Afrikana in Derby

Amazing food and friendly staff. We ordered the ‘We meet again’ sharing family platter which contains a wide selection of grilled meats accompanied with rice and rustic chips. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, everything was cooked to perfection with mouth watering flavours. We would highly recommend paying Afrikana in Derby a visit if you’re looking for high quality food accompanied by a lovely atmosphere. Thanks again!

5 star experience.. I came in to Derby Afrikana for the first time with two friends after work on the weekend. We were seated straight away, food and drinks were delivered in good time.. Every single dish looked fantastic and tasted just as good. Staff were friendly and took care of you. Had a lovely time and will definitely be returning😍.

We had a lovely evening at Afrikana, the food was promptly served and the goat curry and kebab skewer was especially delicious. The staff were attentive and responsive. Good food and great service all around!

3 of us went for a long awaited catch up and picked Afrikana over The Nines. That turned out to be a bad choice. Waitress was rude and had no customer service skills whatsoever. We asked basic questions, to which she didn't know the answer, eventually she said its her 2nd day working there, and didn't show initiative to check with a more senior member of staff, we had to ask if she could check for us, even then she was dragging her heels. Didn't know anything about the items on the menu. We spoke to another staff member about our experience, he seemed disinterested. Was a quiet night in there so no excuses for not giving your customers some decent attention. Food came well presented and at the time tasted quite good. However, we were all very ill later on that night and suffered from resulting food poisoning. In hindsight, the service we received was a red flag. Think twice before going here.

Ordered takeaway from here and I will never order again! For a start I paid £15 for a meal that came in a little meal prep type tub. The "rice and peas" is literally boiled rice with some kidney beans in and the plantain was like eating rubber 🤮 the flavours were nice on the chicken but was way over cooked and was so tough to chew. Really really disappointed mainly because of how expensive it was I was expecting it to be a lot better!

The food was terrible. The chicken wings were more batter than meat. The prawns were extremely small yet cost £11. The lamb chops were the only thing that tasted gaily decent, however were extremely cold. Waste of time and money

Very overpriced, take ages to get the food to you. They seem to cater for their mates at busy times. Food ok but service drags that down to.

Ordered via Uber eats. I didn't realise they were 8 miles away but they chose to accept orders from me anyway. Took over 2 hours to arrive when on the app states 30 mins. The first time I phoned, a young gent advised they couldn't find a driver at first but someone left 7 mins ago. I had phone again 40 mins later, so I suspect the first call was dishonest. The 2nd person who answered the phone an older gent said it would be another 10 mins. Of course it eventually arrived long after 10 mins. Food was good however. We paid extra for an Africana chips upgrade and got a side of Africana chips instead with the regular chips with the meals. Anyway, once the Uber Eats app algorithm knew the food was very late, I couldn't leave a review, hence I left one here instead. So the moral is don't over promise delivery if you don't have a driver and don't lie about updated delivery times when it's already running late - I wouldn't have left this if they were honest. Also for consumers, when using Uber Eats etc, always check the distance as many takeaways will lie about delivery times to compete for business. Finally, don’t take the reviews seriously on Uber Eats.

Honestly struggled to eat the chicken and i didnt finish it either. It need longer it was fat and chewy. Chips were nice though

I would highly recommend Afrikana Derby. I really enjoyed Fried Chicken is Life - fried chicken with Jerk gravy, rice n beans, plantain and coleslaw, with a fruity mocktail and apple pie & custard to follow. Quick service and best of all super tasty! Will be heading to my hometown Cardiff one as soon as I get chance....

I love this place! It's the only place I know where I can get good south african food. I went last night for their bunny chow which unfortunately they had run out of due to high demand! So I chose a different dish that I never would have gotten otherwise. It was amazing!! And now I am dreaming about the next time I can go any try more of the wonderful dishes!! Happy happy accident!

I wasn't really fortunate yet to be there but often order takeaway from here. Their "We Goat you Back" is by far the best goat/lamb curry I have tried in Derbyshire. Their curry is similar to South Indian goat curry the way I like it, tendering meat, bit of spice and mouth watering flavours. I also order plantain on the sides and they're delicious too.

