When we ordered our food and drink there were no pleasantries. The pub was not busy but the two other couples there left half their food. We were a bit worried what our food would be like. We had the belly pork and chicken red Thai curry which were both very nice so no complaints there. At no time were we asked if our meal was OK although we were the only ones eating. Staff need to be friendlier and more interested in their customers. Will probably not go again.

We went here a couple of times and was great and friendly until a local with his big dog under very little control bit a little dog… “it doesn’t like little dogs” was the excuse - if you have a small dog I’d stay away! Also the experience was a bit tarred by hearing a member of staff talking to the locals complaining about tourists ordering food… may have been a bad night, but I won’t return (having being a person with a small dog and also a tourist ordering food)!

Disappointed I have been to this pub/restaurant before and had a pleasant welcome But yesterday I was let down the staff mainly a gentleman in cast not sure if new management but he was un called for his rudeness! He was quick to rudely informed my child carrying a drink not to bring a drink into the premises That's fair enough but we came in to see if we wanted to stay, his rudeness totally put us off! Yes she had a drink in hand, but she is a child and his rudeness was scary and un called for there are polite ways to talk to your customers especially children! We did stay and purchased a drink but again one of the waitress came out to court yard and rudely asked a woman feeding her child that food that wasn't purchased wasn't allowed again extremely rude staff and need to learn customer service skills! We had every intention of spending alot of money in this pub yesterday with purchasing food for our whole family but the way the staff were it was totally put us off ever wanting to go here again! It was a complete let down, feel disappointed especially for the other staff members that were polite and friendly!

Had several meals here. The Sunday roast twice which was very nice both times altho the vegetable choice was the same both times. Several of our party did not like the red cabbage side or swede so on visiting the following Sunday they were veg down owing to same on menu again so ordered more roast potatoes at £4-50 i know veg is seasonal but not much option here. Other visits the ham egg and chips ok but egg well over cooked and not runny yoke. More hard boiled. The homemade steak and ale pie. Top quality. No complaints. The first visit I ordered large fish and chips. The fish was very small. It was nice but no way a large after paying extra. Big mistake here. I actually asked my wife if she did order large. She said yes. Next time my son ordered large hand battered cod and chips and I said my fish last time was not large. But he ordered it. It was smaller than mine the previous visit so not happy. Onion rings were awesome. And other meals. Average. Staff friendly enough and service good. Should have complained about size of fish yes. But on holiday and really didn’t want to start complaining. As quality was ok not the quantity Perhaps find another venue next year. Shame as a nice pub and friendly enough staff Were see next year. As we spent alot of money in there shame the fish dish was a major let down

We visited as a family and ordered four main meals, three of which were fine but nothing special. My husband ordered the rump steak and did wonder if it was 10 oz. I wanted fish and chips and there were two options on the main menu, a big and a small. My local does this and the small is a decent sized adults meal whilst the large is very big. I asked about it and this sounded the same from the response I got so I ordered the small but was very disappointed as this was too small to be on the adults menu and belonged on the children’s menu.

Went for our anniversary dinner whilst staying in Shaldon. Service was ok but food wasn't great. Husbands steak was okish , asked for medium but came more well done. I chose the Roast, that was awful. Meat was crispy and dry, potatoes all you could taste was fish on them obviously cooked in same fryer as fish, veg microwaved, watery rubbery, gravy was one lump or two. Was gutted as all the reviews seemed ok which is why we went. Hopefully they were just having an off day.

We were celebrating our anniversary and visited here for Sunday roast. The food was very nice. My gripe is when ordering the roasts I was asked if we wanted stuffing, to which I said yes, although I'm not keen on it but would give mine to my other half. We were given a small square of stuffing on each plate. After paying at the end of our meals and looking at the receipt later I found I had been charged £1.50 extra for each portion of stuffing. I had naturally thought it was included in the price of the roast and the staff member who took my order did not say there was an extra charge for it. It also does not say anywhere on the menu about the extra charge for it. Had I known I would never have said yes as neither of us are that bothered about having stuffing with our roast, especially for 2 small squares costing £3. It should have been made clear when ordering that there was an extra charge or at least written on the menu. I feel this is an underhand thing to do. Would have given a rating of 4 if it wasn't for this

We wanted somewhere to have a Sunday roast over the bank holiday and Ye Olde Jolly Sailor didn't disappoint. The pub is gorgeous, with a lovely beer garden at the front and then wooden beams and a low roof inside. A truly gorgeous British pub. Being extremely busy on a Sunday afternoon over the Bank Holiday, the service was extremely efficient and quick and the food was lovely. I had the gammon whilst my girlfriend the beef, both were gorgeous and the roast comes with veg and cauliflower cheese included. We were not rushed at all considering how busy the pub was, nor did we have to wait very long at the bar. A great spot for Sunday lunch and would happily go back any time soon.

