Karamay Western China Cuisine in Leicester

Very good food and something different in Leicester! I have been to Karamay a couple of times now and each time the food was delicious and the service was great too. It’s one of the few Chinese places that my parents like as they normally aren’t massive fans of the cuisine. However the dishes at Karamay are so flavoursome and have a nice amount of spice. The chicken wings are amazing! Will definitely be returning.

Been to this restaurant a few times and I absolutely LOVE this place! Authentic Uyghur food, large portions, great service and a cuisine different to the common ones you find everywhere. I've tried their lamb skewers, very well flavoured and succulent, steamed/fried dumplings are yummy, the hand-pulled noodles so delicious which I've had with kung-po chicken, the beef leghman a must try, and their crispy chicken which was so enjoyable! A wonderful place to enjoy a meal out and the family who own the place are wonderful too. I also love the fact that they serve HMC meats as it's rare to find a halal chinese place and owned by Muslims too. Deffo recommend!

This rather excellent Uyghur Restaurant provides a different take on Chinese cuisine which can often be very average. The Karamay is not average. The staff are friendly and will explain all the dishes; try some of the home made noodles!

Okay, hands down one of the tastiest lamb skewers I have had in my life! my mouth is watering just thinking about it. It was spicy, crunchy on the outside tender inside. wow. will definitely come back for them,

Not being the biggest fan of Chinese food, this really was a revelation. The cuisine is western Chinese or Uighur cuisine so not typical Chinese. The staff are very friendly and helpful too.

Chinese restaurants in the UK provinces tend to be fairly predictable, so Karamay is quite a find. The Uyghur cuisine is heartier and more filling than the usual Chinese offerings. Service was impeccable and prices very reasonable.

Ate at the Karamay restaurant on London Road last week and was very pleasantly surprised. The food and service were excellent. Will definitely be visiting again very soon. The ambience was lovely too.

I've been to this restaurant twice now and both times it has been excellent. The menu is original as well as having familiar dishes and all the dishes I tried were incredibly tasty. The service was discreet, friendly and professional. I will definitely return again.

Karamay is one of Leicester's most consistent restaurants.

Ordered hot and sour soup, and beef noodles, veg noodles and schewan beef and egg fried rice. Good food at a reasonable price. Lots of South East Asian people so I think it must be authentic food. Tastes good to me. London Road Leicester.

We had grilled lamb and Singapore style chicken noodles was delicious . However expected different style noodles (vermicelli)but that might be my lack of knowledge. Anyway was yummy .

As someone who lives in the Dongbei region of [NE] China and eats halal food [usually Xinjiang food] I am really pleased to have found this absolute gem of a restaurant on London Road in my hometown! This restaurant is also frequented by Chinese students so you can be assured that this is the real deal- unlike most other Chinese takeaway places!

OK so I've been saying I want to go Karamay for ages after hearing good things. So I finally decided to do it as I was walking along London Road (this is the new Karamay not the old one).

Came with our extended family and two young boys . Possible one of the freshest meals we have had in a restaurant . Lovely cuisine , good hospitality all made for a great Friday family evening . Recommend warmly to all.

We dropped into Karamay ahead of a show at the De Montfort Hall. We ordered Singapore rice and sweet and sour garlicky prawns and pot of green tea.

Visited Karamay shortly after they opened and was very impressed on our first visit. Last night we were shocked at the quality of the food. My beef noodles contained so little meat it was a joke! May as well not have bothered to call it beef noodles. Hand made noodles were thick and chewy and the food was very oily. My son has the chicken choamein and his was nothing special and there was litte to diferentiate it from any other Chinese restaurant except the fact it contained barely any chicken! I counted 4 pieces. Very bad value for money and certainly will not be returning. On the plus side everything was flavoursome and arrived promptly.

Authentic Xinjiang food. Like the various noodle dishes like Dingding fried noodles. Lamb skewers were high recommended!

Service is good, however, food not so great. I found all the dishes to be extremely salty and they were also very expensive with moderate portion sizes. Came to try, doubtful that I will ever return.

