We love calling in, (on our way North, or South, from Whitby) for a meal as the staff are always very pleasant and the food good. However I was disappointed at our last visit to find that the Burger was not homemade - I guess I should have asked.

The Priory restaurant at Burythorpe house offered us a marvellous lunch in every respect. The food was excellently cooked and presented. My starter of treacle-cured salmon with ginger dressing was refreshing and arranged beautifully on the plate with a type of rice cracker creation. Both our main courses were simple but cooked to perfection with fine attention to detail. I hope the chefs read this review. For dessert my partner had a sticky toffee pudding and said it was amazing, the best he had ever tested and I had a hard job keeping my hands off it, except mine was just as good - a ginger cake with rhubarb and white chocolate. It's hard to explain the depth of flavour, but in the case of the ginger cake, it came from contrasting textures and colours. For example, the fresh stewed rhubarb was accompanied by pureed rhubarb dressing the balls of white chocolate and little pieces of dried rhubarb creating a chewie, nuttier background flavour. These guys really know what they are doing. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and offered perfect service. The interior is elegant and unpretentious country house style. From the dining room we looked out onto fields with a church just visible in the distance. We will definitely go again. This place is only about 10 minutes drive from Malton and offers a far superior dining experience to more local pubs and restaurants.

We had booked based on its reputation then read recent reviews and wondered what to expect. We needn't have worried. Fortunately we had booked, as the pub was packed when we arrived. The food was all great, a really nice selection of starters, mains and puddings from a fairly small menu, which I always see as a good sign. We loved our lunch and will return.

Lovely staff, delicious for brunch or a carrot cake muffin and you can enjoy the courtyard cafe, gift & farm shop without needing to pay an entry fee; Castle Howard is still one of our favourite travel stops (and well worth the entry fee if you have time to browse and enjoy the vista from the gardens too). Great coffee but can be very busy around 1pm (as expected).
