Absolutely fantastic roast, welcome, bar staff after a lovely stroll along the under-cliff from Brighton. Highly recommend.

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, the best fish and chips too.

There's a new landlord now, complete change, inside is newly painted and furnished, huge improvement. Staff are lovely and helpful and dogs are allowed. Probably the best pub in the village now!

Lovely little pub with a deceiving frontage. It’s bigger than you think but not huge, with lots of little snug areas but room for a larger group if needed. Roast was decent, not exceptional. Good choice of beers and wines available. Staff very kind and excellent service.

We were visiting from London and had a fantastic night here. Music was great. Isaac Okoh, the star of the night, provided excellent entertainment and had an incredible voice.

Staff basically ignored us. Our table wasn't ready we laid it ourselves, asked for menus told don't take too many. No acknowledgment that we had laid table. Had to order food at bar wasn't told that this had changed. A beautiful sunny afternoon the place was empty and I'm not surprised, food wasn't good, cold and just poor. Definitely won't return there again. Shame because it used to a great pub

Went with high expectations as we had heard it was the place to go for a Sunday lunch and thought we would try on the off chance we could walk in. We walked in and it was empty, which should have perhaps acted as a warning. There appeared to be more staff than customers 4 and a manager, who was welcoming when we arrived but it was unfortunately down hill from there. We were pretty much alone there but no one really showed any interest in us. The food didn’t come all out at once. No one checked in with us if everything was ok or if we wanted further drinks or desserts or teas or coffees offered. All the while staff were either stood about or drinking behind the bar?! The roast was really poor. Grey beef. Thaw and serve Yorkshire pudding. Meh. Asked about Christmas day and was told that there was availability and the manager would get us information. Which never did arrive. We had to go and ask for the bill In the end and were told they’d bring card machine which never arrived either, so went back to the bar to pay. I genuinely want to support local business and have a great and positive experience. You understand if a place is busy that service may suffer but this place was well staffed and virtually empty so there is no excuse for the bad food or service.

So disappointing how this pub has changed under new management. Several dishes were unavailable including a cocktail (£12.50 each!!) due to no mint! Service was incredibly slow and waited 1.5 hours for mains which were not particularly appetising on arrival … Luke warm seafood pasta, soggy pie and hard peas. We were given a complimentary round of drinks because of the wait but it didn’t make up for the disappointment of the food especially for the price. Very empty restaurant so no atmosphere. We were told that one of the chefs was sick but looking at past reviews a lot of excuses have been made. Will not be returning.

We went to this pub because we have been there before the new owners and the food was really good . We got a taxi from Brighton to have lunch there and we now wish we never bothered . We both ordered up curry ? Thinking that they would have made it ? It wasn’t made fresh it must of been brought in . I’ve had curry’s from Asda and they was ok . This what was served up was pre made but by whom ? It had hardly any chicken or taste the rice was watery. The Nan bread was not fresh and it was hard and burnt. We paid the bill and said nothing as we will never step foot in there again . And have already told everyone we meet about it . It cost us £32 for two curry’s . What a rip off . We caught a taxi and went into the Spanish lady in Longridge and brought a proper chicken curry £10.50 with popadoms . Chuckney and Nan bread . A proper bit off food . We stayed there and will go back . If you like to be ripped off go to the black horse they will take your money with a smile . We don’t mind paying for good food but we don’t like paying good money to be ripped off .

Found this pub/restaurant on a cold wet day after a local walk and it was just what we needed to cheer us up. Food was home made and amazing value for money. Dietary needs were not an issue. Staff were friendly. We will be returning.

This lovely pub is at the end of the under cliff walk from Brighton just 3 mins from the sea. We had no booking for a Sunday lunch but were able to find a gorgeous garden table to continue enjoying a summers day. The inside dining area seemed bright and cheerful also. The service was cheerful and helpful. The food was simple pub food done really well. There was a good range of beers on tap. Overall a wonderful way to end a long walk!

Totally awful!!We had booked over a week in advance for 12 people,for my mother in laws birthday. We were given a list as we sat down,of the food that wasn't available,leaving only around five items to choose from,and then only a few portions of each.A Scottish manager was brought to see us,who was aggressive in his manner, telling us there had been a death ,the chef had left,etc etc.No real apologies, just excuses!!Why weren't we contacted?Totally ruined our birthday celebrations, thankfully the Plough was able to accommodate us,fantastic staff,great atmosphere, and wonderful food. Even though Ye Olde Black Horse advertised on boards outside,this was false advertising,as not of it was available. Definitely a place to avoid!!

