Bali Satay House in Barnet

Very tasty food let down by appalling, slow service. It was busy in the restaurant but other tables seem to be getting served quicker than us. We had chicken satay (6 skewers) and chicken dumplings (2 dumplings) for starters, these were good but took almost an hour to arrive. The main courses took another 30 minutes. The slow cooked chicken was delicious, and a very large portion (2 drumsticks, 2 thighs), as was the chicken betutu. Be wary of the allergen listings, a lot of the vegan dishes have the crustacean sign next to them.

Genuinely fantastic. Some of the best satay I have ever had. The chicken skewers were absolutely delicious with a beautiful char.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Both my Wife and I eat a plant based diet and the Vegan options on offer here are amazing. Nice and spicy, fresh and oh so tasty. A must visit to anyone in the area.

Very disappointed after all the hype. All I can say is that it must have been a different chef on the night Jay Rayner went! Following the reply I'm not sure how identifying myself makes any difference. We DID tell the waitress our thoughts when she asked how our meal was as we paid. She said it was a shame we hadnt enjoyed it and she looked forward to seeing us next time we came! Pretty tasteless and the beef was dry. Don't understand what all the hype is. Simple.

Lovely place and beautiful food!

It is an amazing restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, the staff are very friendly, with regards to the food if you want to try something new then you won't be disappointed, lets just say when we finished the plates where empty.

This isn't just finger lickingly tasty food it is a whole culinary experience at a different level, which doesn't pale every time we revisit. The authentic food with serving pots actually brought from abroad and an extremely friendly staff creates a homely yet a well thought out restaurant experience. 5 stars all the way!

The food is amazing! Huge portions and the most authentic Indonesian food I’ve experienced in London. Would highly recommend! This is the second time I’ve been and am always pleased by the friendly service, beautiful and delicious food and chilled atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back!

Incredible surly waitress. Mackerel sate portion was tiny and arrived with no sauce?? Forgot our mains order so we waited for ever and when we asked what was happening we then got dishes separately... . Grilled fish was fried. Really not a good experience at all. You can do much better although possibly not in Barnet...Jay Rayner clearly had a very different experience?

Great chicken satay, next level. Rest of meal was just OK, especially after I read the amazing reviews we expected a bit more. Bit good food just don't think we'd do back.

We have deep-fried sweetcorn fritters, which remind me of similar dishes in the repertoire of Myanmar, the heat-blistered kernels bursting out of their skins amid the batter matrix. They are scattered with chopped spring onions and served with more of the perky sambal, which is weirdly addictive now the hiccups have subsided.

I drove pass Bali Satay House, first time seeing it as I am not from the area. I decided to stop for a takeout and I am glad I stopped. I only ordered chicken satay and chicken Nasi Goreng. Delicious! Really both delicious. I will now be a regular.

The food was very nice, btw they don’t offer chopsticks due to it being an Indonesian restaurant so order skewers and use them as chopsticks

Walking through the white French doors you are invited into a warm cosy ambience, transporting you to the far east with red hanging lanterns and birdcages. We came here with a family, the service was excellent, every single dish once you place the the first spoon in your mouth your mouth is bursting with the most exotic, tantalising, beautiful flavours to the point you do not want to talk or conversation, you just want to revel in the flavour. Excellent standard of food. Highly recommend it.

Went today based on “the review” and was supremely impressed. Parking was easy the staff superb but the star was the food - 4 of us had prawns (x2) and sweetcorn fritters to start and then for mains we had the deep fried chicken and the chicken satay plus beef rendang (spelling?) my naming of the food is way off how brilliantly detailed it was without a bite being anything but a total enjoyment - then we had puddings and left joyful into the night

I enjoyed taking away meals for a while now, but the latest I've picked up have ridiculously small portion inside while their prices have been pumped up.

Really disappointed by the meal here. Firstly, beware of their allergen information as the staff say this is wrong on the menu and the website, which is a serious issue. It's listed against each dish, so diners could easily just order without telling staff they have an allergy. In terms of the food, the satay sauce was pretty good and meat was ok, but all the mains were very ordinary and lacked typical flavour for the dishes. Staff were friendly enough, but mistakes were made with the order without apology and service was slow. I was worrying about how to answer the "how was everything" question from the owners, but they never asked. Have heard good things and other reviewers seemed to enjoy it, so perhaps it was an off night.

