You would expect high quality products when paying a fairly high price however the Fish and Chips along with Mushy peas are poor quality indeed with the mushy peas filled with onions (not described on the menu) whilst the Fish has pancake type mushy batter along with dry tasteless chips.

Food was nice enough but the staff were very rude and sarcastic at times, making you feel like an inconvenience for being there. I have a lot of allergies and I was pleased to see they do a lot of gluten free options as I am coeliac. Eating out with allergies can be very stressful and this was not made better by the fact one of the servers was very rude when I asked about allergens. I understand that the restaurant was busy but people with allergies aren’t being difficult for the fun of it, we have to ask extra questions for our health. Trust me, I wish I didn’t have to think about it! He told me he was ‘too busy’ to help and I just ended up not bothering ordering in the end. I left feeling quite upset. The food was good for gluten free but none of the staff seemed to have any knowledge of the allergen menu and were all round quite unwelcoming.

Visited for my husband’s birthday, accompanied by our dog. We had a drink in the bar as the table was apparently not available until 7 in the Russell room, which is where people with dogs are banished to; a room not unlike a 1980’s conference suite. The staff in the bar area were lovely and service was great. Went downhill after that. The Grill looked welcoming and vibrant, the Russell Room is not. Not sure why we had to wait until 7 as it was empty apart from one other couple. Would have been happier eating in the bar area and not feel like we were being punished for bringing our dog, which I appreciate not everyone is a fan of. Husband’s food was excellent apparently; lamb shanks. My was awful; gnocchi. Approximately 10 dry, obviously burnt and completely devoid of any flavour balls of nothingness in a bland, tasteless sauce. Not sure how it got sent out. Had it removed from the bill at the end and was not asked how the food was at any point after it had been delivered. Overall, an extremely expensive and overrated place to eat and drink.

Having been a regular visitor over the years I feel compelled to share the bad experiences of the last two visits. Our latest visit was for my Birthday lunch with one of my daughters. In short service was awful (as it was on our previous visit) drinks were very over priced. But then my daughter received a parking fine after ringing up to request a lunch reservation and could we use the car park. £100! So cross as no-one told us to speak to reception upon arrival. We rang half hour before. Then had to spend over an hour sorting without even an apology. Despite sending proof of our meal. It has been revoked but this is poor. Seems to us that standards have slipped a lot. Its always been a favourite for meeting up but will now be looking elsewhere.
