We spent two nights at The Cheshire Cheese in Longnor with our dog Laddie. Our room was spacious, warm, and very clean, with a large bathroom, and a very large and comfortable bed. The food quality for both breakfast and dinner was excellent, and way above what we were expecting. The staff were efficient, and very friendly, as was the landlord. Most enjoyable, and a proper dog friendly place, thank you.

A friend and I went to the The Old Cheshire Cheese in Longnor for dinner. We bought some beers, found our table, and after perusing the menu we both ordered ‘Proper Beef Pudding’ with homemade chips. The meal arrived, the chips looked good, peas are peas, but the “Beef Pudding” had certainly never seen a pudding basin. Best described as a rectangular suet parcel stuffed with finely minced something, possibly beef, difficult to be sure. It had that “Factory to Freezer to Microwave to Plate” look about it, and tasted like suet. Thankfully the gravy was lovely, thick dark and tasty, and that saved the day. The Old Cheshire Cheese is an attractive pub, pleasant atmosphere, good beer and friendly staff. I would certainly recommend the place, just avoid the Proper Beef Pudding. Word on the street is that they produce an excellent Sunday Dinner, which I’m sure they do.

Went for an evening meal after a long day hiking. Greeted on arrival by polite young man and shown to a table. The restaurant was full but there was plenty of space between tables. The food is genuinely home cooked, with proper chips like my Dad used to make. Waiting staff were both lovely, Had a lovely meal and wouldn’t hesitate to go back.

I stayed here for its convenient location whilst on business close by. I received a wonderfully warm welcome by the landlady who also booked me in for dinner. The room was nicely appointed and very comfortable. Bathroom was spacious too. Exceptionally clean. The bar has a wide range of beers and ales and a thoughtfully broad food menu. I had the beef stroganoff which was, without doubt, the best i’ve ever had. It made me sad that I wouldn’t be back here again for a good while. Then I had the black forest roulade and this left me inconsolable. It was that good. Bed was comfortable, breakfast was just as good as dinner. I’ll definitely be back.

Lovely pub, great staff, good food. Only issue is the table reservation system . If someone books a table, it’s seems the table is out of action for the night, so if you just walk in, no tables are free, but no one sits at them, well they didn’t in the two hours they were there. All very odd. Table issues a shame as it’s a great place, just not really a drop In place .

We visit Lognor each year and were delighted that Ye Old Cheshire Cheese had opened for our annual weekend away. We received a warm welcome in the newly refurbished pub. A good range of drinks available and the food is fabulous. We went for Sunday lunch and all enjoyed our dishes. Notable menu items included the Sunday roast and homemade beef pudding. Super generous portions, homemade food, all served with a smile!

We went to the pub in order to eat. Now I’ll admit we didn’t check times but just attended. At 19.25hrs I tried to order food but was told the kitchen was closed. Ok fair enough I thought. Until I was walking past a table who were only just ordering. Not only that when I asked about other places to eat nearby the barmaid was very offhand to the point of being rude.

3rd time lucky or so we thought! 1st visit we couldn’t get booked for food as apparently fully booked for the evening so we thought it must be good. Had drinks and left for our walk. We popped in for drinks and booked for Sunday lunch the next day we could’ve picked any time but as making the most of our holiday thought the later the better so booked fir4.30 however when we came to order they had ran out of Sunday roasts. We ordered real beef pudding and a steak and kidney pie. Disappointed that you could only have chips and peas with most of the other meals on the menu. Anyway too late to go anywhere else. The real beef pudding was in fact mince and the steak and kidney pie didn’t have any kidney in just kidney flavoured gravy. There was 3 very small peices of poor steak. The pastry was spongy like it had been microwaved on the plate along with the dry peas and the chips were poor old potatoes with no taste whatsoever. All in all substandard quality. I won’t recommend this pub for food to anyone who visits. Nice little spot for a drink though.

Beautiful country food with excellent service and food. Good value for money, would definitely recommend. Sunday roast was superb. Visited as a family of 6 with a new born baby in tow. We all had Sunday roasts, beef (cooked as requested), lamb and turkey, all the trimming and all super. Portions were large, but some of us did find room for dessert, would recommend the honeycomb cheesecake. The service was lovely, staff very friendly and helped find the baby changing facilities. The decor inside was traditional and comfy, great to see a roaring fire on a dank day. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Well done.

The renovations are nice. Service is good and staff friendly but I was let down by the food. Veggie burger clearly came out of a box in the freezer and the garlic prawn starter was just a bowl of 5/6 prawns swimming in oil. Not a patch on the food served at the neighbouring Pack Horse Inn I’m afraid which is also a lot cheaper.

