Hotel very comfortable but no sockets in bathroom for charging your toothbrush. They kindly gave us an adapter to use while we were there. Nowhere to walk our dog nearby. Had to drive to Grange over Sands.

Lovely place to stay. Great for dog lovers. I stayed in a lodge which was great for my dog because there was no chance of him straying. Each of the lodges are fitted with a gate so I could get on with things without the worry of him wandering off out of sight. Staying at a nearby campsite and walked in for a pint. The staff were unwelcoming and the atmosphere in this very dated hotel was awful. Our room was very comfortable, very clean, nice en suite, a very comfy big bed with good pillows. Breakfast was good, juice, cereal, fruit platter, and an English cooked breakfast. We ate in the conservatory twice during our stay at Meathop Fell Caravan Park. The waiter/manager was very pleasant and efficient and we felt quite safe during COVID Protection times. The food was delicious, especially the onion soup and lamb tagine on the first night. The second night I had scampi and chips and partner had beef burger, again lovely food and well presented. Highly recommended and would be a reason to return to the caravan park. The lodges in the grounds of the hotel looked really nice.

We visited here several times as it’s a short walk from where we were staying. Each time we visited, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The children were able to play freely in the gardens and enjoyed exploring some of the little wooded areas, looking for ‘treasure’ and making friends with other children. Drinks are reasonably priced. We only ate in once and were very happy with the choices, quality and the quantity (which is quite substantial). Our youngest grandchild only wanted vegetables so the chef provided a (huge) plate of new potatoes, peas and broccoli. The manager kindly then put the leftovers into a plastic container for us to take back to our accommodation. 4 adult main meals, 3 child main meals, 2 rounds of drinks = £104.

If you are looking for a Faulty Towers themed dining experience then this is the place for you. Rude managers, run down restaurant and gardens, no atmosphere or character. Expected Basil to appear at any moment. Saving graces are that the beer and food are reasonable. Can't see it lasting long under current management which would be a great shame as the Woodlands has so much potential.

We were staying at the nearby caravan park and as it was our first night we thought we would treat ourselves to tea out. We arrived at 5:15 , the bar area was full (only a little area to sit in) and we saw the sign that said no children in the bar area so went through to the restaurant. The waiter was folding napkins and informed us that food wasn't served until 6:00 so we said no problem we will have a drink and is there somewhere we can wait, he cleared his napkins off the table he was working at and asked us to take a seat (on four small bar stools - not good with a 4 year old!) We thought we would be moved when we ordered our food but no we had to stay where we were!! Food was delicious and priced just right. The signs outside said that the restaurant is open to non residents but we felt like we were intruding especially being put on that small table and bar stools when there were plenty of tables available to be sat at!!

Myself and my wife were stopping at the adjacent Meathop caravan site and this hotel is ideally situated a two minute walk away...it appears Victorian and is immaculate inside and out...the staff are faultless..and there is even the odd real ale on which I appreciate but didn't opt for on this occasion....The food is very good and well priced...but a few minor details make me doubt it is worth a five star......my gammon was beautifully cooked and quite plump yet very difficult to cut with the blunt instruments provided....provide steak knives or similar please without asking....secondly my gammon came with sugared pineapple...why would you want to put sugar on a piece of fresh sweet pineapple? I gave it my wife who has a sweet tooth and even she found it too much..and lastly I had an Irish liquor coffee which was lovely except that the cream was straight out of the fridge...so freezing cold cream against hot coffee and whisky..not good..warm the cream next time please....other than that I would give it five stars because the food is well priced, good quality and well cooked..

