The Priory restaurant at Burythorpe house offered us a marvellous lunch in every respect. The food was excellently cooked and presented. My starter of treacle-cured salmon with ginger dressing was refreshing and arranged beautifully on the plate with a type of rice cracker creation. Both our main courses were simple but cooked to perfection with fine attention to detail. I hope the chefs read this review. For dessert my partner had a sticky toffee pudding and said it was amazing, the best he had ever tested and I had a hard job keeping my hands off it, except mine was just as good - a ginger cake with rhubarb and white chocolate. It's hard to explain the depth of flavour, but in the case of the ginger cake, it came from contrasting textures and colours. For example, the fresh stewed rhubarb was accompanied by pureed rhubarb dressing the balls of white chocolate and little pieces of dried rhubarb creating a chewie, nuttier background flavour. These guys really know what they are doing. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and offered perfect service. The interior is elegant and unpretentious country house style. From the dining room we looked out onto fields with a church just visible in the distance. We will definitely go again. This place is only about 10 minutes drive from Malton and offers a far superior dining experience to more local pubs and restaurants.

Visited here last night for the 2nd time. Hidden away but worth finding. Beautiful building that has been through extensive renovations recently. On arrival we were invited into the lounge. Very comfortable with roaring fire. There is a seasonal menu but I think on Fridays and Saturdays they also have a steak menu. I tried deep fried goats cheese and we both had rib-eye steak for a main. The dining room is very nice, wood panelled and very comfortable. The goat's cheese was wonderful with crispy breadcrumbs, Steaks were cooked perfectly, medium rare and very tender. They came with triple cooked chips, proper onion rings, mushrooms and vine tomatoes. Our meals arrived on a board but this was changed for a plate on request. My wife had an Eton mess which was also very nice. We went back to the lounge to have a relaxing coffee and a chat with fellow diners. Service was really good as was location etc. Really enjoyed our evening. Pity we had to drive home in snow. Should have stopped the night. Will definitely be back again soon. I am sure the steak menu will go down well.

Visiting on a quiet Monday evening to celebrate a friends birthday...we arrived to be shown into the sitting room witha blazing log fire. The menu was very tempting & varied with lots of delicious dishes to choose from. The food was delicious & beautifully presented ......quality outweighed quantity which is just as we like it. We thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful well balanced 3 course dinner at a really excellent good value price. We cannot wait for an excuse to visit again!

We booked here for lunch for the two of us after our wedding on the recommendation of the local registrars office. Kind of wish we'd researched as it really is average in every way. Bog standard menu with all the usual predictable things, average prices (about £60 for two with two glasses of wine), food acceptable. Wouldn't go back. Yorkshire has two of the world's best restaurants and dozens of other fine dining establishments. If you want something special make the effort go to one of those. Wish we had.

I was fortunate enough that my wife and daughters chose this hotel as a venue for my surprise 70th Birthday and could not have chosen anywhere better. I was taken by helicopter into the paddock where our guests were awaiting my arrival with welcoming drinks and carols. The house looked a picture with it's open fires, Christmas tree and very tasteful decor. The charm of the dining room was not lost on our 35 guests where we were served with an amazing lunch, which I was told had been individually pre-ordered; a feat by itself. Nothing was too much trouble for the extremely atentive staff who are clearly proud to work at Burythorpe House. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time and I have to say the venue set the tone for the day.

Stayed here on a dinner bed and breakfast package. Good choice for breakfast that will cater for most peoples needs and a good there course evening meal where the menu changed daily. Quality and presentation at a premium at this restaurant as was the first class service from a well presented young workforce. The owners should be proud of what has been achieved here and the service delivered by the team on site. Thanks for the great service and the quality of the experience on each visit we have had to this lovely hotel.

The evening meal and breakfast was faultless. I do enjoy beans with my cooked breakfast which isn't an option. The. Service can a appear a little slow but the price in relation to the quality I feel any complaint is unfair. If it was local for us I would eat their often.

The menu is not extensive but, what it lacks in choice is more than made up by the quality. There were four of us in the party,so a range of starters - mine was scallops with local black pudding. For mains we all had loin of venison. Beautifully cooked. The chef here knows what they are doing. We washed this down with a stunning Rioja before moving on to desserts....go for the chocolate!!

Just been here today on the recommendation of a friend and it didn't disappoint. Friendly girls and young man at front of house, prompt service once they knew we were there. I started off with the goats cheese salad, my husband the ham hock terrine, both were delicious. the roast beef tasty and flavoursome. I finished off with the Chocolate Fondant and my husband the Eton Mess. My only two suggestions would be, 1) Don't serve flat yorkshires, I would have rather have waited another 15 mins for fresh, risen ones2) When you arrive in the front door, as there is no-one to greet, it took some working out to see the message that we need to ring for attention, which I admit was very prompt once we rang the bell, but at first we were just wandering, looking for someone... a little unwelcoming. However, we will definitely return.PS The afternoon tea looked delicious and most substantial.Thank you.

