Bald Faced Stag in Barnet

So well looked after, great staff, great menu and all round a lovely pub. Well priced for the area and overall a lovely experience. Also did Sunday lunch which was fantastic and great for young kids too.

The Stag is always my go to pub. The staff are so friendly and there is always an amazing atmosphere. The music on a Friday night is such a great way to end the week!

We have recently visited this pub after stumbling upon it when we came out of the train station nearby. Adele couldn’t have done more for us and was very accommodating with all of our questions and needs throughout serving us. We felt that my husbands allergies were taken seriously which in turn put our minds at ease and this is definitely on our list of places we would like to return to in the near future! A bonus was that when we visited they had some live music on which was great to listen to!! Will be back again.

We hired a room here after my Mum’s funeral at nearby St Marylebone Crematorium and the food as excellent. Very varied choice of food that was still edible after a couple of hours. The pub as quiet and the room was perfect for what we wanted.

Rude, aggressive and racist staff. I have lodged a formal complaint and am in the process of seeking legal advice for treatment which has left me in a state of alarm and distress. Totally irrational behavior which is completely unacceptable in modern day Britain. I have many friends and family in the Finchley area and have advised them all of how we were treated. I strongly suggest you stay away from this place if you are someone who stands for fair treatment for all.

Great pub. All the staff were super friendly. Tried out the new menu (recommend the Korean crumpet 😋). Great wine list. Loads of space.

Live locally, and come to the Stag for drinks and dinner often. New spring menu, which was fantastic - chicken liver parfait profiteroles to start, an awesome creation. New and improved burger is also a hit. Service was of top quality as always, felt very looked after. Love to see an exciting new menu and can’t wait to come back again.

I've been to the restaurant several times. Normally okay. Last night was awful. The two main courses we wanted were both off the menu for the evening. The Caesar salad was a few lettuce leaves with Parmesan flakes. That was it. No croutons, no anything else - and not cheap either. The gnocchi was just edible. Was the chef off for the evening?

Stopped in here solo on a Wednesday for fish n chips and was really welcomed by staff and the cozy vibe. The food was fantastic and service even better. Gerrard, a manager, saw that I was alone and invited me to play the weekly pub quiz and I had a blast. Definitely recommend coming here for good food and even better times.

This is a nice, local East Finchley pub that's well run and covers all of the bases. There's a restaurant serving decent food, the range of beers on tap is pretty good, it's not so noisy that you can't have a conversation and they host a wide range of interesting events. I'm not sure that the pub is outstanding but it does all that you need well enough and it's a pleasant, relaxed place to chill out with a pint.

Nice pub. Cosy inside and chap behind bar very friendly and helpful. Toilets nice and clean. Didn’t have time to eat. Saw they have a jazz band playing on Sunday evening; will return to check that out and the food.

Food was quite good and service pleasant. Unfortunately the front bar where you enter was very shabby and really smelled foul. If that area gets a good clean it would help improve first impressions!

To me the best pub in London, at least in 1994. Wish I could meet Simon Taylor again.

We didn't have any starters, both enjoyed our main courses very much, and the desserts were also both good. The Stag dining area was a pleasant place to eat, and we will definitely go back there again soon.

Passing through East Finchley, we spotted this pub, so popped in. There is a good choice of beers. This quite a roomy pub and finding seating is good. There is booth seating along with armchairs. We only had drinks but they do serve food. The staff were friendly. Will definitely return here when in the area.

Great waiters, attentive and cheerful. Salads were good and nice menu with yummy puds. The 5pm jazz players were really good and added to the friendly atmosphere.

We had a family and friends celebration for 20 people and having always enjoyed the hospitality and ambience of The Bull Faced Stag and wanted it here. The management of could not be more accommodating, arranging tables, and answering any queries. Everyone was given the menu to choose and as usual, it delivered. There burger is up there with the best and their fish and chips is huge. Everyone said how much they enjoyed the food, which, given the quality is excellent value for money. The service, given there were so many of us, was exemplary. Got to thank Gerard, Adele and the team for their hard work in making such a memorable occasion.

Love the Bald Faced Stag, highly recommend! A cool, understated East Finchley local with a fantastic chilled vibe, amazing food & drink and fabulous staff. Lovely rooms and a great outdoor space, covered and with outdoor heaters. Great for private events too, hosted my Mum's 60th birthday - staff were so friendly, adaptable to last minute changes & additions and they made the whole thing so easy to organise. Night went off without a hitch too - took food orders well in advance and was impressed that everyone's dishes were assigned by name as it came out. Thank you so much Adele & Gerrard for all your help and for making Mum's night so special! We'll be back soon for your epic Sunday roast!