Pre booked our table for Saturday 21st October. We had been so looking forward to visiting this pub after it being closed down when we visited the village last year at the same time. The wait was so worth it. The pub itself is so cosy and warm and has been refurbished, but keeping all the traditional features. Still has the nice open fires. We spent a good six and a half hours in total in the pub, eating and drinking. There were 4 of us and we all had a 3 course meal over the period of those hours. Between us we had the starters of pate, salt and pepper chicken and the broccoli and Stilton soup…. All tasty and no complaints. For the mains we had the chilli, gammon steak and steak pudding, again all hot, all tasty and no complaints. Desserts were the apple pie with custard and the lemon roulade with cream….yum. All decent sized and all reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly, helpful and one chap went above and beyond his role and for this we are eternally grateful. I won’t say why on here but he knows what he did 😄 THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU. We have booked to return to Longnor Wood holiday park for this time again next year and will not be hesitating in returning back to this pub. You really are a credit to the village.

It’s great to have the pub open again in Longnor, and all credit to Robinson’s for an excellent refurb. I hope the pub thrives. Unfortunately I have issues with the food being served. I’ve eaten there a few times now and the quality of the food is not very good. I’ve had a chicken madras with cold pieces of chicken in a warm sauce. Clearly cold cooked chicken covered in pre prepared sauce. The steak pie is a meat sauce capped with a separately cooked puff pastry cap. Is this even a real pie? How this be served with hot chips, peas and pastry, but lukewarm steak sauce? The pieces of steak in this are chewy and tough. I have questioned the staff about the cooking and been told the food is home cooked. However there is also the admission that some so frozen and a microwave used. Unfortunately who ever is doing the “cooking” does not seem to be able to use a microwave properly. Serving customers lukewarm food at £14 a pop does not work for me. I won’t be eating here again until there a more competent cook in the kitchen. A pint and a packet of crisps from now on!

We decided to try the Cheshire Cheese as we knew it had recently been refurbished and enjoyed our meal of lambs liver and "the sizzler" so much that we returned a few days later. This time we had the 2 sirloin steaks and a bottle of wine deal for £45 which was amazing value, and the steaks were amongst the best we have ever had - perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. They have made a great job of the refurbishment and on the two evenings that we visited they were extremely busy. There was a bit of a wait for the food, but it was definitely worth waiting for. Looking forward to our next visit.

Very nice pub, the refurbishment has been very well executed. We visited on a Saturday night without a reservation and got a table even though the place appeared to be busy. The well priced food from a reasonably basic menu was good and the service was quick so not much to complain about there, if that’s what you looking for. Disappointed that the bar didn’t have a larger selection of real ale, but the Trooper was okay pint.

Booked via email in advance as we were staying locally. Arrived to find that no booking had been made a suggestion that maybe I had booked a table at another pub with the same name. I referred to the name that had emailed with the booking and got an insincere comment that it was the right place but there was a table we could have. Walked through a nice lounge area (relatively empty) with comfy looking chairs and was placed in a back room with wooden chairs by ourselves out of the way. Was offered ‘carvery’ with a choice of four meats. Waitress came to take order who then said that the choice of meats we would like wasn’t available. Our meals arrived, 2 adult and 2 children roasts, not a ‘carvery’ at all but assume that’s perhaps relating to Covid measures although that wasn’t made clear?! Meals were the same size except for an extra slice of meat on the adults. Roast ‘gammon’ was just warmed up ham which was probably left over from the 2 for £10 menu. Waitress disappeared and we realised our roasts were missing Yorkshire puddings. Eventually waitress reappeared and I asked for the Yorkshires, she just shrugged her shoulders and said we should have them. The next thing the chef appeared from the kitchen and asked if we still wanted them. I said that we did so four cold Yorkshire’s appeared on a plate. The food was swimming in gravy. Overall the food tasted ok but was luke warm. The waitress didn’t bother to ask if everything was ok with the food until she came to clear the plates. As we had promised the kids a pudding we ordered some. Part of the pudding order was two tiramisu. I have never seen anything like it in my life. Separated soggy sponge literally drowning in watery cold coffee (See photo). My son refused to eat his so we asked if his could be changed for a brownie. It was very clear that the staff were not at all interested in welcoming people to the pub and they were just there to serve the locals. The man behind the bar (presumably landlord) couldn’t even lift his head to acknowledge us. Very disappointing and a completely different vibe to other pubs we have visited in the local area who couldn’t have made us more welcome. A very disappointing Sunday lunch which we had been looking forward to. Covid measures wise, plenty of signs and sanitiser everywhere. A one way system that not many people seemed to follow and no track and trace details were requested.

Covid 19:- preparation looked good at first, with a mostly one way system. The bar had some screens but big gaps open to the public. Plenty of hand sanitizer on all tables and track and trace forms. However, staff did not wear masks or gloves, and got too close when serving food.Food:- the coffee tasted like instant not filter, the tea was luke warm. Thethe food when it arrived was hot. The pie I had was tasty but had some gristle in it. The veg and curry was good. The chips though, oh goodness, they were definitely undercooked and needed frying for longer.Overall, a hit and miss visit.

