Sat 9 Nov 8.45 table booked in advance when arrived look of surprise on face of staff given a table not laid very haphazard attention by staff plates were plastic server's little choice of bottle beer no draught although on menu. Food spring roll starter hot but very bland several of the items ordered were returned to kitchen undercooked or cold. Beside one other table of 3 no one their eating and even the on line home delivery boys were having a quite night. Did not check any reviews pre booking as in the past this was one of the best in town. Took a group of old mates out for a more. Think I was being generous giving a 1 star rating.

With hindsight there was a reason this restaurant was almost empty when we tried it. That is because it is dire. We eat out a lot. We visit Bristol a lot as our daughter is at Uni there. We took her out to dinner to Wongs. Total mistake. It is dire. Without doubt the worst place we have ever eaten at. It is very dirty. The tables and menus are sticky. The floor is disgusting. The glasses and crockery cloudy. The loos are the worst and most dirty we have ever seen. They make the long drop loos on Mount Kilimanjaro hike look good. The place urgently needs a deep clean. I'm glad I could not see the kitchen because it had to be as bad. We really like good Chinese food. But the food here is dire. It is totally rubbish. The chef simply cannot cook. The ingredients used are stale and out of take.. The food is oily, tasteless and simply inedible. None of use ate, it was returned. The really strange thing is the staff did not question us or ask what was wrong. They simply accepted they are running a sick, sad joke of a restaurant. That should not be a surprise. The customer service we endured was shocking. No welcome, no care, no interest and zero service. I simply cannot fathom how some people can rate this place five stars. Really. If genuine, they need to get out, eat out more and quickly realise what a good Chinese restaurant looks like. Because it sure isn't Wongs. In one word "avoid"

Home delivery. Food very expensive so expected great things. However it was the worst Chinese food we’ve ever had (and I’m 60!) My chicken fried rice was actually boiled rice and insipid chicken. Partners pork dish was swimming in watery oil. Even the prawn crackers were tasteless. So bad couldn’t eat. Deliveroo said go back to restaurant, restaurant phone permanently engaged. So no recourse hence only option was to write this review and hope no one else gets scammed.

The worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. I ordered chicken satay but got dry chicken on a stick with no satay sauce. The prawn toast was soggy and not cooked properly, curry sauce was like water and had no flavour and the the ribs were not seasoned properly. An absolute rip off for £40 I’d be embarrassed if I’d served that rubbish up!

Unfortunately this restaurant has gone seriously downhill since we were last there. Hardly anyone else there and gone was the lovely atmosphere. We had starters but then left as they were not as expected. My chicken satay was just fried chicken strips with a sweet chilli dip. When we complained to the waiter he said sorry but they had run out of satay sauce!! My husband's spare ribs were tasteless so we decided to not order anything else.

This place used to be quite a lovely place and the dishes were also great a year ago. I believe what may have happened is that the mangement had a staff shuffle, particularly their kitchen staff. This was obvious as the food served to us was just not it. Truth be told, I've decided not to come back again until I see the reviews indicate a positive notion. Criticisms: From the pork, chicken, and duck that was served, it was just not well cooked and rubbery which does feel like it was taken out of the freezer and microwaved before cooked? I don't know how you can mess up the rice but it was too hard which ideally you'd assume there was enough water was added. You can't mess up the tea so that was fine but the soup was questionable at best as their tofu feels so rubbery as well. I was able to return half of our dishes due to the poor quality and left half way as the others could not bare to finish. Positives: I do feel sorry for the waiters, they were getting criticised by the kitchen staff (as there was also issues where our orders of food was either wrong or delayed up to 20 minutes). They were overall very kind, helpful, and did their best considering the situation so we tipped them specifically. This is one of the longest reviews I've left, but in all honesty for anyone looking to get authentic chinese dishes the restaurant cannot offer the experience warrented.

Very disappointed, awful I had high expectations but very disappointed in the food and the service.. Rice overcooked and delivered some considerable time after the main ordered items. The waiter did not seem to see this as a problem. One of the courses was cold and the remedy was that they put it in the microwave to reheat. Expensive and just plain awful

Dire dire dire, they served my wife fried chicken without telling us. She had ordered satay chicken, but they had "run out of satay sauce". But they served it any way . The waiter had no idea about the menu, the waiter advised me a beef dish was including prawns. The drinks took nearly 20 minutes to arrive. We walked out after the the so called starters. NO NO NO. So sad it used to be brilliant (pre covid). Came 100 miles for this disaster

We spent 160.00 on a meal that was much much worse than the most substandard takeaway you have every tried. Sloppy, salty, messy, dirty, .... I dont even want to think about the kitchen. We all survived, but what was meant to be a celbratory lunar new year lunch was a memorable flop. DO NOT GO HERE, GO TO THE LITTLE POP UPS AROUND BRISTOL

