Zafran in Southend-on-Sea

Ordered via uber eats. Food Was pre ordered 3 hours In advance to ensure arrival on time. At 45 minutes late I called the restaurante and asked politely where the food was. I was met by a very angry Intimidating man who explained how unhappy he was I had ordered and lived 6 miles away and it had made things very arkward for his kitchen as we arent local. I advised the man he could have declined the order. The man became more and more irate and made it clear he was prioritising his local customers and would send our food when ever he deemed appropriate. Extremely rude and as you can see by the photos the food was thrown into bags and ripped open and items were missing. Absolutely terrible restaurante and takeaway. Avoid like the plague!

1 star is being extremely generous. Very rude owner called Abdul - his face is plastered all over the walls when you go in so you'll know who the owner is. Missing rice - called and said it's essential with our masala dishes - told we'd have to go and pick it up as they have no drivers. Explained the masala dish would go cold. Response: "do you not own a microwave?". Ordered keema naan - no meat within. Onion bhajis and chicken tikka was cold. Told "you've got your order, you either come and get rice or tough". So rude. Wrong items, cold food, missing food, and shocking customer service. Booked through Uber Eats so will be seeking a refund from an establishment not even fit to be called a restaurant.

People living in this area kindly avoid this dusty takeway.The owner and staff were so rude and treat like a begger. The food was cold raw and tasteless.Worst food experienced in my life. Please avoid this takeway dont waste money.

Sadly this place has gone down hill. My whole family and many friends use but they have become rude and now like to give out more sauce than any food! Having paid extra for a large I wouldn’t expect to get 6 small pieces of meat and a bucket of sauce (on both dishes)When queried be told you should have 8 pieces but tough go away. Really can live with mistakes but no excuse for rudeness. You can show off as many awards as you like but when you’re so rude word will get around! Shame on you Abdul!

Was disappointed had a chicken tikka n rice. The tikka had five small pieces of chicken and loads of sauce I ordered two £28 for two with only five small pieces of chicken!!! So they must count the chicken pieces to each serving. I won’t be using this place again what a rip off.

Amazing A*** best Indian food I have had in a long time

Order took much longer to arrive than the time specified on the website, and when it did something was missing. No apology just kept trying to persuade me to take a free samosa on the next order instead of apologising and agreeing to send out the missing item. Shame as the dhansak was fantastic (unlike most of the other dishes which are extremely vinegary) but we will not be ordering from them again.

Got told my delivery would be 45 mins to an hour turned up 10 minutes later was cold and the chicken tasted dry could tell it had just been sitting there very disappointing !

If I could give zero stars I would we waited over 45 minutes and had a missing dish they offered no apology and expected a family of four it eat a meal with one person watching. The food was below the standard that we expected and when the final dish did arrive all the food was cold. Also why offer free delivery over £12 and within a four mile radius which we are definitely in but yet had to pay for delivery. Next time we’re opting for fish and chips as it’s half the price and better quality.

Most disgusting food I ever tried. The chicken tikka masala was Red colour and sweet since when the curries are sweet. Chicken curry was nasty they just mixed chicken and big pieces of onions. Never getting again. Don't recommend!!!!

I've used this Indian for many years and the food,service and price have always been good,I ordered my usual meal last night with an extra meal for my grandson ,was informed by the man taking my order that the price has gone up by £10 more than we made it ..I asked why and he replied inflation and petrol prices...sorry but I will not be ordering from you again .. He said he has no access to his payment platform (first lie) and he couldn't help me and i should ring my bank. His awful attitude was a joke, told me it's not his problem and i was the only person it happened. I sent him via text message payment receipts proving what had happened but he didnt care. I will be following this up and getting the correct authorities involved as its daylight robbery and he can't do this to what was once a very loyal customers

Absolutely shocking customer service. Ordered through uber eats. Then waited by the door for the order which never turned up then a politely called to ask where the food was and they said they had apparently tried to deliver and call me but I had no phone call or attempted delivery then refused a refund or I could pay all again for food which I did not want to do as this was none of my fault. Shocking customer service. Never again ordering here.

