Yemen Heaven in York

Sadly as much as I wanted to love the place it didnt work for me. It’s an old pub so the decor is average but it is the food we came for. Didn’t start well … sat next to table of loud drunk folk from the races… again not the food but happy for us to move. When the food did come the starters were tasty but small … for the mains I had fah’sa …. Definitely a highlight very different and tasty but essentially a small bowl of broth with some shredded lamb for £22 my partner had falafel which was tasty but dry. Overall for the price point there are better places for Middle Eastern food in york

We started by sharing a fattousch salad which was really refreshing. For mains we had lamb Mandi and fasha, both of which had generous portions of lamb in them cooked really well. Pudding was an um Ali - a sorry of bread pudding - and an affogato. The restaurant was quiet and staff were attentive. One thing to note is that they only take cash.

Just one of the most gorgeous places I’ve been too. Excellent food, lovely service, great interior. Looks like not much from the outside but treat you perfectly when you’re inside. Great story as well, great options. Not badly priced either, although it only takes cash so bare that in mind. Would love to come back when I’m next in York!

Really friendly and helpful, good quality middle eastern food. Helped out with a last minute booking for a group when another restaurant let us down. Lovely covered courtyard out the back to sit in. Only takes cash, but there is a cash point just over the road. Breads and ful beans were well liked by all that had them. Baba ganoush was delicious .

This is a must visit. The food was delicious, excellent flavours, really wanted to try a bit of everything. The staff are absolutely great. We really enjoyed every element and would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Regular customer here, menu hasnt changed much since opening, and dishes dont decrease in quality and taste! definitely will continue to visit regularly. I recommend Fool, Fahsa and chicken mandi (with homemade bread of course)!! 10/10

I absolutely love Yemen Heaven! It is located a little outside the city centre on Walmgate, so a beautfiul peaceful space to relax in. I went with a friend, and we both were so happy with the food. I had some delicious falafel with baba ghanoush and flat bread. Perfect for a vegan who loves Middle Eastern dishes! The atmosphere was lovely because of the friendly staff, cosy interiors and ambient Arabian music. I can't wait to come back and show more friends this wonderful place!! :)

Love this place, such a warm welcome and the food is always fantastic. The homemade bread and mezze are so good! We are regulars and will continue to be so..

Really delicious food. I particularly enjoyed my dessert. The staff were really helpful with my friend who cannot have sweeteners- they make all their cocktails themselves and do not use pre mixes so she was able to have one.

Gorgeous authentic food. Felt like you were genuinely served family recipes. Service excellent. We’ll definitely be back.

We were privileged to be invited to a special celebration dinner by a friend. The restaurant catered especially to his requirements. The food was delicious. The surroundings just right and the staff were very attentive.

A charming restaurant on the outskirts of York city centre. The food was superb and the care taken by the serving staff was exemplary. We ate 3 delightful courses and followed the useful advice from our waiter regarding selection and quantity. I believe the deserts were some of the best that I have experienced. If we lived in York we would become regulars.

A superb meal which was familiar yet different. Great service and attention to detail. The pudding was probably one of the best that I have experienced. I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant to others.

Our first night in York and Yemen Heaven was right near our hotel. The menu outside interested us enough to try it for dinner. We were not disappointed! The staff were friendly and the food was lovely! We had the sea bass and the fah’sa tagine. Highly recommend 😋!

Friendly and polite staff. Sign on the door saying they take cash only. The starters were the stand out part of this meal - Baba ganoush and Fattoush salad. As the waiter said, both Levantine dishes. The smoky flavour of the ganoush cake through. The citrus, zesty taste of the salad was refreshing and good. We moved onto mains, both Yemen, but were not really blown away. Chicken Mandi was okay - not as much flavour as I expected. We also had tagine - fool, with feta cheese and accompanied by their homemade bread. This lacked the flavours it promised in the menu and was much more dense than expected; more like the consistency of ‘refried beans’. We did not have room left for desert. All came to £51, including a couple of beers. Glad we have tried this place, but don’t think we would rush back.

