My wife and I walked past Yijo a couple of months back but it was closed for refurb. We fancied some food and walked into the reopened restaurant on a whim and were absolutely blown away by it. We thought the food was really good value and the service excellent. Our waiter was friendly and engaging but also discreet - not overbearing at all but really knowledgeable and passionate about the food he was serving. We'll be back with friends soon! Have not been there for quite some time and am wondering if it has changed hands?? 4 of us went...and started with mixed Kimchi...no kick to it..and waiter not very helpful "That is how we do it". Ordered 2 portions of seafood hotpot...tasty enough but had crab and razor clams etc...but when we asked for the appropriate instruments for cracking the shells..."sorry,not available", so we had to use fingers...and no fingerbowls supplied until we complained. 2 portions of Yuk Hoe came straight out of a fridge or freezer!! Finally a Raw beef Bibimbap just was nowhere near how it should have been. This is NOT how I remembered this venue...the question is why????

I've been waiting for YIJO to reopen, after its previous owner disappeared rather suddenly ! I called many times, but the number was always engaged, so I went to the restaurant to find out why and it transpires that the new owner hasn't yet mastered our language very well, so I assume that is the reason they leave the phone off the hook !The new owner - Jay - is charming and very helpful. I booked a table for the Foodie Group and was welcomed there today - by name - by the beaming owner. There is a small, but delicious lunch menu, for the princely sum of £6.99, for which five of us indulged in the amazing Bibimbap with Beef Bulgoghi and the others had Bulgoghi with rice. We had complementary pickles and miso soup and all of us thoroughly enjoyed it and swore to return very soon. While I was waiting for the others to arrive, I browsed through their a la carte menu, with the intention of returning one evening.... The menu is comprehensive and reasonable and I'm sure we will have a great return !!!

Last year, my Foodie Group went to Yijo and unfortunately had a waitress who was working their for the first time...She was beautiful and friendly, but also useless, so my review was not fulsome, to say the least !However, I decided to give the restaurant another chance and booked a table for 8 people for lunch today. They seemed quite surprised to see us and obviously had no record of our booking, but quickly agreed to put two oblong tables together to make a "round square" (!!), and brought us iced tap water and a selection of pickled vegetables as a complimentary taster while we waited for our orders.I ordered the Bibimbap with beef short ribs, which we delicious, The waiter advised against a starter as the dish is quite substantial. The others, however, order tempura king prawns, seaweed, sweet potato croquettes to start and then a variety of broths and stir fries to follow. All of the dishes were excellent...and the waiter even agreed to bill us separately, which absolved me from complicated mathematics ! We will definitely return here...even though they no longer have the special lunch menu, the prices were reasonable and the food really good.

Korean in finchley central 4*This restaurant had a very polite service. The food was quick to come out and was indeed very tasty. We ordered the kimchi pancake, jaeyuk bokkum, kimchi and dwen jang chigae (soya bean soup), all of which we have ordered various times before in other Korean restaurants and also in Korea. We didn't need to make a reservation, but we were possibly lucky on the day, considering it was a Saturday evening. The restaurant is kitted out with tables where you can have Korean bbq including extractor fan on top. Location is great for those who travel via tube as it is VERY close to finchley central station. Bear in mind that if you drive, it may be difficult to find parking space. The only reason that I didn't award 5 *s is because of the strange concept of their loyalty card system. You can only recieve stamps on your card if you pay by cash, which was a shame as we spent quite a lot of money there (by card) and would have loved to have been rewarded if we were to come a few times!

booked table for 5 friends. When we arrived it was fairly busy although by no means full. Took us nearly ten minutes before we were even seated by anyone and then... that was about it!. Not one person came to our table to even say hello let alone offer us a beer while we waited for our order to be taken. We regularly politely mentioned to the one member of floor staff that we would like at least a drink to which he would hurriedly reply "just a moment" and then go back to whatever it was he was doing (which none of us could really figure out). So after sitting there for a further 20 mins or so, we left and found a similar eatery a couple of miles away in Golders Green which was fantastic. The restaurant itself and the food looked pretty good. I won't rush back here though, simply due to the service but perhaps if I'm going by and it doesn't look too busy i may consider trying again. I can't entirely blame the poor lad on the floor as he was obviously struggling but i would urge the management to ensure they have the appropriate staff on a particular night to ensure they maintain their business. Who knows perhaps we were just unlucky and picked a bad night. Shame.

