I love Yaffle and now use it as my go-to despite not being vegan, the atmosphere is really nice and the food and drink selection is always spot on. I tend to have pretty high expectations and yaffle doesn’t disappoint, it’s a little bit of a shame it’s not open on a Sunday but that’s all I can think of!

What a find. Being on holiday I always dread what I am eating at lunch time and evening meal. As most times I end up eating a jacket pot and baked beans!!! For lunch mostly fruit. So it was a delight finding this place. My husband who is a meat eater loved his harvest toastie. I had Cheese and Beans toastie. Both of us had the hot chocolate. Not badly priced neither which makes a change.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre this lovely place serves gorgeous food. The staff are friendly and cater for your every need. I have been twice and will certainly go again. Their sunday lunch and all day breakfast (both vegan of course) - amazing. Small, and certainly quirky, it is definitely worth a visit, as is their well stocked shop downstairs.

This is an unusual venue, certainly refreshing change from the generic chain coffee shops which seem soulless. The venue is not wheelchair friendly which is not good for all sadly and is a little cluttered, however, this is part of the quirkiness, it has an independent premises vibe, the people obviously have a love and passion for the place and are extremely welcoming , the Ploughman's lunch was nicely presented which I had, my companion had a very hearty soup, the home-made bread was tasty, the vegan cheese was creamy, this was a refreshing change for a light lunch from the sterile coffee shops springing up everywhere, it has a commune feel and plenty of books and even board games amongst the dining area curiosities that surround you.

Yaffle feels like eating at a friend's house. It's very informal, relaxed and fun, with games and books around. The menu is small, but when you're veggie/vegan a long menu can be daunting after years of little choice. I went to the shop downstairs and did some shopping. I was overwhelmed by the choice afterwards I went upstairs to Yaffles. The man gave me a menu and I went to the seating area. There are 4 tables and a lady very kindly let me share her table. All the customers were kindly. I had nut roast with mash, peas and onion gravy. It was very nice and cheap too. Nothing was too much trouble. Everything on the menu is vegan and halal (it says this on the menu) I also had an apple cordial and a triffin that was delicious. The Cook had nipped down to the shop while I was there to get supplies so it would be very rare for them to run out of something.

I go there regularly for a treat. The soups are delicious and filling. The bread is organic. For those with a sweet tooth, try the chocolate slices made with wholesome ingredients. The staff are all friendly and hippie like; if you are alone there is plenty to read, if you come with children there are plenty of games to play with. I go there regularly because if you are lonely you will be listened to. They use pretty crockery with flowered cups and saucers a bit like going to visit your grandma! One thing you should know is that it is an upstairs restaurant there are a few steps to get to it.

Love it here, always a friendly welcome and an interesting chat. There are not many cafes of interest in Derby so it is a rare treat to visit Yaffle. Board games, books, binoculars, and the nights where they create a menu based on a particular country all add to the charm. The cafe is small and homely, and there is an overwhelming choice of tea. The art on the walls is great and the food is wholesome and good even if you aren't vegetarian/vegan. There's no slickness or standardisation, like in a chain cafe, but I like that. A good spot for a bit of peace in the centre of Derby too. Staff are all lovely.