Ordered from Afrikana Derby, I was really looking forward to it as the food looked good… anyway food never turns up and is very late at this point which meant I went hungry for the night. Some guy turns up, he looks like a delivery driver and then proceeds to get arrested outside my house with 2 police and an under cover. I’ve tried to contact Afrikana via email to resolve the issue but been unable to find a reliable email that doesn’t bounce back. So unfortunately not a great first impression. (I had no tracking as it was Afrikanas driver)

Visited this evening with my work colleagues nice ambience the food here is very tasty and well flavoured definitely recommend to try the lamb chops the best I had in a long time 10/10 from me

Clean tidy restaurant well located and plenty of parking around the food was very tasty and excellent value for money definitely would recommend to try this little hidden gem if you are in derby

Ordered from Uber eats. Wait time 25-55 minutes they then increased the wait time- so waited 1 hour 30 food never arrived. Called them and they were so rude and said the food has not been made and will be another 25 minutes! Ridiculous. They then ended the call without me finishing my sentences and cancelled the ordered. This is absolutely disgusting customer service and will not be eating here again. Strongly advise not to order from here unless you fancy waiting 2 hours for no food and rude customer service

Never order from this place. Tok over 2 hours for food and when you call they just say it's because they are busy. They then cancel your order last min. Very very poor customer service. Be warned!!

The customers should never be spoken to in such a rude way. As the shop owner did who never apologised just hung up the phone do not use this company.

I rang the restaurant twice because it was so late. The first time I was told 5 minutes when it was already 20mins late. I rang back 15mins later with still no sign of the food. Finally it arrived 1 hour late, 2 hours after placing the order. Food was cold and so not enjoyable

Delivery was super late. A £15 meal should not be missing items.

It’s been a while since I’ve come to Derby however last time I was here I was addicted to this place. I’m glad it’s still open. Food is the best! I will defo be ordering again. Delivery driver nice & polite 👍👌🏻

Walked in without booking asking for a table for 9. Staff were extremely friendly and hospitable. Service with a smile. Food came out promptly and was absolutely spot on! Cannot fault anything. Will definitely be visiting again...

Absolutely amazing! Ordered through Uber eats tonight and had half a chicken with Thier house sauce and oh my, it was the best chicken I've ever had! The flavour was just incredible. The chicken was so tasty too. Even the chips were perfect. I've visited Gambia, Africa a few times and miss the spices and flavours of the food so much but this meal brought it all back to me. Will definitely be ordering from here again, thankyou so much!

We had a lovely meal, food was delicious, service was excellent, children were made to feel very welcome and staff were really nice to them. Amazing art work on the walls too, lovely atmosphere.

Ordered delivery of we goat your back, it was actually full of new potatos and only 2 pieces of meat it does not say on the menu it has potatoes in it, obviously trying to bulk it out 15 quid is a bit much for a potato curry when I actually ordered goat, only one piece of plantin and found a piece of yellow plastic in my food which I nearly broke my tooth on, looked like it was broken off a plastic fork. Won't be ordering from here again really bad quality for what you pay.

Food is 45 minutes late, stone cold and half of the order missing and delivery driver has an attitude. Deliberately ignoring calls afterwards, assuming they recognised my number after chasing them 3-4 times for my delivery. I used to order here regularly, maybe every month £50. Very happy to never order here again. Owner called me afterwards saying he'd cancel and refund my order IF I removed poor review. Must think I am a mug. Refunded it through the app and will review shortly on there also.

Being an ex-Durban girl I was transported back to my misspent youth when I tried their the mutton bunny chow. OMD it was AMAZING! My only regret is we don't live in Derby or we'd be back for more of the same every week. Gorgeous, deep flavour and melt-in-your-mouth meat - thank you for the trip down memory lane :)

DO NOT RECOMMENDED!! Really cold stale food. One true bun burger was nasty, it was cold and unflavourful. The cheeky chops were cold and chewy. As we're the chips.