This is a long established Korean restaurant located pretty much opposite the Station Road entrance to Finchley Central tube station. Got a make over a few years back which made it much more inviting and less formal. Been three times and always enjoyed the food. The BBQ sets are fantastic and a great dining experience, you get hot coals in the centre of the table and a whole range of items to cook on it. An assortment of pickles, sauces and vegetables come with them. Restaurant has a nice relaxed atmosphere, serve decent Korean cocktails too. Service can be a let down at times and they seem to struggle when busy. I've had orders forgotten and had to wait ages for drinks. Toilets desperately need to be improved too. I took my Foodie Group to this restaurant for lunch. I had previously had food delivered and wanted to compare it with dining in the restaurant.Unfortunately, only one waitress was on duty ...and it was her first day ! As relative newcomers to Korean food, we asked her advice, which she was happy to impart, but not very successfully. One of our group had seen a party on a previous visit have the barbecue, so we ordered three different ones - lamb, tongue and duck, together with a Bimbimbap, which is a variety of vegetables, rice and beef, on which a raw egg is mixed in and cooks as you stir it in. The lamb was cut so thin that it shrivelled up to nothing as soon as it hit the hot barbecue; the tongue was a little better....and the duck had been given away to another table! We had to search for the beef in the Bimbimbap, but it WAS very tasty. We then ordered two stir-fried dishes, as we were still very hungry ..only one of which arrived...the other one arrived as a soup! The pretty waitress was really apologetic for her slip-ups and was so pretty and sweet that we forgave her, but we were all disappointed with our meal. If we go again, I think we would avoid the barbecue and try some of the other dishes.

We came into this restaurant based on the delicious smell of the barbecue. Most of the people there were similar - almost everyone there had ordered the barbecue.Unfortunately, our barbecue did not work. We were cooking our food for over 20 minutes wondering why the heat output was so poor. We ended up having to call the staff over - we had 3 changes of barbecue coals before one of the staff members said that the barbecue was broken and they'd just cook it in the kitchen for us. It all ended up slightly disappointing, I think the food suffered from the initial maltreatment over weak coals. Another one of the tables near us had a similar experience with barely any heat output. The staff seemed poorly trained and unaware of these issues with the barbecue in general - taking lots of people to come before we were told it wasn't working (and if they knew the table wasn't working then they should have let us know before ordering). This was a pity. I think the tables at the front which have the proper smoke extraction probably have better barbecues than the tables at the back - the people there were cooking their food rapidly and happily. When we complained, they only offered to remove the service charge. I was very disappointed. This place could be very good. The beef dolsot bibimbab was actually very good and people with working barbecues seemed happy. Staff were well meaning but seemed undertrained. With a bit of work this place could be very good.

Korean food is a bit of an acquired taste. It's not Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese - it's Korean with it's own special flavour. I spent many years visiting Korea on business and absolutely love the food. There is a lot of hot spices involved, so if you are at all worried about that, skip the starters - especially the Kimche - which is staple food in Korea. It's fermented cabbage and supposed to be fermented in pots over seven years in the earth. Well, maybe many years ago!! If you are quite OK with spicy food or curious, then go for the starters. The Korean BBQ itself is cooked on a hot stove in front of you and is great fun for, say, four people. I could go for this every day, but then, that's me!! The best Korean restaurant, and certainly the oldest in London is the Ariyang on Poland Street and at one time was superb. However, I had lunch there a couple of years ago with my sons, who both love spicy food and it had gone off to such an extent, it was a disaster. Yijo has renewed my faith in Korean food in London. It is right opposite Finchley Central Station so quite accesible. Four of us went and had great fun. Highly recommended.

