Yum Sing in Leicester

Always blown away by the food and friendly staff, lots of great veg starters and mains eg paneer/babycorn in chilli and salt and aubergine in black bean sauce are two firm favourites in our household. Alan also makes some amazing deserts too!

A great little place at the end of the Oadby parade. It can be quite easy to miss and most might not see it as it's not in the middle of the parade. However I highly recommend it, the food was amazing, the staff were great and a good location overall with free street parking available. Would come here again.

When asked for water we were told we don’t have enough jugs, but came and gave glass of water to my daughter, then poured water in my wife’s alcoholic drink. Service was not that great, we asked for service charge to be taken off, waitress said it out loud in front restaurant full of diners, if you refuse to pay service you will not be welcomed here again. We were shocked at that comment. The menu states 10% discretionary service charge but waitress would not take no for an answer. We were shocked at the attitude paid and walked out because of their attitude. When we walked out of restaurant I took photo of the menu on the window. The owner came out, my daughter told him look it says discretionary, the owner said the same you will not be welcomed here. Which business says that! Suggest anyone going there for a meal try not paying the service charge see your experience. I guarantee you will experience the same…personally nobody should be going to this place.

Went to enjoy a good evening meal in this restaurant. However, staff service is very very poor and rude. Asked for service charge to be removed we were told it is mandatory, however the menu states it’s 10% discretionary. The waitress said if you don’t pay you will not be welcomed here.. her attitude was very very rude. I recommend nobody goes to this restaurant… I am still annoyed by the rude comments. The owner came out and repeated the same comments we can refund your discretionary service charge but will not welcome you back

Very good Chinese Cantonese food 😋

Food and service ok ish but be prepared for the extra extra charges added on.

May 4th 2024 my husband and I went to have a meal the food we had was delicious we could not have chosen better started with yum Tom soup then share frie rice with monk fish and king prawn chow main with crispy noodles followed by lemon drizzle cake ice cream and trimming it was so good and the service was so good and also had a fantastic Irish coffee I would say it was a fantastic start to my pre birthday celebrations thank you for a lovely evening 5 star the way

Firstly the food is exceptional. The service is just right. A good mixture of welcoming, helpful and attentive but not obtrusive. It was my first visit and I will definitely be returning soon.

1st time eating there, would recommend it, service, food and atmosphere were excellent, definitely will be going back.

Expected to pay an optional service charge and got really angry when we didn't want to. I doubt this actually goes to service staff

Food is OK little over priced for what it was meal felt rushed as we were told had to vacate the table by certain time, service was good but was different with other member of staff one was friendly and one was not so friendly. Little cramped inside and lighting was too dim. Overall its a OK place if you like Chinese Aromatic Duck is nice!!

We hadn’t been out for a full Chinese meal in years and this was pretty good. Soft shell crab starter was a new thing for us to try and it was a success. Yuk sung chicken however was a big disappointment and almost all veg . The best main was prawns in a Korean sauce, the others all quite acceptable. It was a good evening, not too noisy and price wise good value.

why is there no website or menu online? how can a business be so backward it doesn't have a website or an online menu. I heard about this place and wanted to order but they dont have a menu online!

I love this place but it is expensive so I only go for a special occasion. Not too sure if they cook with MSG or not but I hope not as it can be dangerous to certain people.

Food was poor, staff were trying to pressure me into paying a service charge which isn't compulsory. Started speaking loudly saying I'm not paying a service charge maybe in an attempt to embarrass me into paying.

There isn’t a vegan menu, however the vegetarian menu can be adapted to be vegan. They even had vegetarian duck (made with Soya).

Fantastic food and service as always

My family and I have been visiting Yum Sing for at least 10 years, the service and quality is consistent. Soon as you walk in, you get a lovely warm welcome. All the staff are so friendly. One thing that lets this restaurant down is the decor, I think they need to update it.

Oh my this place is exceptional. The service is incredible very friendly efficient and nothing is too much trouble. We were celebrating our friends Golden wedding anniversary and they made it very special. The food is utterly delicious and beautifully presented. It was our first visit but it certainly won't be the last. Highly recommended

Food is good. Service is average. Boss is extremely friendly but we feel like we get over charged when we do visit. The occasionally gives us complimentary desserts but we get charged onto the bill? It’s abit sneaky.

consistently brilliant for at least 25 years

Taking the recommendation from one of my neighbours, I booked a table for my family. I had to wait two weeks to get the space for four people on Friday evening. There was no question of food and its quality. However, the food price and service charges made me realise why they have regular customers. It is a worth trying restaurant in Oadby but bear in mind it may not be a regular place to visit for many people.

