Stopped off for a quick dinner. 2 adults, 3 young children and a baby. Food was quite nice but very expensive. Close to £19 for a bacon cheeseburger and chips. Also 12.5 percent service charge added on top of the already expensive prices. Unlikely to return.

A lovely pub with charming rooms, friendly staff and tasty food and in a very welcoming environment. A family of four for one night , we stayed in the suite on the top floor which had a spacious double room with a very comfortable bed and a second room with twin beds. The bathroom is off the main bedroom so the kids had to walk through our room to access the bathroom but it wasn’t an issue for us. The staff were very attentive, and there was a good selection of food and drinks. The breakfast was also lovely and hearty setting us up for a great day of walking. The pub is on the main road with not much within walking distance but it’s a great opportunity overnight spot for walking in the local area.

Very disappointed with our stay here expected 5 star for the cost of accommodation when I compare it with other priced places to stay but unfortunately although we had a large room and bathroom, the furniture was shabby and sound proofing non existant! Every time the person upstairs walked across their room it felt like they were in beside us! Also we had to listen to pounding beat of music from bar below till it want off! I think it would be fine as a stop over for food if food could be served hot and not luke warm as ours was ... but not to sleep over. Recommend thick carpets throughout bedrooms and no wood floors !

Disaster. Had to chase drinks, starters came and they were poor, then the fun began…….took an age for the starters to be taken away and in the meantime tables who had came in behind us had finished their mains. Someone finally came over and said the person who had cleared away the starters had not told the kitchen to ‘away’ the mains. When they did finally arrive, two out of the three meals were stone cold. So one of the party gobbled down their food and two of us had crisps at home. Great way to waste nearly two hours of your day.

Nice and cosy pub/inn with great food and service. We eat a delicious classic pie, presented with a modern twist, but there is more to the menu than just classic English dishes. As a starter we eg had humus with flatbread and a delicious smoked salmon on a roasted rösti. The inn is located in a former farm, very nicely renovated. I would recommend to visit the Plough if you get the chance.

Staying local and recommended to us. Stopped in for dinner and drinks as a short walk away. Food was excellent and quickly served, good local beers, and afterwards joined in the local quiz night, which was hosted by the manager, and very good-hearted, even for non-locals like ourselves. Thoroughly recommended if in the area or passing by on the A65.

Called In for dinner on way home from Lake district. Was shown a table in the bar area. Friendly staff, lovely food. Our experience was spoilt when a family arrived with two very large dogs , and sat in the same dining area a couple of tables away from us. No control over the dogs, a bowl of water was spilt over the floor and the owner threw a handful of dog biscuits under the table for the dogs to eat. The dogs were not kept under control and were slobbering about all over. One young waitress stopped to stroke and fuss over the dogs ( I only hope she washed her hands before serving food!) I suggested a separate area for dogs, and we were told we could have sat in a separate area although we were not shown this area when we arrived. We left without ordering desserts or coffee as it was quite an unpleasant dining experience.

My steak came quite rare instead of medium rare didn't want to mess around waiting to get it cooked more so just ate it, perrercorn sauce was odd it was like gravy with peppercorns in it! Dinner was expensive and topped of with a service charge left a bitter taste!! On a better note the breakfast was excellent!!! We stopped at the Plough having last visited it over 5 years ago and it was great to be back. The setting is a traditional but high class pub and restaurant serving local foods and beers. I had the cheese starter which wasn’t what I was expecting however tasted absolutely delicious, Followed by the bangers and mash and carrot cake. The sausages in the bangers and mash were of a very high quality and the gravy and mash was to die for! Staff were fun but also wanted to make sure we had a great meal which we did. My girlfriend had fish and chips which she said was one of the best she has ever tasted too. If you are driving on the M6 or on your way to Leeds or Ilkley, This is a great pub to stop off at. I’ll certainly be back and may even look at booking a room next time.

