Y Pant Cad Ifor Inn in Merthyr Tydfil

My wife and I came across this village pub whilst coming back from penyfan , we popped in for Sunday dinner and we were asked if we booked , to our delight the bar manageress managed to fit us in the large conservatory area . Within 2 minutes a young girl came over and took our order and within 10 mins had the best Sunday dinner to date , it was mouthwatering, the beef was so tender . When we were about to pay for our food we noticed it was cash only ( our fault for not looking because there was signs everywhere) and again the staff couldn't do enough for us they even gave us a lift to the nearest cashpoint. The manager was very knowledgeable about the area telling us about other walks in the area . We will be going back has its our new favourite pub . 10 out 10 from start to finish.

Went for my birthday with family.. we were seated in a small conservatory style room with tiny windows in 20°+ heat however we overlooked this and stayed optimistic.. when it came to food I ordered a sirloin cooked medium however it was overdone and had no seasoning on it whatsoever (not what you’d expect at all for £18.95), I forced myself to eat a small portion of the steak and also cut off a piece each for my family members to try to see if it was just me that thought it was terrible (the verdict was unanimous - it was the worst steak I have ever eaten, I’ve had better cooked in the house). My family handed it back to a waitress and was told no problem she’ll pass on the message, a few minutes later the (I assume manager??) and the chef come to the table and (in front of a room of 20+ people) basically say that they aren’t going to change the food out, insinuating that I had eaten ‘half of the meal’ 🤣 I had infact eaten a small piece of the steak and none of the rest. I told the ‘chef’ that to my understanding every other steak I’ve ever had was seasoned and pan fried, the meat was grey in colour after being cooked and had not been grilled or fried to a decent standard! My partner then to avoid embarrassment offered to pay full price again for another meal- I chose ham, eggs and chips which was an improvement. After how uncomfortable we were made to feel we decided to leave shortly after (I couldn’t get out of there quick enough) & upon paying the (again… manager??) said to my partner ‘your girlfriend shot herself in the foot because it didn’t say ‘seasoned’ steak on the menu’ A) what an appalling thing to say to PAYING CUSTOMERS (we still paid over £100 in total for food even though it was definitely the worst meal we’d ever had.. food and customer service) and B) I have never been to a restaurant/pub where they’ve had bland unseasoned steak (there wasn’t even salt and pepper on it) and by that account the menu should’ve said ‘unseasoned steak’. The (manager??) did end up deducting the price of the ham, egg and chips because it was the cheaper meal.. we still lost out on over £5 on a meal that was foul. And also discounted £5 because they charge £2.50 for tiny little thimble sized paper sauce pots and we had 2 (£2.50 for that amount of sauce is diabolical🤣). I only wish I had taken photos because words simply just don’t suffice. Not one of us cleared our plates and still left starving because we felt so awkward after everything. Amidst all this my 8 year old sister fell off her chair because it was wobbly and was screaming crying for over 5 minutes and NOT ONE member of staff came to assist or even ask if she was ok. And as the pub states cash only we were told a ‘bank transfer’ would suffice to which the money for the food had to be transferred to a personal account not a business account. All in all will never ever visit again. The only positive was that the young lady that seated us was lovely. I wish any business the best of luck in todays economy but I think when it comes to customer satisfaction you have to learn to accept criticism and make your customers feel welcome, I felt it met neither of those requirements.

Called in on Bank Holiday Monday. Sign outside CASH ONLY! Told by male behind the bar that the Chef had let them down, so only a limited menu! The place was stinking of bleach. We headed for the door and left rapidly!

We have been to the Pant Cad Ifor 3 times for their Sunday Lunch and its amazing.Loads of meat, plenty of choice of fresh veg, and huge portions, and piping hot. We wont go anywhere else now for Sunday Lunch. Great value for money, and lovely staff. Looking forward to returning in a couple of weeks. Best to book in advance as its very popular.

Regularly visit here with both friends and family - never really had any issues and food is nice enough. Don’t usually like to leave negative reviews for places, but can’t help but comment on the Barman’s incredibly rude attitude on a few occasions. Very arrogant and unpleasant. Don’t know the staff members name, he’s a tall man with dark hair. It does let the place down and it is a shame. Hopefully this can be looked into!

