Wok Chef in Purbeck

I went here as a pitstop before I went on a causal boat trip with my partner. We tried to get some prawn crackers to see us through, and when they came out they were all chewy in the middle, it might be as there normal chef was off but even so.

Ignore the clowns below, extremely tasty food, I’ve sampled Chinese takeaway all over the Uk and Wok Chef is up there with the best. It’s not uncommon for small businesses in Swanage to be cash only either… embarrassing comment! Prices have increased a bit but what hasn’t gone up? Lovely polite lady behind the counter, thank you Wok Chef for filling my stomach when I can’t be bothered to cook! Lee

This was decent I had a very good time but there was a kid who looked about 13 working there. I liked the chicken dish I got, can't remember what it was though.

We looked at the menu online and we thought they were ok prices, slightly over priced, but the we got to the place to order the prices had gone up. There was also this young boy who was not very friendly. They also only take cash, which is a bit suspicious.

My family and I went to Wok Chef in the afternoon and noted down their closing times written on their own front window clearly stating they close at 10.30pm. We planned our evening around this and ensured we made our way back there in time. We came back to Wok Chef just after 10pm, only to find their blinds were down and doors were locked. We looked through the door window to see the employees sat on their phones with their family and it was clear they had closed early. We knocked on the door to question their own given opening hours - to which they replied, the chef had gone home, they had no customers and decided to close early. My family and I were very disappointed and left with nowhere else to eat as all other places had closed (in line with their opening hours) the employee we spoke to didn’t seem to care or apologise for the misleading information they are giving their customers. Will not be returning and suggest they correct their opening hours ASAP so other customers don’t plan their evening around this and are left with the same disappointment that we had.

I would never eat from here again, the meat (chicken and pork) was chewy and poor quality. The green Thai curry was the worst dish and bore no relation to the actual dish. Avoid like the plague.

We ordered sweet and sour Hong Kong chicken, egg fried rice and stir fried broccoli... and it was DELICIOUS!! Really tasty and the chicken was juicy. Service was friendly and quick. Would definitely visit again!

We thought we would try here as only Chinese in swanage, prices had gone up from the menu we had in apartment, small dishes that didn’t half fill the pot and tasteless food.

Whilst holidaying in Swanage we decided to try this Chinese close to where we were staying. We were not disappointed as the 5 of us were really impressed with our choices. Recommend this takeaway.

Disgusting food full of salt waking up in the night time to drink some water my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth there was that much salt in there food now I know I ordered the chilli salt chicken but come on you should carry a health warning with that dish then had the chicken curry and the chicken taste like rubber never tasted chicken like it went straight into the bin then they take the money of you then tell you there’s a 30 minute wait for your food if you can call it that perhaps you should tell people the waits time first so as a local will I be back never

Was in the area for work and visited a couple of times. Service is through a screen at the shop (July ‘21). Advisable to order by phone and using the menu, order by number as the receptionist English language not great. The food was hot and freshly cooked and I avoided the cloyingly sweet and sticky dishes so common at Chinese takeaways opting for simple prawns with ginger and spring onions, stir fried bamboo shoots and water chestnuts and rice. A bit above the average in quality and the portions plentiful. Recommended

Just ordered £30 worth of food and omg what a disgusting place. It was so dry I wanted to cry. Cold and minging. Urghhhh how anyone eata here is beyind me. Its like eating sand everythinggggg is dry as hell :(

The takeaway is tucked away from the town centre high up the narrow High Street. Parking is a bit of a challenge as already mentioned in another review. The food is generally average but they do a better job when it comes to the Malaysian style Chinese food. On a positive note, they are friendly, keep the time well for phone orders and are generous in terms of food portion.

Ordered by phone and it was ready for collection in 15 minutes. Parking is a bit interesting. Best to have someone drive and someone to collect. Food is fine. All the dishes we ordered were nice and tasty. Price is reasonable. We had a lovely take away and will definitely use again.

We are regulars and never had a bad takeaway from wok chef, always tasty, quick & hot. Chicken satay and Thai red curry are delicious. Thanks for all your hard work.