Really nice food but for the price you receive relatively small portions which then makes it relatively expensive. When they first opened portions were generous and proportionate to the price. Sadly the amount of protein even in a beef fried rice is small and the grilled skewers of meat are extremely small for what you pay. However, you will not find fault in the flavour as it has been consistently delicious.

One of my favourite places to go and eat. Staff are very polite and the service is perfect! The food is always prepared quickly and tastes great every time I go!

We sit there for more than half an hour without any waiter coming. If you do not mind waiting for a long time, you can com.

The food here is authentic Chinese and it is delicious. Nothing like the majority of halal indo-chinese joints where they douse everything in chilli.

Asked for medium spice but even as a indian female who has a palette that has spice regulary..I have never seen as many red chilli ever in my life as i did in this one dish! I couldn't taste any flavour apart from the heat and there are better places near by. I would never return.

The food was amazingly good and I will eat here everyday if I can , hand made noodles are awesome . The best chinese halal food I have ever tasted .

Cannot believe you can have xinjiang food in the UK. This is proper western Chinese food, not westernised takeaway food. Recommend lamb chops and skewed lamb sticks.

We visited Karamay today after a few months off from Chinese food. The food portions, service, flavour, strength of flavour was all excellent, but they'd had a change in some of their decor and ambience, giving it the shabby look, which was minor as the food is exquisite.

Here you will find Chinese food that is different to all the typical places you have been to. Different flavours. No it's not Indo Chinese, it's nothing like that at all. But the food is so good I crave it and want to come back for more.

The first time I visited this place was two years ago and was not impressed. The second time, more recently and my feelings haven’t changed.

I visited this place with a friend based on their recommendation for a late Sunday lunch/early dinner - I am so impressed! I may be a westerner, but I'm not exactly a stranger to Oriental cuisine... but this was indeed my first experience with western chinese food.

This was my first dining experience of authentic western Chinese cuisine. I did not have any preconceptions .... but I knew it would be the opposite of the indo-Chinese takeouts I'm used to!!!

After an engaging morning at the Space Centre we we fancied some Chinese food. Not being local it was difficult to know where to go. A quick scan on trip advisor revealed this gem that most importantly was open mid afternoon when most restuarants are not yet open. It is a small restuarant making for an intimate feel and personalised service. Other diners were of Chinese descent adding to the authentic feel. We ordered some lite bites to keep us going until dinner, spring rolls and dumplings. We were disappointed that there was no sesame toast. Our 4 year old had chips as usual. We asked for flower tea and were offered something not on the menu that had a lovely fragrance unlike anything I have ever smelt and was delicious. Would have loved to have had dinner there but it was too early and it did not fit with our plans to return. Have given 4 rather 5 stars due to unavailability of sesame toast and only accepting cash but despite these minor issues this, this restuarant gets our vote.

Came here with a friend, it was a small place nicely decorated. There was a window to the kitchen where you could see the food being prepped. We could see the noodles being made fresh.

Visited here last night, first time for the very few specific Chinese restaurants in Leicester. Excellent flavour in the food. Very saucy stir fry and very well cooked food. Excellent service. Definitely worth a try.

Uighur and Chinese cuisinem so you can have kebab skewers with your crispy duck! They make their own noodles too which is very unusual, but the quality does show. Friendly staff too and a fair bit of choice on the menu.

Prohibition is alive and well and operating in Leicester's restaurants. Like several other recently opened places, Karamay has decided neither to serve alcohol nor to allow BYOB. For those who like to enjoy a glass of wine with their meal, I'd suggest looking and booking elsewhere. .

We thought that we might try Karamay after coming back home from a holiday in the Far East. We were really missing the food from abroad and we tried it with trepidation. It did not disappoint. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed the food on offer. We had fried beef with ginger and spring onions as well as sweet and sour Cantonese chicken and the hot and sour soup. The whole meal was delicious. We will definitely be coming here on a regular basis from now. Will recommend to all friends.

