Hard chips, fish swimming in oil. Probably the worst fish and chips I've had. Like the rest of Broadway, pretentious and overpriced.

Had takeaway fish and chips & curry for 2 people last night. We are on holiday in Chipping Campden, these were the very worst fish and chips we have ever eaten, chips were tasteless and hard, fish was also tasteless, we threw them away after eating about a third at the most. Can’t say anything other than I suggest Russell’s gets lessons from James Martin who has a restaurant in the village on how to cook proper fish and chips. Even the lemon didn’t help with the fish flavour, they were honestly awful! Had to mark one star, couldn’t leave no stars!

Stumbled upon this when visiting Broadway and it was fantastic. Got the seafood basket which was a mix of fish, calamari and whitebait. Really hard to find a mix of fresh fish like this in England unless you're on the coast, but it all tasted delicious. Also had haddock and chips and it was hot and fresh and tasted lovely. Will definitely be visiting again

Called for fish & chip takeaway and whilst waiting was horrified to witness an incident in the restaurant whereby a waitress was clearing away debris from under the floor of a table with a dustpan but no brush and using her hands and subsequently continued on to lay the table without washing her hands!! I would definitely not dine there after that - at least with the takeaway you can see who’s doing what while you’re waiting!!

Have been going to Russells for over a decade and still drive from Worcester to treat ourselves. Yesterday we arrived around 8pm & would have accepted take away but were given a table. The orders were haddock and chips & scampi & chips. I really like the mint crushed peas, the slice of lemon raises the flavour too. Have seen the mixed reviews and surprised by some of the low reviews. My wife and I had a great meal and it was fresh and hot - lovely.

We dropped on Russels chip shop in Broadway, years ago when we stayed at the caravan club site. First there's no smell of a chip shop from out side. Just a ball board signe. It is a part of the Russell hotel. We went on Friday 4/4. Just as it opened. Ordered two cod and chips tea and the reason for going, the curry sauce. The meal comes with tate sauce, decent portion lemon and crushed slightly minted peas. Tea landed first ,nice. Followed in a few minutes by the meals Lovely fresh cooked fish on top of well cooked chips. Cooked in beef fat. No oil off the fish onto the chips everything was spot on. The curry sauce is a chef special full of veg and is a meal in its self. Iam not putting prices or photos look or better still go. Puts other eateries to shame. As far from the sea as you can get and producing Whitby standard plus fish and chips. Staff are always attentive and friendly. Will be back next time in area. Don't change, please. .

Visited here based on the reviews. I guess it’s personal preference but when I have fish and chips I want proper homemade mushy peas, not frozen peas, crushed with mint. Chips were okay, some were really hard others not so, the fish was good, saving grace was the homemade tartare sauce. Overall not worth it for the money, but the. It is the Cotswolds. Fish and chips, and a portion of chips £22.50

I was a little disappointed in this place, the service was great and restaurant was clean and airy with seating inside and out and in a lovely location, however the fish was very thin and bland, the Chip had a lot of black bits on them and the peas had so much mint in them it was like eating a jar of mint sauce, the curry sauce was lovely though!

We purchased a takeaway and were very disappointed with the meal. We are a local family who have visited Russell's frequently. We stopped having the fish and chips because the quality has declined over recent years. This week, we thought we would try them again. What a disappointment. The minted peas (usually delicious) were so salty they were inedible, the lovely homemade tartare sauce was replaced by a single sachet of mass produced Heinz tartare sauce (which was still charged for, and I have better tartare sauce at home). The chips were dry and the fish fillets greasy. The takeaway charges premium prices but serves up poor quality badly cooked food. Dry chips have been a feature for a few years, I was hoping that may have changed. i was wrong.

Our first visit and we ate inside and although quite busy at lunchtime the food was served quickly. The beer battered fish was nicely cooked with a generous lemon wedge and tartar sauce and the minted peas with onion delicious; the chips were oven crispy, not an excessive portion but the right amount for us; we don't like greasy or soggy food so we enjoyed it. Would have liked to sit outside but then it was mid March.

I told the lady that we had asked to eat in but were told no. She said that we would still have to leave because there were other people that had paid the extra price to eat in. Visited Saturday 1st June, just after 2pm. Lunch service finished at 2.30pm. Very poor experience. Staff were audibly sighing as customers came in, and had a terrible attitude in general. Takeaway diners not allowed to use the benches outside - despite being empty - made no sense. Chips were poor-to-average, and the curry tikka sauce possibly the worst I’ve ever had. The business seems to flourish given the presumably constant influx of international tourists wanting fish and chips; Russell’s does very little to showcase our national dish, and seems to treat our international friends with disdain. Avoid.

