Nice bar, lovely staff but half the draft beers off as run out, can’t see fridge options as no lights and wine warm as fridges not on!

This was our first visit to the wrey arms. The positives firstly, the lady at the bar was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble! The food was reasonable though the bread on the fish sandwich was soggy as if maybe defrosted, the menu options are basic. The negatives are my glass was pretty mucky and the pub does smell like old spilt beer, a little dingy to be honest. The menus would’ve looked nicer if laminated etc rather than crumpled print outs. Just a couple of areas for improvement

We stayed for the weekend and had a great time! The staff were competent, efficient, effective and extremely friendly. The bedroom, bathroom was clean and tidy, we had tea, coffee, milk ,shower gel, shampoo, soap, towels etc The bar tender lady was extremely polite and friendly, the food was hot and tasty we had fish, chips & peas for £10.45, which was brilliant! This was a budget weekend and we were delighted with the price. The live music was good too! After 11 pm it was time to retire to bed and we were pleasantly surprised at how quiet it was. We would definitely recommend and come back again too!

We booked a Sunday roast here thinking it would be a pleasant time but we were highly disappointed food was under seasoned cold and over cooked served by a scruffy chef who tried flirting with my girlfriend the whole time. Yorkshire puddings clearly by aunt bessy. The beef looked like it had been cooked at 400 degrees over night and the turkey wasn't much better, it was clearly frozen and left over from christmas. Do not visit

Our favourite day of the week is now Wednesday. If you have not visited the Wrey for thier midweek carvery then you are missing out on the best value lunch in town. Just £8 for a huge portion of Beef, Pork or Turkey with as many veg as you can fill your plate with, all well cooked and tasty. Having eaten your fill you are then served a dessert included in the price! You can have the hot option or the infamous Wrey Sundae. We have been so many times now and never had a bad meal. The staff are friendly and chatty and always pleased to greet us. Nothing is too much trouble. Adam the chef is a huge asset to the Wrey, his humour and cheeky smile are all part of the fun of our visit. Gone are the days when the Wrey was a student dive, its now the best lunch spot in town for hungry folk, families or budget conscious folk who can still enjoy a hearty meal out.

Visited the Wrey Arms for a fund raising quiz night. We arrived early as we wanted to eat. We waited at the bar for over 10 minutes before being served, the bar person then said that she was on her own tonight and there were in excess of 70 people at the quiz alone so service was very very slow. We placed our food order which arrived eventually. Between the 6 of us there was a fatty greasy gammon steak, microwaved jacket potatoes, and fish which although tasted ok wasnt very hot and pots of peas which were multi shades of green and cream! Not a place I shall re-visit.

There are pubs that promote themselves as gastro pubs where you get fussy food at high prices. Then there are pubs that sell good quality basic pub grub at sensible prices. The Wrey Arms is the latter. Add to that the great landlady, lovely staff, friendly locals and good beers then you have it made. Our dog was also in his element being fussed over. Yup would definitely call again if in the area.

However, the new management have come in and it is even better than before. The sunday lunch is very nice, the staff are very friendly and the pub is extremely family friendly. I struggle to think of another pub in Barnstaple town that has any sort of play area for the kids. Ours love it and love the pub. The beer is good and the prices are reasonable particularly as they are tied to the always difficult Enterprise chain. The only criticism is one that has come from friends and family when they have visited and that is that when move between the two bars the smell of the gents loos is a bit strong. All things considered, one negative is very positive and everything else has been clean and tidy.

We recently moved near to The Wrey Arms and while moving popped in for a drink. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and so decided to go back for the Sunday carvery. We walked in and there was nobody else in the restaurant, it obviously meant we got served quickly but more to the point, once we'd tried the food, it came as a complete shock. The price is good and I can honestly say it was superb. We had 2 adult and 2 child meals with desert and drinks and paid £42 and the quality of the food was very good indeed, so much so that we returned the following weekend for an equally good experience. There were more people the following week but the staff were just as attentive and polite. We will certainly be returning with friends and family for a nice, relaxed Sunday lunch. Our only other experience of a carvery while in Barnstaple was at The Cedars and we would choose The Wrey Arms over that hands down.