We found the staff to be friendly and the drinks and starters were delicious. These were fairly standard Middle Eastern dishes . The chicken mandi was bland though. A chicken quarter with rice and a small amount of chutney was bland and lacked flavour. The bean tagine was little more than refried beans without the spice. We won’t return. Beware it is cash only. No cards accepted

It's a nice and friendly atmosphere, polite waiters. Good amount of vegan foods. It was quite quiet and relaxed, not noisy.

Had the most Flavourful food here (would recommend the fahsa with either bread or rice) along with some delicious cocktails (espresso and passionfruit martini) & the service was impeccable, we felt like we were amongst a family which we were! 10/10

The food here is magnificent!!! A must!!!! Middle Eastern flavours and wonderful service. Be sure to have the homemade breads!

Phenomenally tasty food. We ate at a lot of places on Walmgate, but Yemen Heaven was probably our favourite. Delicious, hearty, food. The cuisine is a mix of North African and Arabian tastes and spices. We started with some fresh hummus, and then I had the Fah’sa (shredded lamb tagine) and my partner had the Salta (vegetable stew). It would be easy to overlook this place, as it’s the last real restaurant down the street, but it is well worth the effort. Also, if you’re staying in Hotel Indigo, it is literally next door! The *only* downside, is that they were not able to take card payments. Whilst they had a sign saying so on the door, we didn’t spot that, so had to pop over the road to the cash point after we’d eaten. It’d be good to have the waiters inform customers of that on entry (not sure if a one off, or if they never take cards).

Visited Sunday evening, the place was quiet but it was Easter Sunday. We sat in the front section by the bar. The service was good and the waiters very helpful explaining the menu. The food was very good but we made the mistake that others have and that was to order ‘ bread’ we assumed it would be small Italian style but we ordered one each and four big naan style pizza size breads arrived, one of these would have done for all four of us ! The waiter wrapped up the unused bread for us to take home.

What I like about Yemen Heaven is that the food tastes very fresh, like they've done absolutely everything themselves. So don't come with preconceptions - the mezze is filled with fresh ingredients with a couple of the items being salad based, so is not like standard dips etc you get elsewhere. We had the chicken and rice and the fool/ful/foul and again it was very fresh tasting and spiced well. Its a fairly small menu, and the wine list maybe isn't the best going, but overall I was impressed.

We sat in the ‘outside’ sitting area for dinner which was lovely and atmospheric with heaters and blankets in case you got too chilly. The cocktails were delicious, and the food was really authentic and so tasty with good size portions. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the servers were friendly, would definitely come here again.

Had high hopes for meal, but we went on a night there was an event being prepared. Never felt so unwanted. Table in a walk way and we were the only ones there, freezing due to a dozen staff walking in and out from outside, barely acknowledged as their focus was on something else. We ordered and mezze was ok. Hummus really good, the rest very ordinary. Lamb tagine, not what I expected but very tasty. Seabass not flavoursome and the potatoes were not homemade. Deep fried from frozen. Would never return which is a shame as I had looked forward to this for months.

It was a lovely meal and I would recommend. The truffle humour was delightful. The sea bass was great but the Fah’sa was the stand out meal - would recommend with the homemade bread.

It was a cute converted pub. Food was tasty but only average for Yemeni food. Sheffield has much tastier restaurants. Also in comparison to Sheffield it was double the price. Very expensive. Portion sizes were not as generous.

Amazing food. The lamb literally fell off the bone. Lovely fresh tastes. Very friendly service. Would highly recommend a visit.

The food at Yemen Heaven is amazing!! The lamb mandi in particular. The staff are friendly and nice. And the “Umm Ali” dessert dish is the best dessert in york!!

