Wirksworth Fish Bar in Derbyshire Dales

We visit occasionally and whilst it’s not as good as our local chippy, in the past it has generally been ok. Not sure whether it has changed hands, but today we were quite disappointed. The chips were quite anaemic, oversized and not particularly tasty. We asked for a small fish and I’m not sure what it was but it was tasteless. We had a large chips to share, small fish, a mince beef onion pie and large gravy which came to £14, which we don’t think was particularly good value for money. Only went in because our local doesn’t open on Wednesdays, probably won’t bother again.

Avoid this place. Been before and it was absolutely disgusting then, but thought I would give it the benefit of the doubt and give it another try. Went in there and had a large portion of chips and for £4.50 would not have fed one, let alone a few of us and then got given a hard glare from the woman behind the counter when I challenged the portion size. Also ordered a can of coke and a battered sausage and was charged over £13 (see picture) - it was not fit to give my dog. Didn’t eat the sausage or the chips which had a weird taste! Sort yourselves and your food out will never buy anything here again!

Very little fish inside soggy batter. Masses of chips but tasteless. Not value for money. First time visit. Won't go there again.

Delicious cooked to order fish and chips with mushy peas. Good sized portion of fish, lovely chips obviously cooked in very clean oil. Can eat in or take away. Will be back.

My friend and I shared a large fish and chips. I was looking forward to a nice crispy meal. The chips and batter were soggy, no colour or texture. The fish seemed to be reconstituted fish with no flavour. The portion of chips was massive - enough to feed 4 people. Unnecessary - too many overweight people around. Best to serve a sensible portion size. The price was approximately £12 - just over. I was extremely disappointed and suggest you request crispy fish and chips when you order. They most likely had been cooked a while. I ate from here several years ago and they were exceptional.

I have frequented this fish shop for the past 9 weeks. Once a week, I pop over to get my usual, never a variation, always the same meal item. Small battered sausage, chips, mushy peas and curry sauce. Always excellent, great service, staff always friendly enough but I have docked a star as I can never get my head around the pricing. 9 times, same meal, no deviations and 5 different prices. £5.OO, £6.OO, £6.90, £7.20 and tonight £7.60? Was only £6.00 last week. Totally flummoxed. Now I do know that the portion size has never been any different too, so where do they get these variations in price?

Order a Mixed Kebab for £6.70. In all my years of travelling…. This was smallest potion I ever seen. Chicken bit of the kebab was less then my palm of my hand…. None existent actually…..And the kebab was not great….. If you order from here make sure you plan a 2nd meal afterwards as you going to need it with the small portion this shop gives….

Best fish and chips in Derbyshire! Top quality product and friendly staff. Everything you could want in a good chippie!

We had a takeaway Haddock and chips which was fresh and delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We also had a gluten free cod and chips. The batter was superb and crispy despite being gluten free and the fish was delicious and fresh. Would highly recommend.

Best fish & chips we've had yet - freshly cooked cod and chips. We have fish and chips here regularly and they seem to be improving all the time.

Wirksworth's famous chippy. Honest traditional food at a fair price. The chips are delicious and the portions are enormous. Don't miss it.

We visited on a Wednesday evening at 7.45pm, the serving staff were pleasant and that's about as good as it got. The lady cooking was totally sullen, the food reflected that! The chips were tasteless, the fish was the same, too much batter, greasy and dry, an art to achieve? Steak pudding was very soggy and mushy, parts of which inedible. The portions were considerably smaller than they had been on our last visit, this certainly does not encourage us to support local businesses and this one will not be getting a return visit until we hear that it has improved to it's former quality.

Stayed in Wirksworth in March 2021 and had fish n chips from this excellent chip shop. very tasty fish, most excellent chips. Wonderful staff, and great value for money. Highly recommend.

Visiting and staying in Wirksworth before this second lockdown, we chose fish and chips for one evenings meal. There was a small wait, socially distanced, before ordering, showing its popularity. The manager and a younger member of staff working, the manager was friendly and chatty, and praised his young colleague for her days work (it had been very busy apparently). We had a 10 min wait for our fish and chips which was not a problem at all...we had to wait for it to cook...because of this the food was really really tasty..crisp delicious batter, tasty fish, and perfect chips! The portions were huge too! Great service, great food, would love to return one day...best of luck to this business during the next few months.