Waited 40 mins for a soup and seafood platter, when it came the immediate disappointment! Cold jarred prawns (not king prawns!) seafood mix. Menu stated king prawns and salmon but neither were provided. The bread was the stale hard ends of baguettes, complete waste of money and lack of service.

My partner and I live in Swindon, but Ye Olde Black Horse has become our must visit restaurant whenever we're in Brighton; the building itself is beautiful and the garden is serene, the staff are always friendly and helpful and the food is delicious! On our most recent visit, 30.07.2024, I had the prawn and crab linguine, which was incredible; the sauce was so rich and creamy! Hats off to Clair who was running the show by herself that evening!

Lovely quiet garden. Good food and great service.

Fantastic pub! Very cozy interior and a nice terrace at the back. We had lunch outside in the garden: pie with beef and stilton and ham with eggs. And delicious fries! Served with a delicious glass of Pinot Grigio Rosé: that was a lot of fun!

Had delicious home made pizzas which were an absolute bargain with the Thursday night ‘buy one get one free’ deal. Generous toppings-lots of fresh vegetables on the vegetarian one and plenty of ham and mushrooms on the farmhouse and lovely thick, fluffy bases. Excellent fries and coleslaw too. Excellent service too.

Starters cold had to return and still came back just warm, long wait not much choice to choose from as very little on menu. Service not organised well. Venue was empty not the same since sold to new owners now a pub rather than a restaurant.

Avoid… Used to be lovely Now a soulless place with no atmosphere. Basic menu and food not cooked properly (3 meals came out cold) Food was basic - pies and curry were like a microwaved meal. No table service - need to fix that, there were enough staff propping up the bar. Probably fine if you want a pint and a bag of crisps. Wish I had read most recent reviews before I booked, all tell similar story All things easy to fix - hope they resolve the issues

Had roast beef, pint of Harvey's, glass red wine. £27. The wait was long for the meal but was worth it in the end. Presented nice and all veg to my taste.

Where do we start. Former management nailed it with their fabulous entertainment. Their food yes freezer food but not bad at least hot. The new management have lost the plot. We had beige calamari. Tinned soup. One of us was served a used pate in a jar. They were basically emptying out the freezers before the new menu. Airline lounge food is Michelin star compared to this poor offering. Half the menu was not available. Toilets stink. Once wonderful garden looks awful. New landlord not interested in our concerns. The Black Horse has a long way to go. If you go there just have drinks and crisps

Upon arrival we were greeted with happy smiling staff members, when we ordered the staff were polite, friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing, the presentation, portion sizes and taste were all on point! Once we were finished with our meals the staff cleared the table quite quickly. Would definitely recommend, and would definitely come back again!

Properly the worst Sunday roast I've ever had, I won't be returning,

This was probably the worst meal I have had anywhere, and the service was so slow that some of the group had finished their meal before others were served. On the small menu offered there was no excuse for this, and it is very sad that a beautiful old pub, not long ago the pride of the Main Street, has deteriorated so quickly. I can only hope that it can be rescued by new staff and management as soon as possible.

Waited for more than an hour for our food, which tasted of nothing. Ok for a drink but forget the food. Men's toilet a catastrophe!

Never have we had to wrote such a review, What has happened to our favourite place?? A once “go to” for us has now turned into a “never again” We waited and waited and waited for our food to arrive, finally after 1 hour and 15 minutes the food started to arrive bit by bit…. And then.. Disaster …. What once was the best food in Rottingdean has now turned into the worst. Dreadful, cold, badly presented, tasteless! 2 of our party got theor main courses 15 minutes after we had received ours. The place has gone to wreck and ruin, we are so disappointed, it spoilt our whole day amd was deeply upsetting. The place seems unloved, unkept and is filthy. Staff who didn’t care and were too busy on their phones to be interested in our needs. We shall not return. Does anyone know where the previous management went? We hope its local so we can visit. Pint of Harvey £5.40 and had to send it back as it had clearly sat in the pipes over night and tasted “off” They poured me off another which was slightly better but still not good. I left just under a half. Either run a real ale pub properly or give up. I understand that the pub is under new ownership so one of the first jobs must be to get the beer right in terms of quality and price. The Coach gets it right all the time!!