Great meal again at the Yum Sing. Thanks to Alan and his team for the superb food and service. It was lovely to return again and enjoy one of our favourite restaurants.

5 stars. Allan and the team are wonderful. Been going here for years. The food is always authentic and the service is great. Prices aren’t the cheapest but the food is worth it. Good wine selection too. Hidden gem in Oadby.

Ordered takeaway to celebrate my wife’s 80th birthday. Unfortunately they were so busy we had to book takeaway 2 days prior to birthday ! Guess that speaks for itself 😀 My 80th birthday was celebrated in similar style four months ago. Both meals were ready on time for collection and were absolutely delicious. Portions were generous ( had enough to use next day ) In these Covid times it was the only way to celebrate with a meal. Alan and team are very friendly and helpful , and have no hesitation in recommending Yum Sing 😀😀

The standard of service is always first class and the food is to the same standard this is based on using this restaurant for over 25 years

This is honestly THE BEST Cantonese food I've ever had, and defo on my top 3 most favourite foods I've EVER tasted. I would highly recommend Yum Sing. I had sweet 'n' sour chicken with egg fried rice, the coated chicken was delicious and had an amazing texture, as well the scrumptious sauce which was perfectly not too sweet. The egg fried rice was AMAZING and complementary to all the tastes from the chicken. Consistently good, even for take-away!!! All round⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!!

We had an absolutely brilliant mid week family meal here last week. Delicious food, wide menu selection but most worth noting was the amazing service. Some of the best service in a restaurant as it was friendly and attentive without being intrusive. This restaurant is on the smaller side so really adds to that personal service feel and there was a great atmosphere for a mid week evening out. We will definitely be back.

As always Alan and his team produce the best food. This year's New Year feast was exceptional and as always he remembers I don't eat sea food and goes out of his way to offer an alternative for me. The staff are always superb and the food as always exceptional . Thank you for a fantastic evening and as always you had us roaring with laughter.

If you want a top class meal with excellent customer service then a visit to this small restaurant is a must. We opted for the 4 course set menu @£35pp, The food was fantastic, we couldn’t eat it all so the manager asked if we wanted to box it up and take it away. The home made deserts were excellent. This is not the cheapest restaurant in the area, but the place is spotless, the foods excellent and all of the staff are so friendly, we will definitely be returning.

Here for us is a very special restaurant, that we use to visit regularly. For various reasons we hadn't been for a long while. So it wad great to be back and to see Alan and his team again. Just loved it all. Food was great and enjoyed some lovely wine. Will be back soon.

Brilliant place! Came here as a group of 7, with 2 vegetarians. They allowed us to order the set menu but they adapted it and brought out specific vegetarian dishes separate from the meat ones but kept the same price! Lots of food for the price, and they let us take the leftovers in a bag as there was so much lovely food but we couldn't finish it all! Excellent, friendly staff and lovely warm atmosphere. I'd say it's the best of its genre in Leicester, and I'd absolutely recommend it to everyone!

Wow..... we visited here yesterday with friends and had a superb meal. The staff were friendly and lovely. The food was just lovely, great choice and very tasty. Would definitely come again.

Evening meal for 5 friends. Five blokes had the meal for six and it was both enough in quantity and excellent in quality. We arrived after 9pm

It seems Chinese food is a little out of fashion these days.. with the rise of so many other cuisines to choose from. If you want good Chinese food in Leicester....look no further, that's if you can get a table, it's very busy... I asked for a takeaway at first, but they only do one maybe two takeaways a night.. as they want focus on the restaurant. (How refreshing to hear) We managed to get a table for two at short notice and we were on a time limit as the table had been booked for later. The place isn't massive but it was full and lively... staff are warm & friendly. Sesame Toast & Spare Ribs for starters followed by King Prawn (Ming Style) and Chicken (Szechuan style) I have to say every course was cooked to perfection and ingredients are all quality. I doubt you could find better anywhere in Leicestershire. I highly recommend this place. Anyone who has read other reviews I written will know I don't always give 5 stars... only if it's deserved.

Went for dinner with family staff didnt know there own menu.food not that good and when the bill came they put on a 20 0/0 service charge when ask why was told big party of people get charged this. There was only 7 of use was told it is in the menu why would you look for that?. Would even go back over priced for what you get.

Overpriced restaurant with very old décor. The duck is very good and the chilli sauce is delicious but I find the staff very rude, the service is awful. They only do 2 sittings for dinner, 6:30pm (way too early) and 9pm (a bit too late) and so you're always rushed and reminded that the table is only for 2 hours. The main dishes are nothing to rave about and it's very inconsistent. Definitely a much better idea to get a Chinese takeaway (it'll save you money and disappointment)!

