Shoulder of mutton, foxton in Leicester

Spoilt by dogs wandering round the pub and coming under our table.

Do NOT be put off by the rather bright, almost cafe-like interior, this obviously very community focussed pub has a very welcoming landlord and staff, great beer, and food that massively surpassed expectations. We just had normal pub food, but the steak and ale pie was one of the best I've had, and the ham egg and chips was definitely the best ever!

Since changing back to the Shoulder the pub has become amazing! Lovely Sunday roasts, American theme was great, basket meal also same standard and the board meals are fresh and interesting. They also do Guinness Zero 😀

Had a sandwich here on sunday lunchtime. Service was slow, however, I guess it was because of the time we visited. I ordered thick cut wholemeal bread and received white sliced. Food was ok.

Very friendly welcome, food was great. We ate from the rural lunch menu. Quick service. Spotlessly clean. Would definitely visit again.

We stopped at Foxton on our narrowboat and decided to try the Shoulder of Mutton on this visit having previously tried other establishments in the area. Very friendly welcome, great food at an excellent price. We visited on a Saturday lunchtime and had food from the rural lunch menu. The food was a very high standard, not sure how they do it for the price. Have been to many places where the food is twice the price, but only half as good. Will certainly be visiting again when we are in the area.

Came here as part of a group reunion (now known as the "Sheffield Ramblers" but are from all over the UK) and the pub was very accommodating - put orders in advance and then paid by separate bills so save someone collecting cash and then paying in one sum - the food was freshly cooked and hot and very tasty and prices were reasonable service was excellent

Warned when ordering that 40min delay. We accepted that and waited on outside patio marked "No Smoking" Much smoking by regulars. Waiters - all very pleasant and jovial returned on three occasions saying requested item no longer available. After 2 hours we accepted 3 meals amongst party of four. The food itself was good but at such a late hour our enjoyment was neutralised. We would never return.

Great food and service at a very reasonable price! They do a steak night on Wednesday for Two steaks and a bottle of wine or two beers for £32, and the steaks are perfectly cooked.

We visited the property 3 times, the quality of the food and portion sizes were excellent. The staff were very attentive and very helpful-all with a lovely drive. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Wednesday lunch was excellent. Mushroom soup to start followed by vegetable and stilton pie in puff pastry with a good selection of vegetables served in a separate dish. The plates were hot which I always like. The service was attentive with very pleasant staff. I will be going back for more.

The rooms are comfortable Lin couldn't do enough for you very friendly even had a loan of a wheelchair for my partner. Room spotlessly clean would highly recommend

Great Service, Great quality home cooked Food and a Crackin selection of well kept real ales, all at reasonable prices, made feel very welcome by landlord/landlady and the locals. I Had been reccomend this pub as they allow you to park up your campervan or motorhome for free as long as you eat n drink, A Crackin find. Ideal after a trip to see & walk around Foxton Canal & Locks. Reccomend call first to book as limited opening hours. We were recommended this beautiful rural pub by another pub near the football grounds of Harborough FC. We're so glad we visited! The pub is down a no-through road in the village, theres a beautifully designed covered outdoor area with a bbq and further up to the left on a raised area is a beautiful landscaped grass area with picnic tables and umbrellas. Inside, it's elegant yet cozy, a warm vibe in here, the staff are exceptionally friendly and professional and the locals were just as lovely too. We had a great conversation with two locals who are knowledgeable about the surrounding area and very well travelled too, they really made our vist a bit more special, thank you ! The food is excellent quality and tasty, I had the Lasagne (creamy, comforting, lovely flavours) and my man had the Steak Pie (lots of meat and the vegetables were just right). The Summer Pudding was superb, lots of berries, moist bread, and served with a delicious coulis. We are West Ham fans and there are two tvs in the pub - one in the main area, with 4 tables that side, the other tv is in a lovely snug area, with 2/3 tables. Neither TV is in-your-face, the quality of picture was excellent and the noise was very low which we prefer and didn't intrude into conversations. My partner found a dart board in the snug and we had fun playing darts badly 😅 We also found board games too, which I thought was a lovely touch. I truly recommend this rural gem 🤩

Stayed overnight, great food and and lovely friendly service. Haddock Smokies were outstanding! All 3 meals were excellent and quick service, although the pub was very busy. Would recommend booking in advance, especially for Sunday lunch. So nice to see a pub where dogs are welcome, even overnight.

