We were meeting some friends in the area and they suggested we meet here for dinner. Having looked at the website which says that food is served all day we thought it would be the perfect place after a day of exploring the area. We tried to book a table online but the online booking doesn’t work. We arrived at 8:20pm to be told that the restaurant and bar is “reservations only” for any food and that last orders were at 8:15pm so we could not eat. The restaurant was empty though so we asked if the empty tables were all reserved and the answer was no. When we asked if they could be flexible as we had a young child with us we were told no and that “all their marketing” said that you could not walk in and eat. There is nothing on the website to suggest this - it says that food is served all day and it is the ideal location after a long day of wasting. We were obviously surprised and disappointed but the man who told us this was then unbelievably rude and then refused to even serve us for a drink after we questioned this policy. Such a shame as the location and views are lovely. If it’s reservations only then the website should say this so that people don’t make the trip here to be turned away.

Given the high quality reviews of dinner at the Lancrigg and fatigue after the days’ activities, we ate dinner for 2 of the 3 nights we stayed at the hotel. Over those 2 visits, we tried the lamb burger, the steak, risotto and the chicken/cheese salad, as well as a variety of starters and desserts. Everything was really tasty, nicely seasoned, and the meat in all cases cooked perfectly. The only negative comment was that (except for the generous ice cream and sorbet plates) the portions were a little small for the price. Obviously, this is driven in part by the reputation of the kitchen and the location. However, I was charged nearly £3 for a blackcurrant and soda which really is excessive! We found better value in Grasmere for our other meals. To end on the most positive note…. We had Becky as our server for both nights. Her professionalism, knowledge of the menu and unfailing friendliness were flawless. We plan to return to the hotel and will probably want to eat dinner again in the restaurant, although I will drink tap water.

Lovely setting, beautiful grounds. Inside it's charming, relaxed modern country feel to it. Went for dinner, very friendly and welcoming, they didn't have a wine on the list, so very kindly offered us a better one at that price, food is where they're juggling - the menu can't decide if it's easy, casual eating or more serious. Lamb burger was dry, but the chips were excellent, friend's soup was complex and aiming a lot higher. Definitely go, worth a visit.

¿Dónde has estado?

Nice surroundings, attractive menu but there was a lack of attention to detail about the food and service that we had for lunch. It seemed to promise more but the warm sandwiches were tepid, the vegetable crisps tasted a little old and they'd run out of the fennelslaw that was supposed to be served as a side with all sandwiches. I live nearby in Ambleside and I visited Lancrigg many years ago when we were both vegetarian and enjoyed it. Now neither of us are vegetarian and wow, this place really has gone from good to great! My partner and I had an amazing meal there tonight - he had the chorizo burger and said it was one of the best burgers he has ever had. To put this in context he is a serious foodie, loves a good burger and is half Spanish so he really does know a good chorizo burger. I had the venison and cranberry sausages and they were seriously delicious. We were both taken with the salad accompaniments which were imaginative and tasty. Despite our choices, faithful vegetarians should not be put off. There were still two excellent sounding vegetarian meals and one vegan meal on the menu. Our peri peri prawn starter was also lovely and our blueberry roly poly dessert was divine - surprisingly light and delicate. The service was incredibly warm, friendly and efficient. The restaurant area and lounge were a perfect mix of traditional features and modern furnishings - I found myself wanting to move in! I really could not fault this experience. Lancrigg is a little off the beaten track but honestly, make the effort. You will be rewarded and we will definitely be back!

This place is in a beautiful setting and we came across it at the end of a long walk on a hot sunny day so I was delighted to order a pint of beer. I was then given a lecture by the barman/owner? that "we are a country hotel, not a pub and we do not want men standing round the bar with pints in their hands. I serve schooners which are less than a pint!" The schooner turned out to be an ugly green glass that looked as though it was from Poundland and although not a pint it did not stop him charging nearly £5 for it! I would rather go without rather than be patronised by some pompous snob.

Walked the Easedale Road to the beck, wasn't up for the Tarn walk too hot today with the dogs and an elderly Uncle, we decided to try out the food at The Lancrigg. I had read the reviews before and knew it was a bit hit and miss but they cater well for veggies......The view from the front of the hotel is wonderful. We grabbed the last free table outside. Only two people working hence a queue for the bar and one waiting on tables. By the time we got to order there had been a power cut apparently in Grasmere sub station. To cut a long story short we remained calm, thought we would be returning to Grasmere still hungrey, so we sipped our drinks and took in the wonderful setting. Finally the waiter said we could have something simple like a pannini with chips, this we did and the food was fresh and enjoyable, staff very pleasant but Fawlty Towers service. Saying all this we would return just to soak up the setting simply sublime.

