Friendly welcoming staff were covid aware and brewed a great latte to take away. If you prefer real coffee to a tea shop it’s definitely worth popping off the main road to take a short stop here.

We found this place by chance and stopped for morning coffee/tea and a slice of lemon drizzle cake. Delicious cake, excellent service and such a warm friendly welcome. We sat outside with our 2 dogs. Would recommend.

Wondering around Winkleigh we came across this cafe and we took the opportunity to have a hot drink. I chose a piece of local tea bread with butter and it was the best tea bread I have ever had. A selection of cakes, plus a menu of savoury dishes. Delightful little cafe with crisp tablecloths and china.

Very pleasant stop for cake and coffee (or Victorian lemonade, if you prefer). Some pavement chairs in the sun, a very personal service and good humour. And cake tasty.

My other half rather enjoyed this place but I wasn't too impressed. It's not particularly clean and the decor is rather at the rococo end of homely. The food was Ok but as you see from the other reviews it's a chalk and cheese kind of place. The Owner, front of house was abrupt but the locals in there seemed to love him and his gossip! I don't think my soup was tinned though! If it is then it's your assurance of quality. 3 stars because we couldn't agree... LOL...

We visited and ate at Wright and Proper in April. The soup was clearly a Heinz soup (Bacon and Lentil) with a few additions by the cook such as a 'raft' of brown lentils. This led us to suspect the fish pie, which could well have been an Iceland product with a few additions such as some broccoli and a sprinkling of Paprika. It took twenty minutes to come up with the soup and fish pie. The menu prices would be fair if the ingredients were an original/homemade source but not for off-the-shelf supermarket purchases. The small cafe is well presented, decorated and clean and provides a good place to maybe have a coffee but a little more honesty on the source of the menu is needed. We couldn't describe the service as effusive, exactly! There are two pubs in the village (one shut for decorating when we visited) and parking is limited in Winkleigh.

The owners have had fun decorating and dressing this little cafe, which means that it has a lot of character. The food and drink is presented and served to a high standard. Personal service. Winkleigh is lucky to have this coffee shop.

Having stopped off at Winkleigh on our way to Bideford, one morning, we came upon this delightful little cafe. It was charming, friendly and relaxed with vibrant decor and it seemed to be the hub of the community. On the occasion of our visit there were some interesting items of furniture for sale. Very enjoyable cup of tea and snack.

To be honest, we only popped in to grab a quick coffee and cake, during a visit to Winkleigh for fairly mundane reasons (as we live quite near by). My cappuccino was very nice... and the lemon drizzle cake was splendid! It seemed like a friendly little place with pleasant staff and a good atmosphere. As it was a sunny day we took time to have a wander around the village, realising with some surprise what a very lovely place it is, with lots of pretty thatched cottage and amazing views across to Dartmoor from the churchyard. So, if you're visiting the area yes please do have a stroll around Winkleigh and pop into this cosy cafe while you're there - I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

We visited on a Tuesday during the Easter school holidays, at 1pm, we were a family of myself, an 80 year old lady and 3 small very hungry children, I asked if they could accommodate us, and was told in no uncertain terms, NO I cannot!! No advice of anywhere else to eat or to try, just a rude little man with a bad attitude. We would of happily sat on the floor as we'd travelling for hours! We then went to the village store and bakery where we met a lovely lady who advised us we could find somewhere to eat and drink and rest our legs at D and S supplies just on the airstrip, where we were treated like kind human beings, not like a nuisance which we were clearly at this one and only place to eat in the village. On speaking to quite a few locals in the village it's safe to say the majority of winkleigh folk were absolutely delightful, BUT not the rude little self important man at Wright and Propper, I think a change of name for the cafe to something more appropriate is needed!

I was a little cautious about going here given the very negative comments of last year (which in my experience were wrong) but it was raining and I was on my bike and needed a coffee and the other local places were further away. First impressions are confusing. The place looks like a restaurant, with at least one large table set for dinner, at 11am. That said I was well received, the coffee was the good side of average, the tea bread very good. All the available tables were full of what appeared to be locals, which I guess is recommendation in itself. I don't go to Winkleigh often but I would be very happy to return here.

As the title suggests, this is more a small eatery for those who 'do lunch'. However, we went to a small wine tasting evening with friends. We all had a set 3 course meal and the wine was provided by a local business to match. Great night and the food was really good, the two owners were attentive and a laugh. Overall, a nice enough place to visit for a light lunch. Not one for the local builders!

I can't think of a nicer place to be, the owners were most entertaining. As for bickering, they seemed to delight in cheeky banter with everyone, but mostly themselves! Perhaps sarcasm and wit is lost on some. The service was second to none, with a full range of coffees available one normally only finds in much more provincial centres. The ciabatta was my favourite, and the cake variety meant getting a variety and sharing them... Perhaps it's the Cornishness of the owners that's at fault. I and all my tribe had a lovely time with them and would love to come back again and again.

I can't agree more with the last reviewer. Not exactly a warm welcome and the two gentlemen who I presume were the owners seemed to spend most of their time bickering with each other. Winkleigh is a lovely village and deserves much better than this!

This place opened originally in about May 2012 and ran out of steam by Christmas of the same year. It then lay fallow for the next six months. However Wright and Proper has now been taken over by new people who have a great deal of experience in running a food outlet. There is no connection to the previous tenants! They have a proper coffee machine, so it is now possible to have latte, cappuccino or espresso, with all the variations. Food is simple, freshly prepared and reasonably priced - perhaps a little less fine cuisine but straightforward good food. Filled Ciabattas, salads, platters and light meals. Also yummy cakes and puds. I just hope that there is sufficient business for them in this charming but out of the way village.

We live in Exeter and decided to have a ride out to Winkleigh one weekend. We stumbled across this cafe and thought we would try it. First impressions were good but things quickly went downhill. We were greeted by the owner as if we were a nuisance, which was swiftly followed by coffee that I wouldn't even drink at home. We also suspect there was an infestation of mice as where we were sat there were droppings around on the floor. Quite frankly we were appalled and I for one am pleased to see that the business has since folded, which is no great surprise. Hopefully someone competent and understanding of the local market takes over and shows the old tenants how well a small business such as this can do in such a beautiful village.

When this was open this little place was charming and had very good food, albeit not exactly cheap. However if something is good we don't mind paying. The problem was that the opening was very erratic and a number of times various friends and also myself turned up for a coffee, cake, snack, meal etc and found it closed and a message on the door asking us to go down the road to knock at his door if we really wanted a coffee!! Unfortunately a combination of poor health and a lack of enthusiasm seems to have caused it to close (since Christmas) and they are now looking for a new tenant!!

My 17 year old daughter visited with a friend and couldn't wait to share her discovery! Wright & Proper was every bit as charming as she had described. An appealing mix of 40's tea-room with an Aubrey Beardsley twist! Now I'm taking my GF's......the journey being well worth it.

Tourist trap! Food was nice but absurdly overpriced, £100+ for 4 fish and chips and drinks, crazy price considering you have to collect your own food and it's served in paper trays without proper cutlery. Boutique restaurant price for takeaway food.

This is a great meeting place with a hiden garden out the back , a real locals pub Brian and shirley always make you welcome and have a great sense of humour. Theirs always a story or tale , they only take money not cards , but the ATM machine is very local. a good mix of ales, beers and spirits.