Best Indian takeaway I've had Still the best I've had. Unfortunately I no longer order from here as one day the order took over an hour and forty minutes, with no communication, when it took no more than forty minutes on all previous orders. When raising this with other Indian takeaways, they have all offered a bottle of wine as a gesture of goodwill to make up for the delay. As this did not get offered I decided that my custom wasn't valued as it should be and now use another takeaway.

I ordered from here for the first time last night and it was very nice, the best I have tried in the area. I had a lamb dansak which was top notch. I ordered a delivery and it arrived both on time and hot.This will now be my regular place for a curry...well done and keep it up. Joe.

We've tried many indian takeaways in Leigh since moving to the area and they've never quite hit the spot. We tried Zafran after walking past it a few times and we have not been disappointed so far. Great flavours and very good value for money, plus they're always on time! I would highly recommend

The best balti I have tasted, none of the greasy stuff I have found on top of other Indian takeaways. The chicken tikka starter wraps are great for the kids not to spicy. We use this takeaway maybe once every 2 months and never had a bad dish. We have been missing things from the order before and when we have rung them up it was sorted straight away. Delivery driver were gloves and mask.

Really piping hot food that you can tell is prepared fresh. It’s our local & it never let us down. We love the Paratha’s and the portion sizes are big!

Used to be great food but lately orders are not turning up or the order is wrong. Incredibly rude staff who if you try and have a conversation with call you a liar. Save yourself the hassle and order from another Indian takeaway.

After unfortunately having to leave two previous negative reviews I am very pleased to say that We have since enjoyed two excellent meals and that Zafran has now returned to its fully excellent standard. I would also say that I had unfortunately made some mistakes with my online ordering but upon phoning Zafran they pulled out all the stops in delivering me that which I had got wrong/forgotten. I look forward to ordering again soon

My daughter was desperate for a Zafran for her birthday. With the Covid situation we weren’t sure. But Zafran were open and didn’t disappoint. The food is always tasty. Our daughter was a happy girl

Had been meaning to try this takeaway for some time, never managed to get round to it though. With a number of takeaways being closed at the moment we decided to give it a go. We decided to have the chefs set menu as you can more or less choose what you want. In retrospect this was a bad move as we only saved about a pound and had to substitute what we wanted for another dish. ( We wanted onion bhajee as one of the sides but that's not allowed even though it the same price or cheaper than the listed side dishes!).The food arrived ahead of time which was good so only 35 minute wait. The poppadoms were stale, not a good start. The sheek kebab was dry and tasteless and was rather unappetising to look at, the accompanying salad didn't look very fresh either. The chicken tikka starter was good but absolutely tiny! Mains were better, the mehti gosht was not very spicy, I had asked for it to be madras hot but it wasn't and also it didn't in my opinion have enough fenugreek. Lamb dopiaza was good as was the rice. Overall I think we probably wouldn't order from here again.

We have just enjoyed another delicious meal from Zafran. The meal of prawn and lamb jalfraezi, rices, garlic naans and sides arrived on time, piping hot and absolutely delicious.

This is the best Indian food in the area to my mind. I’ve been going there for a few years, and with the same expert chef running it, quality is consistently very good. It only does takeaway and delivery, there’s no sit-in dining.The menu is extensive, with all the usual Indian curries but also some excellent specials. Best of all for me, they do a methi curry - with fenugreek - bitter and delicious, it sets off the spices deliciously and is packed with vegetables as well as meat - lamb is best.I go back again and again!

