You see fake reviews on every establishment and Iv seen a few on this pub over the last couple of months from people, regarding being refusing entry and/or served due to being Irish travellers. Today Iv seen a video of a 72 year old women coming into the pub and being refused a drink. No reason given only the man pointing to a sign saying no filing and we have the right to refuse to serve anyone. What could possibly be the reason for refusing a 72 year old women a drink in an empty pub? Sean and Katie how do you explain this? I'm Irish myself, my dad is a traveller and my mum is English, Iv been in the pub on plenty of occasions and so have my family it's just vile racist behaviour. All of your customers well most of them are Irish and I wonder what they would think doing that to an elderly lady all because she is a traveller. You should be ashamed of yourselves, I will be sharing the video to all of the local Barnet, Hadley wood etc groups so people can see what you have done. If the shoe was on the other foot and it was any other ethnic minority or race there would be an uproar. Never again will I or my family step in the pub or recommend it to anyone.

'Regular Customers Only' Not sure why anyone is reviewing this pub as 'welcoming' or 'friendly'... There a sign in the door stating 'Regular Customers Only'. This may or may not be legal, I don't know - although the management seems keen enough to spread their tables onto the public highway, maintained at the cost of all taxpayers, not just their 'regulars'. This sign has appeared a number of times over the past couple of years (I think they've been told to remove the sign on occasion, but it has gone up again at a later date). Whether legal and 'their right' to do this or not, it's unfriendly at best and more likely a dog-whistle for blatant discrimination. If you're happy with discrimination, feel free to ignore this. Otherwise, report or vote with your feet - there are many other welcoming places in Barnet.

Been in many times with my young lad (10). He sits quietly with a Diet Coke and some crisps after a long walk or to watch a game. He’s even been known to go up to the bar and get his own. Place is normally very quiet. Suddenly today, when it was a bit busier, we came into watch a game and there was a strictly enforced “no under 16’s rule” and they refused to serve us. No problem, your business, but we won’t be back when the Sunday afternoon part-timers disappear.

Great atmosphere/ friendly locals ‘a real hub of the community’ & if the management doesn't want to serve someone for whatever reason then that’s their choice ‘ rightly or wrongly’ We all get it wrong on occasion/ no one’s perfect/ but it’s more right than wrong at this establishment I’d assert .. A well ran pub ‘ for a reason …

As a loyal patron of the Monk and Holt Pub in Barnet, I feel compelled to speak out against the false accusations of appalling, repugnant, and discriminatory behavior leveled against our esteemed landlady. Having frequented this establishment for quite some time, I can attest to the utmost professionalism, kindness, and fairness displayed by our landlady in all her dealings. It is truly disheartening to see baseless allegations tarnishing the reputation of someone who has consistently shown dedication to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all patrons. From personal interactions to observing her interactions with others, it is evident that she treats everyone with respect and fairness, regardless of background or identity. Furthermore, the Monk and Holt Pub has always been a place of camaraderie and community spirit, largely due to the efforts of our landlady in fostering such an atmosphere. Her commitment to ensuring that all patrons feel valued and comfortable is commendable and should not be overshadowed by unfounded accusations. In times like these, it is crucial to support those who uphold principles of fairness and equality. Let us not succumb to baseless rumors but instead stand by our landlady, who has undoubtedly proven herself to be a pillar of integrity and goodwill in our community.

***Appalling, Repugnant and Blatantly Discriminatory behaviour by the landlady (Veronica) that needs urgent exposure to warn prospective patrons about the shocking mistreatment and abuse they may encounter.*** I visited Ye Olde Monken Holte on Sunday the 18th of February on my own and encountered an incredibly distressing experience that compels me to share what happened. From approximately 4:20 pm to just before 8:00 pm, I was a patron, enjoying a few drinks whilst sitting perfectly quiet on my own. However, my evening took an abrupt turn when the manager (or landlady) who I believe to be named Veronica, approached me as I was finishing my drink. In an astonishingly rude manner, she said “I want you to finish up, leave immediately, and NEVER return”. This command came out of nowhere, leaving me bewildered. I had had no previous interaction with her AT ALL and had been sat perfectly quiet minding my own business. The entire time I was in the Monken Holte , I would confidently say I was the MOST quiet and non-disruptive patron in the entire establishment, as I was on my own! I was even extremely thoughtful and accommodating, as a lovely bar staff member came up to me at one point and asked if i’d kindly move tables as there would be live music later. I immediately said "of course" and instantly moved my things and moved to the smallest table available away from where the music would be set up. After a while the pub started filling out for the live music and I started to see patrons standing up near me and so I even invited them to share my table out of goodwill. Straight after the landlady had rudely accosted me and told me to leave and never come back, I looked up at the patrons on my table and they appeared as shocked and bewildered as I was. Their expression mirrored a mix of disbelief and discomfort, leaving them almost shell-shocked with what they witnessed. They vicariously offered apologies on behalf of what they witnessed and their sentiment echoed the sheer astonishment and bewilderement I was feeling, affirming that I wasn’t alone in hearing the outrageous remarks from the landlady. Puzzled and seeking clarification, I packed up and before leaving found her standing by the bar and politely asked her if I had done something wrong. To my surprise, she arrogantly declared, "I don't have to explain anything." I proposed that understanding the issue would prevent future misunderstandings. Regrettably, her response remained unchanged: "I don't have to give an explanation." I suggested that withholding an explanation could be perceived as discrimination, to which she callously dismissed me and walked off. This incident on the 18th of February left me deeply disturbed and convinced that such behaviour deserves exposure. Discrimination should never find a home in any establishment, let alone one as historically rooted as Ye Olde Monken Holte. I urge potential patrons to consider the troubling atmosphere created by Ye Olde Monken Holte's management on the 18th of February and think twice before supporting an establishment that condones such disgraceful conduct. In closing, I want to emphasise that this is not merely a review, but a serious matter that demands a thorough investigation. I've also just seen other 1 star reviews that have had a similar encounter with the landlady, and so this cannot be considered a one-off, or case of "just having a bad day". I implore the brewery to thoroughly review the accounts presented here, as well as other reviews highlighting similar encounters with the landlady. URGENT action is required to address this issue promptly, to rectify this matter, ensuring a swift resolution to this incident.

