Sneaking home from work, I sometimes pop in for a seafood basket, a very specific order as who wants sweet chilli or garlic mayo when their homemade tartar sauce is so delicious. A little salad garnish helps.....I suspect only me with my cholesterol! Anyway, we all need a treat and would highly recommend it because its consistently good, and the measure of this business is that they know how to handle things when it goes wrong. Well done, I say 👏

We went to Russell's based on the review. We got there, they told us that we couldn't eat inside because they were closing in 15 minutes. We said no problem. We got our food and went to sit on their picnic tables. We hadn't been there for 5 minutes and a lady came and told us that we couldn't eat there because we got our food to go. I told the lady that we had asked to eat in but were told no. She said that we would still have to leave because there were other people that had paid the extra price to eat in. Which I thought was totally rude. The fish was soggy and not crispy. We have definitely had better fish in the UK. We wouldn't go back.

We visited Russels for lunch at 2.05pm on Tuesday 24th September. We looked on the door for opening times and it stated 2.30pm close. We went to the counter and the person behind the counter said we are only open for take away food, to which I asked if it would be ok to order and sit outside on the benches to eat and her answer was a determined NO. On that we walked out. Very inviting and won’t be going there again, unless we get an apology.

I was looking forward to having fish and chips when we visited the broadway. We ordered cod and chips and battered sausage and chips. When it arrived I was surprised with the lack of chips for the price we paid. And that was £37 with 2 soft drinks. I would have liked more chips so I skipped the service charge as I expected a better service. My tip would be fill up the plate more as I still felt hungry when we left.

Give this place a miss at all costs! I had hake and chips here recently and they were some of the worst fish and chips I have ever had - the batter was that greasy that the fish was sliding off the plate! The onion rings were much the same using the same, horrible, greasy batter. When I went to pay, they then had the audacity to ask if I wanted to give a tip! Which I declined....I will give a tip now which is to change occupation if this is the best food they can offer.

Visited Saturday 1st June, just after 2pm. Lunch service finished at 2.30pm. Very poor experience. Staff were audibly sighing as customers came in, and had a terrible attitude in general. Takeaway diners not allowed to use the benches outside - despite being empty - made no sense. Chips were poor-to-average, and the curry tikka sauce possibly the worst I’ve ever had. The business seems to flourish given the presumably constant influx of international tourists wanting fish and chips; Russell’s does very little to showcase our national dish, and seems to treat our international friends with disdain. Avoid.

Hugely disappointing. The chips were not the usual yummy ‘chip shop’ chips, they were dry and clearly frozen from a pack. The staff couldn’t even redeem themselves with good customer service as that was awful too.

Russell’s used to do fantastic fish and chips - always a treat to get a takeaway from here. However, something has changed and not for the better. In fact it’s pretty insulting. We bought fish and chips this week only to find that the chips were just frozen catering chips, the type you’d get in a cheap pub meal or a motorway services cafe. They were definitely not the home made chips that Russell’s used to serve, and honestly if they think they can serve these to customers whilst charging a premium then they can prepare to lose customers hand over fist. If I want cheap frozen chips then I’ll just buy them from Tesco and cook them myself. I did leave a five star review a couple of years ago - I’ve now deleted it because it no longer reflects the quality of food being served.

Lets start saying that the staff is brilliant, nice and professional. On the other hand the food was a total fail... Fish was dry and totally tasteless and the chips the same, total lack of any spice or condiment, fish dry and with a strange color. My partner got the grilled plaice and i was a big fail too, totally tasteless with not even the shadow of any tipe of spice, not even a bit of salt and pepper befre been cooked, terrible. The homamade tartare was terrible as well, I ordered 2 becuase usually I am sucker for tartare sauce but I left it almost all there. For that price I want much better food. Save yourself few pounds and go to Barnaby in Stratford, 100% much better.

We were disappointed with tonight's takeaway dinner, since on every previous visit our fish and chips have been of the highest quality, delicious and piping hot. It came as a shock that tonight's cod was hard and dry like cardboard, with only a hint of flavour. Equally, somehow, the chips were also flavourless - as if cooked hours before and briefly re-heated (we're speculating): certainly not the standard of fish and chips we were used to. We don't know if Russell's were having a bad night, have changed chefs or if the staff were overwhelmed, as the restaurant was very busy. But it will be a long while before we muster enough courage to gamble on another go.