Really enjoyed my visit here. The satays are fantastic, both the lamb and chicken varieties, with generous portion sizes. The nasi goreng was also nice, and the rendang. Prices are very reasonable.

Very tasty food and reasonably priced. Interesting menu of drinks and dishes. Very authentic Indonesian cuisine. Loved the chicken satay and the grilled bream. Fish was chilli hot! Generous portions and some dishes could be shared. On Wednesdays there is Balinese dancing. Would go there again. Staff provided excellent customer service.

Fun and different cultural experience

Food is exceptional! 3 visits in 2 months.

You are warmly welcomed on entry, and the service is consistently fantastic throughout the meal. Food is freshly prepared, full of flavour. Easy parking outside.

We booked a table at Bali Satay for four of us after reading the reviews on here. We were greeted upon entering by Ben who was such a welcoming helpful man, who could not do any more to make us feel at home. He went through the menu explaining each of the dishes and advised us on choices. Soon after the Co-owner Simon introduced himself to us and spent a short time talking about the evolution of the one of only two classic Indonesian restaurants in London. To sum up the service was hugely attentive, the food was above exceptional and ambiance delightful Simon & Ben. You have an amazing restaurant, one which as President of a large North London Club will be a regular visitor, along with many of our members for a long, long time. DO GIVE THIS RESTAURANT A TRY…. Food tasted good, but portion was tiny and the most overpriced food I've ever eaten. Beef dish didn't have much beef and mostly sauce.

If you happen to be local, give it a try. Lovely spiced fresh food, a different and very enjoyable change from the normal offerings. The closest to Balinese food you'll get without actually going there.

We held our son's birthday dinner here. Simon the Manager was excellent at organizing a set menu for our guests. All the food was delicious and our invited family thoroughly enjoyed everything. Thank you Simon and team for a memorable and wonderful evening for a special occasion.

Great selection of Balinese dishes. Definitely beats your run of the mill Indonesian restaurants. Also very reasonably priced.

Newish restaurant for the area. The atmosphere was relaxing and the food was exceptionally delicious and well presented. The prices were reasonable for London. Our only suggestion for improvement is to increase the number of waiting staff in order to speed up the service. The poor singular waiter tried his best to look after all tables tonight and managed very well. Overall however, a very enjoyable experience and we will be back.

Bali satay is a very popular Indonesian restaurant around new barnet area,the inside decoration and fabulous food will take you to far east,seriously recommend and the service was great too..

What a beautiful restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious and very authentic, The lunch deal is an absolute steal. Hope to spread the word, as we had lunch there and had the whole place to ourselves.

Wow! What an experience. Could not recommend this place more. The joy I felt after the first bite of their nasi goreng is indescribable. The staff are lovely, especially our waiter Alex. It’s like a little slice of Indonesia in New Barnet.

Authentic Indonesian dishes and friendly service Indonesian style

Absolute gem of a restaurant. Every dish was freshly cooked and flavourful. Service was very friendly and helpful in navigating the menu. There was so much more to try that we hope to go back again soon. Chicken satay was juicy; nasai goreng was well spiced without being greasy and stodgy with spices; pls check our receipt for full list of dishes, all are worth getting.

Wow wow wow wow!!! Incredibly authentic taste!!! Big portions!! Perfect for a food lover like me and the cendol was spot on!! My partner is Indonesian and she often gets homesick, so we go on missions to find food that replicates what she’s used to from back home, even when we’re abroad, i.e. Hong Kong or Malaysia. We often leave feeling that our mission was not accomplished. Bali satay house was the first restaurant that we’ve found that had that true nostalgia feeling for her. We may have traveled 2 hours for this restaurant but we’ll definitely be returning!! To add: When I visit Indonesia, restaurants usually give me the ‘bule’ spice level which basically means not spicy at all! For a white guy, I really love spicy food and can handle it better than my partner. I think the restaurant still played it safe and made it with a low level of spicy, so if there’s a code word for me to get spicier than please let me know lol My only complaint would be that you’re not located closer to me lol. Please open another store in West Sussex :) Just to add: the portion size and quality in comparison to the price we paid was gold standards in my opinion. See you soon!!

Amazing service and great food.

We ordered bebek betutu and rendang from Bali Satay House through delivery app. The bebek betutu / Balinese-style duck with sambal matah, was one of the tastiest betutu I've tried! It's flavourful, rich, full of fresh spices. I highly recommend their bebek betutu. All food is halal.