We went for pre theatre dinner. It was absolutely terrible. The place was a mess when we arrived- boxes of drinks around, boxes of furniture polish and chemicals and random furniture stacked up around. It was like they were planning on living soon. We were left at the front door with delivery drivers for a while so we had to find a member of staff who could seat us. We had booked, but not necessary as they were less than half full on a Saturday night. The waiters were not friendly or attentive. Customers were laughing because it honestly felt like a comedy act between them all. We were asked for our order three times despite having already given our order. Our drinks (of just a bottle of sparkling water) took over 20 mins to arrive, by which point we had asked twice about it and then it arrived without enough glasses and we had to ask. We were given a special menu all in Chinese with around 20 dishes on. We were quickly told it was £26.99 each for 5 dishes then he began to reel off the dishes. I stopped him and asked for the menu in English apologising for not being able to read it. He said no, I read to you. But it’s only 26.99, just 26.99 for five dishes. You’ll be best to order this. Have a look and decide. I told him I can’t look because I can’t read it. He said have some time and think. I asked for the normal menu and he continued trying to push the other one. Again I asked for the normal menu and it was handed over. We order prawn crackers, prawn toast and whole duck between three of us. We have now been waiting 40 minutes and no prawn crackers or prawn toast. We remind the waiter we are on a time limit as we are at the theatre and 40 minutes is a long time to have just had water. He goes to the kitchen and brings out our prawn toast. I eat it, thinking that was really hot. Until I realise what I think is hot, is actually my brain confused with frozen. The outside was hot and the inside completely frozen. Everyone stops eating and checks the middles. They are all frozen. We get the attention of the waiter who is flummoxed by the suggestion. He offers to ‘heat it back up’ to which I state I did not want food poisoning and could we just have our prawn crackers at least. They arrive and are chewy and stale with no taste- as though from a bag that has been left open a while. Another 20 minutes goes by, during which waiters are running- actually running with arms flailing- down the length of the restaurant to the constant influx of delivery drivers yelling from the front door that they need service, and we are hungry and on edge as we now have only 40 mins until the theatre. I get the waiter’s attention to ask how long and he stares into the distance for a good minute while we all look at each other in unease. I asked if he’s ok and he says, yes, I maybe ask the kitchen? I assured him that yes this is what he should do. He came back with the response that it would be at least another 15. We said we would be leaving and after the prawn toast and stale crackers we’d rather not continue anyway. As we are packing up, they come over with a bill. I refuse to pay for the stale crackers and water and we leave. There was no apology or acknowledgement just a ‘we are very busy tonight’ as we leave. 4 tables they had to serve!!! I’m assuming it was that they had oversubscribed on their delivery service. I have never been to a restaurant like this- it was awful in every aspect.

I visited Wongs a few years ago with work colleagues, and it was fantastic. Visiting Bristol's light festival, I thought it would be a good place to eat. This turned out to be a mistake. On a Saturday night, the restaurant was half-full, and desipte having no booking, we were seated immediately. We were then ignored for a while before being given a menu written in Chinese. I am not Chinese. It turns out that this was for the special banquet (£28 per head), and you can order six dishes off it. No other menu was provided, although looking at other tables there was one. A quick translation was rattled off, and the waiter disappeared to ignore us for a bit longer. Another waiter then arrived and was surprised we hadn't ordered - so we ordered drinks and food. Then waited. And waited. And waited. At least we could watch the steady stream of delivery drivers shoving past the table to get their takeouts. Eventually, some food arrived, or at least a couple of dishes did. I'm not sure it was what we ordered, but it looked good. I asked for some cutlery or chopsticks so I could see if it was good. This took a while ... And the food was surprisingly good. Unfortunately, we only had three dishes out of six, and I asked for some rice ... which should have been part of the original order. We finished the dishes, then the rice arrived. The food we had was fine. i'm sure the crispy chicken, sea bass and dumplings would have been fine too, had they ever arrived. They didn't, and I lost patience, so we grudgingly settled up and left. I spent the rest of the evening apologising to my family for the experience. Something fundamental has changed since I last visited, and not for the better. If the restaurant is reading this, then: 1. You need to have a waiter handling their own tables, rather than everyone trying to do everything. It's chaotic. 2. The waiter needs to be pleased to see you, mildly attentive, and willig to help. Try it - you might sell more. 3. The prices are far too high for what you're offering. 4. Having helmeted delivery drivers constantly waling through the restaurant really ruins the experience. It makes me feel like I'm eating in a petrol station, and also gives the impression you value deliveroo over the customers sat there and waiting. The dining experience was dire, but this restaurant has the potential to be a hidden gem. It certainly used to be, but this is a restaurant that is living on its past reputation. I don't expect it to survive unless it ups its game.

We had booked a table for our family to celebrate Chinese New Year. I'd been once before and had a delicious meal with fantastic service. Sadly, our experience this time was absolutely terrible! We ordered a couple of starters and then quite a few mains to share. There was about a 15 minute wait for the drinks and starters. We finished these quickly as we were all starving by this point and then after about another 40 minutes the waiter brought over the bill. We explained that we hadn't had our mains yet and he just looked surprised, disappeared to the kitchen but then didn't come back to communicate anything to us and continued to serve other customers. After about another 10 minutes we tried and failed several times to get the waiter's attention. When we eventually did manage to get his attention he was very vague about whether our mains were actually on the way or not and eventually we paid for our drinks and starters and left. At no point was there an apology from the staff or an acknowledgment of how bad our experience had been. The couple of starters we did have were not great at all and nothing like the quality I'd had last time I ate here. I'm not sure what has gone so wrong with this place but our experience was really disappointing and one of the worst meals out I think we've ever had!