Saturday night order for 2. Lacked flavour, chicken sweet and sour rubbery, strange special fried rice with strips of chicken and char Sui, omelette and a sweet sauce. Ordered a takeaway about a month ago, was impressed with the collection set up, sanitiser, plastic window. Food was great, very tasty; Prawn Toast appetizer did it's job, crisp toast flavoured prawns, set us up for the main course. King Prawn curry was well flavoured but not overpowering, really complemented the chicken chow mein. Side of Thai Spring rolls, crispy, tasty, full of bean sprouts which worked with the Show Mein noodles. Left the review for a while as I was waiting for the tummy problems which previous reviews say they experienced. Never happened to me. I wonder what the health authorities said when these people related their stories and provided samples of their leftovers and containers? I only use this takeaway every 6 months or so, but have never had a problem. If I really had to criticise I'd say the onion and mushroom, though firm to the bits seemed to have lost their taste in the cooking, but really that was a minor issue. Thoroughly recommend this place.

Got a takeaway for 6 as staying in a holiday house a few doors down. We got several different dishes and enjoyed them all (other than my son moaning that his crispy chilli beef was more batter and hardly any beef) A lot of negative recent reviews so I wanted to say there was nothing at all wrong with our order or unpleasant about the food. Google reviews are much more positive than on here so don't be put off!

Havent been here in a few years decided to try it out and wish I hadn't only got a few things and cost £25 they got the order wrong and our curry had a big hair in it which wasnt ours Gross...wont visit again

Hardly ever post reviews but had to make an exception after buying a takeaway from Wok Chef for the first time this evening. The “food” was so awful and bland. Watery sweet and sour, dry tasteless rice. Hardly any veg in the vegetable chow mein and what there was was limp and slimy. I reckon you would find more flavour and nutrition in a toilet roll than one of their spring rolls. I really don’t like writing a negative review about a local small business, but this place really does need to up its game and put more effort into making edible food rather than something we had to throw away. We are Swanage residents but regretfully we will in future have to travel further afield whenever we fancy a nice Chinese takeaway. I don’t know how they are surviving but presume they are relying on visiting tourists that are not likely to come back anyway rather than relying on returning local custom which would require them putting more effort into providing a good quality service.

Nice tasty and fresh. Ask if vegetarian or vegan, as they do bean curd in lovely sauces etc. Highly recommended.

I cant rate this Chinese takeaway enough!For over a year now we have had consistent amazing food, correct orders and great service.My partner is a vegan and has a great choice here.Also they will do most dishes with no MSG if you ask.I can rate the Singapore Rice Noodles and Chicken balls.You have t phone thru your order and pay in cash since covid19. Also now only open on reduced service Thursday thru to Sunday.

I’ve tried this takeaway so many times, and it don’t get any better just worse, chow mein always so try and everything is so salty. I’ve given up using this takeaway.

We had dinner from here last night.. After going to bed I woke at 2am with the worst D & V I've had for many years and felt rough as hell all night.. Maybe it's a one off but has put me off eating from here..

Really nice meal very reasonably priced and ne of the few Chinese restaurants with tofu as vegans this was very helpful!

Fair menu, quick service, not too pricey, tasty food. A meal for six served up in 15 minutes. Parking is not good for collection though...

We were in town for a long weekend and ordered Chinese takeout from here on Saturday night. Needless to say the weekend was ruined because we couldn’t leave the house as my brother had food poisoning.. very unhappy!!I would not recommend eating here!! I wish I’d searched them on tripadvisor before ordering and see the comment about poor hygiene :(

Shop assistant handling food with bare hands then answered the telephone and proceeded to operate keyboard to place the order.Prior to this she had taken cash from previous customer.When questioned about food handling hygiene ie: why are you not wearing gloves when handling food.Her reply was I wipe my hands regularly.My reply was, what with? She could not reply.Needless to say I left my order behind and went elsewhere.

Quick, fresh vegetables and noodles done well. Main well known dishes such as chow meon, teriyaki duck, sweet n sour Hong Kong style all loaded with veg n good portion of meat. Some of other dishes a little more fusion than normal but still fresh n full of taste. Quick service with a smile. A safe bet if passing. Closed on Tuesday's.

A very mixed bag of tastes - some of the food was really nice and some of it was pretty bland like the chow mein. We have eaten here before but quite a while back and I'm sure I remember it being better last time. Would probably order again but wouldn't be my first choice take away.

Sweet and sour veg pretty bland and barely any seaweed to a portion! Not memorable, has been better in the past.

we had the beef curry and chips which was good but the duck chowmein and duck in lemon sauce was not very nice the duck was hard and very fatty no soft meat on it to eat, the noodles tasted like they had been recooked 2 or 3 times and the smoked spiced chicken was so hard couldn't eat . we have had takeaways here a lot in past and always been very nice but this time put me off going again as its not that cheap and don't want to waste money on bad food

Good food at reasonable prices with quick service. This is a takeaway only - no seating etc available.