We were staying at the self-catering cottages next door (cheeky) and came here for a celebratory anniversary dinner. With a December date it's difficult to get away from office parties and the Xmas buiild-up buzz but this was perfect for a quiet romantic evening. All the staff were lovely, the table had been trimmed up with 'Happy Anniversary' motifs which also appeared piped round the desserts. Lovely meal in a lovely setting.

I recently visited Burythorpe House for dinner and was bowled over by the decor, position, staff and food. Usually there is a small quibble but no, everything was perfect. I asked to see some of the bedrooms and although several were taken I was shown around three of them. All individually designed with Lady of the Manor Country feel but as luxurious as any well reputed 5 star. The reception rooms were tastefully furnished with a beautiful open fire in the main room and serene atmosphere included. My meal was fabulous with excellent service. All sounds very positive but a true reflection of a special evening. I will return and slumber next time.

We were so impressed with the restaurant that we dined there for four nights when we stayed at the hotel. Excellent food and menu varied daily. Never felt that we were missing out by not visiting other local restaurants although the fact that we did not have to get into the car was an obvious advantage. Excellent friendly service. and wines are reasonably priced for a restaurant of this calibre.

We walked in and then spent some time looking for a staff member. A charming foreign woman appeared after a few minutes and took our drinks order although with some problem translating J & B whisky. Food ordered and promptly served - I chose gnocchi to start followed by venison both excellent although not exciting. A pleasant evening but not worth a special journey.

My wife and I had stayed for three nights and felt obliged to have one dinner in the restaurant. We previously had a look at the dining room and it looked wonderful. The fact that the chef arrives at five thirty to cook the evening meal is a bit strange, but it all falls into place when you dine here. We were the only ones having dinner that night. Not another living soul besides the chef, our waitress and us two. Maybe the word is out?As with the rest of the staff, our waitress was pleasant and smiling, but this did not equate to the expected special meal. First up were our 'complementary' amuse-bouches. We both were not amused. An amuse bouche is supposed to get you revved up for what is to come. Come to think of it, and in retrospect these were preparing us for what was to come. Anyhow, they got two votes for 'insipid' watered down, un-seasoned squash soup.My entrée of smoked Bambi and salad was fair. The smoked venison was a revelation but didn't need any input from a chef, just a deli slicer. My wife's, fig olive & fetta salad, likewise. For main, I had Coley wrapped in prosciutto with new potatoes, samphire and salad. The salad was a repeat of the first course. The samphire was good and the Coley (read cheap cod) was not. I suppose that there isn't much fresh in Burythorpe unless the chef brings it in, so maybe it was cooked from frozen in a sous vide machine; in its delivery pouch; who can say? A little butter or olive oil and a fry pan wouldn't have been a bad idea.My wife's medley of fish was awarded a score of good.A Crème brûlée can be a splendid treat but sadly mine wasn't. It was delivered 'over cold refigerator' cold, with the burnt sugar topping taken to unplumbed depths of burn-ed-ness. This obviously had been noticed by the purpetrator because it had been chipped at to make sure it was alright; it wasn't and the custard was lumpy. Thankfully my wife's ice cream didn't go wrong. When we got up to leave, there was no-one else around. I called out, but 'no answer' was the stern reply. I couldn't believe that the chef and our waitress had both cleared off and left us to our own devices...... Just the same sort of service as from the rest of the hotel.

I eat out a lot, (lucky me), in all types of restaurants right up to Heston level. I avoid hotel restaurants as a rule because, outside of Michelin stardom, they are frequently sad and hopeless places. The Priory is different. My wife and I enjoyed two dinners there which were of very good quality and, for what they were, very fairly priced.

I have to give credit where it’s due. I went with my wife for a meal as a non-resident to the Burythorpe Hotel on a Saturday night and I have to say it was a pleasant and enjoyable experience. We were welcomed on entering by very friendly and polite staff who directed us to the very well-appointed lounge where we had pre dinner drinks. The staff were attentive and friendly, but not intrusive or over familiar. Our order was taken and we were seated without being rushed. The food was in keeping with the price which represented good value for money and the restaurant was intimate and comfortable. Some reviews have criticised the maintenance and upkeep of the Burythorpe and there are some initial indications that these are an issue, such as the front door could do with a lick of paint. My overall impression of the Burythorpe is that an injection of capital would address these maintenance problems but, for a value for money meal at this level, is as good as it gets so please give it the support it deserves.

It would look like I’m beating a drum for this pub! But we keep going back because to be honest it is just such good value. Tried their two steaks for £20, choice of rump, sirloin or ribeye, we both went for sirloin, superb, cooked as we wanted, medium rare, salad, mushrooms, peas, onion rings, and a separate bowl of chips. You must try it! I also think you will find it harder to get a better pint of bitter, landlady told me lines are cleaned at the change of every barrel as well as normal cleaning.

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!

Absolutely loved this pub/restaurant. We sat outside with our dog at one of numerous tables and had a delicious Sunday lunch. So much flavour in the meat and the roast potatoes were the best. A bit pricey but worth it for the setting, the food, the service and the landlord brought out some steak pieces for the dogs to share. Amazing.
