Wombourne Fish Bar in South Staffordshire

Poor - pretty sure it was all re fried we had to wait for it all to be cooked as we went in around 5:15 which I thought was promising but it turns out they must have just been re heating it.The chips were hard and cold by the time we got home less than a mile away in the car. The fish was a third of the size under the thick soggy batter and cold - just read your response I can assure you the review was real ,your food was barely edible and the chips were definitely re heated I get costs are high and times are hard but please don’t call me a liar ! your food is poor- own it and improve !

Must admit its one of the best takeaways I have had since moving to Wombourne! Delivery was on time and the food was piping hot and delicious! Only thing was I think I annoyed the delivery driver as I paid cash and only had 2 twenties so I had to go looking for money in the house to make correct change! overall top quality and definitely will order again

I went here on Friday night. I ordered fish and mushy peas. The batter on the fish was soggy all over and the fish didn't taste good either. Very disappointed

Went there only for chips they where probably the best chips I've had in a long time I will be returning.

Ordered food and waited over an hour and still no food when I rang them the food hadn't even been put together, I then asked to cancel my order and when the girl asked a man shouted why, I asked to put him on the phone but he wouldn't and the girl said it will be with me in 15 minutes. Don't think it is fare for the young staff to have to deal with managers mistakes. The chicken when it arrive was so dry I couldn't eat and kebab was cold ,its first time ordering from them and won't be ordering again.

Was enjoying some chit-chat with the lady serving when she casually dropped a racist slur in the small talk! Chips were ok, won't be going back.

Since refurb food quality gone down hill

I placed an order for roe and chips special x 3 and a chicken meat special. I ordered this around 12:45 and was told it would be ready in 5 minutes. Quick service but the roe/batter was dry, like it had been warmed up, the battered chips were tasteless, curry sauce bland, and the chicken meat was bland and had been plastered in watery thin mayo which made my husband feel sick. I don't live in Wombourne, I was visiting my in-laws, I should have read the reviews first. I will try elsewhere in future.

Amazing food (one of the best in wombourne) food always good, had a large kebab and chips and I couldn’t even finish it was so much but it was amazing (left overs the next day lol)

It's been 7 years since my original review, and since then, the shop has had an update, so thought it's time for my review to get one too. Whenever I use Wombourne Fish Bar (which is possibly too often!) the food is excellent and so is the service. Both the doner and mixed kebabs are always spot on, the fish is always good, and the battered chips are the best around bar none. I've had the XL masala fish a few times too, and that's always great. Portion sizes are always generous and I can't fault anything. The shop is always busy, so that must tell you something about the quality and service. If it was no good, people wouldn't come. I can't inderstand where the poor reviews are coming from; it's with sour grapes from other chippies, or just miserable people with too much time on their hands. If you've genuinely had a bad experience, why not come back / call up and let them sort it out. No pun intended, but something smells fishy! Ordered gluten free and was shocking the curry sauce was just water and the chips were still frozen and had to be put in the bin

Had a gluten free takeaway last night (2 mini fish ,sausage in batter, 4 scollops, and a curry sauce very,very nice.Just one criticism to much batter coating even though the batter was very nice just a bit too much. 👍will definitely be back.

I might be a bit biased as this was my local chippy growing up, but I was very surprised to see the number of negative reviews on here. I’ve never had a negative experience (let alone food poisoning) over several years of patronage — including since new management. Always been the best chippy in the village, and miles better than the anaemic chips offered at any other place i’ve lived in the UK. I don’t understand the suggestion of a recent downgrade in quality. Besides, I feel it is quite a knee-jerk reaction to review-bomb an independent business over quality when it’s unassuming comfort food, people’s preference in chips vary and its offered at a similar price point to what you’ll get for something microwaved from Spoons.

Went for a gluten free battered sausage and potato scallop, small wait for it to be cooked fresh but was very tasty and very worth the wait, even added a few chips to the order. Some of the better gluten free batter I have had. Staff mentioned that you could call ahead for speedier service.