After getting home and opening the box and trying the food it was definitely not what we expected, i believe that the chips we got were your standard chips out the freezer cooked in the oven not fried i might as well have had birds eye chips and done them at home and saved my money. Must’ve been busy as it is easter weekend and they had to grab more chips from the co op right next to the place after running out of the usual as these look nothing like the chips in other photos of the place. Also I must comment on the absolutely delicious curry sauce. Size was ample and great for the price. I would recommend Russell’s Chip Shop to anyone wanting wonderful Fish & Chips. If I had any negative it would be to the chef, not to put the fish on top of the chips. The oil in the fish batter goes onto the chips and can make a few a bit soggy. Still one of the best meals for taste and price.

First the bad news: the chips are clearly catering "pub" style chips now, the "Heinz" tomatoe sauce bottles refilled with that gloopy catering sauce that's synthetically sweet - when this place opened it was all hand cut, fresh, locally sourced potatoes - the type & source of which, would be written up on a chalkboard in the restaurant. Everything here has gone down hill over the past few years, it really is distinctively average now. The good news is that it's still better than a normal chip shop, the fish is tasty & the service is uicj, even when busy. But Russell's really is just average pub food now, nothing more.

We have had our fish and chips several times at Russell's so far and it always been a great treat, however today's experience wasn't good at all. We were served as a first customer with take away order, which I was hoping would guarantee us a super fresh dinner. Unfortunately, when we started our food, around 5 min after picking our order up, the chips were horrible. Tested like resuscitated leftovers from several hours earlier. Fish was really nice though...sadly, Russell's saving few pennies on couple of portions of chips left us with a big disappointment. Don't think we will be back. Hard, cold, chewy chips:( Not what you expect from the place when you pay over £60 for family meal....

We decided to have a treat after a lovely day in the Cotswolds. We decide to sit in at Russell's chip shop. We arrived at 6.50pm and was told they was not be serving untill 7pm we could not understand this as other people were eating or taking food away. We decided to wait and had a drink while waiting. Which was fine. We was then served and I asked if the batter was plain or beer batter as the Children's menu never mentioned beer batter but the adults menu did. We was told it is all beer batter. As I have a yeast allergy I was not able to have the fish or halloumi. Which I was looking forward to. We was not asked at all about any allergies. I then opted for the salmon. The food arrived and the salmon was small for £15.50 it was ok but a bit dry. I was told it would come with garlic butter but it didn't. My partner had the fish and chips and he asked if he could have normal peas instead of crushed there was no option for this. His meal arrived and he had a small hand full of chips hidden under his fish. We was was asked if our meal was ok and we expressed our dissatisfaction. of the qty of chips and she said she would get some more. We never received any more chips and we felt we was being laughed at. We left feeling disappointed.

Bit too fussy for me, afraid my tastes are slightly less affluent when it comes to a chippy. The fish didn’t have a great deal of batter and the chips were alright nothing to write home about. Salt and vinegar was also not included on the chips, you have to grab condiments separate - not the end of the world. The curry sauce was really not to my taste - not the classic yellow curry but an imitation of a tikka masala, not a great pairing with a chippy but to each their own I guess. The mushy peas were up to a bit much as well - not the marrowfat variety but some sweet and frilly petit pois. Also most expensive chippy in my life. Staff were friendly, can’t fault them.

Staff were delightful. Fish delicious but unfortunately chips poor- dry and bitty. Mushy peas were disgusting.

I came here with high expectations after hearing what locals had to say, however I was mildly dissatisfied. Maybe I would have felt less of this way if I didn’t end up waiting an hour for food. The children’s portions were very generous and fresh so I can not fault this. As for the salmon it was a handsome amount however the chips/salmon were way too greasy (dripping) and the chips undercooked in contrary to the trio basket which was over cooked. I do not believe that the prices reflected the quality of the food. However the staff were very efficient and friendly. Thank you.

The staff were lovely, the decor is fresh and we were quickly served. We liked the fact that the cooking is all done in the kitchen and those in the cafe are not subjected to all the frying. There are toilets on site. The food...

Great fish and chips here, we had haddock and a portion of scampi. The minted peas, tartare sauce and curry are homemade, and really good.

The food was ok, what I expected really. I had a prawn baggette and the prawns were pretty tasteless. Nice salad and good chunky chips, with a nice mug of coffee. The atmosphere was very local. Everyone seemed to know each other, and the guy next to me persisted to play his own music loudly through his telephone. A great place to people watch :)

We arrived at the pub on a cold wet Thursday evening, looked at the menu posted outside and decided to pop in. We were directed by a couple of locals outside into the eating side. The atmosphere was welcoming, as were the staff. We ordered faggots and mash, and lasagne. It was lovely. Hot and freshly cooked, decent portions very reasonably priced. I would highly recommend a visit.
