Wonderful place. Small roads that were interesting to drive on. However, the room was really lovely and the afternoon tea was sublimely good. Hill top was right next door too. A really great place with several wonderful walks around it.

We had the loveliest cream tea out on the terrace overlooking the hills and being serenaded by birds and soft sheep sounds. The scone was cut in half and filled with clotted cream, jam and sliced strawberries—absolutely delicious! And the pot of tea was perfect too! I have no idea why we had the entire place to ourselves. It’s so good, everyone should go there!

The highlight of our visit was the friendly staff. We went for an evening meal which was average. The soup was ok, my shin of beef and mash was delicious, however the rump steak and chips was very disappointing. The steak was lacking in flavour, and the chips/wedges were undercooked and below par. We did provide this feedback at the time. The wine was put int he table unopened or poured, which is easily rectified with some training, however the waitress was great and very friendly. It’s a shame, as the place is lovely and was let down by poor quality food, at the price we paid for the meal I would have expected more.

We visited this hotel yesterday not for an overnight stay but to have afternoon tea, and can thoroughly recommend it! A group of 6 adults, and 1 overtired and slightly grumpy toddler, they were able to accommodate us brilliantly. The Lounge and bar area was tastefully decorated, and the dining room where we were seated for our tea was warm and inviting. The staff were attentive, and we were served drinks straight away. When the food was brought out, it looked beautiful on the serving trays and tasted superb. Highlights were the egg mayonnaise sandwiches and the fresh scones & cream! Nothing was too much trouble despite us asking a variety of different questions, even the chef popped out to meet us before we left! We’re all heading back for breakfast today and thoroughly looking forward to it. Wish we’d found you earlier

The most disappointing afternoon tea of my life. No delicate sandwiches, just white mini baguette half slices with various toppings- such as sweaty ham and chicken cubes similar to a Gourmet can’s contents. Cakes again were mini offerings, tasteless and from a very poor commercial source. The dull and only offering of plain scones probably from the same source. Washed down with rubbish tea bag teas. Decor of unpleasant plastic ivys perfectly suited the experience. Given the location and footfall, this place deserves a good kicking to maximise on the rich opportunity.

Beautifully situated with views across Elterwater. I stayed in a single room that was a good size and never felt cramped; I slept very well on the comfortable single bed. I stayed BB&EM which was extremely good value; I’d looked at the menu on line before booking and seen that the restaurant served Brasserie type dishes. This suits me down to the ground as I don’t like fancy food and I found something very easily on all three of the nights I stayed. The wine was good and very competitively priced and there was a nice bar to sit and have a drink in later with a good selection of beers wines and spirits. The staff were all lovely and friendly and couldn’t do enough for you, any questions or requests were dealt with immediately and always with a smile. Overall this is a very good hotel and i would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone and fully intend to use it again myself.

Terrible evening meal with many items off the menu, so very limited choice. Food was absolutely awful. We complained and were told by a rather rude waiter that they’d had problems with their food delivery that day, and ‘what do you like?!’ Said in a rude and arrogant way. My sea bass was over cooked and dry and the accompanying potato dish was just potatoes in their skins, crushed and stacked up - dry and tasteless. My sisters meals were dreadful too. The chef was obviously having a very bad day! Even without their usual food delivery, a good chef would be able to rustle up a tasty few dishes from kitchen basics and put them on a specials board. As a previous caterer myself, I could have done better myself, and do have enough knowledge of food prep and cooking meals to be able to say this.Breakfast, however, was lovely. Otherwise this would only be one star.

No es la selección que estamos buscando, pero el té estaba bien. Qué maravilloso hotel y restaurante. Acabo de celebrar un gran cumpleaños de amigos una tarde de cumpleaños. Reservamos la cena Bed and Breakfast.

We returned to Sawrey House on a DBB "Special" - largely after being impressed by their restaurant on a previous visit, last October. The setting is quite lovely, overlooking attractive gardens, with glimpses of a Lake and fells beyond. Especially spectacular at eventide. Whilst the chef had changed, the standard of fare was as good as ever. The judiciously varied Main Menu offers a fair selection in each course and is supplemented by daily Specials, so a fair choice is available. The Wine List too, was quite adequate - several specialty gins were available as well. Of particular merit were my Tempura Prawns, and succulent Belly Pork with accompanying "sophisticated" bubble & squeak. The locally sourced lamb is also well worth attention. Desserts were imaginative and delicious. The Lemon Posset was a taste sensation! As was a Berry Compote. Portions too, were more than generous, although perhaps just one more Tempura Prawn would have broadened my smile! Service was prompt, polite and efficient. All in all? Well, we'll be back.