Really nice place to spend the night. Husband was cycling the Leicestershire Round, and I was meeting him halfway with doggy. Perfectly placed, quiet room with outside area for our spaniel, excellent breakfast in the morning and lovely gardens in front to watch the sun set. Friendly service - highly recommend!

Four of us popped into for lunch whilst visiting Foxton Locks. What a great place, food was fantastic and plenty of it. All the staff were very friendly and attentive especially the young lady whose first day at work there it was today. Highly recommended, could not fault anything

Only had a drink after work but it's a great place. Had food other times and that's 👌🏻

Stayed here on a Monday evening as I was in the area for a business meeting. A very warm welcome from the proprietors, Mike & Lin, was followed up by a hearty evening meal (a good vegetarian option, to boot!). The room was clean, comfortable & well-appointed. I was served a lovely cooked breakfast the next morning, and left feeling I’d gladly return the next time in staying in the area.

Such a fabulous place where we enjoyed a superb meal, which was tasty, well presented and perfect portion size. The indoor and outdoor spaces were lovely and the staff very welcoming and helpful. We'll definitely visit again 🙂.

Great place to find on a sunny Day

8 of us for Father's day lunch. It was very busy yet the service was friendly and timely. We had a variety of main meals including vegetarian. Just wow,! Delicious and the portion sizes were amazing. Very good value. We will certainly come again. Thanks for the friendly welcome and service.

Visited on a Monday evening. Menu selection small but interesting. Atmosphere friendly and warm. Beer selection very good. Our food order arrived quickly. The cooking and presentation was amazing. We had the lasagna and chicken curry. Desserts were equally digital. Both dishes were absolutely amazing and tasted great. Best meal so far on a 2 week canal cruise.

We have had a lovely first experience today. Walked from our narrowboat to sit in good weather in the garden of the Shoulder of Mutton. The cod and lamb dishes beautifully presented and delicious. Unfortunately I chose the liver and bacon casserole it was very tasty but the liver was well over cooked and was asleep hard as bullets, needed a magnifying glass to find the bacon and the chef needs to look how to make a peach Melba h

All the staff were extremely polite and provided excellent information about all the facilities in planning for our daughters wedding.

We had a lovely one-night stay in May. The landlady and staff were all so kind and helpful. The lasagne for dinner was perfect! The room is pretty, great shower and has everything you need.

We were on a boat at Foxton Locks and walked here for an evening meal. How surprised were we when it was Steak Night: 2 beautifully cooked steaks, flat mushroom, steak tomato and triple cooked chips with a bottle of wine £30!!! We asked for the coleslaw side so paid £32.45 altogether (not each). This place comes highly recommended by me.

This place was recommended by a chap in the village after I worked on his Motorhome today. We live just down the road from Foxton and we do have regular places we eat, but I fancied a change today. It's always a bit of a worry trying out a new eatery, but this place didn't disappoint. I had the gammon and my wife had the Salmon. Both meals were absolutely delightful. The staff were fantastic and the whole meal was extremely good value. We will definitely be back.

We were a party of six and all found suitable options on the lunch menu. Not fine dining but ideal location and food choices while catching up with friends. Very good value for money.

The themed food nights are especially good! Always a great pint of ale as well. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Dog friendly and always something going on, feels like the heart of the community. Parking can be a bit random but never not found a space, I find the décor and layout a little odd for a country pub. It's one of the best in the area I think.

It's a stay away for a night near Uppingham, Leicester. The bed sheets have come somewhere out of the 70s but the shower is amazing. You could have a party in there.

Visited today with friends first time for many years so pleased to see what is like now Couldn’t fault our rural lunch the quality and quantity were superb as was the service and nothing was too much trouble for the staff Excellent value would definitely recommend

The Inn is amazing. Great people. Owners and staff are amazing. You feel like you are having tea with family. The food is brilliant. Very flavourful and loads of chips. The restaurant is always busy. There are weekly specials as well. The rooms are comfy and feel like home. There is a kettle, blow dryer, little refrigerator and TV. Coffee and tea are also in the room. Towels are very fluffy and comforter very warm and snuggled. The pub is busy and has a front garden with benches to sit at. Great in summer. The inn is a 20 min walk along the canal to Foxton Locks. Beautiful stroll and the locks are well maintained. The pub/inn is off the main road with a large car park which get very busy when there are food specials on. Make sure to check out Shoulder of Mutton, Foxton. You won’t be disappointed.