One of the starters didn’t arrive, £3 was sent in 50ps and that didn’t even cover the starter missing, no mention of chips with the chicken so ordered chips and spinach with meal no spinach so got double chips lol

Good menu choice, food comes out sharply when ordered, tasty and good portion size, loved the music which adds to the excellent atmosphere, give it a go.

The food arrived 2 hours after I ordered it. Hot food was fine but the cheesecake wasn't edible. Real Shame as Afrikana is my go to.

Smashed the mash, again. Yum! Haven't been able to eat here for a while, but it's not failed me yet. The meat was tender & tasty, the mash better than my mum's.

I went with my girlfriend and the food we had was delicious and served quickly. We very much enjoyed ourselves.

Highly recommend Afrikana derby I have visited there other branches but the food here is definitely a lot better very well located in the cathedral quarter clean and really enjoyed the music and atmosphere will definitely visit again

Food good. Had chicken wrap and the beef shish kebab, beautifully presented. Music- monotonous, black US rap- not African at all! Much better music from Africa.

Found this place by accident, as I am never in that part of town, I will be in the future! Food is tasty, cooked well, and very good portion sizes. You feel like you're in a restaurant in Cape Town, I know as have. The menu will keep you coming back, nothing like it in Derby.

We visited Afrikana on Friday 16th Feb in the evening after being recommended by my daughter. It was our first visit and impressed is an understatement! Food was delicious, fresh and great value for money. I'm a vegetarian and the vegetable wrap that I had was delicilous! Service was impeccable. So good we're planning our next visit!

what a lovely restaurant . we hadn't booked and waited for a table , this place has such a nice atmosphere and music that waiting was not a problem . the staff were very attentive and friendly. my only issue was i should have ordered more food - as it was lovely and i could have eaten the whole menu highly recommended

I ate meaty for the first time in years by mistake because they messed up the order. No attempt at an apology.

I ordered a vegan meal and they delivered chicken, which I ate some of before I realised. When I called to complain they insinuated that I had ordered the wrong thing (I didn't, and I have the evidence still to prove that). Nobody apologised at all, and when the driver came round with a replacement he asked for the chicken version back. which luckily I'd kept. He didn't say sorry, and said to me "you haven't eaten some of this have you?", to which I replied that I had, and that I wasn't happy about it. (I have no idea what they intended to do with it) Also, they didn't replace the rest of the meal, so the chips were completely cold. The whole debacle was frankly disgraceful.

Birthday celebration. Second visit to Afrikana but this time with the whole family & was not disappointed at all. Food is amazing, good portion sizes, service is spot on & the atmosphere is relaxed. Great value!

Ordered via delivery previously and usually I’m a big fan and have given big reviews before. Went to dine in for the first time and sadly rating had really decreased. The waiter at first forgot she had seated us before I called her over. Initially language barrier with waiter so she couldn’t understand our order very well but we overlooked that as not her fault. When my food arrived it was missing some food and I had to show the waiter the menu to prove I was correct, the tables were VERY sticky to then note that when cleaning tables there’s no cleaning product or disinfectant used but instead Mr Sheen polish so I dread to think about the bacteria build up going on in there. The glasses provided were also dirty with one having some pink/red residue on there. The plantain was sadly hard and cold and appeared it was rushed when cooked. I will say my salmon and jollof was well seasoned and tasty but I would say there are improvements needed especially with needing a disinfectant to clean rather than polish as after noticing this, it was a very uncomfortable experience. Very mixed feelings about trying again because the hygiene was poor and the service in-house was not what I would’ve hoped for or expected. A rating of 3 star is generous due to usual standard from them previously has been better as said when ordered online

Ordered on Deliveroo, the food was late and cold, called the restaurant for update and no one was picking up. When they eventually picked up I was given a wrong estimatation. Food eventually came and wasn't what I ordered. I asked for jollof rice and was given less than half a tub of rice. Was given rice and peas which is completely radiculous, if I wanted rice and peas I would have ordered that. Called in to ask what happend and the manager was so rude, shouting on the phone like I'm his child, so unprofessional! I've spent money and don't appreciate all that. Honestly I've heard wonderful things and I was so excited to order but wasn't a great experience. Wouldn't go back.
