Riverside Traditional Fish&Chips in Derbyshire Dales

Not sure why this has only 3.5 stars ? Has the chippy recently changed ownership? Genuinely the best Haddock and chips , mushy peas snd curry sauce for miles around. The Haddock and chips were both cooked to perfection - and the batter was thin crispy and tasty - equally delicious! Very generous portion sizes especially the sizes of haddock we were given. If your visiting Bakewell and fancy some top quality British staple fare then Riverside is a must try!

How has this place only got 3.5 stars?😮 Visited here when in Bakewell last week, following another long walk we both fancied fish and chips. All I can say is that this has to be the best chippy we've had for years - lovely chips, not too fat nor were they greasy. The fish (we had cod) was amazing, lovely thick piece covered in the lightest / crunchiest batter, which is never a good thing as I then tend to eat too much!! Would be sure to return if ever nearby again👍

Everyone fancies fish & chips so popped in for lunch. Unfortunately the standard of food was very low which we couldn’t understand if it was cooked fresh. Staff are polite & efficient but the quality of food made our lunchtime treat a disaster.

Too expensive, paid around £22 for two oily fish and chips meals and they charge you 30p for two tiny tomato ketchup.

Went here today had fish chips and peas the chips were hard crunchy and greasy the fish was very small and very greasy and lacked flavour the peas was ok overall not good try elsewhere as this place hasn't got very good reviews I should ok checked first.

Gets very busy so prepare to wait. Food isn't bad, but certainly not the best fish and chips you can get.

Came here because they fry in Veg Oil - crispiest, fluffiest chips I’ve ever had and the £2.90 portion was enough for me and my daughter to share 10/10

I've become a bit of a fish & chips snob, my fish of choice is Haddock with it's better texture and sweetness compared to Cod. The thing that ruins the taste is overcooked fish and undercooked chips... Neither of these issues were experienced here, the fish and chips were freshly cooked to perfection. Located so close to the river, with plenty of benches what better way to enjoy fish and chips sitting watching the river. I highly recommend this place, I haven't tried any other shops in Bakewell so hard to compare but... You can't go too far wrong here. I would definitely visit again when next visiting the peak district.

I had a highly disappointing experience with the chicken burger. To my surprise, the burger consisted solely of a chicken patty between two buns—no condiments, no lettuce, no tomato, nothing but dry bread and meat. When I inquired about the missing ingredients, the staff informed me that I should have requested condiments when ordering. However, the employee at the till made no effort to ask about any preferences, nor was there any indication that basic condiments were not included by default. To make matters worse, when I tried to order sauces afterward, I was told that it was impossible because the system had already shut down. This lack of transparency and poor customer service is unacceptable. It’s disappointing that despite the restaurant's popular location, the quality of the food and the attention to customer needs are severely lacking. This experience has left me questioning whether convenience is the only thing keeping this place afloat.

Called in with the missus, for chips sausage fish cake and curry sauce, dont take kindly to being laughed at in chinese to start but myself and the little lady have had stomach ache and infrequent toilet visits for 2 days, this was the only culprit as we had not eaten before this. The food seemed ok on eating but obviously it wasnt. In future will go elsewhere.

Massive dive in quality and portion size over the past year and a massive increase in price. 4x fish cake and chips came to £23. Chips incredibly greasy and some weren’t even cooked.

The service was very quick, that's the good part, the chips were re heated from god knows when, and we're dry and hard, the steak pie pastry was soggy, fish cake was described as light and fluffy, but was anything but, peas were fine, all in all a waste of money.. Try a different chippy

I ordered a portion of chips, which look like french fries , they were burnt too, Battered sausage was very crispy , The peas were like bullets. I agree with the previous poster, I think the chips are re-heats from yesterday. Most of them went in the bin. A waste of money.

Nothing traditional here,just burnt stale food. Chips were stale greasy and obviously leftovers from the day before, the fish smelt and tasted old and very greasy. Mushy peas like bullets and the gravy like p##s water.