This was a meal to remember, every element was perfect. The place is unpretentious and comfortable with staff who never stop smiling and are genuinely delighted to make the visit enjoyable. We shared Baba Ghanouch to start which was creamy and garlicky and very obviously homemade. For mains we had two of the tagines which showed the chef's flair for flavour and seasoning. They were so good! The breads which came with them were huge but we're so good that we ate far more than we should have done! We were too full for dessert but had a coffee and mint tea, both of which were very good.

Most amazing place for food. Few choices on the menu, but excellent choices just the same. Service good. Will hopefully return again very soon.

What a great find. A (welcome) limited menu of really delicious food, with some flavours I've never tried before. We had a few mezze starters, and then the lamb and fool tagines. Both an absolute riot of flavours. Really friendly and attentive waiter too. We'll definitely be back.

We spent time reading reviews of restaurants in York for a special occasion. And we weren't disappointed. After a warm welcome We started with a couple of Hugos, lamb soup and a tabbouleh salad. For mains we had the lamb tagine and the Fool with a bowl of rice and a bread. And finished off with Areeka. Everything was fab from start to finish... the welcome, the service and obviously the food. Highly recommend this restaurant if you are in York. We'll certainly be back!

The service was 5 stars. We highly suggest to visit it. 🇮🇹 Mia figlia ed io abbiamo mangiato benissimo allo Yemen Heaven. Il ristorante era caratteristico e il cibo era autentico! Abbiamo avuto una buona selezione di antipasti e e i secondi piatti erano deliziosi. Il servizio e' stato da 5 stelle. Consigliamo vivamente di visitarlo.

The food was lovely. I had a lamb stew with delicious home made bread. A small menu but absolutely packed full of flavour. The staff were friendly and service was good. A great choice for a meal with friends.

Delicious, healthy and authentic Yemeni cuisine and a friendly welcome in this family-run restaurant. The food was very fresh and tasty, especially the 'house bread' which was soft and topped with nutty, black sesame seeds. I liked the background music from the Yemen which added to the atmosphere but was quiet enough to allow for easy conversation at the table. The food was so good that I've tried to re-create it at home for friends. But my ful stew can't compare with the real thing!

Super. Staff were very friendly and welcoming, food was lovely, setting was fab. Tremendous introduction to Middle Eastern food for those who haven't tried it, or for those who have it's a welcome return. Great shisha too!

I was really looking forward to eating here as I had a friend visiting us in York. I booked a table for 3(I have the confirmation email) and for some reason they had prepared a table for 2. We asked if we could upgrade to a table for 3 and they said no unless we wanted to sit outside - it was snowing at the time! We were told to take it or leave it with no real apology, so we all squashed around one table. And that kind of set the tone for the rest of the evening. We had to ask for the extra cutlery for the third person, when the starter came there were no side plates so we had to ask for that and a pile was roughly dumped down in front of one person and on the way out staff rudely pushed past us. The food was ok. So just a disappointing experience. : (

Very friendly staff, new and surprising flavours! It was Saturday night and tried to find a place to eat after snooker game, which was dufficult. Luckily we got a table from Yemen Heaven! With no idea what to expect the food was really good.

The food is very tasty, well balanced and authentic. Engaged and friendly front of house and waiting staff made this experince exceptional. Well priced menus and a great selection of juices!🤗

Been meaning to try this for ages (having spied the yemeni chilli cheese dip, which sounded great and did not disappoint!) and so glad we did. All the food was great (the fool, baba ghanoush and special dips were particular highlights) and a great selection of drinks too (especially the lemon and mint). The service was also great, so friendly. Only sadness was that we were too full to try desserts!

A great little find. The food was well cooked with lovely flavour and subtle spices. A couple more vegetarian dishes on the menu would be a nice addition but will definitely go again.

Really amazing atmosphere with great food! The service is also great with really friendly staff. They have a rlly cool and cosy outside area perfect for some warm tea!