Used to go here regularly but not since new owners. I had mini fish and chips - Fish batter hard and over cooked, fish dry and chewy. Chips; i like orange chips so that wasn't an issue but they also were hard Warmed up? left standing? I suppose it was a clue that it was Friday evening and it was empty. !! I wont be going again. In answer to the owner's response: You say you are not new, but you are different to the owners when i used to go regularly. In fact i have been since you have been there but wasn't too impressed that time either. I would also like to add that you don't know what the food is like until you get it home and start to eat it. Who wants to / has time to wrap it back up and take it back? So thank you for your response and offer but no thank you.

Cheeseburger and chips. The cheeseburger was fine but really didn't enjoy the chips. They were orange and many weren't worth eating, so threw most of them away. £7. I thought it was well overpriced. (My original rating for good was a bit low tbh, so I've increased it. I just don't like the orange chips.)

Chips were so dry, they’d probably been sitting there all afternoon then served to me. I honestly thought the battered chips would taste good but I was so wrong. Never thought chips could taste so bad. Worst chips I’ve ever eaten. I’ve had battered orange chips a billion times from my local chippy but these have to be the worst.The girl that was serving was so disconnected and came across rude. I don’t think she wants to be there to be honest she looked miserable.

Can't comment on atmosphere or service as my husband purchased it not me but the food was absolutely vile! Ordered 3 mini fish, medium chips and a chicken meat. Chicken meat was ok I think, my husband ate it but the fish was absolutely disgusting! I cut it open and saw that it was yellow and hard, I had one mouthful and threw it all away. Tasted disgusting and felt sick all night afterwards. Chips weren't great either. Wouldn't feed it to a dog. Would award zero stars if possible and won't be returning. As posted in my original review which was 10 months ago, we ordered our food for takeaway so it was a bit difficult to make you aware when we'd already got home. The fish was as I said vile and threw it away and felt extremely sick afterwards. So as this page is to post reviews I am entitled to give my opinion about that we experienced. Instead of writing a sarcastic reply, an apology would have been appreciated to try rectify the poor quality food we received. You have shown to myself and potential customers what your attitude is like and therefore I feel that my opinion to never return is justified. Many thanks!

Really nice food and really hygienic reasonably priced and old battered chips

We just had large chips curry sauce, got it home only live a minute away the chips were so so greasy and cold just awful I couldn’t eat it!. Curry sauce large pot cold and only filled half way ! Was meant to be a large. We feel robbed will never be going back. We don’t recommend at all just awful!.

First time having the newly available gluten free fish and chips ! Cooked fresh and was absolutely lovely really light “ batter” just need to remember to order small chips as portions huge ! Delighted to have GF option thank you

This place is absolutely amazing, food is always so good and the Donna meat is unreal. Portion sizes are way above many chip shops I’ve been too. Definitely recommend, always the chippy I order from, from now on

I tried this place today as an alternative to the failing Penn Chippy. It was worse. Soggy batter (although the underlying cod was quite nice); radioactive-looking orange chips; and unimpressive customer service. I won’t be back.

Just been to Wombourne fish bar tonight ordered two mini fish and chips and a dinner kebab I must admit it was poor fish hard and dry and the kebab was wrong no salad but mayo on it somehow I don’t think I’ll be going there for a while

Been tonight and was very disappointed my boyfriend said a blonde girl even put the probe into the pies but they were cold and pastry was hard. Beans cold and vile tasting and chips cold and also a funny taste all went in bin what a waste of money will not be going again vile 🤢🤮 Very angry 😠 x

Just ordered fish & chips from the newly opened Chippy which we were looking forward too & I must admit its the worst fish & chips we've ever had. Soggy & wet batter, dry fish & claggy chips. Peas no taste & the curry sauce was watery & bland. May just have had a bad one which happens but if they carry on serving food like this they will lose lots of business. Won't be rushing back

Very dry, very brittle and tasteless. We couldn't find any evidence of actual potatoe in 90% of each serving..the worst chips I have eaten ...don't your money,

i ordered a cheese burger and it was raw and dripping with grease and blood wouldn’t recommend at all.