I decided to visit Yaffle Café this afternoon, after having a pleasant experience the last time I visited (about 9 months ago). As a vegetarian who's becoming more and more interested in vegan products, I wanted to see if Yaffle was somewhere I should visit more often. Local vegans may agree that The Cake Hole became very disappointing when its original owner left, and there are very few places in Derby/Nottingham that cater to such a lifestyle. Sadly, the Yaffle Café isn't somewhere I plan to return. My visit started off pleasantly. The single member of staff was very polite. She asked if I'd visited the café before, explained how things work there and informed me that they had a regular menu if nothing on the specials board appealed. I also found that the food was reasonably priced. A toasted sandwich, a glass of orange juice and a slice of cake (which I took to go after enjoying the sandwich) came to just over £6.20. The café also offers a daily soup special, as well as vegan-friendly versions of standard café fare like bangers and mash. The premises are small, but not claustrophobic. There are also large selections of board games and books on offer for guests while they visit, as well as some books for sale.I enjoyed the sandwich, as well as the side of beansprouts. However, shortly after finishing the sandwich, I noticed what looked like a small brown hair across one of the beansprouts. I felt that it was too late to complain seeing as I'd already finished the sandwich, so I just tried my best to avoid touching the hair and ate the remaining sprouts. I also felt that it would be unfair to judge the whole café on a single mistake. So I asked to take a slice of chocolate cake to go. Although the cake itself was of high quality, I found another hair after eating about 4 fifths of the cake. The hair was poking out of the cake. Thankfully it hadn't gone into my mouth. However, the rest of the cake went into the nearest bin. Finding hairs inside two items of food on the same occasion is unacceptable. It's particularly bad when the café holds a 5 star hygiene rating.I also noticed that the previous review stated that the only way to access the café is by using the stairs. This is also the case when you go from the counter to the seating area. I find this odd when Yaffle actually has a social change library, and wonder if it's worth the owners considering a move to somewhere more accessible.Side note: If you're vegan and do choose to visit the café yourself, the only milk alternative they had on offer was soy the last time I visited. This might have changed since then, so it's possibly worth asking the staff about this if you have an intolerance.

Yaffle is a sweet little cafe with a decent choice of reasonably priced vegan food. Very quirky, loved that it had a bookshop and pile of games although it wasn't clear whether these were actually for visitors to play or if they were for sale. Service was fine but nothing outstanding. The ploughmans lunch was a little disappointing - the bread was sliced up strangely and it could have done with some salad. However I will likely be returning to try something else, it had a nice feel to it and I can imagine this cafe would make a lovely regular haunt.

I have visited the cafe on numerous occasions. In the evening for the speciality evening meal, dropped in during the day for hot soup and had cooked veggie breakkie. As a vegetarian, it's brilliant that I have somewhere local I can go and eat reasonably-priced veggie food. I have often chatted casually with other customers and staff and found we've had a lot in common - usually a passion and commitment to address social injustices. I always take away a cake for my elderly mother who can't get out of the house easily and she absolutely loves them. The staff wrap up the cakes for me with care and consideration.

The first attempt at trying to go to Yaffle was a complete failure as access to the cafe is up some rather narrow stairs which two members of our group were unable to climb, we asked if there was any other access but there isn't so we ended up leaving! This left us feeling rather angry and frustrated as you can imagine! We went back some weeks later (minus two people!) and had a second attempt. Sadly, we weren't that impressed which is a huge shame as we had been eagerly looking forward to this visit for a long time. We had to repeat our order numerous times and when it finally showed up it was wrong, seeing as we were the only customers in the cafe i'm not sure what the delay/confusion was about really. Thank goodness for the library of books to distract us whilst waiting so long! The cafe was really cold and we had to keep our coats on the whole time, not what you want when it's a blustery day outside. The cupcakes were really nice and very flavoursome but horrifically overpriced, the rest of the food was mediocre at best and very expensive. We could see what Yaffle was attempting to achieve but it fell way short of it. We will try again in the future with one of the world food nights and we only hope that we have a more positive experience of Yaffle on our third attempt!

I go to Yaffle quite a lot because the specials/meals always seem to sort me out. I have quite a busy lifestyle and so sometimes I don't always have the time/energy to cook myself meals but I always feel like I've had an injection of goodness after eating a Yaffle meal. I don't really feel that food at any other restaurants compares in terms of feeling like you've given your body what it needs in terms of nutrients as well as quality of flavours. There's also the comforting knowledge that the food is ethically sourced. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and there is also a wide variety of reading material on offer (Yaffle runs a library service so customers can also borrow books). This means that its quite a nice place to visit by yourself. Its so relaxed it feels a bit like a holiday from everyday life and is always a good place to come to after a stressful and busy day at work. I love the colourful decor as well. The board games and relaxed atmosphere make this a great place to catch up with a friend without spending too much money (something I've done once).Overall it feels a bit like chilling out over someone's house except you can stay as long as you want (within the opening hours obviously!) without out staying your welcome. Oooo one more thing - the cakes and choc slab are amazing - I'm not even a veggie or a vegan but these taste soooooo good!!Go visit Yaffle, its great :)