We ordered our food at 6:30pm online and it states that it will take no longer than 60 mins. We received it at 8:40. When we tried to call to ask if it was actually coming the phone lines were constantly busy - we tried calling 180 times over 20 mins and it didn’t go through to ring once. We were just about to order a different takeaway as we had to presume it was never going to come when it finally arrived. We complained to the driver about the long wait and lack of communication and he apologised but didn’t really seem to care. He nearly made off with my change (£6) and then took so long counting it out we suspect deliberately so we’d give him the tip - obviously can’t say for sure though. When we finally started eating my partner found a small string of metal in his curry. Food didn’t even taste great. We rang up to complain and when we got through and explained they apologised and promised a refund, although he didn’t say when that would be processed and we will chase it up if it doesn’t materialise. Won’t be reordering.

Tonight was a long overdue treat!!! Previously everything has always been amazing! Tonight we ordered a meal for 3. We ordered it at 6pm with the understanding it would be delivered within 60 mins. We paid on PayPal. After 60 minutes no delivery turned up. We tried calling numerous times but the line was constantly engaged ... we even emailed them. After 1 hour 40 minutes a driver arrived. Thankfully I actually checked the order whilst the driver was here.... 2 items were missing ( one a main course). The driver was lovely and very helpful and said he’d return to the restaurant to let them know and then returned 20 minutes later with the rest of the missing order. He also said there was a problem with the phone lines but in the nicest possible way if you don’t have capacity to have customers contact you then don’t take their money. Therefore the 3 of us could not eat at the same time which isn’t good enough and essentially our night was ruined. We spent over £42 for a lovely night which was a total waste of money as food and customer service terrible. Also the original food that arrived was stone cold - the peshawari naan was doughy in the middle and not cooked properly. They also messed up the chutneys to go with the poppadoms substituting a mango with a creamy one which we don’t like and just went in the bin. We’ve recommended this place to so many people but won’t do it again. No apology from them - not even an extra poppadom for rubbish experience. AVOID.

Have used this take away regularly for several years without problem but have now experienced problems with service, delivery time, food temperature and missing items for the second time in a row (last experience 26th October: please see previous review). Food ordered at 5:20 but not delivered until 7pm despite being advised online with 60 minutes max and two phone calls to chase up. Arrived with missing item (same as last time) and completely stone cold. Phoned to complain but not interested and blaming delivery drivers (this really is not the customers problem as they can always sack them and hire new ones). Will not now try again for some time, if ever.

Best takeaway, best curry in the local area

Normally an excellent take away but tonight (26/10) was well below it's normal standardFirstly, unable to order on website (did not recognise my password so requested another which it also did not recognise). Phoned restaurant and not really interested but told me I could contact the website supplier, although unable tell me how, and that I could order online which I then did and was told would be delivered in 45 minutes to one hour.Secondly, contacted the website supplier who I tracked down myself and they gave me a new password which still wouldn't work so still waiting for them to come back to me again.Thirdly, waited almost one and a quarter hours for food to arrive so telephoned and they said they were waiting for a driver.Lastly, food arrived after one and a half hours but was cold and not satisfactory, i.e. no fried onions with sheikh kebab.Driver said that the restaurant was "overwhelmed after receiving a £350 order". This is fair enough, and good luck to them, but why continue to take orders or, at the very least, why not warn customers that there might be a long delay and give them the chance of going elsewhere.Will probably still go back as I hope this is a one off blip and providing that I can once again order online.

Rice dry and hard, curry was like water and the meat was worse than fridge raiders

When you have an open sign before 11 pm and wave your loyal customers away.. .Not amused.

Ordered for a birthday and was told it would only take an hour. After calling 1 hour 15 mins later we were told it still hadn’t left the restaurant yet and the staff on the phone arguing with me over when I ordered my meal.Very disappointed, staff were very rude and there was no effort or care when asking for an update and after a while we gave up and cancelled the order.I hope this may of been a one off but it’s safe to say I won’t be ordering from here again after this!

Avoid worst Indian restaurant by far. The staff was rude the order was wrong and when the nan bread fell off the plate from the waiters hand then he picked it up from the floor and tried serving it to me untill i kicked off and left. They kept threatening of calling the police. And thers no hygiene for that restaurant. GUYS SAVE YOURSELF THE POISON AND STAY AWAY.