Staff often forget that sites like Trip Advisor exist when dishing out horrendous customer service to guests and visitors. We chose to sit in the patio area overlooking the great views and so did others. There is no initiative from the staff when asking if people need another drink... in the day you have to walk to the restaurant to get served but during the night you have to walk completely around via the side entrance... even when its empty and I was greeted by an extremely rude waiter when I was asked to trek back on myself... he even (the same person) turned up at the bar after I walked completely around from one part of the building to another as he would not let me proceed about another five foot to the bar area..... with a smile on his face. Two senior members of staff had been eating in the restaurant area during the afternoon (not a staff room) so customers felt difficult asking for service. Really dreadful.

My sister and I ate here this week while waiting to go into Hill Top, the waiter was fairly rude because we requested to sit outside even though it was cold (we were happy to do so and allow the children to run around), there was no children's menu so when I went to order I asked for cheese on toast (£2.50 if ordered with soup but not available on its own) however another waiter advised that we could have a children's cheese on toast for £3.50 (surely this should be less as its a smaller portion?). It wasn't necessarily the price that was the issue but rather that we didn't have the children's menu to begin with. It's a shame as the food was really nice and the hotel itself looked like a lovely place to stay but the attitude of this particular member of staff left a lot to be desired. Would possibly visit again, lovely views, nice rooms and good location.

We visited the home of Beatrix Potter on 24th May and decided to have lunch at the hotel next door as it looked rather nice and the view to the rear is really good. The service was poor. The food was expensive and I had the worst meal that I have had for a long time. The waiter came round and asked if I had enjoyed the meal and I said that I hadn't and that I would like to speak to whoever was in charge. He just walked away without a word. No one came. The other point. If you wish to pay by credit card they make a 3% surcharge. They must be living in the dark ages. Most people now pay by card and I have not experienced being charged extra by any other restaurant. I mentioned this to a member of staff at the National a Trust who told me that they receive a lot of complaints. The staff all appear to be foreign with a slim understanding of spoken English. If you like good food, do not visit this establishment.

Hotel s krásným výhledem na krajinu a jezero. Krásná letní terasa. Milý a ochotný personál. Dobré anglické snídaně a večeře v místní restauraci.

We stopped off for afternoon tea after visiting Beatrix Potter's house. We waited for a while to be seated and, while the 3 staff members didn't appear busy, we weren't greeted or seated. Staff weren't very friendly towards us. The afternoon tea itself was ok but nothing impressive. The views from the restaurant are beautiful though.

Excellent menus and very professional & polite service. Meals arrived quickly. Restaurant small and cosy. Very intimate for couples while also suitable for larger groups.

We were visiting Hill Top, next door to the hotel, so we booked our time slot for the attraction then went next door to the Sawrey House Hotel for a bit of lunch. As we had a meal planned for that evening, we just wanted a light lunch. We asked if we could order a Ploughmans between us along with a pot of tea, this was no problem. I like it when establishments are accommodating like this. Everything was delicious, service was nice. We will be back.

We visited Hill Top farm then called in here for a cream tea. We didn't order cream tea, but had soup (tomato & basil), and the ploughman's. Both were okay. The cappuccino was like warm milk, no taste at all. The building, interior and exterior is lovely, but the service and food were just ok, nothing bad but nothing exceptional.

We stumbled upon this place while having a drive around the area at lunch time and we are glad we did.It was quiet, the views were breathtaking, the staff ever so friendly and the service exceptionally quick! There was some interesting history to the place too, a great find.

We sampled breakfasts and evening meals at this hotel and restaurants. The food choices are excellent. The restaurant allows time in between courses for the evening meal which makes the meal more intimate and enjoyable. Evening dinner offers a limited but high quality range of starters - our favourite being the scallops. The main courses are also of a high standard but the best in our view was the lamb rump and the pan fried sea bass. We were spoiled for choice with desserts with white chocolate cheesecake, creme brûlée with salted caramel and chocolate torte with peanut butter ice cream ... mouth watering!!!! We also enjoyed the well cooked breakfasts offering a range of cooked options that provided the right start to a walkers day.