Visited today with a group of friends who had a load of issues last time they came (a year ago) but decided to give the place another go. We had to ask for ketchup 3 times as each time they bought over an empty bottle. I asked for pepper which never arrived. I ordered a mixed grill - the sausages were really cheap. My steak and gammon were undercooked so I sent them back. Around 15 minutes later my meal reappeared. Everything apart from the steak was ok but the steak was now very much over cooked and my chips were undercooked. The staff did give me a free desert. All in all this was a poor experience and we won’t be returning.

Asked for sauce, finally got some in the fourth bottle they brought.Burgers are cheap and greasy. Needed multiple napkins to clean up.Chips are undercooked and obviously frozen as middle still hard and cold.Steaks for our party came out looking cooked but were still mooing and roaming the plate. The gammon steak was also still raw in the middle.Meals all came out at different times.The only positive was the desserts... Well pre-made Ice cream which are just dropped into glasses.

Popped in for lunch on a Friday, no problem getting a table. Served quickly and the food choice was very good, especially the number of vegetarian options, I can recommend the glamorgan sausages. Good sized portions and tasty, hot food.

Not a hard place to find on the way to the golf course plenty of parking [of road] and an realy friendly welcome plenty of Beers and Lager to choose from and although not an extensive menu there was more than enough to choose from and at an affordable price my wife and I took the family there for a meal out nothing special we All had a lovely meal in a great atmosphere would certainly go there again and would recommend the Y PANT CAD IFOR INN for a good night out

We went for Sunday lunch as a group of 10 friends. Can't fault the service! The waitresses were friendly and the food was gorgeous! Real home cooked food and piping hot! I loved the fact that we all had our own little jug of gravy. The atmosphere was cosy and we could have stayed there all day. Looking forward to going back for Sunday lunch soon.

Called in after a walk. Few cheap pints 😀 ordered mix grill. Man o man absolutely stunning. Fabulous service, very friendly. Made fuss of our dog. Absolutely the best place in Merthyr for food

Family get together an ideal venue for approximately 40 family members a good location for us central ro all. The food was standard pub grub at a reasonable price all in all a good night.

Seems a nice pub, but I waited about 7 mins to get served as there was no one behind the bar, not particularly friendly staff and a strange and outdated policy of only paying by card if you spend over £10. Decent pint tho.

Today we stopped by to see if we could have Sunday lunch as we had just come from the nearby hospital, they were fully booked however we were shown a table and had a stunning beef dinner and dessert. We could not fault the service, we barely sat on our seats and dinner was delivered to our table.

Went for a meal on Thursday afternoon to celebrate our sons GCSE results. Waited an hour for our starters then a further 40 minutes for our mains. When they came the steaks were overdone. Ok, not great but cheap reasonable value for money

Fabulous Sunday dinner the selection of vegetables was amazing the amount of meat was more than I could eat well done and a choice of deserts well all in all a meal I would recommend

Fantastic food, and great value. A freindly pub with a great homely feeling. Came in for a family celebration and thouroughly enjoyed the Sunday lunch, huge portions of Veg to go with the meat and supurb roast potatoes.

Fantastic little spot. Great place. Stopped here with a family of 6 and a large dog. Very accommodating. Had a great table near the bar. The dog and us all had plenty of space. They provided water and treats for the dog. When ordering they were very helpful and were able to change our orders to our specific tastes. Food was good. Reasonably priced. Everyone was friendly. If we come to wales again we will pop back. Highly recommended.

Myself and my partner have visited a lot of different places in Merthyr for Sunday dinner and this takes first place hands down. Would go as far to say if I was on death row and had only 1 last meal it would be Sunday dinner from this pub! Lovely staff, great atmosphere and super fast service! Thanks guys :)

We were driving to Brecon feeling like some food when we happened upon this pub- well it looked more like a cafe but we soon realised that the main building was a friendly little pub. The menu had a good range of eats from sandwiches through to hearty full meals. We both chose ham egg and chips. The ham was well flavoured and the chips tasty and the egg was, well, egg! The meal was priced at a great value £7.50 downed with a glass of lager from the bar. Service was excellent and pretty prompt. We could have eaten at the bar, or outside on picnic tables but it was pretty crowded and the day was scorching so we opted to sit in the cafe. There was plenty of room to park in the attached parking area or on the roadside.

just popped in to see if they did food tonight - all menus on board, tables set. Stood at the bar - the person behind just looked up and put her head back down, carried on with her paperwork for a few minutes then i had to ask 'are you doing food tonight' - she looked up and said 'no'. Nice customer said 'she meant 'no sorry''. Haven't been for years, will never return awful customer service no wonder it's empty

always excellent here, i've never heard of anyone complaining for it, except maybe that there is too much!

