On holiday in the area. Didn’t book, but being a Monday wasn’t very busy, some establishments are closed at the beginning of week. My wife and I and two dogs were made very welcome in the bar area. A good pub menu, we chose starters, my wife opting for the spring rolls and myself roasted cheese on garlic bread with bbq sauce and salad on the side, starters didn’t disappoint. Mains, my wife choosing the steak pie, myself the gammon steak, each served with the usual accompaniments. Neither disappointed, I got a wee taster of the steak pie and so succulent. No room for dessert. Would definitely recommend. Vert good price.

The Priory restaurant at Burythorpe house offered us a marvellous lunch in every respect. The food was excellently cooked and presented. My starter of treacle-cured salmon with ginger dressing was refreshing and arranged beautifully on the plate with a type of rice cracker creation. Both our main courses were simple but cooked to perfection with fine attention to detail. I hope the chefs read this review. For dessert my partner had a sticky toffee pudding and said it was amazing, the best he had ever tested and I had a hard job keeping my hands off it, except mine was just as good - a ginger cake with rhubarb and white chocolate. It's hard to explain the depth of flavour, but in the case of the ginger cake, it came from contrasting textures and colours. For example, the fresh stewed rhubarb was accompanied by pureed rhubarb dressing the balls of white chocolate and little pieces of dried rhubarb creating a chewie, nuttier background flavour. These guys really know what they are doing. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and offered perfect service. The interior is elegant and unpretentious country house style. From the dining room we looked out onto fields with a church just visible in the distance. We will definitely go again. This place is only about 10 minutes drive from Malton and offers a far superior dining experience to more local pubs and restaurants.

Staff very pleasant and lovely meal. Only offering a limited 'early in the year' menu but we both found something we liked. Lovely starter of Korean chicken skewers and very nice sea bass main. Portion size was good. No room for puds. Fixed price 2/3 course menu was v good value for money I felt. Haven't been for a while but always had a very positive experience and very nice food, even the time when we walked in and I had managed to book a Crown and Cushion in another part of the country! They were very helpful and found room for us and didn't make a fuss about it at all.

We had a very nice lunch with a friendly service from start to finish and good food. As another reviewer had commented, too many dogs, one in particular was very vociferous throughout our lunch. The owners were oblivious. We are dog lovers and have owned them in the past but we feel that everywhere you go to eat these days dogs are almost always allowed. The Courtyard Cafe has an outside seating area which ok isn’t great when it rains but please Castle Howard consider providing a dog free zone. Thank you.