We were given a table in the bar rather than the restaurant for some unexplained reason and it had bench seats which were rather uncomfortable. Two of us chose the evening's special of fish and chips but there was more batter than fish and all the other meals failed to please for various reasons. The wine list was fairly basic, mainly new world and over-priced so we didn't have any. Service was slow yet it wasn't that busy. Visited the Plough 3/3/2024 for Sunday lunch. The Plough always has the appearance welcoming and homely when entering. Sadly on this day , the pleasantries ended there. The beef we ordered was difficult to cut because it was rubbery and had a 2 to 3 cms strip of white fat around the outer edge. We did complain to the waiter, he did apologise and promised to pass on my views on to the kitchen. I think this complaint must have then unnerved the waiter because he then accidentally knocked a nearly full 250 ml glass of red wine over my wife. He did apologise and attempted to minimise the potential damage by washing my wife’s fleece . To conclude they did offer to pay for all cleaning replacement costs and waived our bill. Yes this was a unfortunate accident, but I still think it was clumsy and shouldn’t have happened, so will not be returning there anytime soon

Me my partner and our daughter was looking forward to coming here all day today. This has always been mine and my partners favourite place to eat for the past 10 years. We live near liverpool, so it is a drive out to the plough. We had been out on a day trip to the lake district, so we decided to call to book a table at the plough (as in the past its always been really busy) I phoned and spoke to a young lady asking if we could book for 5 she never even asked for my name which I asked her if she wanted it ? She then said see you at 5:30 which I stated twice it was 5. We walked in and was stood there for 5 mins with people walking past several times looking but not actually acknowledging us. so I called at the bar and the gentleman said someone would be with us shortly! Still another 5 mins then to find no booking was actually made, then no childrens menus printed off and then given a menu with 2 for £25 or 3 for £30 even though there is other/better menu options on their website! Waited for over 10 mins for anyone to even take our drinks order and then I decided to shout over that we've just going to have drinks and go as we was so disappointed with the hospitality/service and as my 6 year old said: "mummy are we not eating because its a disaster" Looking at the food that was coming out whist waiting to be served didn't warrant the price tag, so glad we took the choice to leave! It's absolutely gutting that this was always a place that we'd always look forward to coming as a treat but it will definitely be a place that we'll never be back to in the future !

We visited as a treat for my mother in law. The food was excellent, although I realised part way through my steak & ale pie that I had the wrong pie (my mother in law had ordered the same & hers was totally different). The pie was absolutely delicious, so I didn’t mention it at the time as I was happy with it. There was only one pie on the menu, so I have no idea what it was! All the food was great, couldn’t fault it. The issue was the service. We waited at least 20 minutes just to order a drink (it wasn’t busy). We weren’t offered any sauces with the meals, and had to go in search of vinegar for the fish and chips. I noticed my daughter’s fish was quite small, and thought that was just shrinkflation in action. When we saw the bill, it was clear we’d been given the smaller portion (there were two prices on the menu), which explains the size but why not ask which we preferred? We’d have chosen the “full” portion. Once we’d finished our mains we waited for a very long time for the plates to be cleared, various waiting staff walked past our table empty handed, ignoring the plates that we had neatly stacked. By the time someone did clear them, we’d decided not to bother with desserts (or rather to pick something up on the way home). A shame that the kitchen is let down by front of house, which meant we didn’t buy another round of drinks & desserts and are unlikely to return.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed here for one night. When we lived in the area several years ago this place had a lovely restaurant and we used to go there quite a lot. It had a reputation for high quality locally sourced food and had a lovely atmosphere. It was friendly and welcoming. Under new management it has sadly gone downhill faster than a rocket fuelled Easter egg. First, the accommodation - they only had a family suite left and we were two. We asked for a discount and they said no, we had to pay the full price. When we arrived one of the suite rooms was locked up and we had no key, so we couldn't use it. So we paid for a suite and got a room! This room aptly had a 'family' of flies in it - some dead on the window sills, some still buzzing around. Nice. Next the food - pretty average and underwhelming. I ordered turkey thinking I might get slices of the actual bird (previously this place ordered poultry from Goosnargh) - this was pulled then squashed together in a bubble and squeak type arrangement amd fried till it was black. My husband had a similar experience with pheasant. Just yuk. Cost cutting shouldn't be this visible to the customer - you would expect this sort of thing in a fast food place not an expensive restaurant. In terms of service, the local sixth form wait staff were pleasant but the full time 'managers' were brusque and gave off a couldn't care less attitude at almost every turn. They wouild ask a question then walk off while you were answering. Very odd. They also played loud pop music in the dining room. In a country inn - why? They refused to put the restaurant food on the room bill. Again, why? When the manager who took payment asked how our food was and we were less than effusive, he said he would pass this on in such a disinterested way we knew he wasn't going to do it. Breakfast. "We serve a continerntal breakfast but only serve hot things from 8.30." Again, an odd arrangement, for a hotel. The continental offer included sliced white processed bread you had to toast yourself, like in a hostel, and there were no pastries or other bakery items of any sort. There was no fruit or yogurt. There were no cheeses or meats. There was nothing else besides the bread, except bought in bottles of orange juice and small packets of Kellogg cereals and a jar of jaw breaking granola. I had to leave it as I was genuinely worried I would lose a tooth. Then came the coffee - one cup each; they were susprised when my husband asked for a second one. The cooked breakfast consisted of nearly liquid poached eggs on store bought muffins - yum. And all this in the gentle ambience of flashing Christmas lights and ear bursting country and western which the manager was singing along to in favour of taking any notice of his guests. We had paid in advance so couldn't ask for a discount and knew by the general attitude that pointing out any improvements they might make would fall on deaf ears, but from a health and safety point of view, we did let them know about the flies. "Oh, I'll need to do somthing about that." was the response. No apology; no acceptance of responsibility, and nothing in the attitude to suggest he cared one bit. I would have given this place one star but it is an a very handy location if you're travelling from north to south or vice versa. The previous mangement revamped it about 10 years ago and it's still a nicely decorated place. We also paid over the odds at £175 for a 'suite' whilst most will have paid £120 which is closer to what it's actually worth. If you go with the expectation of a hostel experience in a nice buidling and expect no frills, you won't be disappointed. Shame, as it could be so much more.

