Ye Old Black Horse in Brighton and Hove

Pint of Harvey £5.40 and had to send it back as it had clearly sat in the pipes over night and tasted “off” They poured me off another which was slightly better but still not good. I left just under a half. Either run a real ale pub properly or give up. I understand that the pub is under new ownership so one of the first jobs must be to get the beer right in terms of quality and price. The Coach gets it right all the time!!

First time visiting Ye Olde Black Horse in Rottingdean. I felt very welcomed by the manager who served us, whilst having some lovely chats with her. In addition to this, I found her staff to be very polite and friendly. I ordered beer battered cod and chips with tartare sauce… cooked to perfection, compliments to the chef!! If you’re looking for a place to chill and eat in Rottingdean I highly recommend this pub :)

Wow !! Fabulous food , excellent service , Kim and Hayley go above and beyond what is expected , they are the most friendliest of staff and make you feel soooo welcome ! Went on a Sunday afternoon for a family Birthday not realising they had entertainment. Jason Lee was brilliant which really made the afternoon. Apparently, the pub was a team member down and it was noticeable, however the staff left were brilliant with a special shout out to Hayley who was exceptional. Although in a stressful situation she was a ray of sunshine and made what could have been a bad experience good.

Have just recently visited the black horse and had a lovely day out with friends ! We had wine and bar food and the service recieved from Kim was exceptional , she was bubbly and attentive and engaging with the other punters! Will defo be back maybe for Sunday lunch 10/10 for hospitality and service!

Some friends and I tried to visit the Black a couple of Saturdays ago. We had under 18's with us, aged 14. As we frequent the black a lot we were aware of the over 18 policy after 5 (which we actually like as pubs in the evening should be for adults). However, upon our 4pm arrival to what was a rather concerning empty pub. Kim the Australian bar lady, told us of the policy and then followed up with 'so there is really no point you even coming in'. Continuing on to refuse service. I wonder if the new owners know she is just standing around doing nothing, turning away business and being just another wage collector. Shocking. The plough welcomed the 10 of us, got near £100 and will continue to do so.

Another lovely visit to Ye Olde Black Horse, we were welcomed by the new owner Kim, who was simply wonderful, she couldn’t do enough for us. Now we must admit, there was some trepidation as we heard the previous owners had moved to pastures new, however that trepidation soon turned into joy as the standards clearly have been met as previous management, having chatted to Kim she went on to inform us she had worked for over a year with the 2 chaps who had run the place for years, clearly those standards were ingrained in her training. Kim chatted to us and let us know that all the staff and chefs have stayed with her and nothing will changed, we will still receive the great food and service that we have been accustomed to. The Steak and Ale pie was delicious my hand battered cod was the size of a whale and I struggled to eat it all but again delicious. Bravo to you Kim and your staff. We shall as always return when we come back to this wonderful village. Hilary & Peter

Just been taken over by new people ( thank goodness) but unfortunately the new manager has the same mindset. A local pub requires local people but with the attitude they have then unfortunately it's going the same way as it did with the last people. Empty.

Food very poor! Cheap scampi Fillet steak ok, came with half tom, 1 mushroom tiny salad garnish £24 rip off!!! Deserts poor quality couldn't eat!!! Entertainment cringe worthy! Council parking is only free after 8pm and won't take change!!! They need update there website!

Lived here since July and first visit xmas eve: why did we leave it so long? Great atmosphere and excellent service - a really charming team of very capable people went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Food served quickly - we all thought it excellent. And special mention for the very well-kept Harveys Sussex Best ale. The perfect pub visit: a new favourite for us!