This us a truly excellent takeaway. No tables so definitely puck up and take home and don't expect delivery. I don't there is a delivery service from any place in Swanage.....business opportunity anyone??

Tried this place twice now and vowed never again!

The food here was so delicious we went back a second time for food during our weeks stay in swanage. Beware though as take cash only so visit the cash point before you collect.

Had a takeaway from Wok Chef and it was fine. Food was well cooked and a decent portion. Not the best but certainly not the worst.

Just had family take away from here and it was completely disgusting. I will not believe in a million years this is chicken they are serving here, obviously imported from china it was slimy fatty and impossible to chew

Awful food - typically what Chinese people would only serve to Brits who are ignorant of traditional Chinese cuisine, they would not serve up such dreadful dishes to their family!

Never had a bad meal from here, the food is freshly cooked and vegetables are lovely and still have a nice bite to them. Barbecue sauce is the best I've been able to find in a long time.

Wonderful take away, great food, freshly cooked food, shame this place is shut on a Tuesday. We all fancy a Chinese in the week lol

So disappointed! Some good reviews here but our meal was really poor. The meat was strange and had no flavour. The rice wasn't cooked properly and it was all just a bit bland. Threw the rest of it away. Wish we hadn't bothered!

Great value for money. Freshly cooked tasty food. Great efficient service. Closed on Tuesdays. Sometimes have to wait for your order but they tell you in advance, and is well worth the wait. Cannot recommend enough.

If the locals use it..being a grockle for the week and seeing locals going in and out had to try it..good size takeaway portions loads of choices freindly welcome and great tasting food

I ordered a takeaway from here after looking on trip advisor and seeing good reviews. The food was fabulous and was piping hot! Great variety of food on the menu. I would highly recommend.

Fantastic takeaway. The lady on the phone is a complete delight. Food always excellent. Beware that they sometimes shut on Tuesday's (normally when I have the most powerful craving for Chinese!). All dishes are equally fab - we make it our business to try new stuff! Enjoy.

Very impressed, quick service, very busy with food going out all the time and to top it all the food was great and unlike one of the reviews we found it reasonably priced. Try it, I'm sure you'll enjoy it as we did.

Wasn't very impressed with this at all...especially the beef curry..it was floppy fatty bits of 'meat' with no taste at all..me and my partner couldn't eat that 'meat' at all it made us urge...was it even cooked?

We had... sweet and sour crispy chicken balls, egg fried rice, beef in in black bean sauce, chicken in spicy chicken sauce, veg chow mein, king prawn with mushrooms and prawn crackers for three people. Phoned through and ready to collect 15 minutes later. Good portion sizes and all very tasty and not salty and glutametey like so many chinese take aways we've had. They spicy had some heat in it too. We'll be going back next time we fancy a chinese.

Had a Monday night takeaway from here as a last night of our long weekend stay. Once we found it (it's on a one way street and I had to go a long way round to get to it - perhaps I should have keyed it into the sat nav rather than glance at a map!) the woman behind the counter was very friendly and welcoming, advising us what was in a few dishes and offered alternative sauces if we preferred. We had House Special Chow Mein and Special Fried Rice with Sweet & Sour Chicken Balls and Duck Spring Rolls. All the food was piping hot when we got back to our apartment the other end of town. Generous sized portions and tasted very nice. Price was roughly what I had expected.

Great chinese, not the biggest of menus but very nice. Cannot fault. Standard price for Chinese takeaway.

We have used them several times due to lack of alternative. Food is ok but massively over priced. We had a set meal for two, but found when I got home that there was no starter in the bag. I phoned back and was accused of lying- it must be my fault!! All it would have taken was an apology and to give us what we had paid for, but this was not coming. We won't be going back again.

Lovely food from our local take away. A good assortment of dishes and full of flavour. The place is always busy but the staff, especially Sarah, are always efficient and chatty.

Well what a little gem this turned out to be. Staying in Swanage for the weekend and nobody could be bothered to cook so we decided on a Chinese. Had walked past this earlier in the day and whilst the outside is perhaps a little tired decided to give it a go. So glad we did, food was delicious, staff were very friendly and helpful. Great choice on the menu including some Thai dishes. Prices were what I would expect from a takeaway. Will definitely go back next time we are in Swanage.