Shell Shocked or what. Just been to the Monk to listen to music and have a drink with my partner. The landlady told her barman not to serve me. I asked why and she replied, rather grumpily, that she didn't have to give a reason. I have been going here for many years, less frequently for a while, and have never had any issues. I would have thought that she would want custom and at least explain why my custom isn't wanted. Looking at social media, it appears this may not be an isolated incident. Still trying to process my being persona non grata.

This is normally my Local, visiting at least 4/5 times a week. Normally no problems, Gerry is always so welcoming however, visited here on St Patrick’s Day with family and was told 3 drinks in our friend who travelled almost an hour to celebrate with us would not be served (wasn’t drunk or any bother). Veronica gave no reason why he would not be served when we asked politely. Veronica simply replied ‘there was no reason to give and we should ‘f**k off’ to another pub if we want to get served. Absolutely disgusting language towards a customer especially one who provides the pub with reoccurring business.

This is my local, I drink in here everyday. On St. Patrick’s day we arrived and got served, no problems. I love coming to this pub, all staff are pleasant and jolly. I have never had an issue except on St Patrick’s Day when Veronica the landlady refused to serve my friend. My friend had a thick Dublin accent, assuming he was a traveller she declined to serve him. I have been in the pub before when she has locked the door to ‘keep the travellers out’. My friend from Dublin was targeted my RACISM - of all days to refuse an Irish man of a drink. I was with family and was told to ‘f**k off’ by Veronica and she ‘was too busy to give a reason as to why she wouldn’t serve my friend’. I have never felt so embarrassed in front of all the people I know in the pub and made to feel so little in my local. I will be letting my instagram followers (all 50,000 of them) aware of this along with other locals who I recommend the pub to, unless I do not hear a response from the Monken Holt. I didn’t want to go down this route but would like to know why a local like myself who supports the business was not given a VALID explanation and instead given foul and offensive abuse.

Service at the bar is dreadful. Although the place is three quarters empty getting served before the rag tag gaggle of locals is very difficult. I waited an unreasonable length of time and decided to leave...as I was going out the door the awful person allegedly serving behind said my pint was ready, however, being treat as a secondary is not acceptable. I left with no intention of returning for crap service and £5.30 a pint. Don't recommend this place unless you talk shite and live around the corner.

Poor food, awful service and hopeless management . Saturday evening and the place was heaving. The car park was full and there were several large tables of guests celebrating birthdays. Not a great start. We found a table in the large conservatory and waited to be served. A friendly, young girl who admitted was working here for the first week came over and asked if we would like to order drinks. I asked for a wine list and this seemed to startle her. She returned with a printed list but had to find a colleague when I asked which wines came by the glass. We also asked for a jug of tap water and a spicy tomato juice. The jug of water was just enough to fill the four small glasses and was never offered to be replaced. The tomato juice had no spice at all and when queried a different waitress brought bottles of Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce as they leave it to the customer to add it themselves. My glass of wine had to be returned as there were several things floating in it. We waited ages for the food order to be taken and eventually our starters arrived. My haloumi chips were cold and soggy. The potato skins were cold and tasteless. The main courses were no better. My slow cooked Portobello beef comprised four 3 cm cubes of tough lukewarm chunks of beef served on a dollop of mashed potato and some beans. It was awful and I left most of it. My wife’s steak was hard and also cold and she left the majority. Our guests also did not finish their meals. The conservatory was often devoid of any waiting staff but occasionally had five young waitresses standing with their backs to the guests chatting away to each other. On two occasions we had to leave the table to get someone to attend. The manager, who greeted us on our arrival was never seen again. In all it took three hours for us to finish our very poor meal but we were quicker than the neighbouring table, where after waiting more than an hour for their starters were told that the order had somehow not reached the kitchen. We said how poor the meal and service had been, but this just brought a curt sorry and an embarrassed smile. No visit from the ever missing manager. Never again.