Russell’s used to do fantastic fish and chips - always a treat to get a takeaway from here. However, something has changed and not for the better. In fact it’s pretty insulting. We bought fish and chips this week only to find that the chips were just frozen catering chips, the type you’d get in a cheap pub meal or a motorway services cafe. They were definitely not the home made chips that Russell’s used to serve, and honestly if they think they can serve these to customers whilst charging a premium then they can prepare to lose customers hand over fist. If I want cheap frozen chips then I’ll just buy them from Tesco and cook them myself. I did leave a five star review a couple of years ago - I’ve now deleted it because it no longer reflects the quality of food being served.

The homamade tartare was terrible as well, I ordered 2 becuase usually I am sucker for tartare sauce but I left it almost all there. For that price I want much better food. We were disappointed with tonight's takeaway dinner, since on every previous visit our fish and chips have been of the highest quality, delicious and piping hot. It came as a shock that tonight's cod was hard and dry like cardboard, with only a hint of flavour. Equally, somehow, the chips were also flavourless - as if cooked hours before and briefly re-heated (we're speculating): certainly not the standard of fish and chips we were used to. We don't know if Russell's were having a bad night, have changed chefs or if the staff were overwhelmed, as the restaurant was very busy. But it will be a long while before we muster enough courage to gamble on another go.

First the bad news: the chips are clearly catering "pub" style chips now, the "Heinz" tomatoe sauce bottles refilled with that gloopy catering sauce that's synthetically sweet - when this place opened it was all hand cut, fresh, locally sourced potatoes - the type & source of which, would be written up on a chalkboard in the restaurant. Everything here has gone down hill over the past few years, it really is distinctively average now. The good news is that it's still better than a normal chip shop, the fish is tasty & the service is uicj, even when busy. But Russell's really is just average pub food now, nothing more.

Unfortunately, when we started our food, around 5 min after picking our order up, the chips were horrible. Tested like resuscitated leftovers from several hours earlier. We decided to have a treat after a lovely day in the Cotswolds. We decide to sit in at Russell's chip shop. We arrived at 6.50pm and was told they was not be serving untill 7pm we could not understand this as other people were eating or taking food away. We decided to wait and had a drink while waiting. Which was fine. We was then served and I asked if the batter was plain or beer batter as the Children's menu never mentioned beer batter but the adults menu did. We was told it is all beer batter. As I have a yeast allergy I was not able to have the fish or halloumi. Which I was looking forward to. We was not asked at all about any allergies. I then opted for the salmon. The food arrived and the salmon was small for £15.50 it was ok but a bit dry. I was told it would come with garlic butter but it didn't. My partner had the fish and chips and he asked if he could have normal peas instead of crushed there was no option for this. His meal arrived and he had a small hand full of chips hidden under his fish. We was was asked if our meal was ok and we expressed our dissatisfaction. of the qty of chips and she said she would get some more. We never received any more chips and we felt we was being laughed at. We left feeling disappointed.

We dined at the Fish & Chip section thinking it would be a little special, but they are obviously just using the Russell’s name. The Cod was certainly not catch of the day and the wafer thin bread was showing signs of mould although they didn’t charge us for it.

Very disappointed. Fish overcooked and tasted awful. Oil used for cooking tasted strange. Complained but staff uninterested. Will not be returning. I advise you to find an alternative place to eat.

Both the cod and the haddock with chips were very nice but the peas weren't to my liking, prefer normal mushy or garden peas. Being asked for a tip at a chip shop was a new one on me

Very disappointed. Had takeaway fish and chips and they were terrible. The batter was like rubber and the fish was really over cooked. Such a shame as the place looked really nice unfortunately the staff were more interested in having a laugh between themselves than...

Bit too fussy for me, afraid my tastes are slightly less affluent when it comes to a chippy. The fish didn’t have a great deal of batter and the chips were alright nothing to write home about. Salt and vinegar was also not included on the chips, you have to grab condiments separate - not the end of the world. The curry sauce was really not to my taste - not the classic yellow curry but an imitation of a tikka masala, not a great pairing with a chippy but to each their own I guess. The mushy peas were up to a bit much as well - not the marrowfat variety but some sweet and frilly petit pois. Also most expensive chippy in my life. Staff were friendly, can’t fault them.

We had haddock and chips for 4 people as a takeaway. The fish was overcooked and the chips undercooked. The oil tasted old and stale. We’ve ordered from Russell’s a number of times in the hope it gets better. It hasn’t.

We arrived at the pub on a cold wet Thursday evening, looked at the menu posted outside and decided to pop in. We were directed by a couple of locals outside into the eating side. The atmosphere was welcoming, as were the staff. We ordered faggots and mash, and lasagne. It was lovely. Hot and freshly cooked, decent portions very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend a visit.

We fell in love with this pub the first time we visited, and second time we returned, we were recognised and treated like regulars. (Nowadays rare and) outstanding hospitality, thank you! They grow their own vegetables: the food is fresh, seasonal and very well presented. Also, quite big portions. They do get very busy, therefore, if you want to eat or sit inside, you must book in advance. Otherwise, there is plenty of seating outside to enjoy the beautiful views.