I had searched online looking for vegan options in Derby and this seemed like the best choice for us, and we are so pleased we picked it. It's upstairs above the small natural foods store called Sound Bites, just a short walk from the Strand. It's a small apartment converted into a restaurant so when you first walk in you are in the kitchen and then up a few more stairs to the dining area where there are loads of books as part of a radical lending library and informative brochures and magazines to browse. The woman who greeted us was friendly and welcoming and helped us out since it was our first time there. It's very informal and feels like you are at a friends house and they are preparing lunch for you. We opted for 2 orders of the breakfast special (which she prepared even though it was afternoon). £5 for toast, beans, veggie sausage, tomato, mushrooms and a tea, coffee or juice. Such a bargain for a nice hot meal! I mentioned I avoid eating a lot of gluten even though I'm not strictly gluten free and she was kind enough to go downstairs to Sound Bites and grab a gluten-free sausage for me. It took a while to prepare but it was worth the wait! In the meantime we browsed through a few books and magazines and enjoyed our time. It is all vegan, and my omnivore partner and I loved every bite!

As visitors to Derby, we hunted around for the Yaffle for a while - not an easy place to find (a missing street sign did'nt help!). So, on finding the place our anticipation was piqued as we shuffled up the stairs to its first floor location. The welcome and service was great, but after that everything else was a bit disappointing. I'm not here to be unfair or vindictive - but I do expect better than average home cooking when I eat out. The kitchen was tiny, which explains the limited options - we chose the special. The service was good and the food arrived quickly (I heard the ping of the microwave). Our meal was fairly nondescript - it reminded me of the first veggie restaurant I ever went to, back in the 1980's - and was cooking which I could have equalled or bettered at home. I believe this is the only dedicated veggie eatery in Derby (we could find any others listed online) and as such they should be applauded.Based on our experience, I think that most people would find the Yaffle Cafe wanting - I have no issues with the wobbly thrift sale furniture and the twee shabby chic decor - for us it all about the food- and it is here that Yaffle needs to do better.

Yaffle cafe is probably the most adorable place to eat in Derby. It only has three tables, it only really seats 10 people comfortably and at the moment their food options are a little limited (but will be expanding very soon) but the quality of both the food and the service are outstanding.Their menu is fully vegan and they started by selling tea and cakes before moving on to hot food. This means that their range of drinks is immense, more choice of tea than I can comfortably choose between, and their cakes are sublime. They generally have two types of cake per day plus their amazing chocolate slab, and it is worth noting that these are not dry-healthy-hippy vegan cakes. These are decadent mouthfuls of gooey joy, exploding in your mouth as you bite into them.Their soups are also the best soups I have eaten any where in derby. They are hearty, interesting and always impeccably seasoned. Some of my favourites have been their vegan haggis soup, their borscht and their roast parsnip. The haggis soup was deeply savoury and one bowl left me full for the rest of the day, their borscht was light and fruity, but still had the deep smoky beetroot flavour shining through and the velvety texture and sweetness of their roast parsnip soup made me squeal with happiness. As well as their cakes and soups they also serve a wide range of toasties and similar food items and hope to be adding more to their everyday menu soon.Yaffle are also open two evenings a week for full three course meals, with food from a different nation eat time, but due to the size of the establishment it is worth booking in advance for this.OK. So I also should mention that Yaffle is tiny. It is squeezed above the shop Soundbites and it is not uncommon to share your table with other patrons. The service is amazing but very informal, more like the staff welcoming you into their home rather than visiting a restaurant. It's not a restaurant, it's very much a cafe, and a very informal cafe at that, but I can't think of anywhere in Derby where you would get better food and a warmer welcome, and I can't think of anywhere I would rather spend my money.