We stopped locally and the pub looked great and is clean. Does allow dogs and we sat outside. Staff were quite disinterested in helping and not overly friendly to visitors. Requested a ploughmans and not at all like one of pictures on here, it was a bag of salad tipped on a plate and lots of small plum tomatoes. No dressing. I did ask if instead of a selection of cheese I could have cheddar to which the owner/cook (?) was quite rude saying I should have something else which I replied I wouldn't bother. Then did mutter would do it and then did bring out this 'dish' and wished I hadn't had anything. Patronising with what a ploughmans is but advised have eaten them for years across the country and never had an issue before. My friend left her burger as not pleasant. Female bar person also abrupt at the bar, may be better to the locals!? Did not go back here again.

We ate here one night while camping at Pomeroy. (I did not like the drive to get here, there is a very windy steep road!) As a group of 7 we had to sit over two tables, which wasn’t really an issue, as this was explained to us when we arrived. Each table had its own bottle of hand sanitiser which was good to see and despite the Covid rules there was still a very nice atmosphere, compared with where we had eaten the previous evening. Service was good, and we were served our food and drink by the staff at the table, again very different to the previous evening. Unfortunately for me there were very few gluten free main meal options in this pub, which was a little disappointing. However the staff were very accommodating especially when I forgot to ask for my sons meal to arrive with the starters, and they were able to cook this straight away for him. Overall we were happy with our meal (disappointed that it wasn’t part of the eat out scheme) it was just a little pricey.

Staffordshire's most northerly village is the delightful Longnor with such lovely views and charm it is well worth a visit.Abbie served us with charm and delight and her expertise at pouring the drinks was impreesive. No need to ask them to 'Top Up' here.Food and service great and toilets immaculate.Need to improve their external flowers and the weeds needed sorting but otherwise a delight.

Odd vibe, apart from one really lovely young waitress, the rest of the staff came across as quite disinterested and not the friendliest (unless you're local). We only ate here once, we were staying at their Inn across the road (which I also strongly don't recommend) and apart from buying a bottle of wine to take back to the room one evening we avoided eating or drinking here again. They do allow dogs though, Which is great, it's an easy stop if you're in the area walking too. The food portions are really generous, which is always appreciated - you won't leave hungry... but the quality of the food isn't great, so you will leave dissatisfied. Nachos were rather cold and not very cheesy, the battered chicken on the burger was very oily, the oil was probably not hot enough to avoid the batter becoming saturated. We are naturally a bit more critical as we're in the industry, so if you're not fussy you probably won't care. I'd suggest having something from the fish and chip shop (which was lovely) or merchants house kitchen, which is great! They also aren't particularly very concerned with hygiene, lipstick marks on glasses, greasy plates and dirty mugs are their specialty. (We experienced a lot of their crockery staying at the Inn).

Nice pub in the middle of Long or. Good size car park at the rear along with outside seating front and rear.We visited in the afternoon just as covid19 started it had already made an impact to their custom. This is a really lovely village pub, old fashioned and cosy. Well worth a visit for sure. Beer very well kept.

We were staying in the village and popped in to eat on Thursday 2nd Jan, only to be told that they were only serving food for pre-booked parties. The fish and chip shop was closed for re-decoration and the Merchant's House was also closed so a trip to Buxton was required. Maybe we'll have better luck another time?

We visited this pub on 3 occasions while staying in the local area. The first we arrived at 8pm hoping for dinner to be told there wasn't any food left unless we were staying on site (we wasn't)... we left and went to Merchants Bar instead. The second time we went at 5.30pm for a drink and they'd run out of white wine and lemons/limes for a gin & tonic. No biggy but it's basics, surely?!The third time we went for band night. Better stocked bar overall but had to reuse the same glass all night as they'd run out of gin glasses.Overall, okay place for a drink but slightly odd feel to it unless you're a local and we certainly didn't feel enticed to try again for dinner, although the pictures on Trip Advisor look nice to be fair!

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at this little Gem.Log fires burning, cosy rooms and wonderful food. Zoe and Matt who run this place are amazing, friendly and would do anything to help. We blew a tyre whilst there and Matt assisted by helping us remove the tyre and taking us to Buxton to get a replacement.Had lovely meals here from suet pudding, steaks to fish and chips truly wonderful place to stay. All the locals made us feel welcome and we cannot wait to return to see them all. We have already re booked for November. If your staying in the village or passing through please pop in you won’t be disappointed dogs welcome too.

Fabulous food, all freshly cooked, amazing oatcakes, breakfasts, omelettes and much more. Very reasonably priced, the only place I know where you can set a coffee under £2. Brilliant

We booked in on the tea for two. I called back a few days later to ask for my tea for two to be gluten free (I'm Ceoliac) The receptionist informed me that my meal would be an extra £5. I have never been charged extra for an allergy. Having a gluten intolerance is a disease, wonder if you're charged extra for a vegan option? I won't be visiting. I cancelled the tea. Warning to all other sufferers, go somewhere else.