Lovely pub I had not been to in years. Always did good food. I asked the bartender what the lamb shepherds pie was like and he said good. Then I got something the size of a small tennis ball.17 quid..

I was in this pub last night and even though I love live music the guy that was playing was exceptionally loud, I was shouting over at my partner the whole night. Also at the end of the night a lady went up and spoke to him, presumably to request a song. He shouted at her ‘I don’t do ******* requests’. She walked away a little upset. When he had finished his set he again shouted out ‘Do I look like a ******* jukebox’. I think his manner was despicable and management should have a word.

The food is excellent. The service is excellent. The place is lovely. My only criticism is the portion sizes are slightly on the small side. Apart from that it’s a great place and I go there a lot

What a pub! Arrived on my own tonight feeling very vulnerable from a previous pub on area but was spotted immediately and made to feel so welcome. Great music, great atmosphere and staff who genuinely care about the clientele in their pub. As a woman on their own tonight couldn't rate this place higher

It’s a lovely dining room at the Bald Face Stag but unfortunately the food is nowhere near as good as it used to be. We had two very lovely servers but service was slow and when we questioned why our brownies didn’t have the coffee ice cream & honeycomb advertised, another member of staff told us we’d ordered the children’s version which only came with vanilla. We didn’t. But accepted this and ate it. But when the bill came, surprise surprise we’d been charged full price for the brownies. When I asked the same member of staff about it, she just took bull and changed it to kids. No apology, nothing. And we suspect other diners were being given this pudding and being charged full price. Dishonest, underhand and bad customer service on her part. Don’t think we’ll be going back for food which is a shame as it used to be really good.

Dramatic drop in stars since previous review. Very poor menu selection with many dishes unavailable. What was available was dry and unappealing (overcooked sausages) and served after a very long delay. How hard is it to cook and serve sausages? I can not answer, I do not work in the industry but it baffles me. Disappointed and not going back. There is enough choice in the EF area to avoid the Stag.

It was not so overcrowded and noisy and was nice to be able to talk to your friends. Service was good. Steak was good portion and chips too crispy. The steamed toffee pudding was really tasty. Nice experience

Really quiet today, all a bit flat I’m afraid, bit slow, food just ok and not overly cheap. It’s a lovely pub in a great spot with nice staff, just feels food quality and service need to suit.

Just had drinks and nibbles but nice! Christmas ambience could have been a little better.

The whole experience here was awful from start to finish. Place was overcrowded and servers couldn’t even get between tables. Service was extremely slow. We ended up waiting 2hrs 30 mins for our Christmas Dinner. Food was below average. Cellar was broken so none of the wine was cold so couldn’t order a bottle of wine on Christmas Day! £90 a head for absolutely nothing.

They’d run out of at least 60% of the menu?! We booked a table for 9 of us at 7:30 on a Sat night for a friend’s bday/xmas meal. Hoped to have the xmas menu but checked a day before & found out it needed to be preordered with 5 days’ notice. Disappointing this wasn’t made clear on the website but was assured we could order from the a la carte. However, when they came to take our order, at least 3 starters (all things we wanted) had run out, and at least 4 mains. Including the only 2 dishes I’d eat, so I ended up having to heavily adapt the burger & have it plain & boring, & they’d run out of every veg/fish option so my veggie friend was left with only a vegan burger which she didn’t want. They offered to take this off the bill but when the bill came it was still on. The food itself was nice but at least 4 of us had no choice but to somehow work out a last resort option & settle for things we would never have chosen to eat or pay for. Why was this stock shortage not communicated when we sat down or during the 30mins between us arriving & ordering? We were told these issues had been going on for a few days. So why was I not contacted with a warning that the majority of the menu including all veggie options would be unavailable? Especially as i’d spoken with the restaurant via Instagram the day before re the Xmas menu & was told we could order from the a la carte. When my friend whose bday it was ordered 2 cocktails after seeing on the menu that Saturdays are 2-4-1 cocktails after 8pm, the waitress said she didn’t think that was possible. Luckily they managed to honour their own publicised deal. Dessert was a mess too. The brownie said it came with coffee ice cream which was the reason my (veggie) friend ordered it. It came with vanilla & when questioned they said they’d run out of coffee. The whole meal - especially for my veg friend - was an absolute shambles. We spoke to the manager who did take 20% off. This (at a minimum) should’ve been done without prompt

For a christmas night out, there was 5 items off the menu that they didnt have which was awfull no christmas food, over cooked what we did get Very pricey for the wines wont go back in a hurry, this place has gone down

Not a good evening - theBakd Face Stag was incredibly noisy but my main complaint is with the food. Despite booking dinner reasonably early for 7.30 pm, several dishes on the menu were already sold out apparently. I ordered a Caesar salad mains dish . It was basically a bowl of lettuce and cost £16. I also ordered some fries with it but nevertheless, i fail to see how that pub can justify charging £16 for a bowl of seasoned lettuce. One of our desserts, the cheesecake was inedible and not at all fresh so we sent it back and weren’t charged for it. I will never eat there again- it was a very expensive disappointment.