Very busy as usual, but we went at about 9 so were able to get a table without booking. Waitress was helpful and put us off ordering too much food (unusual as people often encourage you to spend more!). Lovely sides that come with your BBQ and the food was really good. I'd like to explore more of the menu as some of the dishes coming from the kitchen looked really nice, but couldn't resist the BBQ experience. Loses 1 point for the loos - quite basic and could do with an update (cosmetic only, very clean), but understandable that it's a new business (with these owners) and perhaps are seeing how the investment goes. Would recommend a visit. Spent about £80 for two, but we're very greedy (starters, double mains wine...) and you could certainly eat well for less!

It might be Zone 4 - but it's worth the tube ride. The interactivity with the BBQ in the middle of your table will never make for a dull night out with friends. While you can't really judge them on the main parts of the food - given you cook it yourself - the sides could've been stronger and perhaps larger in portion. The pork belly and the beef were definite BBQ winners and the sizzling plate a few tables over look fab. I wouldn't recommend ordering the prawns - while they look large, once you de-shell them there is barely any meat for the price you pay and they take a LOT longer to cook on the BBQ than your fellow diners, make your meal quite disjointed.Overall - a fun way to eat!

Visited this restaurant with 7 other friends this weekend to experience my first taste of Korean cuisine. I have to say that the food was extremely tasty, varied and somewhat pleasantly different to Chinese, Thai and other Asian dishes. The BBQ concept made the difference, although personally would probably have preferred to have my food cooked for me. It was very reasonably priced however there was a slightly bad taste left in my mouth when going to pay? A customer loyalty card was left of our table together with our bill (one that requires you to get a stamp each time you visit) Ours was not stamped and when I inquired as to why not, I was told that credit card payers do not receive a stamp.A real marketing error on the restaurants part and one that has backfired to what should be a good and positive concept. Such a small thing that makes a big difference and the impression it leaves? If the restaurant knew we were paying by card, then why leave the loyalty card on our table? The next time my taste buds crave some Korean food (which wont be too long) will probably out of principal, look elsewhereHowever, if you want to pay cash - a good choice

While our KimChi pancakes were raw. and our charcoal was not as hot as it should have been for Korean barbecue, this place offers tasty authentic food, good service and great atmosphere.Be ready to send your clothes for dry cleaning after a meal at this place, but that is what you would expect, unless you are happy with electric grill.

Delicious Korean BBQ, friendly service. My wife and myself have not eaten so good BBQ since our last trip to South Korea. The service is fast (been there at a Sunday lunch) and friendly. They have original Korean imported wine. I advise a perdect mix: Bek Se Ju with BBQ mix !

Some of the food was great, especially the soup which was amazing and could feed about 10 people. And it should do for £30!!I did feel that some of the food was tasteless and was disappointed in some of the dishes. The strangest thing was that we had the BBQ which mixed raw beef and chicken with one set of tongs. I was very unhappy with this and could not see how it could be allowed with customers who may have no idea re hygiene!!My advice would be try it! But ideally go with someone who has been before and knows which dishes to go for!! BEST IN BIG GROUPS!!!!

I spent a year teaching in Korea and so often get cravings for real Korean cuisine. Korean bbq has always been a favourite of mine, but it's often hard to come by. Yijo provided a truly authentic Korean bbq experience. The food was fantastic and extremely affordable. The staff were courteous and efficient. I couldn't have asked for a better vibe. Highly recommend!