Update: A first visit since a change of ownership. Nice fresh decor, ale well kept but served with too much head for me. The staff were ok but for me, lacked something, possibly because there were only a few customers present that lunchtime. This pub can get totally rammed some nights but it's different on a quiet one. Unfortunately, without an event on, it was empty apart from two other diners for this visit; it seems that all pubs are suffering unless there is entertainment. That said the food was good for pub grub & the server was friendly enough.

We didn’t eat this time but after the change in management it took a few weeks to get the regular Wednesday Quiz back up and running. It’s now back with a great atmosphere making for a fun evening out. Long may it continue.

Went on a Sunday afternoon for a family Birthday not realising they had entertainment. Jason Lee was brilliant which really made the afternoon. Apparently, the pub was a team member down and it was noticeable, however the staff left were brilliant with a special shout out to Hayley who was exceptional. Although in a stressful situation she was a ray of sunshine and made what could have been a bad experience good.

Wow !! Fabulous food , excellent service , Kim and Hayley go above and beyond what is expected , they are the most friendliest of staff and make you feel soooo welcome ! Had the most amazing time , all staff were attentive and made our evening , didn’t have to want for anything x Definitely going back x

I have to say, and im not one to leave reviews, but i am disgusted by what has been said in the last few reviews on here, and i can only say i believe it to relate to monday evening (19/02) when I was visiting family and friends in the area and enjoying a drink and sadly heard everything. I was at the bar in this pub on Monday evening, and I really don't think what has been said is even to be true. These 'gentlemen' were being offensive and abusive towards this lady working, who myself, having worked in the industry for a long time, handled the situation respectfully and calmly, as for how they were talking to her was foul. They didn't like what they were being told, something about diiferent opening times etc due to staffing issues, which happens unfortunately in this current climate, which was out of her control, and instead of handling a complaint in a normal manner, called her names and continued to talk to her like she was something on the bottom of their shoe! Get some manners gents! And don't put down a perfectly fine establishment just because you didn't like what you were told!

Have just recently visited the black horse and had a lovely day out with friends ! We had wine and bar food and the service recieved from Kim was exceptional , she was bubbly and attentive and engaging with the other punters! Will defo be back maybe for Sunday lunch 10/10 for hospitality and service!

Some friends and I tried to visit the Black a couple of Saturdays ago. We had under 18's with us, aged 14. As we frequent the black a lot we were aware of the over 18 policy after 5 (which we actually like as pubs in the evening should be for adults). However, upon our 4pm arrival to what was a rather concerning empty pub. Kim the Australian bar lady, told us of the policy and then followed up with 'so there is really no point you even coming in'. Continuing on to refuse service. I wonder if the new owners know she is just standing around doing nothing, turning away business and being just another wage collector. Shocking. The plough welcomed the 10 of us, got near £100 and will continue to do so.

New owners vile nasty stuck up her own backside. Most obnoxious lady iv met. Over priced food if that's what you call it. A big no go

This used to be a fantastic pub, and I say "pub" in the loosest possible terms as now they aren't interested in you unless you are buying food. I have heard of people being turned away that only want to have a drink, as they were only providing table service to "eating" customers. I think that they really consider themselves to be a restaurant, and I think it's such a shame for such a long standing pub. My friends and I have being going here on a Monday night for many years, but the new management told fifteen of us last night that they are no longer opening on a Monday night, forcing us to find another venue. It wasn't done in a nice way either, upsetting a large proportion of the group. We certainly aren't rowdy drinkers! Whilst I used to eat here regularly on other nights when it was under the previous management, I won't be doing so again. Shame. Luckily, there are a few other very good pubs in Rottingdean that are far more welcoming!

Interestingly different with quirky decor.

Just been taken over by new people ( thank goodness) but unfortunately the new manager has the same mindset. A local pub requires local people but with the attitude they have then unfortunately it's going the same way as it did with the last people. Empty.

Another lovely visit to Ye Olde Black Horse, we were welcomed by the new owner Kim, who was simply wonderful, she couldn’t do enough for us. Now we must admit, there was some trepidation as we heard the previous owners had moved to pastures new, however that trepidation soon turned into joy as the standards clearly have been met as previous management, having chatted to Kim she went on to inform us she had worked for over a year with the 2 chaps who had run the place for years, clearly those standards were ingrained in her training. Kim chatted to us and let us know that all the staff and chefs have stayed with her and nothing will changed, we will still receive the great food and service that we have been accustomed to. The Steak and Ale pie was delicious my hand battered cod was the size of a whale and I struggled to eat it all but again delicious. Bravo to you Kim and your staff. We shall as always return when we come back to this wonderful village. Hilary & Peter

Lived here since July and first visit xmas eve: why did we leave it so long? Great atmosphere and excellent service - a really charming team of very capable people went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Food served quickly - we all thought it excellent. And special mention for the very well-kept Harveys Sussex Best ale. The perfect pub visit: a new favourite for us!