This pub has a very nice friendly atmosphere and the service is pretty good. The food is always tasty and filling and I would recommend it.

Visited here after reading previous reviews, and was very pleased we did. Excellent value for money and food tasted lovely.

Called in here again while in the area, last visit was around 3 years ago. Still a good place to eat, great service, reasonable prices. Husband had 20 oz mixed grill (again....) all beautifully cooked, I had vegetable lasagne, salad and garlic bread - which was very nice. Very popular place, but plenty of seating.

Food outstanding! Services outstanding! What a friendly atmosphere with great food. Staff couldn't do enough for our family. Food was excellent and cooked to a high standard. Visited the Pant Cad Ifor on Bank Holiday Monday with family for an unexpected meal. As always, I was left happy.

Went here for a friends birthday meal. Lovely atmosphere, good service child friendly. Food was hot, generous portions and fair price. The chicken coujons were lovely and the lamb shank was excellent would definitely recommend.

Visited for a bite to eat having had to endure the perils of shopping at Cyfartha Retail Park. Have visited before and food has always been 'ok. We both opted for Plaice and chips. We were served supermarket breaded Plaice and oven chips with thrown together salad on the side. The food was edible but for £9.50 the quality was shambolic. This was highlighted to me even more having recently eaten Plaice at The Red Lion Llangynidyr which was beautiful for £7.50 and Baked Cod at Worms Head Rhossili for £10.50.

Prawn Cocktail served with small chip to bowl , followed by a chipped plate , then to finish off a big chip on my teacup right at drinking part !! Very unprofessional to serve food on crockery that is damaged. Hopefully after this review the crockery will all be checked and any chipped ones discarded?!

I've been going to the y pant cad ifor for a while now. We went there for my birthday back in October. I have such fond memories of this place. Cozy feel to the pub especially in the autumn. Fairly cheap and excellent hot chocolates....

Decided to come here instead of the cafe at the mountain railway. Had a good selection of sandwiches, jacket potatoes...

I opted for a roast chicken with salad, the salad was ok, but the half roast chicken was pe-cooked, but it seemed to have been rewarmed in a microwave, and didnt taste to great.

Went here for Sunday lunch, one of the best I've ever had. Plenty of meat and veg and everyone had their own gravy boat usually you have to ask for more great service lovely pub what more can I say just top marks all round

A small group of us arrived late on a Sunday night at 9.15pm for a few drinks. Myself, my partner and her father were hungry but the landlord informed us they weren't serving food that late on a Sunday. Eager to help us out the gentleman pointed us in the direction of a local Chinese 100 yards away and gave us permission to bring back the food to eat in the pub and he would provide us with the cutlery and napkins etc.Nothing seemed a hassle for him and I rate his kind service 5 Star.We all had a couple drinks each and everyone's pints were cold and fresh.We will definitely be back and at a time they will be serving their own food.

Myself, my wife and my mother had a roast beef Sunday lunch there. The service was immediate and the food was beautiful and excellent value for money. 10/10 will definitely be returning.

We had a roast dinner here before a trip on the Brecon Mountain Railway which is about 5 minutes walk away. The roast chicken dinner was delicious and complete with yorkshire pudding, mint sauce, roast and boiled potatoes and 7 different vegetables! To follow we had apple pie and custard, all home made and good traditional fare. The drinks were reasonably priced and the staff were cheerful and friendly. I would definitley recommend this to anyone who appreciates good simple traditional food.

Five adults 2 children booked in. Sat straight away. Was offered choice of 4 meats. Shortly after ordering food arrived. Healthy portion of meat with corresponding gravy in your own boat. (You can never have enough gravy ) Followed by 7 dishes of potatoes and vegetables. Yorkshire puddings and the most amazing roast potatoes. Stunning meal with friendly helpful staff. Even the chef came to check on us.Thank you so much for making our Easter to lovely. Will 100% recommend and WILL BE BACK

We had a large family group of 24 people which they catered for superbly, the food wad fantastic, perfectly cooked and plenty of it at a very reasonable price.The staff were fabulous and very courteous making sure that we were happy'When I am next in Wales and in this area I will definitely be returning!