Group of 7 with 2 children. Service was incredibly slow with disengaged members of staff. Took them 20 mins to clear a table and seat us. Then another 20 mins before they took our orders. Starters were nice esp the kimchi jeon but it went downhill from there. We ordered 4 bimipaps two of which were cold even though they should be sizzling in their pots so we had to send them back plus I had to go to the bar and pick up the accompanying sauces myself. Salmon sashimi was totally unfresh and it took them an hour before I was served a side dish of kimchi. Unfortunately I won't be returning to the resturant or recommending the restaurant to any of my friends. Disappointing visit

Not one to write negative things but felt annoyed and angry from the brief experience I had with Yijo. This experience is NOT based on the food but only the service. We booked a table for four people a week in advance and I specifically asked for a bright table as one of our party has difficulty in seeing. When we got there, there was no one to seat us and had to wait, furthermore we was giving a very dim table when there were brighter tables else where in the restaurant. Once seated the restaurant was very muggy and warm. No air-con was on even though they had one, with only the door open (London was around 30 degree's that day and around 25-26 in the evening). We had to wait another 20 minutes before I went to the bar to ask for drinks and by this time I was fed up and left. I'd like to state that from what I saw there were 3 waiters behind the bar all doing something but not on the restaurant floor. The restaurant wasn't busy and there was only 7 tables including ourselves. I think it's quite reasonable to ask the the three waiters to manage 7 tables? They were mostly 2 people per one. Terrible atmosphere and vibe.

Good Korean restaurant in north London. Nothing special from outside but inside is a good enough size with good service. Quality of the food was good and good enough portion. They were near authentic Korean food and we really enjoyed it. The restaurant itself looks very ordinary.

I had previous written a review for Yijo Korean BBQ & I gave them 4 stars. However, I revisited this place in April and unfortunately, I'm now reducing them to 3 stars. The quality of food hasn't changed much, i.e. their star menu - BBQ food was still delicious; They still unable to cook the "stone rice" properly (its too wet); But their services quality have improved. Unfortunately, their prices had hugely increased & that's why I think I need to give them another review:They changed the menu and put the prices up on almost everything. When I visited in Sep14, it cost £45 for 2 people but on my revisited in April, it cost over £70, we ordered exactly the same thing as before, we just added one portion of prawns (£8.50) & one ice cream (2 people sharing). One of the biggest increases was their BBQ set which they increased the price from £22 to £26. The portion of food had also reduced as well. (see attached pictures) Another obvious increase was their service charge: which they charged 12.5% to its customer and I think the owner is being too greedy & ridiculous! There is no way that they can charge 12.5% at a "DIY" style restaurant at Finchley Central station! Other examples are: 5 pieces of medium size prawns cost £8.50, 2 "harder than stone" Mochi ice cream sold at £3.90 (which cost less than 40p at Korean supermarket)I originally preferred this Korean restaurant than the one at Golders Green, due to its more value for money menu. But then now they increased the price, so I will go back to the one at Golders Green as their overall quality of food is actually better!

It's rare one encounters people so passionate about their food culture that are also able to deliver an end product that is fantastic. This gem is tucked away a very short distance from Finchley Central underground station, half a dozen stops from Camden town on the Northern line. (Do not make the mistake of going to east Finchley !). A modest restaurant but with the right philosophy ! I must confess I am one of those sad people who will travel miles for a good meal and my visit did not disappoint. Booking is essential (primarily because they BBQ on real charcoal which they need to fire up for you in advance - very authentic and not easy to find). Saturday night is packed, but mid week or lunch time, you'll get their full, undivided attention. Going in a larger party might ensure you all get to try their amazing dishes (BBQ is for a minimum of 2 people). However if there are 2 of you, just go (I'd go on my own tomorrow !). Pork is sourced from the same suppliers used by top restaurants in Seoul. They also do Kimchi & Tofu making classes. Enjoy.