Definitely the best satay house in town. It’s just too far!

We had a super evening with some great dishes. A couple were a bit below par, but over all it was good food. The service was VERY slow, despite there being 4 wait staff at least and only a few tables of people. The peanut crackers when we arrived were sensational, as was the tapioca cakes and the satay - which is very different to what most people expect of satay, and much more like authentic Indonesian saté. The salad which was suggested to us was very underwhelming, and the mee goreng was not very authentic or flavourful. The rendang and the duck were super. The table wasn't wiped down between main course and pudding, and half the pudding menu was not available. I would return, but maybe have more sate than main dishes.

We had actually planned to eat somewhere else but saw there was dancing and entertainment on Wednesday night so decided to try something new and I think we have just found our new favourite local. The satay starters were brilliant, the beef was so tender, as was the lamb. The duck was great as well. Staff were so friendly and you could tell there was a lot of love and thought put in to food and the overall experience. We can’t wait to be back.

The two waiters were very friendly and helpful. All food is freshly made. If you don't like too much chilli they are happy to do dish without it. I am gluten intolerant and all dishes on the menu are marked with if they contain gluten, nuts, seafood etc. Would happily go back for another meal.

A really nice authentic indonesian restaurant in London (finally). So far this is the only indonesian restaurant that serves real indonesian food. We tried quite a few foods from the menu. The satay is to die for. They made it so fresh, the peanut sauce is a real deal. The mutton curry feels homey and warm, with juicy meat and herby broth. But the best for me was the fried noodle. It's soooo good I can't describe it. But sadly the beef rendang could be better, the meat was tender and delicious but from Indonesian point of view, the rendang sauce could be stronger. We ended the meal with fried banana and ice cream dessert. It was really good and the portion was big. Overall the portion of the food here is big to share. Just remember the best way to eat indonesian food is to order several mains and share them, and have them with warm delicious jasmine rice! Note: for gluten intolerant people, be careful as Indonesian dishes usually contain gluten (flour and soy sauce). So, make sure you ask the waiter there what the allergens are. The ambiance of the restaurant is good, very indonesian, but I am not a fan of the batik table cloth and the seat cloth. Definitely will come back here again more often to try more menus.

Outstanding customer service, amazing delicious food. Great to taste food I hadn’t tried before. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful, the prices were really reasonable and we weren’t rushed. Lovely atmosphere, will def be going back & would highly recommend to all.

This place is definitely special, we had never tried Indonesian food and we have been amazed by the broad, different flavours, the freshness of the ingredients and the nicely finished meat. The service is very attentive, kind and generous. Really enjoyable experience, will be back!

Due to work commitments, I had to eat at home so I went to Bali Satay House Indonesian Restaurant which is less than a mile away from my home to order some dinner to take home. This was the 1st time I tried this Restaurant. I was offered 20% discount for collecting my order myself. The waiting was about half an hour but the wait was 100% worth it. The food is so yummy. It is so fresh. I ordered chicken and prawn starters and spring rolls as starters. I ordered Indonesian curry chicken and green curry tofu as main courses plus 2 portions of plain rice. The total bill was £47 after the discount. It is good value for money as the portions are very adequate. We must go there to have a sit down dinner soon. We really love the food 💞💞

Lamb satay was amazing. Tofu Tahsu starter needed a sauce or more flavours. Beef Rendang was delicious but I would have liked more meat! Lamb Kambing curry was delicious but again needed more meat and maybe less bone! Jasmine rice was great. Complimentary Coconut drink was delicious. And free crackers very kind. Good prices, But mains maybe a little high for me, Excellent staff and very friendly service tonight, And a great atmosphere. We will definitely return, Many thanks!

Great atmosphere....With traditional dancing on Wednesday nights.....

We went into Bali Satay for lunch on a Saturday, from the moment we entered we were treated as special guests. The decor was exotic, traditional and welcoming. We ordered 3 starters and a main, the satay (chicken & fish) and the martabak daging beef pastry which was fresh, delicious and a delight to eat. The Chicken Satay was the best we had ever had. The lamb Kare Kambing curry main was tender, tasty and a delight. Overall a delightful experience and excellent service. We will return.

Lovely place all around. Service is super friendly and the food is delicious. I've been here twice already, and will come back. On Wednesdays there's live traditional dancing and it'll be more crowded, but definitely worth it if you manage to book. I'll note that they have an excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan food, as well as amazing meat-based options.