Good mains, poor starter and poor desert. Would literally only recommend this for dinner if you're staying there otherwise get in your car and go and eat some place else.

5 of us visited for afternoon tea - 2 x travelzoo vouchers and one paid full price.Positives - the views are lovely, the decor nice (recently renovated I think) and the scones were excellent, warm and fresh. But unfortunately the negatives outweighed this for us. The service was poor - nobody checked back with us at all after bringing our food out. We had to go and find somebody when we wanted a refill of tea (which we were charged extra for). We were also charged extra for a glass of coke as one of our party doesn't like tea or coffee. So we had 4 single teas included for 5 of us, and the 5th person didn't receive a drink included which we felt was unfair. I felt the sandwiches were poor, particularly for me who ordered a vegetarian version. 4 very small finger sandwiches each, 2 of which were filled with a single piece cucumber or red pepper (with no additional fillings). There were also no biscuits or panna cotta given, as stated on the website. The total cost was £64 for 5 people, and even at this price we would not return.

Total apathy displayed by member of staff - we were left after afternoon tea was placed on our table. We were the only people in the restaurant. After we had finished our afternoon tea we could not find anyone and left without seeing anyone - a door to an office was open and a gentleman was sat inside - we stated thank you and bye and were completely ignored.

If you are in the area you must visit this restaurant. The food is really very very good and a good choice on the menu. The staff are attentive without being overbearing. A must try.

I booked this as a gift for 2 members of my family and a few of us went with them. We were all extremely disappointed. The room we were out in was completely lacking in atmosphere and dated. White walls and white tablecloths and completely souless with no view. The food was very boring and the cakes were all a bit samey. The service was unfriendly and we were ignored most of the time. It was all very subdued and awkward. It's in an out of the way location which I realise can be the case in the lakes but this place certainly wasn't worth the effort it took to get there. Even it pops up on travelzoo I would seriously not bother.

My husband and I had afternoon tea here on a travelzoo deal and felt very disappointed with it. Yes it was on a deal and had we paid full price I would have wanted my money back and left it. The sandwich selection was poor I believe houmous is a dip not a sandwich filler also they were not freshly made. The whole thing had been prepared and stored in a fridge/cold place apart from the scone which had been warmed and then put on to the ice cold display frame hence went cold before eaten. The small cakes weren't anything special. There was only one person covering the whole hotel from reception to bar to dining room. We had to go and ask for our coffee to be brought out. The whole experience was very disappointing we really wouldn't recommend it.

Visited for afternoon tea on a beautiful autumn day. The hotel lovely with pleasant views, the lady that served us was very nice but the afternoon tea could only be described as mediocre. The sandwiches were plain and the "cakes" were thoroughly disappointing.

This was the perfect place to reflect on our visit to Hilltop while enjoying the stunning views that inspired Beatrix Potter. It was warm and cosy but has a lovely outdoor seating area for when it isn't raining! The service was unrushed rather than slow and the waiter was very helpful. The coffee was excellent as was the hot chocolate as were the scones, with jam and cream. The decor is simple and unfussy, enabling you to concentrate on the beautiful outdoors.

For my review of the restaurant see my review of the hotel! Sorry about that! I recommend this place with excellent service. There's clearly a chef in the background, do not be put off by the cafe type menus. Only the wine/drinks list needs a bit of sophistication and the restaurant would be really really good

Very friendly staff. Restaurant has good views into small valley. Scones, jam an cream excellent. Have it with Hot Chocolate. When we were there we were given advise that DB&B is £50 each during the winter months - bargain!

A lovely well maintained hotel with views across the fells. A warm welcome even though there are few directions of where to go once in the hotel. Comfortable seating and good range of hot drinks. Service was slow as there only seemed to be one young member of staff doing everything. We had 2 hot chocolates with cream. The till had one price and the menu had another. Menu price was cheaper and was honoured without fuss.