On arrival bar person was a little abrupt Told we were early and table wasn't ready Which we did expected as we wanted to have a drink before We got our table on time ordered drinks and food at same time Food arrived still waiting for drinks we were offered no condiments one small bowl of cauliflower cheese between 4 the same as a table of 2 got very little gravy ask when plates arrived for extra gravy and where our drinks were AGAIN Meat wasn't great three extremely thin slices Still waiting for drinks and gravy. Went to bar to inquire about our 35min wait for drinks Gravy came when most of us had virtually finished Drinks arrived We were offered no dessert or coffee or any more drinks 2 young boys serving us where very pleasant However we felt they had direction or support

Visited at lunchtime and chose a 3 course meal from their rural lunch menu. The food was excellent, beautifully cooked, piping hot and very good value for money. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent. A rural gem! We shall return.

Absolutely outstanding food! Every meal within our party of six was delicious. I would highly recommend. The staff and chef were very accomodating towards our children and we look forward to trying other meals from the menu.

After a lovely Sunday roast at this venue, we spotted the menu for a 5 course Gourmet Seafood Banquet on the 29th Feb for £39.95pp. Of course, we booked it immediately! On the 29th we arrived to a beautifully laid out dining area, the service was faultless and then the food started. Every course was an absolute success, totally delicious, good portions, and we even managed a pudding. It was one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The team were amazing and the Chef made an appearance to a round of applause from all diners. Can't wait for the next time I get to eat out at this lovely place.

Hadn’t been here for a long while but a friend recommended it. We had four different meals in the stylish dining area and all were excellent. Personable staff excellent beer and football showing in the bar area for the locals. Well worth a visit. We shall return.

This place is lovely. It’s really friendly. The staff / owners are warm and funny. The service is great. The food is good and big and the puddings are lush. Garden looks nice for the summer but it was chilly today. Thank you for a lovely meal.

I stayed here with my son for one night. Very nice twin room with a huge shower room! We spent the afternoon watching the rugby and felt really welcome in a busy bar full of locals. The highlight was definitely the food! Absolutely beautiful. All very reasonably priced and if I’m ever back around Leicester way I’ll stop here.

Went here on Saturday night with my girlfriend and her family. The best service I’ve had in an English country pub for years. Made for such a wonderful evening. The food was absolutely fantastic too. Thoroughly recommended!

We just attended a Burns Supper at the Shoulder of Mutton and have to say that they put on a great night indeed. Four course meal was excellent and the portions were huge. Staff were friendly and all of the tables were served promptly with food that was piping hot. Even our request for extra potatoes and vegetables was dealt with without any hesitation which has not been our experience at other restaurants recently. Overall we were very impressed with both the venue and the food.

Right from booking our room to stay and table for dinner to meet family, through to our arrival & check in, evening meal, overnight stay and breakfast, Mike and Lin, Phil the Chef and ALL other other staff were nothing but courteous, polite and so helpful. Our room was perfect for our needs (ground floor, walk-in shower and dog-friendly) and was clean and comfortable. We met family for an evening meal which was jusgt delicious!!! Very generous portions and attentive but not over-bearing staff. We all had different things ranging from Cullen Skink, Pate, Gammon & Chips, Beef & Ale Pie, Curry to the lovely desserts of Ice Cream Sorbet, Lemon Cake and Crumble!!! Everything about our stay was perfect. Breakfast (by Mike) on the Sunday morning was a delight - a beautifully cooked Full English, nice coffee and toast as well as the juices/cereals. Highly recommend for a stay, or a meal, or like us - both!!! Thanks Mike & Lin (and all staff).

This meal at the Shoulder of Mutton pub was to celebrate friendship. So an important occasion required a feast of a meal and that it was. Three of us we each ate a different plate ; faggots,lamb stew and salmon with sides of fresh vegetables and chips. Each dish was delicately prepared and all were delicious. The service was good. Homely atmosphere and a very affordable bill at the end. Will certainly return.

