That moment when you try to check in and find you're a hindrance rather than a paying customer ouch. Never been checked by such a disinterested soul. This place is in dire need of TLC. It's such a shame as it could be such a magical, special place. Not to be totally unfair the sheets and towels were spotless and the water was piping hot. Every bit of the room was neglected. Cobwebs, crumbs and hairs all over the floor, broken bath panel, dodgy secretions on the bathroom walls, thick dust on light fittings, light pull cord caked in grime. There is no sound insulation between the bar and the room but in all fairness this stopped at 11.30. Weirdest thing I did have a lovely sleep, work that one out! Best tip, take earplugs, slippers as no way would you want your bare feet on that floor and don't even bother at being pleasant with the check in lady. Also Shrewsbury is pretty cool and there are some absobloodyamazingpubs and restaurants.

The staff were friendly and helpful, the location good and you could park. The room was well equipped (iron, hair dryer tram and coffee etc) and warm. The room was clean but the towel rail was hanging off the wall as was one of the wall hooks for the curtains. The toilet flush was temperamental and the shower a bit weak. We couldn’t open any window so it was stuffy and the condensation was terrible. The room was over the bar so it was very noisy if you were in your room before closing time. The floorboards were also very loud! The room was £55 so if you keep this in mind then it is an ok base, however it was a bit too rough and ready for me so next time I would pay more and go elsewhere.

A limited menu and dated decor, but the staff here were helpful and efficient. It was almost a "what do you want with your chips" scenario, but for less than £10 each, it was OK. The food arrived promptly and was well-presented, so good, basic stuff.

So few pubs about like this. Authentic atmosphere of the old pub style where food is secondary to popping out for a drink and you’re not automatically asked if you want the menu food. Food very good value and basic, solid fayre. It’s a winner

My husband and I came here as we booked the Sabrina boat ride and had a meal included at this pub. The food was delicious and plentiful, can't fault it for that. However, I felt like I was sat in the 80's era. Very outdated place and in desperate need of modernisation. The toilets we're alot to be desired with no loo roll so had to ask for some. Also, the customer service was dyer. The landlord didn't even take our name for the boat booking and didn't pay attention to us at all. The bar staff were friendly but the waiting on staff were rude and forgetful. I personally wouldn't come here again out of choice. Shame really, as the food is the only reason I gave it 3 stars.

Lovely Sunday roast can't fault it. They were a bit busy so had to wait a long time for meal. But it was worth it in the end. Best Sunday roast we've had ever!!! 5 veg choice of meats sausage stuffing Yorkshire pudd boiled pots roasts pot a parsnips. All hot and streaming mmmmm Was told by a local that not that slow usually but it was Easter Sunday after all.

My son took mom and I for a ride after Christmas, the pub we had chosen was not serving food, so glad, we really enjoyed our lunch here. It would have been five stars but the menu was very limited and my sons pate came with a very small piece of toast, not enough for the amount of pate, my mom had lasagne, loved it, and my daughter-in-law and I had beef bourguignon, with home made chips, delicious. But best of all my dog was made very welcome, definitely will come here again and would recommend it my friends

I have passed this pub so many times & have never gone inside & today was the day! My friend & I were in desperate need of a sit down & a coffee after a rather adventurous morning exploring the nearby Darwin House & steep gardens! We popped our heads round the door to ask if they served coffee/tea which a friendly bar maid assured us they did. She brought us tea & coffee attractively served on a tray along with a mint each! The building was a 17th century Coaching Inn. There were many really old photos of the locality around the pub. We were invited to look at them all. I have attached a couple. The pub does B& B as well as meals. There is parking & a beer garden round the back. I am glad I finally paid a visit!

As locals we have been visiting The Buck's Head for a long time and rate the beer, the staff and the historic building highly, but can't something be done about the smell of cooking fat that permeates the whole place? It spoils it increasingly for us and we wonder whether it does for anybody else. It's been the same for years, through management changes, and I suspect the smell may now lie deep in the upholstery and the curtains. It certainly does in the clothes we were wearing yesterday! Might it be worth investing in a deep clean of the bar and a more powerful extractor in the kitchen? Just saying, like!