I have never as yet given a bad review on this site but unfortunately I am now. My sister her husband and my dad had booked Bed and Breakfast at the wrey after we had been told how nice it now looks and on reading the wonderful reviews on this site. BUT after paying well over £32 per person per night the rooms were so so bad, Apart for the new carpet in my sisters room, the sheets on the beds were so thin you could see through them in places, the windows were last cleaned when Nelson had two eyes, the shower head was hanging of the wall, the tele didn't work, nobody cleaned the room ( they were told by the bar staff if they stayed a week then someone would clean the room) they left the dirty cups and didn't replace with clean or top up the tea tray ( my sister had to ask for this and was just told to top it up herself from the supply room) and to end it all when asked what time breakfast was they were told 12 noon cos that's the time the chef came in!!! We had expected to stay for a wonderful evening meal ? The chef had gone home at 6 because the management wern't there and so he had the time off. I could just keep going on but I think you get the drift. On the positive side YES the pub looks really good from the outside money has been well spent, If when we phoned to make the booking we had been told they were in the middle of re decoration and that the rooms were not up to scratch you could of forgiven them for lots of things although CLEANLINESS only costs some soap and water, We will be sending a letter of complaint not only to the Wrey arms but also to the local tourist office. All the time we were there Nobody from the management was around to great , say goodbye to you, how were things, or anything.

My husband, myself and 12 year old son went to the Wrey arms a couple of weeks ago and wasnt really sure what to expect. We were very pleased with the service, the food and the staf. The food was simalar to what you would get at a 'table table, Brewers Fayre' etc but much better (there wasnt a bit of grease in site) The portions were good too which pleased the husband. Priced very reasonably I might add.

Booked a week in advance, party of 14 for a friends birthday meal. Food started to arrive an hr after ordered, dish by dish, some meals didn't even make it! The food was truly disgusting, either "nuked" or deep fried cheap, nasty rubbish... The staff were even less palatable, the ignorant, clueless barman and "Klondike Kate" the microwave/fryer operator (chef/cook would be an insult to anyone who could cook a decent meal!).... She was obviously irritated by the fact that everyone complained about the dire food and poor service, that she became quite aggressive and shouted at her customers and staff, refunded a couple of meals and threw us out!!!! Couldn't run a bath!!! I only gave it a 1 because of the car park!

Haven't been here for a long time but decided to have lunch as it was our Anniversary. The service was excellent, very friendly and the food was superb! The new children's play area was ideal for our son as he always gets bored but he loved it and the sun was shining! Ideal for families or anyone who wants a good meal.

Over the last 12 months this pub has been transformed, it's lovely to have a local pub that's so family orientated. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough for us.. Beautiful food, great service. Great atmosphere in the evening especially at weekends. All in all a great place to eat, drink and socialise

Local boozer that has had a succession of people try to turn it around without success. Fine for a quick pint but would not consider eating there. Tend to find the more unsavoury types propping up the bar.

We booked lunch for 25 people following a family funeral, having made two personal visits to book and confirm menus and 'phoned to confirm again the evening before. See you tomorrow they said! When we arrived we were told that they had written the booking in for the wrong date. The staff seemed to have neither the ability nor the inclination to do anything about it. They didn't even apologise. Thankfully we were able to relocate to the nearby Cedars Inn who were able to provide a delicious spread at very short notice, in a lovely setting and at a third of the price!

I frequent this place for the free wifi, coffee and parking. Yes the decor is getting on a bit but I go into pubs that are well decorated and get a cold to non-existent welcome and I always get a warm welcome at the Wrey. I get good coffee and lovely sandwiches but it is what it is; it's not the Ritz and never will be but give people a chance while they're trying to turn it around. Anyway, I'm surprised you're able to frequent it from New Zealand... Makes me question the validity of your review....

The place has been going down hill for years , changes owners every 5 mins and none of them have managed to turn things around in there . The locals are all thugs so you can never have a quiet drink in there or even a quiet meal!!! .

We stopped here as our normal hotel was fully booked. We had a meal and a few drinks, couldn't fault the food. When we got to our room things went pear shaped!! Our TV was about the size of an I pad mini with no control box so we had 1 channel to watch, the thermostat on the shower didn't work so it was either boiling hot or freezing cold !! We had no coffee making facilities and the heating didn't work!! To cap it all they charged us £65 for these pleasures!! Avoid like the plague !

We visited the red barn on our first night of a 7-day break! The restaurant is clean, staff are really friendly and the food was good. We often visited for a drink during our stay and the atmosphere was always really good! Great location and worth a visit!

Crap, manager standing at tables giving away shots to girls while doing nothing while the staff work their arses off. Seen it a few times now, seen managers make staff cry, the way they talk to their staff is gross, needs looking at seriously. Go to the panniers, new management and way better

Had a really super meal last Sunday. We were here on holiday but if local would come back every week! Nice children’s playground outside, crayons and colouring packs. Our dog was welcome and blankets provided for them to sit on. We had a carvery and it was one do the best I’ve been too. Really lovely variety of vegetables done well. Beautiful meats and very generous serving. Pavlo the chef I think it was and Michelle made us feel welcome and they were so friendly. Definitely worth a visit.