Had Sunday lunch and was not disappointed. A generous portion of roast beef - gravy served separately in a gravy boat and 6 different veg in addition to the usual roasties and Yorkshire pud. Very enjoyable meal. If anyone visits the nearby Brecon Mountain Railway it would be a good place to eat. Only negative was that when we sat down at 2 p.m. they only had chicken or beef left on the menu. Clearly the ealrier eaters had taken up the other roasts. Didn't bother me though - I love a well cooked roast beef.

Nice rural pub, great menu and good prices for drinks and food alike - would have liked to have seen tablecloths and perhaps some table décor in the conservatory area as felt a little like a canteen but the pub section is very cosy. Would definitely return and the pub classics are well worth trying.

Had an amazing evening at the pub. Great location, with plenty of parking.Had prawn cocktail to start at just £3.35 and was very generous.I had the lamb shank which was £13.95 and cooked to perfection. Excellent value!The drinks were cheap (£3 a pint/ bottle) so after several pints, I had a cheap evening.Staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is great.Bar was open till late, which was great.!An excellent local pub.

Popped in here for food a few weeks back, didn't book but that wasn't a problem. Waitress was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for her or the chef. Would definitely visit here again.

Lovely lunch that we have every Thursday. Always have pleasant staff and it's a great place to spend the day. Food generally comes quickly and is always very nice with lots of options including a specials board. Desserts are homemade and very tasty.

Nothing is too much trouble for the Pant cadifor. It's a mixture of oldy world that oozes history and a bright conservatory with a choice to eat in the bar if you wish. Booking is always recommended. The food is fresh and served quickly considering its cooked to orde and there's more than enough on the plate. The desserts are to die for too..love going here in the winter to sit in front of the log fire with a glass of wine..

Really nice friendly place generally food was good and plenty full, except the chicken which unfortunately was so over cooked and dry. I needed a pint to rehydrate it. Partners food and starters were fine. Shame about the chicken.

We went here for our anniversary meal. We had the sharing combo for starters and omg what a combo it was. Absolutely huge. We struggled to eat it all . Then came the mains... and same again ... plenty of food on the plate and again struggled to eat it because there was so much of it. The food was very very nice indeed and very hot. We have never had so any chips on a plate before. We had the mix grill which is well worth the money and the bbq chicken topped with bacon and cheese. Beautiful.. very friendly staff. Definitely be returning

Lovely pub set In a lovely area. One of my favs. Wide selection of home made food and drinks, but my favourite has to be the cake selection, huge portions too. Staff are always welcoming and my 18mth year old loves it there. Well worth a visit.

Couldn't fault the friendly service & huge portions of food!This place is a good weypoint either prior to or post a visit to the picturesque Brecon National Park or the nearby Brecon Mountain Railway. It's also adjacent to Pant cemetery and I noticed a few funeral goers had made use of it's proximity.....Michelin starred this place isn't but it offers pretty good value for money should you be in the market for basic pub food.

Monthly we went there to celebrate our monthly pay. Sometimes we went there for lunch, a few colleagues only. When I finished my work in Merthyr, we had a real night out there. Food was absolutelly palatable, drinks were well measured and delivered with a smile. Easy to find (just follow "The Head of the Valleys Road") and do not miss it.

A large party of us went for the first time tonight.Fantastic place and friendly staff.We had a starter to share it said enough for 2 but I would say it was enough for 4.I had the 20oz mixed grill and normally a mixed grill is made up with scrappy looking bits of meat and a lot of fat, but not this one great selection of meet cooked just how I like it.Can't wait to come back.

Turned up for A cooked dinner and although it was two courses for £15 I was left disappointed. Food was warm and not hot. Meat was dry even with gravy over it, veg was bland and cooked with in a inch of its life. Won't be going again!

Went for sunday lunch. Lovely, warm atmosphere. Staff very friendly. Prices reasonable. Soup starter was tasty. Main I found bland and tasteless. Didn't have a chance for dessert as left after waiting for half an hour for someone to take our order.

Decided to give the place a try as heard good reports . Well I wish I haven't bothered because the hunters chicken I had was like if the chef had opened a pack of pre cooked chicken and put the cheapest cheese and bacon on top they could find and have the cheek to call it homemade . Frozen chips never a good sign . Will not be returning again.

