1) The cheeks to charge for WATER! 2) Carvery supposedly starts at 12, we came in at 12 and had to wait until a table of 10 got their food before us. We ended up waiting until 13:20 to get our food. Pub clearly isn't run correctly. Not to mention we got the smallest amount of meat on our carveries. Not coming here for a family meal again. *Edit* response to owner's comment: 1) you have to let your customers know you are charging for water OR give them the choice of free tap water. Common sense. 2) we came at 12... the food should have been ready at 12 not 1. And no, you were not in the process of topping the veg up because no one had had their carveries until 1. I am a regular at this pub and I enjoy coming here but today I was disappointed. Especially after hearing that the staff member who served me was bad mouthing about me to customers sat at the bar.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. The front of the pub might need some maintenance but once you’re inside, you’ll find a cosy, family-run pub with lovely, attentive staff and great views of the surrounding countryside. The Sunday carvery is generous with a variety of meats and a vegetarian option. There are also other non carvery options if you fancy something different. Overall an authentic choice for a quaint Sunday lunch!

I had booked a table of 9 with a high chair for grandads birthday approx 4 days before. My other son had finished a 12 hour shift for one of the emergency services and met us on the carpark to pick his son up. When we got there he said he would come in with us to see if he could stay too. We asked and the restaurant director said no as he could accommodate and fit another table in. However when he showed us the table there was a long table of 8 and a round table added on at the end with 2 chairs and a high chair totalling 10 plus high chair there fore again we asked that we would need just one chair to be added in whereby there was plenty of room on the end for the child. He blatantly disgauarded this saying he couldn't accommodate. FUMMING TO SAY THE LEAST by all of us. We sat down absolutely annoyed, if we hadn't got the young children who were hungry and looking forward to celebrating grandads birthday WE CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE WALKED OUT. ,TO add insult to injury another couple were on a table at the bottom of us next to the window and left before we had ordered, leaving even MORE ROOM . THE WHOLE EPISODE WAS UNBELIEVABLE. so my son and grandson travelled back home taking 2 hours before he got home. My daughter in law also had sickness and diahorrea following her meal too. I AM FUMING STILL FROM THIS, THERE WAS NO NEGOTIATING IT WAS A CLEAR NO FULL STOP. A VERY UNHAPPY CUSTOMER .

Turned away for food, by barman, bar was empty plenty of tables. You would think they need the business with the NI increase coming and reduction in business rates relief. The excuse was the restaurant was busy for carvery.

Average food, poorly run pub rude owners and managers also over heard a few barstaff complain about under paid wages which doesn’t make it feel like a warm welcoming pub to attend for food, I have been on a couple of occasions and had the exact same experience, also unhappy staff

Attention to detail - this review reflects my last 5 visits to the Cow under current ownership, I live on the Ash Bank so very close to me used it for many years, lovely food by the new guys but every time I visit you order a premium steak they never have it, rib eye on the last menu and ask for a fillet tonight and out of 5 visits they don’t have it, you ask to swap garden peas for mushy got it 1 times out of 5, sounds picky but there you go, on the whole lovely home cooked food will continue to go just a little extra care and serve what you advertise it would be great, you need to go local or you lose it we don’t want a closed sign on there again

I was surprised by how quiet the place was at 1 on a Saturday afternoon, but I know it has only recently reopened. The food was lovely with healthy portions , a special mention for the beef in the pies as this was top notch. The young waitress was really attentive, but I suspect with little experience. Something she will get with more time. Overall, we will be coming back again soon, and I'll definitely have one of those pies.

Was really excited to go here tonight as I haven't been in years and it was always lovely. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for tonight. Table booked for half 6, left at 8:50. For the first hour and a half there was only one waitress working in the restaurant completely ran off her feet. She was absolutely lovely and did keep apologising for the wait and nothing she did was wrong in any way. We waited 45 minutes just for our starters, another 35 minutes after this got our mains, and then another 30 minutes after this for our deserts. I've never spent so long in a restaurant. Not only did the food take forever, but the restaurant wasn't the cleanest and needs a revamp really. Sticky tables, the skirting board fell off next to us, and on one of the wooden beams there was a snail/slug trail on it. I won't even start on the toilets... It's a real shame as the food was actually quite nice. We felt incredibly sorry for the young waitress for being left alone for the busy part of the night. She was also crying at one point as she said the chef had been nasty to her all night and called her names. We could hear arguing from the kitchen when this had happened, and this was also talked about amungst staff in the restaurant area where customers could here which wasn't professional. At one point a male staff member helped the young waitress move some tables to which he dragged them and made such a noise. The waitress asked him not to do this as the customers do not want to hear this, however he ignored her and continued to do so anyway. Again the waitress apologised to thr customers for this despite another thing not being her fault. I really hope the owners give the young waitress some credit and appreciation, as she did everything she was meant to do and couldn't apologise enough to us and other guests for the service we all received. It's safe to say we won't be returning but I really hope things improve to become the restaurant it used to be, and so hopefully the young waitress will not be put in such a position again.