I was extremely pleased with the quality of both the food and service at this place. The owner and all the other staff are fantastic and very friendly, Ive eaten here twice now and I will definately be returning many more times.

We usually get our takeout from Zafran, and the food is always delicious. Although this time, we were were very disappointed to open up the bag with the plain naan in, to find it completely burnt- it was pretty much black ! It was totally in-edible, and we had to just throw it away. As everyone else was already tucking in, we felt it wasn't worth asking for a new one to be delivered as the food would have gone cold.

Consistently wrong with orders online over the last few months and when I asked what was the reason I was told not too buy here anymore. Long time weekly customer here, hopefully the owner reads this and sacks the donkey that's managing the place atm.

Very disappointed with my order, I expected outstanding flavour and my meal was disgusting. Lamb was inedible, gristly and tough, and passanda was flavourless. Poppodom was incomplete, only 3/4 of it there!

Heard and read great reports and reviews about Zafran, none of it seems true. One of the dishes my family had was Tiger Prawn Goan Masala, it looked radioactive and lacked taste; it was gelatinous and only had 4 prawns in it. The rest of the dishes were also pretty tasteless, indeed it was so bland that we had to add salt to one of them. The side dishes were acceptable. I would not recommend this take away at all.

He tenido muchas tiendas a lo largo de los últimos años, pero los estándares han decrecido los últimos 12 - 18 meses. Pensé que iba a intentarlo y colocó una gran orden con un grupo de amigos. Dos de nosotros pedimos el mismo curry que queríamos caliente y picante y cuando fue entregado fue muy suave. Tampoco tenían ya olvidado spice o pedido. Ambos errores ocurren, pero cuando me manera llamó a corregirlo el hombre era desagradable y no complaciente. Él no enviar 2 nuevo curry y otros pidieron el retorno que yo estaba feliz de hacerlo él podía ver error además de que estaban prácticamente intactas. El 2 nuevo curry era tan caliente que no podía comer. No será con ellos.

Solía comer en Zafran todo el tiempo, y sí, la comida era genial, sin embargo, empezó a bajar los estándares y la comida se convirtió en la media. Había un incidente donde la comida sabía a sal pura y no podía comer nada y me llamó y me dijo "Ah, él debe de manos de sal en vez de azúcar me sacará el dinero la próxima vez. "La próxima vez no es suficiente buena queremos la comida que pedimos y que sea comestible. También había muchos incidentes de comida ser olvidado y tener que llamar y esperar a ser preparado y trajeron de vuelta que por entonces todo el mundo había terminado, y la mía estaba frío. El propietario también cruzado la línea cuando se convirtió en más que demasiado digamos comprar lencería de veranos ann y me sentí tan incómodo que no he vuelto desde entonces.

We have been getting our take away food from Zafran for about six months. The food is always delicious. The service is fast and the food is oven hot when delivered. We started to use Zafran on the recommendation of a friend who said that they cook 'the best curry dishes in the area'. They were right and we have not even considered going elsewhere since our first delivery. Sometimes the odd item is missed out of the delivery. Zafran is VERY busy. But as soon as we call them they ensure the item is brought to the house immediately. This week the big boss man delivered our food and checked each item off with us at the door, to make sure everything we had ordered was in the bag. What a lovely gesture. The prawn pathia on purée is my favourite. Sweet and spicy, freshly made and wonderful. I can't imagine ordering food from anywhere else now. Very, very good and I would definitely recommend.

Having been recommended this by a friend I was really looking forward to a great curry! My mother had a curry which said (hot) and came up extremely hot, a lot hotter than any vinadloo I have had. I had a lamb dabawal which lacked flavour and tasted very salty. Overall not a great experience...naan was ok and potatoes where ok.