We ate fish chips x 2 peas curry sauce sausage £24 ( fish in separate trays chips separate & extras in tubs ) We really enjoyed these - crispy light batter, succulent fish , quality curry sauce and peas & absolutely perfect chippy chips light and fluffy inside We really enjoyed our meal

Wow.... Cheaper fish and chips can be found in central Manchester and better quality too. Not the best portion of take out food I've eaten and for that price I was quite disappointed; this has always been my favourite go to chippie on a day out walking around Bakewell but maybe not anymore.

Disgusting. A large chips was 16 chips. Yes, you could literally count them. The mini fish was about 4 inches long and the battered sausage was two and a half inches long. You do NOT get the food on display. They pack it in the back and you don’t see till you get home. You only get the proper food if it’s ordered ‘open’. The restaurant is filthy and we watched staff refill the curry sauce from a jug without changing/cleaning the tray.

The worst fish & chips I’ve ever had. Chewy , fish rubbery and dry. Tasteless and greasy. Pricey and top it off , I’ve had upset stomach and have felt quite poorly. Not a good experience

Chips was dry and lots of bits, fish was dry with no taste, peas had no taste and watered down. The only thing I had eaten that day and finished with bad upset stomach (food poisoning) to expensive too for a small portion.

Ordered sausage and chips, the chips were covered in grease, and tasted reheated.The sausage was soft and mushy.

I decided to come here and try out the local chippy, with mixed reviews. I entered and was greeted with a smile, I asked if they did Yorkshire fishcakes and by my surprise they did, however, the scallops was a little undercooked and the fish was quite chewy and crunchy, after finding a bone, it must have been the tail of the fish. Bit was still tasty. I enjoyed the large portion of chips. However, was quite pricey, for chips and a fishcake butty, just under 8 pounds. I definitely would give them another chance.

Stumbled across this place as another one was closed and what I find! 10 out of 10! It was as good as what you get on the coast. We travel up and down the country seeking out great fish n chips and this is one of the best. And we've had a lot of fish n chips... Rick Stein's restaurant should take note.

This chippie definitely lived up to its name. Good portions, not too oily, the food is cooked in fresh oil, friendly service and fair prices.

I'm a veggie, not even a vegan, just veggie. Fish/meat, not for me. All this place can offer is chips and peas. Many other places now realise the age we live in and offer, veggie sausage, or burgers, even battered halloumi! This place doesn't even have cheese pies or potato scallops. Brainless. There may only be a single veggie in a family but they will simply go elsewhere if there is no veggie options. What year are we living in?

The fish and chips are poor and expensive. Greasy, with too much broken up batter. Some chips ok, but over half were brittle. For £ 10.50, best avoid

I went on friday 29th sept Got served by a thai woman who kept getting shouted at by a young girl to check orders ...i got 2 small chips and 2 bread rolls and i have only today seen on my banking app that i was charged £9.60 instead of what it was meant to be around £6 . .what a rip off we wont recommend to anyone else and wont go again ..stay well away 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬..

I bought fish and chips from here. Good sized cod but 80% batter. When I eventually located a small portion of fish it was bone dry. The worst chippy I’ve ever been to. Avoid like the plague.

We order small cod and chips. The chips were very nice and the fish batter was crispy. We really enjoyed it and would recommend.

We visited on Sunday 6th August, ordered 2 lots of Fish, Chips and Peas, they had to be the worst i have ever had, swimming in grease and horrible. The staff were not caring about anything as long as you paid your £23. Yes £23 for 2 takeaway fish, chips and peas. Only ate half and the rest went in the bin, done nothing but vomit since i got home. Obviously will never ever use again.

Probably the worst sausage and chips I’ve had. Reheated chips and black. Sausage tasteless and small than usual and batter falling off. Over priced rubbish. Smile being in hospitality wouldn’t hurt! Shame could be great if they tried harder and cared.

Although the staff were friendly and the prices are not unusual for a tourist town, the portion of chips I had weren't cooked properly, and the potatoes were obviously very cheap and not prepared with any care, as most were blackened and full of eyes. Won't be going there, and plenty of alternatives.

Called in on Bank Holiday Monday, the staff were very efficient serving our order which was 2 small cod with chips and another portion of chips & 3 cans of pop. The batter on the fish is probably one of the best batters we’ve ever had it was lovely and crispy no sogginess at all, the chips were nice too and well cooked and not greasy at all. So it’s a thumbs up from us 👍.