Went at lunchtime for the 2 courses for £10.99. (Monday to Friday only) Had the Prawn Cocktail for starter. It was Good with plenty of prawns in a nice cocktail sauce and came with brown bread & butter. Not much lettuce but prawn portion was Good. For main I had the Steak & Ale Pie. This was lovely, tender lean meat (sort of shredded and cooked down) in a flavoursome gravy. The meat was a Good portion and came with a puff pastry lid. The meat portion was loose on the plate and not in a separate dish. The meal came with lovely homemade chips and properly cooked peas. I enjoyed my food and thought it was filling and Good value. Service was Good and the conservatory area was fairly busy with diners. Since discovered by reading the menu carefully after the event that the Pie comes with a jug of gravy but I did not get that!! Still Good though. I recommend the food at the Red Cow! Update for 2nd visit eating exactly the same meal! Prawn cocktail was even better with plenty of lettuce and the prawns were in a tasty cocktail sauce. Steak & ale Pie was the main meal. Chips and gravy were better than the first time with great flavour, but the pie meat portion (ie the number of chunks of meat) was sadly a fair bit smaller than first time around. Pie pastry lid tasted nice again. Peas not so good second time around but okay. Update, 3rd Visit: Everything was perfect and delicious with good portions! All beautifully prepared, cooked and presented. I had the same food again, Prawn Cocktail and Steak Pie. I'm hooked now, LOL

Overall experience was fine, not enough to rush back, starters were amazing (goujons and garlic mushrooms) mains were just substandard… normal pub chain grub rather than a standalone like it is… one waitress was very attentive but the child’s meal still came out late and in parts 👀 the second waitress had a potty mouth every time she entered or left the kitchen … all within very close range to our table, with our child on….

We hadn't booked to go here. When we entered the pub and asked if we could eat here, we were told by the barmaid to wait, and she would go and find out. We called on a Sunday for lunch, 2 of us had the Sunday set meal and the other had a Cassian Chicken lunch. We asked for two glasses and a jug of tap water, one of the glasses came covered with lipstick so that had to be changed. The meals all arrived together and they were all hot, everyone enjoyed their meals and two of us had afters and they were also very nice. While we were eating we were a little upset at how the tables were cleaned, they came with a spray bottle sprayed what ever over the table and that was also coming onto our table. This was left 20 mins then they wiped the table top but did not wipe the salt or pepper that had been sprayed also, I would say they need a little training in cleaning and preparing the table for the next guest I say this after watching them place the knives and forks touching the ends of each item. This spoilt our experience at this establishment but will say the food was lovely.

We went for Burger Night. Any two burgers for £20. Because of a reduced menu as the pub is closing in SIX weeks time we had the American burger, one meat and the other customised veggie. The portion size is massive and you get two burger patties per person. We were properly well fed, but both of us could not completely finish our meals. The deal is great value. As a meat-eater I felt the burger patties were a bit below par in terms of quality and taste. However, both of us agreed it was a great feed!!!

Excellent food ordered the American burger was the best burger I've ever had and portions are massive, I'm a big eater but this caught me off guard only just managed to finish it. Also really nice friendly staff was just a bit quite for a Friday night.

Although we live very close we hadn't been here for ages, but we have been twice recently and have been impressed with both the friendly service and the excellent food. I just don't get people's gripes about "tired decor"------it,s perfectly pleasant and cosy. The pie night on a Tuesday is probably the best in the Potteries! Will definitely go again and can't wait to try the tapas.

Went with a friend this evening. 2 courses for 12.95. We both had garlic mushrooms with a slice of ciabbata to start. Possibly one of the best mushroom starters I have ever had. Then homemade lasagne. Service was excellent and not long to wait for the food. Will definitely be back

The pub is nice but needs updating. As soon as we walked in all we heard from the gentlemen chatting at the bar was the f word and other profanities. We were going to meet my 83 year old mum and her husband but I swiftly changed our plans, no way could I have sat there with them. The bar staff were ok but more interested with chatting with the blokes at the bar. My husband's food was decent. My chips were delicious but the steak, onion and rocket sandwich was vile, I barely ate it, maybe I misread the menu but it seemed to have some sort of disgusting pesto on it. The bar staff were that bothered they took away my barely eaten plate without a question. Shame, would like to go back to try a proper meal in the evening, in the restaurant, without the profanities. Please understand, I am a mental health nurse and can swear with the best of them, but there is a place and a time.

One of the best Sunday lunches we've ever eaten. The starters were quality and just enough, and the main course was beautiful. We both had sirloin beef which was cooked perfectly as were the fresh vegetables. We'll definitely be back 👍😊

Been a few times now and the food is always excellent. Proper pies - not slices off a large one or (God forbid) a stew with a puff pastry lid. Also had the sea bass (excellent) and the Japanese one but that seems to have been taken off now. My wife is veggie and has had the pie, burger and Moroccan stew (which unfortunately has also been taken off - a pity as it was really nice). Very good value for money, fantastic chef & great service.

Fabulous food, all freshly cooked, amazing oatcakes, breakfasts, omelettes and much more. Very reasonably priced, the only place I know where you can set a coffee under £2. Brilliant