We have eaten fish and chips with mushy peas and curry sauce twice in the past couple of weeks. Only one small portion of chips needed for two people. The fish batter is light and crispy with a good chunky portion of fish, the chips are lovely. All hot and fresh tasting. We ate our takeawy in the Feather Star...perfect with an excellent pint of real ale. Friendly helpful staff and owner.

Very nice fish and chips the staff are very talkative while you are waiting normally you are not waiting long due to the quick and hard working staff, I wouldn’t recommend going at 12:30-1:00 on a week day as the kids from the school down the road like to come up and have chips which therefore leads to a big long queue, they also do mixed kababs, not very easy parking seems there’s no parking spots and it’s in the middle of the market place which then makes it very busy, I would definitely recommend it!!

Really good quality, some of the best we tried when staying in the beautiful Peak District town of Wirksworth.

Truly great little take away! The food is really good quality and huge choice / excellent pricing. COD is white and fresh, everyone else delighted with their food, will be going again before we leave!!

Lots to choose from n this choppy, which is in a good location, you can get your food and then do a short walk to the market square and sit under the tree to enjoy them.

Dropped in here for lunch. Had the last available table! Ordered the Small Fish, Chips and Peas. Look at my photo please. All this for £4.20! Could not fault it. Chips were especially nice. Would recommend.

Having spotted how busy the shop was despite the indifferent reviews here, we decided to have a fish takeaway on the last night of our holiday. What a great choice!We had two haddock and a large chips. Very tasty fish in crisp batter (and not too much batter either) and the chips were good as well. The price was about the same as our local chippie and the fish was almost as good! Very quick service.

We recently moved to wirksworth and tried the chippy which was absolutely delicious the chips were perfect and the food was fresh and hot and great service. Unfortunately we went again last week and realized it's now under new management the quality of the food is not even half as good as before the chips are absolutely disgusting and it seems very small portions for big prices. Not impressed at all and left very dissapointed as we love a good chippy dinner

We visited as a family of four, as we were in the area.The shop was busy, which is a good sign and the staff were very helpful.We all had cod and chips, with sides like curry sauce and mushy peas. All was very nice but the cod was especially fresh, tasty and well cooked. None of it was greasy.We heard from a local, that it’s under new management but not sure if that’s true. Well worth a visit!

Always go for the 'Bag of chips' with a fishcake, mini-fish or sausage and a pot of sauce/peas. If you do this you will get a portion of chips and choice about three times bigger than the 'Fish 'n' chip special' that comes in the smallest tray of chips they can find. I feel sorry for the staff, they always seem chased like a shark by the manager, seem very under pressure to give the smallest portion they can make. So Value for money if you pick wisely.

We chose Wirksworth Fish Bar purposely as we wanted a dinner of Fish & Chips. You can sit in but we chose to take ours away. My husband chose plaice to go with his chips well we've seen thicker sheets of toilet roll, it was very thin and small. Hubby didn't think much of it. The chips were ok as was the sausage in batter that I had. The best item of the meal was a spring roll we ordered which was delicious.

Called in for a fish and chip lunch waited behind a woman with a shipping order only to be told he should have closed 20 mins ago? But go on then you can have what's left, at full price of course ? Destinctly average?

I was in Wirksworth for an evening event and having not eaten I had noted that there were a few places in Wirksworth. In the end I went for good British takeaway, although I actually chose to eat in. I ordered Chicken Breast and Chips and was pleasantly surprised at the good sized chicken breast and a good size portion of chips which were the best I have had in a long while from a chip shop. The eating in tables were basic but not cramped and ideal for my quick visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Evening opening time is at 17:00.

Although extremely busy with the Carnival on and queue out the door they were serving at a great pace. Staff were friendly and smiling despite being so busy. Fish and Chips were great, piping hot. Would certainly use again when in town.

Lovely fish and chip diner with busy trade and available to eat in or take away. It appears to be a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.

I orderd a chicken burger with no bread and a portion of chips with peas first off they asked if I wanted sauce I said mayo so she put mayo in my bread and I said I can’t have bread so she mumbled something chucked my burger in the fryer and then started serving someone else then they got my peas wrong never once appoligise for getting my order wrong despite me saying several times no bread with burger

A regular fish and chip bar where you know what you are getting, always clean and service is quick and friendly.