Visited here for a birthday they booked as in for the wrong day, bad organisations, long waiting time for food.. We was all stuffed in a corner after we had a seat not all sat together.. By the time the food come too warm to eat as all so cramped together. Food was okay of what I could eat

This place is great. It has quality food for a good price. It's also a lot of food. Love going here with family and friends. And it has a lovely cosy feeling in the bar.

Not been here for a long time so was pleased to say the ambience of this lovely little pub had not changed. The log burner was roaring and the staff were more than friendly in getting us sorted out. The menu selection was ample - as were the portions of food when they arrived ! We didn't have to wait too long and the food arrived all together, piping hot. Very tasty and the service was excellent. And all at very reasonable prices that a lot of other pubs should look to. My only complaint is that the decor of the conservatory could do with a smarten up. But with this quality food at these prices and with excellent service its a minor gripe indeed. We shall be back when next in Merthyr. P.S. forgot to mention the beer is superb to and not at silly prices !

Visited on the 8th November 2015 as a family of eight (six adults and two children).Great friendly service and the food was fantastic. It's great value with the whole table (with four desserts) bill coming to £79 (excluding drinks)It's changed owners a few times over the past few years so if you've been previously give this place another try. One point (but I'm nit picking) would be if they had real chips and not frozen ones. In my opinion that would really make already fantastic food, exceptional. L

Went today for Sunday Lunch and was overall very impressed. The sunday lunch was huge for 6.95 and very nice overall, however thought the veg lacked a bit of seasoning and the mint sauce had too much vinegar in it. My girlfriend also found it quite cold and the food did seem to go cold quite quickly. Lots of people sat with their coats on which could have been avoided as there were two wood burners there but unlit. Overall I'd give it a very good 3 stars but could be excellent and the lunch was extremely good value.

Very good pub food, well presented. We were a group of about 25, even though some had starters and some didn't, we were not kept waiting too long. Very pleasant staff. I would go there again.

Have had several meals with friends and family over the years living in wales and have been overwhelmed with warm welcome, great service and quality food. Always a friendly bar experience , very cheerful bar tenders, certainly never fails to impress.

Y Pant Cad Ifor Inn - this is the best pub in Wales. Food delicious, great cosy atmosphere with the real fireplace and wingback chairs. The selection of home-made desserts will leave you spoilt for choice.The staff are fantastic, and make you feel like the most important person there, even if they are dealing with a busy bar full of people!

Me, my girlfriend and friends visit this pub regularly on the weekend for drinks and sometimes during the week for food in the evening. It is very cosy with a charming rustic feel to it. The staff are always excellently helpful and friendly. The food, for the price, has always been superb with very generous portions! And the drink selection is very good (they have spiced rum so I'm happy) As well as all this the Pant Cad Ifor is dog friendly and situated within walking distance of the Brecon Mountain Railway and stunning Pontsticill Reservoir and is a great place to rest your weary feet and re-fuel after a hard days trekkin'! Best pub in Merthyr by miles!

Visited today for my cousins 50th/Nana's memorial lunch and yet again a very warm welcome from the lovely staff. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals, my steak was cooked perfectly!! Thanks very much! See you again next August! 5*****

Really good food at a very fair price, not far from where i live. The cakes are HUGE and very well made. I would go time and time again, the quality is never anything other than excellent!

We had a lovely meal her today in lovely surroundings we were a party of five. Starters were well presented and very tasty. There was ample portion of meat with an abundance of vegetables all cooked to perfection. Deserts were lovely and our party thoroughly enjoyed there's.All in all a lovely meal well presented and very well cooked service was excellent price was very good and surroundings comfortable topped of with a couple of pints of Felinfoel bitter a thourly enjoyable afternoon.

I recently visited here as part of a birthday party. The food was good, reasonably priced as was the wine. The starter was a tad disappointing - £3.95 for 5 garlic mushrooms but the desserts (if I'd had room) looked lush. Was a bit weirded out by the "for display purposes only" sticky toffee puddings though. The restaurant was packed out which goes to show how popular it has become in the community.

This was my first visit and I was very impressed. The old pub section was full so we went into the restaurant side. The service was quick and friendly. The lunch menu had many choices including several 'specials'. We all ordered the place and chips. This was well cooked, not at all greasy and came served with peas and salad. We then had deserts chosen from the refrigerated display. It was all very good value for a pleasant lunch.

We ate here for my Great Grandmothers both birthday and it was very nice, the food wasn't too expensive but I must say it was well worth it.