So this was my first time eating Indonesian food & how I’ve gone this long in life without it is beyond me! If you’re on the edge considering trying, I urge you to do it at Bali Satay House. The tall chap who guided us through our experience dealt with choosing our food himself, he did not disappoint. Well able to cater to our allergies (the two kids we had with us had seafood allergies), choosing the appropriate food portion sizes (nothing went to waste, certainly no one was left hungry) & doing it all whilst managing a busy, full restaurant - I was literally in awe of his skill & talent. Food deserves a special mention too for being fresh & local - exactly what one expects when they’re dining out. I couldn’t pick a favourite dish - they all had their own merits but the selection & variety was just perfect! No doubt I will be back with my other half very soon if not to share the experience with her, to succumb to my new hankering for those beautiful lamb satays & that moreish house rice! Lovely restaurant. The staff were welcoming and attentive. The food tasted great and the menu had a wide variety to choose from. We had three vegan starters and three mains to share between us and this was plenty. Allergens are clearly labelled on the menu and many dishes can be made with meat, tofu or tempeh, depending on what you wish.

What can I say about Bali Satay House. I’ve been working here for approximately 2 months and it’s been amazing. The team I work with are great, the owners are hard working and have been very supportive during my time here (couldn’t ask for anything more) and let’s not forget the food.. WOW I’m lucky I get to take it home haha!! Please come down whenever you get a chance and I’ll be more than happy to accommodate!

Really enjoyed our evening here. Food was delicious. The peanut satay sauce is to die for. Enjoyed all the dishes but particularly the Tofu dish. The beautiful Balinese dancers were charming, but would happily go back regardless. Delighted to have another good option in Barnet.

Very good, relatively new food, very tasty good menu for meat and vegan taste not a large menu but interesting and food freshly cooked. We'll worth a second visit which we will be doing shortly. Also waiting team actually spoke with enthusiasm and knowledge of the food on the menu.

Fantastic new addition to the local dining options. Delicious food, miles better than the usual thai/SE Asian options you find in suburban london. This is proper Indonesian cooking made with a real effort to surprise their customers and exceed your expectations.

The restaurant has potential but the staff need some training. There was clearly a lack of staff in the kitchen as the food for every table in the restaurant was taking a long time to come. The waiters tried to kill time by asking us if we wanted drinks at least four times before our starters came. Not sure if this was a money making tactic? The waiters did not address the issue of the long wait period for food to any of their customers and did not even care to apologize for the over an hour wait. When the food eventually came, one waiter would come in an out of the kitchen trying to serve my table of 6 whilst another waiter was setting the table next to us. Why did the waiters not work together to give our food when we had just been waiting over an hour? I really wanted to like this restaurant because it had good reviews and good location and decent food but they need to work on their service.

I had lunch there during Tom a weekday, didn’t expect much. But the food was so tasty and the portions VERY generous considering the price. Staff was friendly too, I definitely recommend this place if you want to try something different without spending a fortune.

I had lunch here a few weeks ago. The food was absolutely delicious and every bite of my pudding - banana fritters with peanut butter and coconut ice creams - was heavenly. Went here last night after it was recommended by a local dog walker who lived in Indonesia. It was fabulous. Best chicken satay I've had in my life. There are vegan (tempeh) versions and fish options. Everything is home made and freshly prepared. Super friendly young staff. Balinese dancers on a Wednesday evening.

After a disappointing first take away (sate tempe and rendang) several months ago, we decided to try again. We were so pleased with the pisang goreng, vegan nasi goreng and tofu curry we ordered. Even better and more authentic, its served with emping and even rempeyek which brought back memories of my home in Indonesia after all these years. The acar (cucumber and carrot in vinegar) was like home made, and there was even Teh Botol so I was one very happy Indonesian British girl ❤️ we will be back for more!

A friend took Me to the restaurant.There were six of us.Table was already booked.The owners husband and wife were so friendly and made us feel welcomed. We ordered satay for our starters.Beef,chicken and fish.Beef was so so so delicious.Typical Indonesian taste.I tasted fish satay for the first time so tasty For Mains we had fried rice vegan ,fried mee(noodles),morning glory,Chicken fried,soto ayam soup and duck. Desert Goreng pisang (fried banana) Jasmine tea. Really enjoyed the food. Will visit again. The waiter was very helpful and friendly. We watched live Indonesian dancers performing during the meal. Well worth a visit..