This rather pretentious restaurant has plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, but, frankly, the cuisine is bland and the portions meagre. Before a course is even brought to the table, you are primed with the conceit that chef Gary McDermott has perfectly blended all flavours that form the tasting menu. This is designed to both fuel your expectations and neutralize any judgement the customer might wish to make. Unfortunately the message of intimidation was not well received by one of our party who pointed out that the dish she was served bore no resemblance to the soufflé promised by the menu; furthermore, it hadn’t tasted good. Pearls were clutched, and Chef was consulted on the matter after which the customer was informed that she was wrong and that modern menus can be confusing. The rather ugly scene that ensued was exacerbated by the supercilious attitude of the waiter who seemed unable, and indeed unwilling, to defuse the situation. We were informed that since this dish had not been enjoyed, it was pointless to direct further delicacies to such an unrefined palate. This stance was maintained despite our assurances that other members of the party had enjoyed the food. In response to our rather stunned expressions, this was translated for us in more direct terms – we were getting no dessert, and it was clear they wanted us to leave. I have never been subject to such haughty and disdainful treatment which postured as customer service. The idyllic surroundings of the restaurant, nestling under Easdale Tarn, do not appear to be matched by tranquillity within its walls.

I have just returned from a trip to Grasmere and Rydal and visited Lancrigg for the first time since it stopped being a wholly vegetarian hotel. I wanted to write here as soon as possible to say that not only is the food as good as ever (for a vegan) but the personal care I received from the staff was quite outstanding and very refreshing. As there were very few vegan option on the menu and I explained that I'd be eating there each evening, the chefs very kindly went out of their way to prepare for me a specially-designed vegan delight each evening. Each dish was a work of art - a truly beautlful creation - and was clearly made with so much love and care. I was very touched that so much effort was made to feed one hungry vegan! The staff were all exceptionally kind and friendly and the first evening I was there (which was Bank Holiday Monday) one of the waiters even drove me back to where I was staying a few miles away as I couldn't get a taxi or bus!! To go beyond the call of duty like that (and after me they also drove other guests home) is rare and beautiful and deserves the highest praise. Lancrigg remains one of the most beautiful spots on earth and you don't need to stay there to enjoy its magnificent grounds or eat in its lovely eateries. If you haven't already been - go!

This was our second stay in Grasmere this year. We didn't stay at the Lancrigg Hotel but wanted to try the vegetarian restaurant which is open to non-residents. On our first visit earlier this year, we just turned up and were disappointed not to get a table due to a private function. The moral of the story is to always call ahead to reserve a table. This time we made a reservation for 7pm. When we arrived we were shown to the dining room by a courteous young waiter. The dozen or so tables each had a single candle glowing in the fading dusk light. The large full length windows revealed an awesome view of the mountains. We were the first guests to arrive and we eagerly opted for a table close to the Windows. The waiter took our orders. Even before any food arrived, my wife predicted this was going to be a memorable experience. We shared our appetisers of roast nuts and olives and bread. For main meal we both had the spicy Moroccan root vegetables which was delicious. For dessert, I had the Chocolate Sundae and my wife had chocolate mousse with coconut ice cream. We both follow a plant based diet so chose the vegan options where the menu gave a choice between the regular vegetarian item and the vegan variant. In summary, the location is stunning, the ambiance is relaxed, the staff make you feel welcome and the food was excellent.

This review is just of the restaurant since it is open to the public. I'm reviewing the hotel separately.

A beautiful location on the pathways up to Easedale Tarn. It is a sign of how friendly this place is in that they invite you to wander through the gardens on your way up or down and in the lobby is chilled and flavoured water to enjoy. We found it on the way back down and oh my as vegans we found ourselves beside with joy at yummy cake, savoury and main course options all of which we could eat. We lingered as long as we could on the grass terrace enjoying superb food and drinks. We did not really want to l eave and changed our plans so we could return as soon as possible for a proper meal. A vegan cream tea was enjoyed for the first time ever outside of home and the hot fudge brownie is top of the list next time. Absolutely my favourite place to eat in the Lakes.

Great chippy. Fish and chips are top class. Very popular place and you can see why. Option to dine in if you want. Caters for gluten free too. Highly recommend

First few times I've tried here it's been nice but the last few times I've had carbonara pasta it has been so bland, the man behind the counter had dirty hands as well not good for health & hygiene 🤢🤢 It just put me right off

First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.