Avoid this chip shop. It was the best around but now it is dirty, the owners don’t have a clue. The food is disgusting, paid £10 for fish & chips and had to put it in the bin. It was horrendous. The fish had obviously been frozen, it was flat and tasteless…

The beautiful young lady who always seems to be on every time I come in is so pleasant to be around. However not the best idea to have just one person serving on an evening as was waiting a while just to be served today along with a queue of others out of the door. Other than that, as a regular, food is great and so is service too😁

Nice little chippy very popular with the locals serve all the usual food kebab meat fish. Pies chicken. Went last weekend and had a lovely fish n chip takeaway only issue is the girl gave us a scallop instead of a tinned roe and it was too much hassle to take it back

Service ok but no hair hair nets staff touching face then pitta breads without washing hands then tried to charge £1.50 per bottle of pop even though price marked at £1.25 when asked she said no you have to pay £1.50 really shameful

Mini fish was absolutely horrible. I ate the chips and threw the rest away as did the rest of the family. It tasted awful.

Wife just come back with the smallest fish I think I have ever seen . It was supposed to be a large . It's smaller then the small used to be . Don't know if it's changed hands or just getting greedy but I'll go myself next time and if they try and serve me that as a large fish I'll tell them to stick it !looks like you pay more for the cardboard packaging then the food

Our normal go to chippy but not the best tonight, Luke warm and chips were mainly pitted with black so pretty inedible, not sure if the fact it was only warm coincided with it being late? Hopefully a one off.

Worst chip shop on the planet. We ordered a haddock and a plaice which we waited 10 mins for. It was the worst experience ever and we threw them in the bin. Avoid like the plaque or visit and get the plaque

Just had battered chips and fishcake. Chips not edible as like cardboard. Had to throw them away. . Terrible!

Food order was late, cold and incomplete. Rang the fish bar they would not deliver the rest of the order as the delivery driver had gone home. Suggested I should come and get the rest of the order even though I had paid for delivery. I wont be using the fish bar again

Three mini fish specials barely touched and thrown in the bin. I would give you no stars if I could! The fish was absolutely disgusting 🤢 and not edible, the smell, taste and texture was sickening to the extent that all 3 meals got thrown. I don't know what fish this was or what supplier you use, fish out of the local canal would have proberbly tasted better!. The chips were hard and under cooked and the mushy peas were drinkable. I will be steering clear of this place from. Now on your food is actually gut wrenching, never had. A bad experience in the past but seriously think your cook needs replacing 😡😡😡

Chips were awful, I think the oil was either old or burnt, chips were hard and stuck together in a big ball. Couldn't eat them , they went straight in the bin. Used to be lovely fish and chips but won't go again, complete waste of money

This place is unbelievably awfull, We found RAT droppings within our food, The young blonde girl and manager proceeded to refuse to give us a refund after showing evidential proof. RUDE and a very unplecent place to go.

Received wrong order so I caught up with the driver as she had forgotten to leave my daughters bottle of pop, the driver called Mandy at the chippie to say the order was wrong from then it went downhill. I ordered a large Donnie meat and chips in a tray, large curry sauce, kids box meal, large cod and chips, what arrived was 2 roes, bag of chips , cod and chips and the kids meal, no donnor meat chips no curry sauce, I called the driver into the kitchen to show her my order and my receipt what was missing she agreed the order was wrong then called the chippie and Mandy answered, Mandy was so rude and accused me of hiding the donnor kebab, she said they have cameras in the chippie and the order sent was correct, so we’re did the 2 roes come from? She then said she was calling the police to charge me with fraud lol, all I wanted was the correct order, I would never step foot in this chippie again even if my life depended on it. Mandy is one very rude lady and clearly shouldn’t be working with the general public

Something has gone wrong here. Think there has been a change in ownership. The quality is just not what it used to be. What a shame the fish was as good as any seaside resort but now its average at best - cod is either undercooked/overcooked or just standing too long. Chips have also changed to a strange bright orange colour, though today there was some improvement with the chips. Will be looking elsewhere. Always 100% satisfied until about 4 months ago.

I don't know why they advertise for staff. As I've messaged 3-4 when advertised, they read my messages and comments but theynever reply. Ignorant

Really disappointed today. Always praised this chip shop but today the service was terrible. They forgot to put our food in once ordered. Then when it was finally ready they gave it to someone else who hadn't even ordered the same thing. Wasted 35 minutes, so had to get a refund and go elsewhere

Food was delivered in a plastic bag on the back of a bike in 13 degree weather in the wind and rain. Food was cold and wet. Took one bite, binned it and requested a refund.