We have been ordering from Zafran for the last 2 years and the food has always been fantastic (although have had a couple of items missing on occasions) but ordered a takeaway from here on Thursday and could not believe the difference in the food! My vegetable curry just tasted like watery chopped tomatoes with a few peas thrown in, chicken tikka main was very dry, my husbands hot tikka massala was not hot and the lamb very fatty and chewy. To top it off the peshwari naan once broken apart turned out to be a plain naan! Phoned up to complain and after speaking to the manager who was also trying to speak to someone else at the same time (very rude!) interrupted my husband halfway through explaining and said we could have our next takeaway on the house. Phoned them tonight to order our free takeaway and was put onto the manager who said he did not agree to a free takeaway just a free vegetable curry! My husband explained that wasn't all that was wrong with our order and that he had said we could have the whole takeaway free but he said that's all he told him about even though he had interrupted halfway through explaining!! Very rude and am very disappointed as we will not be ordering from here again. Have ordered a lot of takeaways from them the last 2 years and you would think they would want to keep our custom!!

So bad. We order a curry every week and we were impressed with the quality here after being let down by an old favourite. More than one occasion where there have been missing items. This week they forgot three items. We realised onion salad was missing when we had our popadoms and called to complain, they bought them out. Then when we moved onto our main meal, we realised our main dish of madras and our garlic naan was missing. Very rude on the phone - said we should have noticed missing dishes when we noticed the onion salad was missing!!! They said over the phone that they could either bring our food (that we have paid for!!!) or we could have some freebies with good will next week. To be honest, just get it right - we don't want freebies we just want what we paid for. Very poor show, won't be back.

Such nice people. We overpaid on Saturday due to having a few too many and they bought the money back to us on Sunday. The food is always excellent too. One tiny thing is that they are a bit tight with the onion salad but hey! I can chop an onion. 5 Stars!

We tried this on the recommendation of a friend and we have not been disappointed. Been having a regular weekly takeaway curry for about a month. The food arrives promptly, usually within 30 minutes. The food is hot, spicy and well flavoured. The portions are generous.

Twelve months ago this would have been a 5 start review. The food was rich and full of flavour and I could see why it came so highly recommended when I first moved into the area... And it stayed that way until a couple of months ago when I started to notice a few slips which until tonight, I'd made excuses for and kept going back anyway. Tonight was the last time. The food comes with little or no flavour. I noticed this lacking a while back and not minding a spicy-hot dish, I've been asking them to fire it up a bit. But even when it does get a bit more heat, the flavour is just not there. Not even close. As I served out tonight's curry, already slightly annoyed at another wrong order received, I noticed the rice start to float as my plate filled with water, diluting what was already a thin, weak, and incredibly disappointing madras. The other dishes were, and have consistently been, equally weak.Perhaps it's new owners, management or chef, or all of these things but unfortunately this sub-par food has become the rule rather than the exception and so I'm afraid that's it. We are done.

I have had the set meal twice this month. If I am honest and had some dis point this would be plenty for two. I had Prawn Puri. It's spicy and huge. Followed by Lamb Dansak - not too hot here so really tasty. Bindi Bhaji, chapatti and the opposing and dips that come too. Delicious and huge. Promptly delivered

This has to be the best Indian takeaway ever. Food is consistently fabulous, staff are friendly and really efficient. Would highly recommend.