Fairly good place for a quick drink

Service - an arrogant person will kill your business. The man behind the bar - not sure what was going on with him but lighten up. Once you step on that floor - you are on the stage and you get paid. Food - even 9 year old always hungry refused to eat the burger. Atmosphere- chilled clients drinking beer.

Much improved vegan options. I had the roast cauliflower thai green curry, which was fabulously tasty!

Just been to The Bald faced Stag this evening and was served by a tall young guy who was obnoxious!!! He poured my Prosecco using a wine measure (which is wrong on every level) and absolutely no need to do so as it’s highly priced...

Was looking forward to eating here after a long time. Waitress and waiter both charming and affable. I ordered Caesar Salad with Lettuce & Broccoli but was given a plate with lettuce & broccoli... nothing more...no anchovies, croutons, nothing...price £15,50!!! I pointed this out to the waitress and she said "that was how they did the Caesar salad!" I asked to speak to the manager but he sent a waiter with the same message. I DEMANDED to speak to the manager and eventually a poker-faced gentleman, the 'supervisor' came to tell me what I had was exactly what was written on the menu. If I didn't like it he would give me a free drink, whereupon he aggressively snatched away my plate! Incensed, we walked out of the restaurant! Never done that before. I asked the 'supervisor for his name but he declined to give it. Total rip-off restaurant with aggressive, and unpleasant supervisor who should be fired! Pity, we had many nice times there pre-Covid....

This was such a disappointment. I took my friends and family there and I’m not sure I’ll ever be back. The staff was rude from the beginning. I tried to speak to someone at the cashier when we came in who ignored me. We got seated and ordered. My friend’s order got messed up. We paid and they didn’t discount their mistake. As soon as we paid one of our chairs broke. They apologised and said that given we had already paid they could give us something for free. How terrible - I would’ve wanted a refund but that never occurred to them as an option to offer of course. I waited but nobody came to ask for my details to file an accident report so again had to call the staff to say it was a legal requirement to do so and they needed to do it. The person wanted me to email the pub to get a copy of the report - can you believe it? That’s when I said “no, you email me”. Was the very least they could do. In the end I got emailed a screenshot of a page and I cannot even see if the report was really submitted. How sad. Could’ve been an elderly or someone with a disability on that chair. All in all unsafe place and rude staff. Do not recommend.

The food was poor. Half the menu was not available. The service was slow and inattentive, even though the restaurant was almost empty. The bill was ridiculously expensive for what was served. We will not be returning.

So annoyed we ended up going. 3 people warned me not to because of the long wait and staff. I thought I’d give it a go myself but wish I had listened. The website says serves food all day but the kitchen is closed between 3-5. The waiter kept saying ‘yes but obviously our chefs need a break’, which I agree with but we booked because we thought we could get food before a concert. Our friends food came out in 45 mins, they had two starter dishes so surprised they even took that long, it then took a further 20 minutes until I asked if ours would be much longer. We ordered a veggie ribs dish. When it finally arrived they told us they didn’t have any of the ribs unfortunately so we were served a couple sliced of pitta, tomato paste, jalapeños and around 6 small pieces of cauliflower - for £18.50. Why it took so long to tell us the main ingredient of what we ordered wasn’t available is beyond me. I sent it back and said sorry I don’t want to pay for that. The waiter was so strange and kept saying ‘yep alright dont shoot the messenger’. Overall shocked with the general attitude of the staff (other than one lady at the bar who was the most pleasant), they just treated us like we had really put them out and our custom was unwelcome. I hope they get new caring and warm owners that care about food and the community because the building and position is amazing. But don’t be fooled and don’t waste your time. It will put you in a bad mood.