Upon entry we were told by a member of staff that there was no room due to staff being off sick, which is fine, It happens and you go somewhere else, not an issue. However when informing customers its best not to be condescending, snooty and look down your nose at them. For what?, having the audacity to fancy some lunch?. And to whatever pithy response the management dole out via this review, save it. We will not be back thanks, we are clearly not the type of people your staff want.

We were a party of 6 out for our Christmas get together. Having eaten at the Plough many times previously, we were all extremely disappointed by the poor quality of the food and slow disinterested service we received on our latest visit. The Christmas turkey dinner was leg not breast, the steak and ale pie was mostly carrot in gravy, and at £20 for each, were considerably overpriced. Plates were left uncleared on the table for almost 40 minutes, and when finally cleared, we weren't evenasked if everything was okay with the food. At almost £210 for 6 main courses and 6 drinks, it is not an experience we will be repeating.

Amazing food shame the service was shocking clueless and slow. The place was beautifully set up and laid out and would like to go again for the food but will probably not due to the poor customer service

Having been in the industry for years and usually refraining from reviews, I find it necessary to provide honest feedback. While the exterior seemed inviting, the experience took a downturn after a warm welcome from a gentleman. The restaurant lady's rudeness and lack of hospitality, despite ample space, were disappointing. My request for a kids roast at 6 pm on a quiet Sunday, admittedly cheeky, was met with a flat-out refusal, missing an opportunity to avoid food waste. Opting for an adult Sunday roast at £18, my wife received a portion barely distinguishable from a child's, and it arrived cold. My child's freshly microwaved meatball pasta was fine, except for the mouth burn during tasting. Disheartened by the subpar roast, my wife tried the £25 sticky toffee pudding for two courses (£7 for the dessert), only to receive a thin, cold slice with ice cream being the highlight. During bill settlement, our host, seemingly aware of the poor experience, didn't inquire about the food quality. In summary, this review serves as a cautionary note about the establishment's overpricing, poor service, and cold dishes. Given our experience, it wouldn't be surprising if the place faces closure. It's disheartening, considering our initial hopes for a more satisfying experience. I hope this honest review is taken constructively for potential improvements.

Met family here on the way back south, the restaurant is well located, near to the M6. We had a meal for 6, the place is has a really nice country pub feel, even though it was busy all of the tables were well spaced out so it didn't feel crowded at all. We had two dogs with us and had a nice table in the corner with absolutely no issues. The menu was great, a lot of the party had a good hearty Sunday roast, I had the pasta which was ok, but the staff were great and overall a nice meal.

Came across this pub/restaurant as we were passing through the area. We have been visiting the Lake District for several days and this was the best meal we have had since visiting. It was so homely and the service was brilliant. Sophia was our waitress and she was so accommodating and helpful. I ordered a glass of wine which I did not quite like (my fault) and she really went out of her way to help find me something that suited my taste buds. She was so helpful and polite and I would highly recommend a visit to this pub… and to top it off.. they do cherry Bakewell tart which hardly any restaurants do for dessert!

Room booked for trip back up to Aberdeenshire. Lovely suite, aspiring French style. Huge bathroom. Dining super. Great food big portions. Big car park. Clean and welcoming. One of the nicest little places have stayed, breakfast just superb quality and quantity. Drinks service was slow but kept prompting young lady sure could have been more on ball on this only.