On Saturday 23rd February myself and my partner decided to order an Indian Takeaway. My partner likes the Zafran so we ordered from there again even know we have had delivery problems the past two times.We ordered meals for two people and were told it would be a 45minute wait. Not unreasonable on a Saturday night. However, after 70minutes with no sign of the food I phoned Zafran. I was told that the delivery went out some time ago so it should arrive very soon. At the 80minute mark I phoned again, where I was met with the response that the driver is just round the corner. I then was phoned by the driver himself to ask where my address was. Being that I live on Bournemouth Park Road in Southend-on-Sea I was surprised that the driver didn't seem to know where this was. By the 90minute mark I was phoned once again by the driver wondering where my block of flats were. Explaining to him that I lived in a flat (top half of a house) he seemed confused. When he arrived he showed me the delivery address and for some strange reason he got confused by the fact that the address had added in 'Top Door Bell' This apparently is mighty confusing and he was in fact looking for some marvellous grand tower block. Just happy to have our food I thanked him and he left. I phoned the Zafran to explain why he was so late and told them that to stop this happening in future to either myself or anyone else that he should explain to his driver that 'Top Door Bell' just means to use the Top Door Bell. At this stage it is relevant to explain that although my door bell clearly says flat A which I am, the past two times we have ordered from the Zafran, my neighbour has been awoken by the attempted delivery of my Indian takeaway. So having phoned Zafran to explain this I then opened my takeaway up to find that it was almost stone cold. Immediately phoning them back upset at the fact my food was now cold, I was instructed to not worry 'I'll sort you out next time you order'. Not being happy with this I wanted something to be done immediately. At this stage I was told that it wasn't the restaurants fault it was the drivers, so nothing could be done. This is explained was not good enough and that I wanted a refund. I was told that this could not be done but don't worry 'I'll sort you out next time'. Angry at this point I explained that there wasn't going to be a next time and that I wanted to be refunded as I was charged for edible goods and what I received was not edible. The Zafran once again explained that it wasn't their fault. Extremely angry at this stage I threatened that if a refund was given then I could by right claim fraudulent activity on my credit card; as again I was charged for edible goods but did not receive edible goods.The final straw was at this stage the person on the phone representing the Zafran said words to this effect. 'Oh right you want to do that then do you, well enjoy your meal!' Then he hung up on me. This in my mind is an absolute disgrace. I will never order from Zafran again and I will inform people in as many ways as possible to inform of how I was treated by this 'award winning' restaurant.

We had a take-away from this Indian a few evenings ago and we were very impressed.We had a deal on a set menu for 2 at £25.00. Fantastic value for what we had. Chicken tikka dansak and chicken ceylon were our main dishes in this meal and both were cooked fantastically well. The size of the curry was as the headline says was enormous even with our hearty appertite. We will make this a regular place to call in food from.It is a pity they dont have a sit-down venue, as if they did we would use that as well. Very impressed all round. Prompt delivery as well. Deffo 5 Stars.

Bought around 20 meals from here in the past few months. The best Indian I've ever had, the quality of the chicken is amazing and the overall taste is exquisite. Very highly recommended.

Ordered prawn shashlick which is £10 and got chicken instead! Telephoned them up and awaiting to see what happens.... 3 bits of chicken in the chicken Korma...not much to divide between 4 people! Normally this is a 5* place as I always order from them...I just hope we caught them on an off day and that it isn't going down hill.

Ordered two chefs 'specials'. Very disappointing. Lots of sauce and a few pieces of meat. If this is goan food then they must be easily pleased. More food less ketchup please Mr.chef.

I am quite shocked by the negative reviews left here. Everyone is different: here is my experience. I have been eating Zafran's food for three years. This is a restaurant striving to differentiate itself from the competition by varying its menu and offering something different, as well as more familiar dishes. The signature dishes are not mainstream and it is worth discussing the ingredients and flavour before ordering, which the staff are very pleased to do as they are passionate about the food they prepare. if you just like you're standard curry as the English have come to know, then you'll find something for you here too but if you want to be more adventurous with authentic dishes and some with an interesting twist, then you'll not be disappointed. Highly recommended.

Please never ever order from this horrible place! Im usually not so harsh but the food here is terrible!! Ordered their so-called "signature award winning dishes" and it was a disaster!! The owner has an attitude and I'm sure never bothered tasting his own food post 2012

I cant believe this place hasn't been closed down...This didn't resemble food - it tasted like soap in Fairy Liquid sauce. STAY AWAY - DO NOT EVEN CONTEMPLATE GOING HERE. After 2 mouthfuls everything went in the bin - we spent £27.00 on a takeaway for 2UTTERLY DISGUSTING -
