Unfriendliest, nastiest bar maid I have ever encountered, choice of craft beers to choose from with a sign on the bar if you can not decide which one you would like try before you by. Great service from James and the rest of the bar staff, lovely, friendly atmosphere in the bar where dogs are also allowed, roaring fire, superbly well kept beer and a proper steak and kidney pie - I couldn't ask for any more. My kind of pub and I'll definitely make a diversion to visit it again.

Been coming to Upton for a while now and this is the first time we have eaten in the anchor, the food was fantastic, lovely warm and friendly atmosphere and always lovely and warm and inviting thanks to the traditional fire. James is the star of the place and I’m sure he could easily sell anything to anyone 😁 with his quick wit and funny sayings. All staff are extremely professional and always willing to help. We will be returning very soon.

I visit the anchor regularly with my friend and our dogs and it never fails to disappoint whether lunch or dinner! A cozy fire awaits to take off the chill and the meals are always perfectly prepared! My friend has the jacket potato which is served with a lovely fresh salad and I usually have the fish and chunky chips which is perfectly cooked every time! The tomato soup today was lovely and creamy with a warm and soft ciabatta! James is well known about town for his cheerful welcome and nay was lovely today too! Two girls behind the bar gave me appalling service, they were surly, rude, wouldn’t speak or even look at me when delivering food and drink to my table, virtually throwing the same down then walking off. Gave me coffee without a saucer. Kept staring at me from behind the bar the whole time I was there which was very unpleasant. I presume this was because the tip I left the last time was not enough in their eyes. I left no tip at all today. They should be made to realise that tips are not obligatory and are given in recognition of excellent service. To be absolutely clear, I am a regular customer and have never received anything other than excellent service until these girls started serving. James, on the other hand, is excellent and makes everybody feel welcome and valued.

We came to this gem of a pub today for lunch. We went through the door and were immediately greeted by one of the friendliest, welcoming chaps’ I think we’ve come across when it comes to being made to feel welcome! - James, a cheery South African guy. We sat down in a lovely little nook, he’d promised reeeeealy good food and we were not disappointed! We had full rack of ribs and the pork belly. It was fabulous as were the accompanying extras in the meal. All the other food that came out for others look lovely too and it was in large amounts!! Throughout, we were asked if we were ok and enjoying our meal. James and Nay Nay make a great team. James is a very happy chap, a great antidote to the grim weather and usual British grump!! Will definitely go back for a Sunday roast. Thanks J & NN 😃😃

My partner and I visited on the busy Folk festival weekend. Upon entering the pub we were greeted by friendly staff and a particularly funny, welcoming and charismatic man named James. He is a genius at his job and his personality shines with everyone there, he was worked off his feet but still made time to chat with the punters AND remembered our names all weekend! We were tempted away from where we had originally planned to eat from James’s enthusiasm for the options on their menu. It DID NOT disappoint!! The food was amazing and then we met the lovely Josh who was serving us all weekend. Again, he was so friendly and funny and helpful, particularly with the vegan options! I have been enjoying Ye Olde Anchor Inn for many years now and am never disappointed. It has the qualities that you look for in a traditional English pub,,,a warm welcome, roaring fire, cosy atmosphere...and nothing is too much trouble. It is a great place to meet friends after a long day, or strike up a conversation with strangers at the bar. Graham in the kitchen always delivers. The waiting staff are attentive and friendly, While James, at the bar, is a larger than life character who makes you feel your custom is valued and gives insightful advice on the regularly changing guest Ales, et al, that keeps me coming back. There is seating out front and in the back so you can hide away or sit out on a sunny day and enjoy the pace of Upton.

Once inside and seated, James' Team looked after us impeccably. Visited for a Spa Day which included Afternoon Tea and decided to stay for dinner too. I have a milk allergy which they catered for extremely well. The Afternoon Tea and Fish and Chips we had for dinner were the best l have ever tried. I do dine out often and this food surpassed my expectations!!! The only let down was the waiter that served us at Dinner. There were two of us dining but he seemed to be oblivious to the fact that I was even there. Whilst serving he seemed to address my friend more which left me somewhat bewildered. At one point he even turned his back to me whilst telling my friend what specials were available! He also poured out my friends drink but did not do the same for me. His behaviour was very odd to say the least and I have never experienced such blatant ignorance before.