The portions were good with the haddock being crisp and a nice size. Was good and would come again.

Excellent quality food. Note portions are large so you may want to consider smaller size. Freshly cooked so very hot. The batter is golden and crispy. Good value

Just been and had chips to eat with our pies and what kind of chip shop serve up catering chips dry hard and taste like cardboard,didn't eat any of it ,went to put them in the bin on the car park and obviously not the only ones as bin was half full of fish and chips complete waste of money ,never again

Payment made by card which staff stated had not authorised; asked to pay again with pin number. When checking with my bank I found I had been charged twice for the same meal. Staff were unhelpful and had no idea how to refund my additional payment. Requested the manager contact me - still waiting!

My partner ordered whilst I looked after the dog. All seem well as we decided to walk and eat them further down stream on the river beyond the other side of the bridge. Unfortunately the chips were hardly cooked and were only just edible which is a first for me from a chippy. The fish was done very nice and had a good crispy batter but sadly it’s not good enough to get the chips wrong. Luckily the local trout seemed to enjoy the odd hard potato.

Order was wrong for me and the 2 customers before us it seemed - not listening to what was asked for, or else not reading correctly and as a result there wasn't any left for what I actually wanted. Mushy peas not good at all - avoid.

Food was okay but staff were absolutely useless. Took the order down wrong and had to ask me 3 times if I wanted it wrapped or open. Every time I said wrapped and then they presented them open. All the staff looked very young and although they had come from a party and were still under the influence. Wouldn’t visit again

I’ve been eating at this chippy roughly twice a month ever since I returned from living in Sweden two years ago, the food was always well cooked pleasantly served and reasonable value. The last three experiences have been less than satisfactory not sure if it’s changed hands but the staff have certainly changed a lot recently, the food has been lack lustre and the new ridiculously small portion sizes have now become nothing less than farcical. Sadly I shall now vote with my feet and try to find a better local fish and chip shop to satisfy my tastes.

Fish was good but organisation and service at the shop is terrible. Portion sizes not great either, full cod serving was same as the mini cod and the mini cod was not a generous seve.

Popped in yesterday with our children for a sneaky tray of chips as everyone else in Bakewell had chips..... Glad we did, we were greeted by a lovely lovely who could not have been anymore helpful! He made a fuss of our children and served us wonderfully fresh food, the chips were beautiful and I was hoping for a bite of my Sons's fishfingers......Not a chance! Very friendly staff who provided a great fish supper to two very hungry walkers. Some sausage also provided for one small hungry dog! Will be back on my next trip to Bakewell.

Brilliant food but the man on the front was swearing and being inappropriate after he spilt my chips. Luckily the women working there saved the situation by being lovely and accommodating. I do feel very sorry for the girls who have to work with him though!

The chips we had were hard and dry. There were loads of black ones that were inedible. This is not the first time either. 5 weeks ago when we visited they were exactly the same. I will definitely not be using this shop again.

Just 1 star for the battered haddock and 2 mini-cod... today we bought 3 x fish and chips and without exaggeration they were the worst chips we've tasted for a long time, they had been reheated so many times they were uneatable... dry, hard, dark and the appearance of wood. My partner took her's back and he couldn't see anything wrong with them, I threw mine in the bin, my cousin with us, on holiday from the USA threw hers in the bin too... we returned to this establishment today after enjoying a previous visit, never again!!.... the food today was awful.

The scampi was nice but standard, the chips were VERY good and pretty good value at £2.45 for large with scraps.

Absolutely fantastic Fish and Chips. Our Local for years now. We have a Bakewell event every year and this is the local for all friends. The service, the food, the portion and the prices are faultless. Easily accessible - next door to coop and opposite public toilets and the public car park. Thee perfect location. BEWARE!!! This place is a scam, ran by rude patronising staff who over charge. Chips, mushy peas and fish cake supposed to cost £5.75 instead was charged £7.50 when we argued with the staff he refused he was wrong despite his maths being horrific. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS. The food wasn’t great either