The whole point of going out for a meal in a restaurant is that you should enjoy your experience from the start to the finish. We went anticipating a good meal because of the rave reviews on TA.Ok the car park was free - good start.Once at the restaurant entrance, the décor resembled a cheap greasy spoon café with bare wooden table tops.So lets analyse why I should give the restaurant one star by dissecting what we had & what we paid for.Starters: We both had the Blue Cheese, fried bacon & lettuce at £4.75 pp. a little steep for what we received but nothing to write home about. My wife had the frozen fish, chips & mushy Pease which was bland & boring.I had the roast Lamb Rump with veg & chips at £12.95 which was tasteless, tuff & chewy, but at least the portion size was adequate. The bill was £37.95 with drinks which I have no qualms paying if we enjoyed the food but as we didn't the whole experience was 100% negative. All in all we would not recommend this restaurant for the above reason. But don't let me put you of.

We recently called in here for dinner. It was the first time we'd been to the Woodlands and found the hall, bar, lounge and dining area quite attractive and very relaxing. Having ordered our meal we were shown in to the conservatory area where there was just no atmosphere and the room echoed. We felt as if we were having dinner in a canteen - it had that kind of feel to it, what a pity there were no curtains at the windows nor rugs on the wooden floor to absorb that echo. The meal was quite nice, but by the time we'd finished our main course we just wanted to go home. On the way out we walked through the carpeted and curtained dining room which was already being set up for the residents breakfast. Had we been allowed to dine there then I think my review would have been much better - atmosphere, epecially with dinner is so important and sadly, that night it was totally lacking and let the place down.

Excellent steak - tasty and tender with lovely peppercorn sauce served separately so you can put as much or as little on as you prefer. Desserts looked lovely and were a generous size. Excellent value too

what a find we had a friend who was staying on an adjacent touring caravan site and they told us about the restaurant. A bit off the beaten track but well worth a visit. The food is excellent and the restaurant has a lovely conservatory.

We stayed at the local CC site Meathop Fell, we had three meals at this hotel during during our stay. We found the food to be excellent, service first class and the staff were great. We had our two red setters with us, Molly & Cassy and they were were made most welcome. A truly great hotel I a rural location.

We had 2 excellent meals here. They catered wonderfully for my dairy free diet, I didn't feel like an outcast! The best dairy free dessert I have ever been offered in a restaurant, EtoniMess minus the cream. If Woodlands can do it why can't anybody else?

We've stayed in the area near the Woodlands on many occasions but until last night we had never tried the restaurant as this hotel. It was a quiet Sunday evening in early November so the place perhaps lacked a little atmosphere, but we were made very welcome and the food was excellent. Four of us dined - two lamb Henry's and two salmon fillets with sweet chilli and red pepper sauce. All meals were beautifully presented, were nice and hot and of good portion size. We had starters and main courses and were too full for desserts. Will definitely return.

We were here for a meal on the 12th of this month and thoroughly enjoyed it. Pleasant staff and comfortable waiting area. We all had different meals and all said how good they were. I had the steak pie and, unlike me, ,cleared the plate. The pastry was light and just enough to cover it ,the lean meat was so tender it just fell apart. I have been disappointed in the past with Pub steak pies ,but not this one.I would highly recommend this restaurant. A tip for anyone who is staying on the caravan site ( as we were) ,take your torch for the walk .you will need it!

We live 4 miles from this hidden gem. Many times we have said we will go and then changed our minds. The welcome and conversation with the owner was instant on arrival. We had a drink in the bar while choosing from a well presented, good choice menu. We chose to only have the main course, I had Coq au Vin and my wife had the Steak and ale pie. We were offered a choice of potatoes and a medley of veg. The presentation of the meals was beautiful and HOT!Portions were more than adequate so we were glad of our decision to forego starters. Lovely conversation with another member of staff who obviously thoroughly enjoyed working there. We shall be returning and be prepared to try a 2 course meal next time. Our big mistake here is we haven't been before when we have had the opportunity.

We called at the hotel for an evening meal as we were renting a property near by.When we called in to book the meal the hotel receptionist showed us the restaurant and asked which table we would prefer, this was a bonus. We needed wheel chair access so they opened up one of the external doors to the conservatory to give us easy access to our table. The staff were very friendly and attentative. The food was very well cooked and tasty, my Lamb Henry fell away from the bone and the Sea Bass with Halibut was cooked just right. The desserts were a real treat, crepes suzete with banana's and ice cream. The food and drinks were very reasonably priced for the quality and standard. We would recommend a visit if you are staying in the area.

