in my mouth . Shame on you, you do not deserve the business! NEVER AGAIN

Visited the BHN cafe this morning for breakfast with our grandchildren. When we went to order we were told that we were too late as they stopped serving breakfast at 11.30. At this point it was 11.33. There were 3 people in front of us placing orders which took up at least 5 minutes, hence we missed the 11.30 deadline. The lady on the till checked with the chef but they were adamant we couldn’t have the breakfast. We understand there has to be a cut off point but also some flexibility is needed and perhaps a different attitude to customer service !!

We were kept waiting for 45min and only then received our order after another customer spoke to staff for us. we would not have stayed if an honest answer was given. People around us were receiving their orders much quicker. My mum was very stressed and I was very concerned for her. The food was good although I feel overpriced for the amount of food received. The staff work very hard and do their best to provide a professional and friendly service. Jane always greets customers with a warm smile and will do anything to ensure the customer enjoys their experience. The staff have to deal with the occasional rude customer which is very undeserved. Visited here today for lunch with my mum. We use the garden centre and thought today we would treat ourselves to a spot of lunch in the new restaurant area. The blackboards had lots of choice and we instantly went to our favourite sandwich filling, coronation chicken. I went to find a seat while my mum placed our order. Our sandwich arrived and instead of coronation chicken it was chicken mayo which we said wasn’t ours. She took it away and then the lady who had served my mum came over and instantly started blaming my mum for the confusion. She said a few times that my mum had ordered 2 chicken mayo sandwiches which my mum had not. The receipt also showed that this was not the case. The lady also made it clear that this was not actually something they offer and implied they had done us a favour by making this especially for us (even though it was not what we had ordered). The lady then walked back towards the kitchen half way through a conversation. I felt she had been very rude to my mum for no reason, she had made the mistake but was trying to blame my mum. The correct sandwich came and it was very tasty but unfortunately the experience was ruined by rudeness and the feeling that everyone was talking about us behind the counter.

Having had hip surgery in January and being marooned indoors, decided with my husband and friends to visit this Garden Centre. Not that far from us so not a long car trip. We were able to get a disabled space without any problems, as we entered the building, staff were polite and wished us a good morning and asked if we needed any help. We made our way to the cafe and had coffee and homemade sausage roll which incidentally was one of the best I’ve ever had. We looked st the outside plants which all looked healthy and everywhere was very clean and tidy. Inside there was a vast variety of candles, homewares, cards etc all at reasonable prices, the displays were beautifully laid out and again the staff were all very polite. After a while we went back to the cafe for a spot of lunch. The cafe was clean and very pleasant , the menu was very varied and very reasonable. Our meals were served quickly, very hot, and the portions were quite big. All the staff there were very pleasant too, and I noticed the minute a table was vacated, it was cleared and cleaned. I was so impressed about this garden centre I have recommended it to several people already. The main restaurant area is a little bland and more akin to a works canteen - its functional - just lacks ambiance. Music too loud for my liking. A birthday treat afternoon tea. Well worth waiting for. Everything so freshly prepared and lovely staff. There was plenty of choices on the plate so much so that we could not eat it all. Lucky husbands also got a treat. The garden centre and gift shop also well worth a visit.

We have been dropping into BHN for years now. Recently it was taken over and re-modeled; Buck Hatch Nursery is the new brand name. Move over Tiptree, this has now become our favorite garden centre and tea room.

We visit this garden centre very frequently as they grow & produce top quality plants & shrubs, they also have a good selection of garden tools & other equipment & have a vast display of garden ornaments & other gifts for you to view. Plus once you have finished your shopping etc. you can go to their new restaurant & enjoy a nice cup of tea or coffee & a cake or something more substantial if you wish & all can be purchased for a very reasonable price.

I needed a venue where as a group of 25 people we could all have breakfast at the same time sitting together and at our chosen time. We then needed to be able to return for lunch, again at our time and seated together. I was told by the manager Claire that they could cover all our requirements and my goodness didn't they. 25 Full English Breakfast's served hot and at the same time and within minutes of them just opening. We returned at Lunchtime to find our seats reserved together and then 25 Lunches served exactly as we had ordered by a happy and very efficient team of staff. All this while they were serving, I would estimate as another 80 people having meals.

BHN garden centre has “recently” been upgraded. Part of the (very long) process has been to make the restaurant much bigger – in its current state it's a disaster!

I tried the coffee shop at BHN again yesterday. Could not believe that the lady directing staff behind the counter was telling another member of staff about the recent poor reviews about long waits for food. Had she been more professional and had her conversation in private snd when there was not a queue of waiting customers, the reviews might be better

Estamos tomando nuestro negocio a otro lado. Qué pena porque venden tales plantas.

We were staying in the hotel and this was the night of the Queen's funeral so we decided to 'eat in'. They only had one chef in the kitchen so it took a long time for our meals to appear. They did warn us when we sat down but it would have been nice to be told when we booked the table when we checked in. Food was nothing special but nothing to complain about either.

In area looking at antiques, decided to stop here for light lunch. Dissapointed to find that a Tea Room served our hot drinks in takeout cups and sandwiches on paper plates with plastic knives & forks. The menu sandwich choice read Thick hand cut Wiltshire ham, the sandwich turned up with one slice of thin cut ham. Sausage roll was cooked in microwave so pastry was soggy and a toasted tuna sandwich was not edible. Awful lunch! Addressed our complaint to the staff, was refunded back the Tuna sandwich. Doubtful we will rush back.

Chelmsford the place to eat. Arrived today to see 4 partners chatting behind the counter . I asked one of them I could have x2 pieces of cake from underneath the glass cover, only to be told “it’s self service”. I appreciate that but I am 78 years of age with a health condition and am unable to lift heavy items. I was eventually assisted. There was no breakfast tea on the counter so I was sent to another counter where there was also none to be had. Reluctantly a member of staff found one for me. Not really the best customer experience, unlike the partner in the Christmas department who went over and above to help escorting me to another department to assist me. Come on John Lewis you need to do better.