We were happy to have found a Korean restaurant in London. There were a lot of great feedback about his restaurant so gave it a go.The food was great especially the kimchi fried rice and the gyoza. Love the BBQ as well and all that came with it, authentic Korean taste. We also tried the mochi ice cream balls and they were lovely. They have a Korean Chef which I think makes a big difference than those restaurant in the city who claims to be a Korean restaurant but the chefs are actually Chinese. Cant fault the food but the service left a bitter taste in my mouth. We were sat at the far end of the restaurant which we actually liked because it was quiet and cozy. But nobody told us that that was the most neglected table in the whole restaurant. It took them 20 mins to get our order to think we were just 5 steps away from the cashier's counter. The owner was apologetic due to being short of staff that day so shook it off... 20 mins later... no food... another 20 mins.... no food... we followed up... then another couple arrived just opposite to us (the girl was Korean and the guy was English) the Chef was on their table in a flash, took their order, drinks served all in 5 mins... another 10 mins later their food arrived!!! So then we followed up again, the Chef just nodded and head back to the kitchen... our food came out after only after 1 hour. The other table had finished their feast and we were just starting to eat to think we only ordered BBQ, gyoza and kimchi fried rice. The other table had noodles, rice sticks, bbq, soup, and some stir fried veg.Although the food was great, we felt ignored, I actually lost my appetite after seing the other table got all their orders in less than 20 mins and we saw them order from the menu. And to think that our main order was BBQ and they are served raw to grill, it does not make any sense to me at all that it took them an hour to wash the lettuce and slice the pork because for all we know they were all prepped for the day. The restaurant was not even busy when we arrived. My husband told the owner about our experience but she only gave us the same reason. She gave us a loyalty card but Im not sure if we are ever coming back. Customers come to your restaurant to eat and spend money so dont ignore them.

It is a hike to get to from Central London, but worth every minute exquisitely good Korean food cooked old school on table charcoal barbecues. The place is comfortable and friendly, the food immaculately fresh and beautifully presented. I used to go to a very good Korean near Highbury Corner,the"Busan"..which vanished with no forwarding address! Eventually a friend suggested the "Yijo"....and I now again have an eatery that does proper Yuk Hoe ! ( Look it up on Google!). This place is a Korean Barbecue restaurant that does an extensive menu of basic Korean and does it well....at least as well as some of the much more expensive Central London establishments. Service very good. If you are not familiar with this style of food, this is a good place to start,

Worth traveling from Nottinghill ti this place for Yijo. It is a small restaurant with modest setting a la Korean BBQ. Service is efficient and excellent. The food are authentic Korean. Usually whether the chef is real Korean or not can be identified by Kimchijigae , cabbage kimchi soup with spicy hot sauce. The BBQ are all tasty: try their bulkalbi,'and ox tonge , pork belly. Price is fair.

I found the food in this restaurant bland. The individual items were fresh, but not interesting. I had the barbecue, which was a nice experience in itself, but not something to remember, the bibimbap, which was a bit tasteless, and the dumplings, which again were nice-ish but nothing to remember. The waiter was very nice, but the restaurant looks tired, and at least the female toilet could have done with a working flushing toilet. So not a bad experience, but not a good either, we won't go back.

I only live several mins drive away so feel this is quite a nice local Korean place. There's free single yellow line parking right outside restaurant in evenings. Will come again.

Disgraceful, rude + Unprofessional service. Actually still in shock seeing as I’ve spent thousands here & was a loyal customer. They serve MICRO ribs the size of your little finger (see pictures) and I complained and they screamed at me (chef included). Then they said I should order something other than the ribs. THEN when I insisted on my complaint they refused to serve me ribs again. Unbelievable.

For lovers of Indonesian cuisine, New Jakarta is a hidden gem in London. Located on Sheaveshill Avenue, this restaurant offers a variety of typical Indonesian dishes that offer many choices. I visited this restaurant twice. When visiting, apart from the satisfying food, the service here is very friendly. The staff are warm and ready to help explain the menu for those new to Indonesian cuisine. The atmosphere is simple, but comfortable, perfect for a casual lunch or dinner with friends.