Cask ales, great bar snacks, good hosts David and Jane. All drinks prices are the cheapest in the area. If you fancy a game of pool do it.

We were stopping at he caravan site near by, there was a menu left in the information hut on site in which they stated that dogs were welcome in bar area but on arrival we checked that this was right only to be surly told we had to sit at he outside tables. This was ok as it was a nice evening but there was forecast rain and did leave us with concern. I then went to bar to order drinks to get the same surly service and be told sharply that they would come to table and take orders when I asked if we would need to order at bar as we were not in restaurant (I noted that the bar was not total full as stated to my partner as the reason for not allowing us in with dogs). The waiter came to table shortly after I got the drinks with menus and was very polite quite the opposite to the bar man, he also told us the soup of the day and there was no items missing from the menu. We both ordered pork spare ribs for starter, my partner ordered braised steak and I had steak and ale pie for our mains. The starer came he then brought the cutlery shortly after finger bowls and bread, the ribs were nicely done and of good quality but the sauce did leave a bit to be admired and tasted very much like watered down HP sauce. The braised steak was tender and cooked well, the mash potato did what it said although good no better than average but almost if not worth the cost of £10.95. The pie was not fantastic but good the veg side was not over cooked. Would I return? Yes but only if stopping at the caravan club site and wanted a drink with my meal as it is within short walking distance. Value for money? Just about but not so much as to rave about or complain about. As an after note the service from the floor staff was good but as the bar man is the first one we talked to as they say first impressions last

Just returned from a meal at the Woodlands. We had chicken noodle soup and delicious ribs for starters followed by steak and ale pie and pan fried chicken in Stilton sauce. Meal was served efficiently and piping hot. A selection of fresh vegetables was welcome since so many restaurants nowadays don't serve them. Overall we would recommend you give it a try.

Visited whilst staying at the caravan site. There's lovely squashy sofas in the bar area, so comfortable we almost didn't want to move when our table in the beautiful conservatory restaurant was ready for us. The food and service was excellent and reasonably priced, a two course meal and two drinks for under £50. Well recommended.

Looking up toward the Woodlands it looks quite imposing. On arrival it seems, to me, like a family seat that may at sometime been a hotel but now just a pub. There are home printed signs, or so they seem, directing you to the bar steering you away from the sweeping wooden staircase. The bar itself is tiny with the seating area furnished with cheap tables and chairs. There is a surprising selection of real ales and ciders which are incongruous with the surroundings. The bar staff were friendly and gave us some ice as the cottage was without a freezer (co-op sold out!). It was odd seeing customers rip snacks from the hanging packaging, but I guess honesty still lives. The beer was good and also cheap, no wonder it was busy.Could be a nice location in summer.

It's worth going just to remind yourself how bad pubs were 30 years ago. No atmosphere, staff surly although beer was ok.

Booked here for a family birthday and we all came away feeling it was fantastic value for money spent ,with the flavours, and generous portions of food speaking volumes. Staff serving us were very attentive and smiley (which is rare in places!) I don't live too far from here but after looking on their website I'm planning on coming back to stay in one of their lodges in January , and I'm sure to be eating in their restaurant again!

We stayed nearby in the caravan park and walked up to the hotel one evening for a drink - all the staff were very friendly and on looking at the menu thought it was worthwhile a visit for Dinner while we were there as well.We booked a table and this is advisable over a weekend as it is very popular. The food was well prepared and presented and although it was not a massive menu there was plenty to whet your appetite and to choose from.We were four adults and two children and all were catered for. The price was good value, the food was an excellent quality and the staff were very attentive.

Great food and service as ever. The small fish and chips is still large! This is a lovely and welcoming pub close to Sizergh castle.

We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.

First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.