We had the pleasure of all our family (12 of us) together for the first time in 16 years, so we booked Ye Olde Black Horse in February to ensure we could get in for Christmas Day(there was always only going to be one place to go Ye Olde Black Horse) They absolutely surpassed the normal excellence…. All of us were mesmerised by the beautiful Christmas decorations! We had pre-ordered lunch as required by the chaps, every single mouthful from starter, main & desert was absolutley to die for. We simply could not fault a thing, the food, ambiance and service. We have moved from the area and but the family is still local to Rottingdean and Saltdean, we will travel hundreds of miles again to visit. My husband and I came in today ,Xmas eve ,and yet again Ye Olde Black horse did not disappoint!! Firstly blown away by the winter wonderland decorations and a friendly greeting by the staff…the service was prompt and attentive throughout and our food was hot ,absolutely delicious and filling !! We had parsnip soup (so yummy) and a salmon terrine starter followed by a roast and the BEST pub pie I’ve ever had ..we were offered sauces and we asked for extra gravy (too good to not have more )…and nothing was too much trouble ….happy friendly staff,Xmas vibes and great food….our favourite pub without a doubt …thank you to the lovely team and merry Christmas .we’ll return in the new Year(I only wish I’d taken more photos but was so busy eating and enjoying the surroundings )

Ye Olde Black Horse never fails to deliver. Once again the pub was decorated like a winter wonderland serving delicious high quality food and served by remarkable staff. Not usually one for writing reviews but Ye Olde Black Horse I just have to congratulate you guys! Where do I start?! First of all you are greeted by the best Christmas decor I have ever seen at any venue in the country, (and I do a lot of miles) the effort and detail is second to none! We were seated by a lovely girl named Hayley who was a delight from the moment we walked in. My friends and I have often visited for drinks but hadn’t yet sampled the food. It always looks so appetising and we often felt food envy as we left so this time we treated ourselves to dinner and believe me it was so worth it! Between us we couldn’t decide what to order, as it all sounded so tempting, so we all ordered a different dish so that we could sample from each others plate. Hayley recommended some wines to compliment our dishes and before we knew it the food had arrived. Wow!!!!! You guys have excelled yourselves! The presentation of our dishes was exceptional! The calamari was one of our favourites, crispy and tasty and my lamb shank was superb! The meat just fell off the bone! We did the same with our deserts and all ordered something different again as we all wanted to try everything and once again we were all stunned by the quality and presentation. The cheesecake was heavenly! This venue is by far one of the best around! All the team were friendly and attentive and we spoke with the owners, Dec and John, on the way out, who were so warm and welcoming! We can’t wait to come back again. Many thanks!

Visited on a Sunday afternoon for a Sunday Roast, great service, and meat was moist with lots of sauce. Very nice atmosphere and a spacious garden in the summer.

My partner and I went for a roast on Sunday and I have to say that both the service and the roast itself were exceptional. We have just spent our anniversary meal here and all I can say is, it was amazing. I had the lamb bhuna which was absolutely delicious and the lamb was so tender and my partner had the vegetarian curry which was delicious also. The service was amazing too and we can thoroughly recommend the Black Horse, because to be honest, whatever meal you have here is always good. Thank you for the wonderful service we had.

Had the most amazing Sunday roast! Me & my boyfriend just moved to the area and have been here for their tribute nights & now their roast too, had a fab experience both times. Delicious food (better roast than Soho House!!), lovely staff & great speedy service. No complaints, happy with our new local!!

Oh how we have missed you! Having moved from the area we were delighted to visit family in Rottingdean and luckily managed to secure a booking for Sunday lunch… So glad to see nothing had chamged and stamdards were as high on previous visits… Declan...

A cosy pub in the centre of Rottingdean serving great ales. It has a restaurant but we only popped in for a drink so we will be back to sample the food later

It is an absolute disgraceful for a rude member of staff to come up to me after using the toilet telling me off for using the toilet that is not in public use. I would suggest to prevent that from happening again to other people is to put a sign up where it says “toilets are for customers use only” for future reference. I hope this suggestion helps.