We had the pleasure of all our family (12 of us) together for the first time in 16 years, so we booked Ye Olde Black Horse in February to ensure we could get in for Christmas Day(there was always only going to be one place to go Ye Olde Black Horse) They absolutely surpassed the normal excellence…. All of us were mesmerised by the beautiful Christmas decorations! We had pre-ordered lunch as required by the chaps, every single mouthful from starter, main & desert was absolutley to die for. We simply could not fault a thing, the food, ambiance and service. We have moved from the area and but the family is still local to Rottingdean and Saltdean, we will travel hundreds of miles again to visit. We have made sure we will be calling in February again to book for next year. Thankyou chaps and the Black Horse Staff. You really made our families Christmas. Hilary and Peter.

Not usually one for writing reviews but Ye Olde Black Horse I just have to congratulate you guys! Where do I start?! First of all you are greeted by the best Christmas decor I have ever seen at any venue in the country, (and I do a lot of miles) the effort and detail is second to none! We were seated by a lovely girl named Hayley who was a delight from the moment we walked in. My friends and I have often visited for drinks but hadn’t yet sampled the food. It always looks so appetising and we often felt food envy as we left so this time we treated ourselves to dinner and believe me it was so worth it! Between us we couldn’t decide what to order, as it all sounded so tempting, so we all ordered a different dish so that we could sample from each others plate. Hayley recommended some wines to compliment our dishes and before we knew it the food had arrived. Wow!!!!! You guys have excelled yourselves! The presentation of our dishes was exceptional! The calamari was one of our favourites, crispy and tasty and my lamb shank was superb! The meat just fell off the bone! We did the same with our deserts and all ordered something different again as we all wanted to try everything and once again we were all stunned by the quality and presentation. The cheesecake was heavenly! This venue is by far one of the best around! All the team were friendly and attentive and we spoke with the owners, Dec and John, on the way out, who were so warm and welcoming! We can’t wait to come back again. Many thanks!

My husband and I came in today ,Xmas eve ,and yet again Ye Olde Black horse did not disappoint!! Firstly blown away by the winter wonderland decorations and a friendly greeting by the staff…the service was prompt and attentive throughout and our food was hot ,absolutely delicious and filling !! We had parsnip soup (so yummy) and a salmon terrine starter followed by a roast and the BEST pub pie I’ve ever had ..we were offered sauces and we asked for extra gravy (too good to not have more )…and nothing was too much trouble ….happy friendly staff,Xmas vibes and great food….our favourite pub without a doubt …thank you to the lovely team and merry Christmas .we’ll return in the new Year(I only wish I’d taken more photos but was so busy eating and enjoying the surroundings )

Ye Olde Black Horse never fails to deliver. Once again the pub was decorated like a winter wonderland serving delicious high quality food and served by remarkable staff. Visited on a Sunday afternoon for a Sunday Roast, great service, and meat was moist with lots of sauce. Very nice atmosphere and a spacious garden in the summer.

My partner and I went for a roast on Sunday and I have to say that both the service and the roast itself were exceptional. We have just spent our anniversary meal here and all I can say is, it was amazing. I had the lamb bhuna which was absolutely delicious and the lamb was so tender and my partner had the vegetarian curry which was delicious also. This pub can get totally rammed some nights but it's different on a quiet one. It is an absolute disgraceful for a rude member of staff to come up to me after using the toilet telling me off for using the toilet that is not in public use. I would suggest to prevent that from happening again to other people is to put a sign up where it says “toilets are for customers use only” for future reference. I hope this suggestion helps.

What an amazing night , the live acts they have on offer are right up there. The whole pub was on their feet singing and dancing with the act. The food and garden are pretty great too, never had a bad meal here.

What a jewel this place is, the food was next level, service was great and the effort put into the rear garden was clear to be seen. Will call again in the future. Dog friendly too.

All that you need in one place wonderful

I’ve lived locally my whole life and never have I ever visited this pub. What a regret for leaving it so long! I can honestly say, this is one of the nicest pubs I have ever been in. The food was delicious; I had the crab and crayfish salad - it was so good! They kindly made me a drink that isn’t on their usual menu but we’re happy to oblige, this also tasted amazing. We sat in the garden and it was just stunning, plants everywhere, the sun beaming down. It was just a really lovely and enjoyable afternoon. Our waiter was really nice. She kindly accommodated my fussy daughters lunch choice. Really good value for money. There were 4 us (3 with alcoholic drinks) 4 main meals, 1 side and 3 desserts, this came to just over £110 which in my opinion was an absolute bargain. Thank you for such a lovely afternoon!

