XS Restaurant in Derby

Lovely restaurant in Stuart Hotel. Food is very nice indeed. Of particular positivity was Katie (restaurant staff member) who went above & beyond to enable specific meal requirements and was outstanding in service & manner. Other staff were all so helpful, friendly, and assisting. Outside hotel is basic, not pretty, but the service and standards indoors make up for this in every way. Can't fault how we were looked after, and the onsite restaurant is a real asset, as was the staff member who looked after us so well. Firstly actually booking a date for the meal was problematic. When I phoned the booking could not be accepted and I was advised to do this via two email addresses. A booked date was finally agreed after much confusion between the two emails. On arrival at the hotel no spaces were available. On entering the hotel there was no one to greet at the restaurant so the hotel receptionist tried to assist. Finally someone arrived and we were seated and given a menu. We were advised we were not able to order the mixed grill or the 8oz sirloin steak (although 8oz steak was supposed to be included in our offer) - we could alternatively have a 4oz steak due to it being a groupon offer. We chose several options from the menu but were advised that most were not available at that time. We were eventually told we could have an 8oz sirloin steak but would incur a supplement but when queried were told there would be no supplement. Coke arrived in a can and no alcohol free lager at all was available. Our starters arrived but items were incorrect or missing from both. The main meals were ok but with a lot of confusion between the staff the actual length of time taken for our meal was two and a half hours which seems unacceptable for a two course meal. I would rate the service we received as 'very poor'. I would suggest the communication between Groupon and the hotel should be improved so customers know beforehand exactly what to expect.

Reasonably price and food is very good

Le poulpe une merveille ... Le tataki de bœuf parfait. Les desserts sont très bons et originaux par leur présentation. Seul bémol les prix .. un peu cher mais le cadre est magnifique. Bcp de monde les weekends ... Il faut réserver !

Ate here on a Friday night, last minute choice as the weather was bad and we were staying in the hotel and so took the easy option. The dining room is a decent size and reasonably laid out there were 9 other people in the restaurant when we arrived. the menu was quite varied with a mix of English and International choices. We chose lamb in plumb sauce with couscous and mangetout and a mixed grill. The lamb was okay, the couscous dry and bland. The mixed grill again was OK. The staff were very polite although not very knowledgeable about the menu choices and what comes with each dish, no offer of a steak knife for the grill, additional condiments etc. For dessert I had cheese and biscuits and my wife had chocolate and orange cheesecake. The cheese and biscuits had 4 cheese portions, some grapes and 4 biscuits for over £8 I would have expected to be offered a few more biscuits. The cheesecake did not taste nice and had a peculiar gloopy consistency, my wife could not eat it. The couple on the next table were complaining because the lady had been served and had eaten her dessert and her partner was still waiting for his. So in summary nice people, not a bad place, average food but with a bit of thought and effort it could be improved greatly.

This restaurant in the hotel was the best food we have ever had in any hotel and the staff was fantastic both for the evening meal and breakfast so most definitely going back

Tasty, prompt food with a nice modern decor. FYI we found best value nearby parking at Roundhouse Road, DE24 8JE!

Me pareció que el desayuno, que estaba muy buena y hace un cambio agradable de los desayunos buffet como es la norma en los hoteles estos días. Sí, tienes que esperar un poco más, pero vale la pena esperar. También podrá disfrutar de un desayuno continental, si lo desea.

I will start with the plus side first, the Staff are friendly, and make you feel at ease, and it has a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately for a Restaurant charging the prices they do, you expect the food to be top notch, this is where they fell down on our visit. My partner had the main course of a Lamb Curry, alas the Lamb was very very tough and chewy, the Narn bread was cold, and she just could not eat it. She called one of the staff over, and told him, and he did change her mains for the Poached Salmon, which was acceptable, I had the Build your own Burger, which was quite nice. For Dessert my partner had the Apple & Cinnamon Crumble, alas again, no taste of Cinnamon, and the Crumble was stodgy at best, and looked like it has been microwave. Also it stated Saturday Night was 10% off, when we received the bill, the 10% had not been taken off, and we had to ask for the 10% off as advertised, not good. Maybe a New Chef is required, or maybe a trained one. Shame really, as this place, with the right cooked food, would be a gold mine.