Unfortunately our experience was poor, from start to finish . Booking on line was fine - although there was no description of what the snug area consisted of. Our waitress was obviously very new, and inexperienced. No knowledge of the available beers and simply provided a wine list. Lovely personality - friendly and kind but had been inadequately briefed as to what wasn't available. Finally, for a gastro pub situated in a high street to have run out of normal milk was disappointing, and prevented us enjoying a coffee with normal milk, although we were offered alternative milk of vegetable origin . Various items on the menu unavailable . The food itself was disappointing - bland ,stodgy and tasteless tortellini - badly cooked, and a pan fried sea bass - fried until crispy all the way through. Despite being offered the desert menu X2 it never materialised - we finally needed to ask for it. I should point out that the duty manager did acknowledge the unavailability of products, and deducted the cost of 2 drinks .

Why is the woman who works there so miserable? Serving someone a pint seems to be beneath her. If I walk in and see she's "working" I turn around and go to N. E. Other pub in the area. She's a liability. Other bar staff are fine.

The food was distinctly average and did not reflect the menu on the website. Very small choice. The porchetta was very tough. The roast potatoes were greasy, not crispy as promised by the serving staff. The non alcoholic apple and ginger drink was tasteless. The...

The menu looks great, the staff are lovely, but disappointingly the menu and reality don't always align. Even on a quiet Sunday the vegan wellington isn't available, and we're starting to think it might not exist. The vegan burger was alright.

10 out of 10 in all aspects, we had such a good time in that gem of a pub. We will be back to celebrate again. And thank to Gerard for accomodating us in such a busy night!

Good relaxed feel and the bonus of a live performer

We had a fantastic time with our 50 guests at the Bald Faced Stag. We booked our own area and pre-ordered buffet-style food for everyone, which was delicious! The venue, food, atmosphere and staff were all great. Would highly recommend.

Food was poor and either served cold or raw. Service was also slow 🐌 😒. Sadly not the birthday celebrations we had hoped for as previous visits were outstanding.

The best thing was when the live jazz started which was lovely! The food was below standard. Mean amount of vegetables, greasy roast potatoes. Beef was OK. Huge Yorkshire pudding covered a multitude of sins!

Visited this past Friday night, very friendly staff and had a great evening - will return again for sure when i'm next in the area.

i enjoyed my evening alot on Aug 19th (now its 4th Sept) with my friend, we ate the burger, good beer, amazing live singer. However, sorry to piss on the pubs fire but ive been sent a parking fine for using their pub car park by "Britannia Parking". What on earth did i do wrong by using their "customer parking" lot at the rear? 100GBP fine and threats etc from a private parking company. The car park was about half full with about 5 cars at the time. I will be challenging it but will the pub pay my expenses? Not a great way to treat customers. So I don't recommend parking there! ******************** Update from 1 star to 3. The pub cancelled the parking fine for me. Were very nice etc. I still dont understand how management expect a new visitor to know about registering a car for parking but thats the idea. So for the inconvenience thats why i can only give 3 stars, not 5...cos i wouldnt wish that on anyone. Incidently the food, drink was good and so was ambience etc.

Good little gastro pub in each Finchley, haven't tried the food this time around as was a flying visit.

I come here at least twice a week with my bro. Nice local boozer, wide selection of beers, the chicken and ham pie is a solid choice. Very good service, especially from barmaid Emily

Took my Dad for lunch on a Friday afternoon. Food was okay. We had fish finger sandwiches. The bread was sourdough and because of the presentation of the sandwiches, they were a bit difficult to eat. Decent gastro pub with decent food. The atmosphere is different of course depending on the time and day of the week.

My Partner and I went here for a Sunday roast. We found the root tip of an onion and a large piece of string in our food. It was also really salty. When the manager refunded us we noted that we’d been charged 12.5% service even though we’d ordered from the bar. That meant we’d been charged £6.00 to have two meals and one and a half drinks! I returned a few weeks later to have a roast with a friend. This time I called in advance to check that the service issue was a blip and was informed I wouldn’t be charged service. I again sat in the bar area and ordered at the bar. I asked for a receipt and once again I’d been charged service. The staff made a huge deal in front of the customers waiting when I asked it to be removed which was an embarrassment. Charging people to eat in a dining area is expected, but to try and add service charge to your customers when they are doing the ordering themselves is cheeky, especially when you’re not overt about the fact you are doing it. Very sneaky. I won’t be returning.

Early dinner. Very good service. I found my Thai curry very dry and sweetcorn and cauliflower almost raw. Icecream was delicious. Thursday 2-4-1 applied only to alcoholic cocktails - I don't drink alcohol ☹ so paid full price for one drink.

My Vegetarian Thai Green Curry was very dry. Sweetcorn and Cauluflower were barely cooked. I could not cut/eat them. Only offer of 2-4-1 was on alcoholic cocktails. I don't drink alcohol and had to pay full price for my drink. I used to really like this place.