We popped in after mooring our hired narrow boat up near the swing bridge. Unfortunately no food Monday but the locals gave me a couple of restaurant suggestions we had food delivered to the pub! The owners even offered plates and cutlery when the food arrived, just brilliant. Thanks

Fantastic Sunday lunch with the family as always at this place. Mike and Lynn are superb hosts and the food is amazing. Three trios of meat, one beef and one lamb dinner ordered. Vegetables were well cooked, cauliflower cheese was top drawer and the roast potatoes and Yorkshire’s were almost as good as mine. Thanks guys, keep up the great work

What a rare gem, we were recommended to visit this restaurant after arriving at our canal boat hire. After a walk alongside the canal in the pitch black we followed the map to the shoulder of mutton. Straight away we were greeted with a warm welcome and sat down to a bottle of what turned out to be one our favourite reds, the staff were amazing! They were very accommodating and friendly and the food was perfect. Cozy little restaurant, awesome staff, great food; What more could you ask for

This wonderful pub has only reopened less than a year after a few years in the wilderness but it really is superb. We were staying in the Village for a family get together and on arriving on a Friday evening after a long journey from Devon thought a visit for dinner would be OK. The welcome was warm, the locals were friendly, the food plentiful and top quality for very reasonable price, plus Husband raved about how good the pints of Timothy Taylor were! So today when some family were heading home after a busy weekend, we decided to treat them to dinner for us it meant a return on what we thought would be a quiet Tuesday early doors. At 5.30pm the pub was buzzing with locals catching up on the news of the day. The Timothy Taylor was still as wonderful and a wonderful meal for four was enjoyed. I wish we lived locally still, so if you’re in the area, so see for yourself. This is a great pub (with rooms) great atmosphere and fab food!

Lovely find with great food and a genial host and staff. We parked our motor home in the carpark overnight which was free as we ate there. Heartily recommended. Dog friendly too. We will be back!

Had a real problem trying to select from the menu, changed my mind several times as it all sounded great - and it was! Lovely meals and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend and we will visit again.

The meal was delicious …. meat was tender and the gravy ….well! that was just to die for! The four of us …from salmon, lamb and the steak and ale pie agreed that the pub now is at the top of our list! The staff were so friendly and the chef too….wish he would write a book of his recipes! We have just spent a night here. We arrived about an hour before the pub quiz took place. We were given a very warm welcome and the place had a great friendly atmosphere. We had dinner which was delicious and did the quiz…not very well! Very comfortable room with lovely shower and lots of hot water. Will definitely return if we are in the area again and would highly recommend. Very good value

We stayed here for night on our way to pick up a new dog. It’s high rating was well deserved. We were greeted warmly and the accommodation suited our needs. Great location, near the canal for lovely walks. We had dinner in the pub - I have the curry which was absolutely delicious. Breakfast was delicious too, freshly cooked to order by our friendly host. Highly recommended.

My wife and I, accompanied by some friends (whose initiative this was), spent a very pleasant lunch at this very impressive pub. The bar staff were extremely welcoming, as was the host. We ate in the garden, given the excellent weather, and the food, which was very well presented, came promptly and was delicious. It is a place that we would happily revisit, if we didn't live in France.

Clean and comfortable rooms, had a great nights sleep, peaceful rooms behind the pub didn’t hear anything! Large car park suitable for vans and all staff are lovely. The food is really nice and reasonably priced. Will definitely be coming back if working in the area! A new favourite :)

We don’t usually leave reviews but having just stayed at the Shoulder of Mutton for the second time, we just can’t help ourselves. The Shoulder excels in all areas - beautiful location, great food and drinks, comfortable rooms, great staff and the most dog friendly place we have ever stayed at. We have just got back from Sunday lunch at the Shoulder of Mutton. The roast beef and homemade vegetable pie were both amazing. It's a beautiful pub with very friendly, welcoming staff. It's so nice to go out for Sunday lunch somewhere that is so well managed with such friendly staff. This pub is definitely worth a visit.

We were made to feel welcome and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Lovely food and a good selection of ale at sensible prices. For a Tuesday early evening the pub was buzzing. The Foxton locals are lucky to have a pub like this.

Very nicely refurbished. Bar area, informal seating area for drinks ir food and a very smart restaurant seating area. The garden is lovely with plenty of outdoor seating. We went on a Friday evening which, as well as the normal menu, one of the specials is fish delivered from Grimsby. We had the fish which was almost a whale! We had it with chips and mushy peas. The chips were perfect. All freshly cooked. Can't fault it. Superb service and the staff were lovely. We'll definitely be back.

We called here without booking for a Saturday evening meal and were very impressed with the standard of freshly home cooked food, very adequate portions, fresh cooked vegetables, helpful staff, and reasonable prices. The local lager is to be highly recommended too. We'll certainly be back!