After staying last year and having outstanding food and a lovely stay we returned this year for a short break to find that the quality of food had dropped dramatically , our first nights 3 course meal was disappointing as there was next to no meat on our braised short rib just a lot of fat and there was barely enough food for 2 courses . Breakfast the next morning was much improved on the night before . Second nights dinner just got worse as we ordered all 3 courses at 6 o'clock the first course come out in good time and was fine then we waited 35 minutes for the main course to arrive to be served a raw poussin which unfortunately a small amount was consumed before realising it was only the outer edge that was cooked and the rest was raw . It has been so disappointing to have had this experience with the food at Sawrey house as the food was the main reason we returned this year again as it was outstanding last year .

I came in today with three friends who are over from Canada. We all had leek and potato soup and a sandwich. The soup was, awful it tasted of vinegar! We asked for it to be changed, so we had tomato and basil, which tasted like vinegar again! One of my friends managed to eat hers! I was not offered a refund! Do chefs/cooks not taste the food anymore before sending it out to customers? Would not recommend.

Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! Just had one of the worst dining experiences of my life, for a 30th birthday celebration courtesy of Lucy’s on a plate Ambleside! I honestly don’t know where to begin with this, maybe the appalling manager, slow service, bland overpriced food, not sure really but here we go. So we email this place the previous evening to our booking enquiring about a reservation for 2 people, we heard nothing until WE contacted them around 3/4pm the following day to be told “oh yes im just on with the bookings now and was just about to call you”which I didn’t believe but that’s fine, on the phone I explained it was a special 30th birthday meal for my partner as they asked were we celebrating an occasion. We were looking forward to our meal and arrived slightly early about 6.20 for a 7pm table, we thought we could maybe have a drink if they had a bar or somewhere to wait for the table. We were shocked to see the manager fumbling around with his booking sheet to clearly see he didn’t have our names down, just to write us in in front of him, he then makes a joke saying “that would of been embarrassing”yeah it certainly would have been embarrassing so not a great start at all, we sit down to read the menu and notice some essay on the front talking about the guests and what they were celebrating, no mention of my partners 30th birthday just a half arsed after thought saying hello Andrew and Rhianne, as we were clearly forgotten about. After looking at the menu we decided to go for 2 pork belly starters £12 each and lamb shank £28 and lamb tagine £24, starters came out pretty quickly around 10-15 mins so great, unfortunately BLAND!! The apple puree could of been anything as there was no flavour at all, no sweetness to balance the dish just the flavour or pork and a little black pudding Bon Bon, BLAND! Then we wait for almost 1 hour, yes 1 hour for the main, asking the waiting staff how long, got told if it’s not here in 5 mins I’ll go and punch the chef, yes haha very funny but just get me my food I wasn’t up for jokes by this time, then the mains come, my lamb shank was dry had next to no sauce or should I say gravy at all, the mash was lukewarm the veg the same and very undercooked, I’m all for al dente but this just wasn’t and a piece of parsnip no bigger then your little finger, this place is a long way off fine dining! I asked for some more sauce and was brought a gravy boat of wishy washy gravy that they must use on every dish! Honestly very similar to a bisto gravy, where’s the lamb flavour or the reduced stock to coat the lamb shank, absolutely nothing! My partner said the lamb tagine was lukewarm again but after waiting an hour we were so hungry we just ate it, she said the cous cous was just bland and had nothing special about it, she said the cous cous from Sainsbury’s ‘food on the go’ was much nicer, why is this when we’re paying all this money? We also noticed there was no check back to see how we were enjoying the food as tbh they just weren’t bothered! When our plates were cleared(25 mins after we had finished) we were asked was everything ok, I said hmm yeah ok to which the waitress replied “ok yeah” great and takes the plates. This is where I would of informed the manager that someone was not very happy and suggest they go and speak to them! I was very reluctant to say anything because I’m aware I’m celebrating my partners 30th and didn’t want to make a scene, after such terrible service and food we just couldn’t order a dessert as we weren’t going to give these people my more of our money, we receive the bill at £115 for 2 starters 2 mains and 2 drinks each one of those was non alcoholic. Very overpriced for the quality you receive. Then to top the night off I go to pay, this is where the manger really shows his lack of experience, from me counting out the money to pay he never once asked “how was your meal” how did your partner enjoy her 30th birthday celebration” nothing! Didn’t even say enjoy your evening, honestly I recommend you research this place before going here as it’s beyond bad!