Had 2 meals in jolly sailor whilst on holiday. The 1st Sunday roast. Could not fault it staff very friendly on arrival and the actual meal was very nice. Choice of beef ham or turkey was the only let down no pork or lamb choice but the roast we had was very nice and the girl asked if wanted anymore gravy / veg with the meal which I thought was a nice touch. As it happened we had more than enough. 2 nd meal another time. Ham egg and chips. Lasagne hunters chicken fish and chips and a mackie cheese dish with children’s nuggets chips and beans. All meals perfect. Could not fault none. Thanks guys you made us welcome and food was very good. See you next year hopefully

Bar staff very friendly and the quiz itself was fun (tho we didn’t officially join, just amongst ourselves) great vibe about the place and quizmaster was nailing the job perfectly! we found this place very welcoming, friendly and fun. We chose a few options from the starter menu as mid afternoon snacks. We had some cheesy chips and whitebait both of which appeared within minutes of ordering! The chips were bland and covered with watery cheese. Quite unpleasant, soggy and utterly tasteless. The whitebait was said to be accompanied by salad and tartare sauce. The sauce had a thick brown skin over a watery substance underneath and was therefore discarded. The 'salad' consisted of some dirty, very limp lettuce leaves and nothing else. Again, this was inedible. We are obviously not inclined to return for a full meal /roast etc. Overall, this showed a real lack of care by the 'chef' or serving staff.

6 friends met up here and decided to eat off the menu. Good decision , the food was good. We had mussels, faggots, fish and chips, plus very fresh fish with new boiled potatoes followed by apple pie or sticky toffee pudding with cream. All...

I was really reluctant to write this review as in the past I’ve eaten at this pub and had some good meals but I have to say that the Sunday roast that we had last Sunday was one of the worst I’ve ever had in...

We visited this pub twice whilst staying in Teignmouth. We had the cod and chips, seafood selection and chips and mussels and chips. All were very fresh and tasty - and the quantity of mussels was huge! Beers also well kept. I would recommend a...

Poor quality both on food and service. My partner asked for a medium rare steak, came well cooked. I asked for the cod cooked with coriander and butter, it was terrible, too salty, too dry and no signs of coriander or the butter. When we...

Stopped for lunch after walking from Lustleigh with a friend on Tuesday 26/3. She had a tasty baguette and I had the most delicious cheesy chips. The service was great, the atmosphere was warm and cosy and the waitress was so welcoming. The cakes looked amazing too. We're planning a return visit soon

We stayed here for two nights on the “2 nights for 1” deal and would gladly do so again if offered. The reviewer who said the place was a bit sad must be able to afford more luxurious places than us as we found it well maintained and the reviewer who said it could be cleaner is obviously living on a different planet! Apart from the receptionist who had only been there 2 weeks, the staff were welcoming and efficient. It was only the chef on duty in the kitchen on the first night that needs talking to: the starter took long enough to come, but the main course took so long that the lady on the bar had the good sense to offer complimentary drinks. And when my sausage & mash came it was swamped in gravy - why not in a boat I wonder! I was looking forward to sea bass but this was off the nexus that night. The banoffee pie was so outstanding, that I had it again on night 2! But why not serve it without cream when asked to? The prawn starter was good enough, but the Canon of lamb main course was to die for! I think 4 choices for both starter & dessert, and 5 mains, is a bit limiting. Room 1 was dog-friendly and had the most stupendous views out of the window - which opened properly to aerate the room. The bed was comfortable - even for me - and there was both wardrobe and 12 drawers. The TV was enormous and well positioned for bedtime viewing. The bath was pleasantly deep but sadly rather wide and so took an age to fill. The expelair was weak which made the bathroom rather stuffy. There was a 12” electric fan in the wardrobe and an extra blanket as the windows are single glazed. The grounds are beautifully kept and dog-friendly with a poo bin. The cooked breakfast on both mornings was excellent. Both fried & poached eggs were expertly done and it was nice to have a coffee machine so that you could choose what you fancy on the day. Sadly no grapefruit juice; just apple & orange. But the best thing was the dish of bacon & sausage for the dog! As many reviewers say, the drive needs resurfacing and the hotel needs to bite the bullet and have it done. Turning left at the lane is also not to be recommended but there is not a road to be seen from the hotel! The hotel is so quiet! Room 1 is above Reception but we never heard the comings & goings of residents. Dogs are neither allowed in the restaurant nor the breakfast room, but there is a large table on one side of the bar and 3 tables on the other side suitable. I would recommend this hotel whether you have a dog or not.