Friendly service, nicely cooked food and very fair portion sizes for the price. Theres not many better chippies in the area!

Popped in here while we were waiting to move into our holiday cottage. We had a bag of chips each and shared a fish which we ate in the car across the road. We could probably have managed with a portion of chips between us too as I was struggling to finish mine. Very tasty though.

Called in for fish and chips recently. Acceptable, but nothing more. They had no chicken at all, which was odd as it was early evening on a Saturday.

Freshly cooked cod and chips was the best I have tasted. Took a while to cook but was worth the wait.

Hemos comido antes y ha sido fantástico. Regresamos esta noche y la mitad de la comida era buena para ser justos. Pedimos una carne y papas fritas y no döner de pollo era puesto en el kebab. Ensalada cortar en pequeñas piezas. Pobre. El tipo que era muy grosero y nos gritó como pedimos. Muy torpe y maleducado. Las niñas en estaban trabajando muy duro, y habló con ellos tan mal. Big bully. No hay carne y riñones pasteles o pepinillos para rematar. Probablemente iría en otro lugar la próxima vez no muy bueno.

Well, i came to Wirksworth looking for a nice weekend. But i was let down by the chip shop. I asked for chips without salt and vinegar.

Mientras me paso el atractivo del olor, no tener patatas fritas por un tiempo no pude resistirme a, enfermo verdad estaban bien, pero no tan bueno como esperaba. Tenía muchas más oscura y no estaba seguro de si habían sido re-fritos o no.

Fuimos a principios de sábado por la noche para patatas fritas y pasta de pescado n. Mi marido tenía un personal broma todos re no sólo empanadas tartas como empanadas no vender! Él incluso ofreció que él use el teléfono para anillo de mí como me había pedido una pasta!

We were staying in Wirksworth for a few days and decided to get fish and chips. They were lovely. Huge portions as well. There were 5 of us and we all agreed they were really tasty.

Cannot fault it , sit in or take out, clean, fantastic food, friendly staff, always 10/10. Generous portions

Nothing special but offers a good range beyond fish & chips. Open daily except Sundays. Our order was cooked fresh.

Another visit and another disappointment. The chips are consistently undercooked and a touch hard in the middle.

This is a great place to eat for the hungry traveller. Quantities are more than generous, prices cheap and the quality of food is reasonable.

Food ok, but can be hit and miss. Most of the time it's good but boy do you know when it's a bad time...Staff very nice and helpful. Somewhere to sit in and eat if needed too. Kebabs are nice.

I am not a big fish and chip fan but we arrived in Wirksworth with empty tummies so we went to the fish bar. The fish and chips were good, I ate them all and good value for money.

Food was served quickly and was hot . Small place to sit in but we were not made to feel we had to rush our food and leave, Was a busy place used by the local people .

I have been looking forward to returning here for a year as the last chips we had were lovely. On requesting if we could sit in and eat our chips, we were told that we couldn't due to them closing shortly. However, there were still 35 minutes remaining until the closing time stated on the door. The chips themselves were poor quality and only just warm enough to eat as was the curry sauce. We won't be visiting again.

The fish and chips from here were humungous!! I went in to be greated by very friendly staff. Asked for two large portions of fish and chips and curry sauce £11.20 what a bargain. When I say large they were whale size, not that either of us were complaining. They were delicious and proper chips. Definitely worth a visit

Very nice and a very good price for chips fish and peas which was £3.80 to eat in which I thought was very good the staff were nice and friendly.

Brilliant! We placed a £200 fish and chip order, for our pre-wedding evening meal whilst camping locally, with about 40-50 friends and family. Everything was present and correct, all labelled up for easy distribution and ready to pick up boxed and waiting for us :) amazing service with a smile, even on a busy Friday night and we bemused the waiting queue with our huge order too ;) Thanks everyone - very yummy too :)

As an ex-fish&chip shop-owning family, I have high standards for fish& chips!I could tell from the smell around the shop that the fat was rancid, but in the absence of anything else, we tried it.Cheap, but not worth having I'm afraid.They need to keep their fat and fryers clean!!