We went here as a group of 4 on a Friday night. We booked a bit late and were able to get a table at 9.15pm. Despite the late booking we didn’t feel rushed at all and were encouraged to take our time as the kitchen won’t be closed until all guests confirm they do not wish to order anything. As someone who was only in Leicester for the weekend I thought this was a nice touch, as in London this would never happen.In terms of decor, it’s a bit dated but that’s not to say it’s bad. I guess it reminded me of why I used to see when I went out for a Chinese back in the 90’s.The staff in general were very friendly, and attentive. Our waitress was happy to discuss the flavours we liked and make recommendations accordingly. There was one waitress who was s but moody but having interacted with 4 different staff members, I’m putting the one moody one down to her maybe having an off day, as the others were great.The food was good. I would not say I was amazed but it was a good standard overall.It was a tad pricey but I think this is considered upper end in Leicester so with that in mind it wasn’t too bad I guess.Overall, I would definitely recommend.

I know this place has been around for a long time, but I discovered it a couple of years ago. That said; since then I’ve been back half a dozen times - it’s that good, and I’m not on its doorstep.

I used to visit regularly but with a young family, got out of the habit. Visited today and it was as good as ever, easily the best Cantonese food in Leicester. Friendly and attentive service and priced right for the quality of the dishes.

We visited on a busy saturday evening, place still needs abit of brightening up, still dark inside. Service was not so great, we all visited for the first time so we were unsure what to order. The lady who took our order recommended a few dishes when we had asked, but some of the things she said we could not understand. Starters we ordered the yuk sing with chicken and lettuce this had no flavour and full of celery pieces!! The garlic prawns were good. We received our mains thereafter but it wasn’t what we had ordered. Mains we had the lamb, which was full of flavour very tasty, we also ordered sweet & sour chicken which we thought lacked flavour. The vegetarian noodles were okay. It seems the other tables next to us were not happy with the service too, staff are not friendly and welcoming. Another waiter she would not even smile. The bill arrived and we realised there was a service charge which is always discretionary we don’t have to pay, but the man at the counter did not mention anything. For the service we received we didn’t want to pay the service charge. It is pricey for what you pay. You would expect better quality in food. We won’t be returning anytime soon am afraid.

Wow what a find! Such a beautifully decorated place with and the service provided was impeccable. We went on a Tuesday and it's was completely full. Alan and his family went out of their way to explain all the possible vegan options. The food was served family style on large plates. We had vegan yuk sung and chili potatoes to start, which were both delicious, then an aubergine and a mushroom xo main with chlli rice. All cooked well with great flavour and fresh. Would highly recommended this place, can't believe it's been there 30yrs and I've only just found out about it!!

Went there with local friends who were regulars, the prawn ribs and seaweed starter were really good, the Peking duck good as was the main dishes fruit was spectacular. Unusually they have a fantastic wine list Recommend but must book

This place has been around the corner from me for years, and they have not updated the place in ages its dark and old and the food is really expensive.

We've been to Yum Sing lots of times over the years, usually for Special Occasions. The food and service is excellent. Good atmosphere and the Restaurant fills up very quickly. I would advise that you always book.

I’ve been eating at Yum Sing for over 15 years and Alan and his team have got it nailed as far as service, attention to detail and tasty,freshly cooked food! I particularly enjoy the wide range of vegetarian options including the paneer in chilli and salt starter and the Aubergine in black bean sauce. Keep up the great work!

Absolutely superb meal. I've not visited here since I was probably a child and the food is still brilliant. A little pricey but worth every penny.

Excellent meal here with friends. Firstly the staff are very helpful and obliging. The starters all came hot and very tasty especially the chicken garlic chilli salt. The mains are big, so as a little eater ask for a doggy bag. All very different but the taste was a mix of sharp and spicy. The best Cantonese we have had for many years. Well run restaurant, but you had better book so not disappointed.

I have been to this place a few times, and food hit and miss. 1st time i went the food was on point. 2nd time it was very average. and the last time, again average but portions very small for some reason. but what surprised me its HALAL food. Never once did it state it was iron the menu or on the front shop font.

My family and I love this place, we dine here often and always feel welcome. Food is good, a nice hidden gem in Leicester.

This place is vastly over rated and lives on its previous good reputation. I have not been for a while and revisited recently. I have to say the food is at best average. The service is not the best, the waitress seemed like she wanted us to get the hell out so she could go home and even though we clearly hadn’t finished eating seemed to want to clear our table. The prices are extortionate, best described as a rip off. In my opinion, there are far far better Chinese restaurants on high street in town where the quality of food is better, the service is good and the prices are better.