We only had breakfast (standard hotel price) but the food was plentiful and well cooked. sadly they seemed a little understaffed.

Lush garlic mushrooms, less good Boeuf Bourgignon, ice cream dessert not on menu cheerfully supplied. Nice quiet restaurant, cheerful, helpful staff. Would happily dine there again.

Nice food off either menu. Tried the burgers, fish, nachos - all very good. Reasonable value for money too.

Service was excellent but then I was the first arrival. Duck pate and lamb chops were very good. Would definitely return.

A very nice meal but overpriced. The curries are very good and well made. The one thing they need to look at is the vegetarian option, there is only one.

The food was nice but they had run out of the buffet and not filled it up also our table hadn't been wiped and we Waited ten mins 2 get it

This is my personal opinion on one bad meal. I had ordered the seafood spaghetti which I did not enjoy at all. The rest of the menu looks good and other diners seemed very happy. My complaint was dealt with excellently and without fuss by very professional staff.

Daughter joked hope portions arnt extra small, they were, but worse bland. Jerk chicken oh dear, 1/4 chicken £10 yup 1/4 not 1/2 full £4 smart price chicken makes £30 profit and thats being generous with the sides, waitressing, lighting cutlery etc

I bought the voucher for afternoon tea off Amazon Local the cost was £14 for two people and it said the price was normally £45.50! what a lie, 14pence would have been too much as the only place the excuse for afternoon tea should have been served was in the bin! The voucher said we would get a glass of Pimms which we didn't get. The sandwiches were disgusting, they had obviously been made hours before and put in the fridge uncovered so they were all dried up. The fillings were the cheapest you can buy, grated cheese, egg mayo, cucumber and finally tuna which tasted cheap. As I own a sandwich shop I know what I'm talking about and if I sold this to my customers I'd been shut down within a week! The coffee was some cheap basic crap and we only got the one pot, didn't even get asked if we wanted anymore, not that we would have but the opportunity should have been there. There were a few crisps thrown on the sandwiches and even these tasted past their sell by date. The cakes were nothing to shout home about either. I often go for afternoon tea to Netherstow House in Lichfield which is top class, I think this hotel needs to visit there to see how it's done as I think what was served today would even be turned down at a dogs picnic!!

One of the best meals my husband and I have had. It's such a shame that this restaurant is not as busy as it should be. The food was plentiful, the service was great and even when I asked to be moved to sit next the radiator, it was no problem. I would really like to see XS thrive as it truly deserves. Without a doubt we would eat here again. Maybe an open evening for the local businesses wouldn't go a miss?

For starters, meals are small. I had to order double portions so it doubles the price and ends up being £22 per meal. The waitress yesterday told me she was not allowed to replace potatoes with vegetables. After I insisted due to my food intolerance, she made an exception. My waiter today brings my grilled chicken breast so dry so i can lift it up off my plate by holding only a small corner of it. Its a piece of wood. The grill was so dirty that I had my meal covered in coal particles. The food looked hazardous. When I complained and said that I needed to wash it before eating, they took it away and brought back in a few minutes - washed. I had a choice to starve at 10pm or eat that washed chicken and write this review. I ate it. They still managed to put vegetables as extra on the bill.I'm not going back to this place for dinner ever again.

Excellent choice of food, great quality, we had 11 tapas dishes. Try the meatballs in chilli they are amazing. Service very good.

The variety on the menu made choosing difficult, although when I settled on my meal, I was not disappointed. The service was efficient and pleasant.

Not a lot I can say about this restaurant, apart from it is some of the worst food I have ever eaten. We had purchased a groupon voucher for a tapas meal. It was most definately not tapas, and included what appeared to be paxo stuffing balls and frozen party food from iceland (not to impune iceland). It was all quite tasteless. Please do not waste your money by going here.