Absolutely beautiful plates and lovely flavours for our 2 daily specials. Service was reasonably quick (18:45 table and place only a third full) and was friendly. My wife was very pleased with her Feather Blade of beef, bone marrow crumble, parsnips, potato, celeriac puree and kale. Quantity was acceptable, though far from generous at £28. My choice of Stonebass was a very meaty fish - and, I gather from later research, a rare one to see - probably justifying the £29. The sauce was lukewarm but tasty. 7 balls of saffron potato were served hard (the server said that was how they are supposed to be) and 5 small mussels, deep fried in breadcrumbs, were a nice texture change. I would have liked a lot more of something on my plate, however. We chose the expensive specials as the regular menu was not at all remarkable in its description. When we saw their fish & chips at the next table (£17), we were glad we'd gone for the specials...to let them show off a bit. I thought nouvelle cuisine, with its sample portions, was old hat.....

We had the most perfect overnight stopover at this little gem! Perfect location just off the M6 as we travelled from Forfar to Derbyshire. We arrived to the warmest welcome by everyone we encountered & our fur boy Benson (lab) was treated like he was a regular! Definitely a dog loving place to stop by for food drink or stay! The room was so inviting, classic luxury with huge bathroom with roll top bath. Bathrobes & beautifully presented local toiletries. A Lilly Coffee machine & great selection of tea added to further comforts. They'd thought of everything. We will definitely return on our next visit south to see family. Thank you 😊 we left fulfilled after delicious evening meal & breakfast.

I managed to get a last minute booking for myself, my wife and Two children. The food was appalling. Scallop was totally baked in salt which to be fair was replaced but such a delicate ingredient was overpowered by whatever was all over it. Burgers very average in brioche buns and bought it beef and ale pie in tall soggy pastry. As a local country pub I was expecting much more than this especially for the price. Would have got better at Wetherspoons. Should have gone to McDonald’s at a service station on the way home. Romneys couldn’t accommodate us at short notice as they were fully booked. Maybe it was Chefs night off but whoever the chef was clearly had no skill. Maybe they had a table at such short notice because locals have noticed a drop in standards. Poor quality food at top dollar. No problem with the Bar other than it was a horrible chunk of black and bar staff dressed in black made everything feel dark and gloomy and intimidating. Is this what it’s like all the time or just a Halloween theme? But thank you for accommodating my hungry family and please use this review as constructive criticism and areas to improve

Hotel very comfortable but no sockets in bathroom for charging your toothbrush. They kindly gave us an adapter to use while we were there. Nowhere to walk our dog nearby. Had to drive to Grange over Sands.

We had booked 5 rooms through Booking.com well in advance and when we arrived at 4pm we were told that our booking had been cancelled (Booking.com had taken our money the previous day). This eventually got sorted by Booking .com and we found good alternative accommodation for the night but the way we were treated by staff at the Derby Arms was awful.

First of all, a couple of points to bear in mind for anyone reading this. Although out of control of the P&W, the only parking on street is at a premium and very limited. This was our first visit here and the restaurant itself is quite small and intimate (absolutely nothing wrong with that) and therefore booking a table is a must during a 7/7:30 pm sitting as all tables were occupied. Not certain if the dining room is due to be decorated, but it really could benefit from a lick of paint to update the drab walls which were all totally bereft of any pictures and the only decoration was a tatty plant in a bottle. As a suggestion, perhaps tea lights could add to a current lack of ambiance? The two lads (brothers?) running the dining room were nothing short of polite and attentive (no complaints there), took our orders and did ask if we wanted more drinks regularly. What was a nice touch were the glasses of water with ice and lemon served to us as we were seated. I don't mind paying a premium price if the food is good, but the sharing bread and olives was a tad expensive for just that was, and the rest of the menu was on the steep side too for what was nothing special (sorry P&W) but very nice. We ordered our main meal, but it transpired that the table next to us got it and was eventually taken away from them and an apology given to them and us, which we did accept with no complaint but really shouldn't happen in a small restaurant. We were going to order a sweet, but after seeing the small portion our other 'neighbours' were served (again for the cost), we decided against it. What we should have done was to look on line at the menu and cost - totally the fault was ours but in our defence M'Lord, we had extremely poor internet service! It's often said you don't get a second chance at first impression, which can be somewhat disputed. That said, taking everything into account, I don't think we'd make a return visit but do wish them all the best for the future.