Definitely wouldn't recommend. Looking to take my grandparents (who are Chinese) to go for a meal, I thought that this place would be nice as it was awarded a BBC award but was I wrong. We ordered a Dong Po Braised Pork Knuckle, Shanghai Greens with Crispy Mushrooms, Sichuan Boiled Sea Bass, Ma Po Tofu, Beef Flat Rice Noodles and Roast Duck. Positives: -Duck was crispy and succulent Negatives: -Pork was a hunk of meat that tasted like it was just boiled in water and tough -Ma Po Tofu was underwhelming with no Sichuan spices -Boiled Sea Bass was gone off with a horrid 'refrigerator' taste -Noodles had no flavour except for being exceptionally burnt , the flat noodles were stuck together in chunks and the beef was tough When each dish came out, there was no serving spoons. The server had minimal knowledge of the menu and didn't have server qualities. In fact the overall taste was so bad that my grandparents who had been here for over 20 years said 'they had never had a meal so bad'. Please check the reviews before you come here.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a walking tour guide. # Our starters were tasty but my friend ordered duck pancakes. Her duck and salad arrived. Ten minutes later the pancakes had not appeared. My friend had to leave her seat and find the waiter to highlight this. I ordered prawn toast which was tasty. We both ordered chicken dishes which were bland and tasteless. The service was poor and the waiter knew very little about the dishes.

I can imagine that once this was a really good spot for food. There was a lack of pride that went across the entire experience. Every dish was below average, the pancakes for the crispy duck were dry and stuck together, the chicken & cashew was insipid and not warm, the dim sum had been steamed for far too long. The route to the toilets was hindered by a ladder and some unattached pieces of skirting board. There was unfinished work in the gents toilets. The boy who served us was friendly enough but couldn't answer questions about the menu. On top of this it wasn't cheap. Main courses were £16 average. We won't be returning.

We had a street art tour guide who said that this restaurant won a BBC food prize. We decided to try it after the tour and genuinely wished I had looked at reviews online. It was after the Grandma's Chicken came out 3 minutes after ordering, despite being the only people in the restaurant, that I looked at reviews. This BBC winning dish was basically dry KFC chicken with Chinese spice. Shortly after this dish our crispy beef came out and it was cold! How is that possible unless its just being reheated. It was devoid of flavour and we didn't even eat the rice or finish the beef after realising everything was just being reheated. To top it off there was a mandatory service charge and an expensive bill for terrible food.

If you really want to go here, ensure you check the menu first. We should have been more suspicious by the fact that on a busy Saturday night the place was empty (except one older couple). Opening the menu you’re greeted by a prominent message stating a minimum charge of £16 per person. That was alarming and immediately made me study the menu suspiciously… ironically the £16 minimum wouldn’t be an issue as everything is massively overpriced. £14 for special fried rice?! Popping to the loo they appear to be renovating it and have stopped part way through, literally abandoning tools on the floor and tile levelling clips sticking out of the floor. The most odd thing of all I have to wonder if someone is living there as they had toothpaste in the gents toilet…

In July 2019 I gave Wongs an absolute 100% review. At that time we used to go to Bristol especially to visit Wongs for our special treat. We took lots of people there and they would have all agreed. It was fabulous. So today as a ‘special treat’ we took some friends there as a trip down memory lane. It was an unmitigated embarrassing disaster. We were the ‘only’ 4 in the restaurant. We were served by a scruffy disinterested old man that looked as if we’d interrupted his DIY. The toilets were filthy, the Ladies toilet was out of order. Ordered Gin and Tonics. They arrived like warm in the wrong glasses with no ice and no lemon. Two of us had dumpling starters which were out of a packet and tasteless. My sweet and sour pork was almost cold and the veg raw. The other 3 mains were equally bad. The dirty plates were waiting an hour to be collected until eventually we had to ask. We ordered coffee which was undrinkable instant chicory. The bill was an unbelievable £160 for a meal we could have bought at a takeaway for maybe £45/50 and it would have been far better. The whole horrible experience was one I would rather forget and we certainly will not be returning. A great shame because it used to be ‘the best’. As we left I notice the other Chinese in the Street was packed full. I wonder why.

Dire dining experience. Strange non welcome from rude staff. Whole place needs a good clean. Loos are disgusting, cultery and plates on table dirty. Food is dire. Tastless glop. Has nothing good going for it. Rubbish. Avoid.

This is probably the best Chinese cuisine, every meal is well balanced and clean tasting. I never was a big fan of Chinese takeaway until I was introduced to mayflower. The crispy beef is supreme. I am shocked that they have a 3.5 rating on trip advisor, they deserve 5 star easy.

Not bad, but very unusually it needed more salt! It’s the first time I’ve ever added salt to a Chinese takeaway meal. Pretty basic thing to forget. Needed more umami flavour too I guess you forgot the msg and the salt too? Needs more soy Udon should have plenty of soy sauce and umami flavour.