A friendly pub in a delightful historic building which serves excellent and food.

Fabulous Sunday lunch at this superb venue. The roast beef was cooked to perfection, the yorkies just right, lovely roast taties and veg side. The salmon & prawn salad was absolutely divine. Great service, cold beer and lovely atmosphere.

Staff attentive yet straightforward. Food delicious. Beer quaffable. You can't ask for more.

Good service, delicious food. You can tell lots of attention has been done to the decor, lovely & clean nicely presented. It could have been a bit warmer though especially on a cold day! Definitely worth a return visit.

This Restaurant has an amazing setting, the building is a 16th century building with very old features and tiny door ways, it gives this place an unbeatable charm and vibe. The garden is just stunning. I ordered the home made beef burger for my lunch, it was seasoned to perfection, with the nicest cheese I've ever had in a burger. The staff here are extremely warm and inviting. The food is surprisingly well priced, everything is homemade, which isn't found that often nowadays. This is a little gem of a find, its tucked away down the high street. It has this inconspicuous front, but when you get inside the beauty unfolds.

Had excellent night watching suspiciously elvis, he was excellent. Drink prices were a steep, can’t comment on food as I didn’t have any. But staff were really friendly

A surprise night out with amazing drinks and entertainment! Fab place....!

We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the beautiful garden at Ye Olde Black Horse. We chose the Green Thai Monkfish Curry and the Tikka Masala Curry, for our mains, both of which were absolutely delicious. To finish, we had a Berry Cheesecake and a Salted Caramel Cheesecake, which again were delicious. To accompany our meal, I had my favourite Harvey’s Best Bitter and my wife had a glass of Prosecco and Sauvignon Blanc. Our food and drinks were served quickly and our waitress was lovely and very friendly. We cannot recommend Ye Olde Black Horse highly enough and will certainly return shortly.

Really disappointing food and grotty toilets: The Black Horse is a relatively upmarket (with prices to match) restaurant and pub. They have great service but sadly the food doesn't live up to the hype. The chicken pie (£16) was basically chicken soup with some puff pastry on top. The Ploughman's Board (£16) was lacking in substance and was more of a starter than a main and the Chicken Liver Pate starter (£8) was lovely but really consisted of a mere scrape of pate at the bottom of a large glass jar. I nearly sent the pie back but I was so hungry I just ate it instead. I simply cannot understand how a pub/restaurant of this standard has such disgusting toilets. They haven't been renovated in years, are always grubby and smelly. On the plus side, the service was great.

We visited for the first time Saturday evening for a drink in the beer garden and we were very impressed. The place looked clean and nicely decorated, and the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Thank you 😄

I was told my wife and our 5 year old daughter could not have lunch in the garden due to a license policy for the little one. Well, i have been in many pubs, and that's a new one for me. Keep up the good work.

Visited during the afternoon on the Kings Coronation 👑🇬🇧 I was thoroughly impressed with the community spirit clearly led by the manager/owner. Remarkable! The venue was very well dressed for the occasion and I can imagine the same effort being made for other occasions. The food was very good, much better standard than I was expecting for a Greene King chain standard food, it was fresh, delicious and very well presented. Hats off to the chef and the great menu available. If my friends niece decides to rent locally I very much hope to return for future visits. A wonderful experience and great pub. Had a rather bad Sunday lunch today with overcooked (chewy) beef. The potatoes where so large they where never going to roast. Just needed cutting in half. We where walking back to the car when the owner came up behind us a snapped that we had not paid. Really gone downhill - this is an old 5 star review changed. We both felt very insulted as he did not even check with his staff. Never again, I so wish I had not left the waiter a tip (silly me)