Passed by several times and always said I must try that place one of these days. Well I should have made the effort earlier. We enjoyed a very good pre-theatre dinner which could not be faulted, the quality and quantity were excellent. Home made chips too. In fact the portions were too generous resulting in no room for a dessert. Whilst the building may be somewhat aged it is both clean and pleasant assisted too by helpful and attentive staff. The bar area is well used by the local residents which is always a positive sign.

This is a lovely old coaching inn that has a few rooms for b+b. Externally the property is very photogenic and has great curbside appeal. To some extent this lessens upon entering but it is a warm cosy environment that possibly needs a litle TLC around the edges?? Not an extensive menu but true home cooked food. Warm welcome and efficient service. Very reasonable prices.

We always try to stay in Ye Olde Bucks Head when we visit Shrewsbury (usually when travelling home from North Wales) and have for 10 years. The bedrooms are nicely decorated if a little cramped but fine for a 1 or 2 night stay. Time to renovate the bathrooms though. Breakfast (in the bar) is excellent.

Not been here before. Stopped off on the way back from holiday in Wales. Party of six plus 3 dogs. Parking at rear of pub. A warm welcome on entry. Nice pub with lots of character. We hadn't booked and we were only expecting pub food but what a surprise. Really lovely. Beer was excellent with plenty of choice. I went for a pint of Salopian Ale which was well kept and the right temperature for a change. The food was cracking. 3 burgers, 1 madras curry, 1 ham, egg and chips and 1 rib eye. Every dish was excellent. Total bill £77 including dinks. WHAT I HERE YOU SAY??? Yes, you read right £77. Go. Try it. You'll like it. Hooray for tripadvisor

I was staying with a group of friends in Shrewsbury and booked Sunday lunch at Ye Old Bucks Head inn after scouring reviews and wanting somewhere that wasn't excessively expensive. Was pleasantly surprised with the cosy traditional feel of the place and the cheese, crackers and pickles on the bar was a nice touch that many places no longer do.Lunch was very tasty - good thick gravy and plenty of veg to go around. I went for the lamb which was beautifully cooked. The vegetarian in our group was slightly disappointed that there was no Sunday roast replacement and was offered a risotto but opted to have the roast without the meat instead - the option of a nut roast or similar would have made it but they did have veggie gravy so she was happy with that. Only other downside was the carpark is rather tight so we opted to park a little down the road. All in all a great little pub and good value for money.

I had several meals at the Pub from burgers to breaded fish and curries. They were all excellent!! The baked potato melted in my mouth and the crisps were savory. The portions are generous. The burger was loaded and had various sauces to add. The Currie gravy was heavenly and I don't generally get gravy. The prawn salad had a secret sauce which everyone seems to love. The meat was always tender and tasty. The menu is so varied there is something for everyone.

We visited yesterday meeting up with a couple of MrD's old school friends. This is a cosy traditional pub. The car park was full and so we parked on a side street further up the road. Our table was in the window and very comfortable. They only serve roasts on a Sunday but we had a choice of pork, Turkey, lamb or ham. Between our group of 9 we had them all and everyone was very impressed. Each was served with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and parsnips and a generous selection of vegetables. Pudding choice was eton mess, fruit crumble and sticky toffee pudding. Again we had them all between us and again they were delicious. They serve a great range of beers and the wine was nice too! The value was amazing - I think two courses were £7 something. We loved it and will certainly be back when we are next in the area.

I'm a great believer in reviewing a place based on what it says it is, not simply reviewing or comparing it to others that set their "stalls" out differently. This is a very old and traditional building setting itself out as a good honest local pub, with rooms, real ale and simple but tasty & good value food choices - and that is exactly what you get. Indeed we shall be booking another table here within the week for a return visit in the near future.

On the hottest day of the year, during a day trip to Shrewsbury, we visited this pub, having found it online as a dog friendly pub. We weren't disappointed. The staff were welcoming and introduced us to their secluded garden, which was perfect for letting Max off his lead for a while. They were even tolerant of his need to bark at anyone coming into the garden! They served us with smiles and brought us tasty food chosen from a varied menu, which we ate in the welcome shade of the trees. They also have a decked area which gives a good view of the area. Definitely worth a visit.