I love the hand-pulled noodles, I wish I could buy them as a product on their own to eat at home.

Service was amazing, waiter was very friendly. Food came without too much of a delay, and was very tasty. It really is a proper Chinese, and I'd recommend to everyone. And prices aren't too bad either.

Went to Karamay recently with my Brother on a weekend just for a meal out as we love Chinese food and being halal, decided to give this place a try after seeing several reviews and going back it on London Road. Thankfully found parking right outside which was great. Walked in and first of all as other reviewers have said seen a child running around the restaurant, not a great start. We sat down and given the menus.

The best thing is it's authentic Halal Chinese. The food is always fresh and tasty and they have great customer service along with a great variety on the menu. We visit here regularly.

We fancied a family night out but wanted something different. Karamay is a homely and family run establishment with the emphasis on speedy and efficient service. The starters were ultra quick and we were asked if we were ready for main course (nice touch). The chicken dumplings and spring rolls were excellent and when we asked for something different in chicken they suggested crispy chicken which you make up yourself in a thin roll (tasty). Overall very welcoming staff and worth going here as it's also HMC registered.

I visited with a friend and we chose this place wanting to try something different, what a big mistake that was! The food was cold and lacking in flavour, the prices were steep for what was on offer. There weren't any accompaniments with the food included in the price. The black bean chicken was served on a plate on its own. It would cost an extra £6.50 for any additional noodles or rice with the dish. The prices should reflect the dish. In an Indian restaurant the sides would be £3.50 max, as it is a side not a main. You cannot eat noodles on its own! This place is ludicrous and in future when visiting Leicester I shall choose from the vast array of restaurants on offer on London Rd.

A pearl of a small place. Delicious food. Very efficient service and affordable pricing. Well worth the visit. I for one will visit again.

So Uighur is the western part of China where culture is quite different and more central Asian. The food was delicious with pilaf, kebab options. The usual sweet and sour, lemon chicken, noodles were fantastic too. Clean, family run, visible kitchen area. Lovely setup. Quite small so book to avoid disappointment.

Thoroughly enjoyed what we ordered but having seen other people's loaded tables, we realised we could have been far more adventurous. The dumpling starters were beautifully cooked and the sauce was really tasty.

Food was amazing, service was good, recommended visit. Husband loved the crispy duck. Going back soon iA

A great halal chinese place in leicester. The food was extremely good especially the skewers we got for the starter. First time I've tried crispy duck and it was amazing, definitely will be going here again.

This is Ughur food from Western China where the main population is Muslim ethnic Ughur. Ordered two main traditional dishes with a friend at lunchtime and the lamb kebab in skewers for starters. Everything was very good and the skewers delicious. There is a good variety of chinese you would expect but try their specials for something different. Small but homely and staff and owners are so nice. HMC certificate in the window so everything halal. I would highly recommend.

Really tasty food and reasonably priced. I normally find Chinese restaurants to be very samey with thick, gloopy sauces. The tastes here were clean and fresh. Would definitely recommend this place.

5 stars are for how fresh and clean the food was compared to most chinese places who serve very dirty meat. ran by a chinese family and the food is authentic and tasty. quite cheap as well. very filling. service a bit slow.

We visited this family run business , generally we eat chinese only at yum sing in Oadby , knowing this Resturant is authorized by HMC meant a lot to me .

From the onset, the restaurant looked nicely decorated and clean. It was nearly full but luckily I managed to get a table without booking. There was 5 of us dining. From the point we were given the menu, the service was non existent! We constantly had to call staff members over to take our order. One of the staff member, I believe she was the manager, was quite rude. Every time we asked her a question about the menu, she was quite patronizing and expected us to know everything already. One of my guests did not see the halal sign, so he asked her if the food is halal. She responded by saying "well, obviously". Sorry but this is not acceptable. The food was also coming in dribs and drabs. I expected all the starters to come at once and then all the mains, but this wasn't the case. Also, we were not provided with cutlery. So every time a new dish came, we had to ask for cutlery. These are the basics that shouldn't need to be chased up by the customer!.
