This place was a bit strange despite its lovely location. The food and coffee were fine, but it was served in cardboard takeaway containers even though we were dining in. The staff were nice but distracted by laughing and chatting with each other. We had to wait at the register for our food, carry it upstairs, get our own cutlery, and clear our table into the bins provided, which made it feel like a fast-food place rather than a café.

Had the worst tea and coffee here ever. It looks really nice from the outside and we sat outside on a sunny Saturday morning. The tea and coffee arrived in very dirty plastic chewed up beakers and was probably the worst tea I’ve ever tasted it was really bitter and just tasted of tannin, my partner reported the same problem with his coffee. We didn’t drink it and went elsewhere so glad we didn’t order food. The staff were really pleasant though, but whoever the owner is needs to read these reviews and sort out the cleanliness and quality issues.

A beautiful gem in the centre of Winchester. Set in a 16th century building which has retained original features like a Tudor fireplace, decor and panelling. The atmosphere is charming and the staff (Grace and co) are welcoming and helpful. Truly a n historic experience.

This place could be an absolute gem, but is let down by poor management. The pro's: Great location, lovely building, delicious coffee and homemade cakes. The con's: Inexperienced / mismanaged staff leading to grubby tables and loos, lack of customer service and a general shambolic impression. We ordered coffee and cake and decided to sit upstairs. All the tables had debris and crumbs over them, but we chose one by the window, and asked our waiter to clear it when he brought our drinks (which he brought without a tray, just a mug in each hand - which was odd and potentially unhygienic given that the mugs are handle-less beakers). He obliged by taking the stuff that he could carry in his hands, and said he would be back for the rest. Next time we saw him he was carrying a tray of tea to another table, which he proceeded to drop all over the floor and splashed a lot on another customer's expensive-looking wool coat. When she asked, he gave her a couple of tissues, and used a couple more to dab at the floor. He apologised profusely, but I think more should have been done as the coat was really wet. She then had to bundle the coat up as the floor was still wet and so she couldn't hang it on her chair as it would have trailed in. The waiter never returned to clear or wipe our table, so we had our drink and cake surrounded by other people's rubbish. When we left there were other staff hanging around the serving counter, despite there being no further customers at that time, so I'm not sure why the upstairs was such a mess. I'm not blaming them, they were lovely, just young and inexperienced, and the lad obviously had no idea how to deal with the spillage situation. With better onsite management and training this place could be fantastic, fingers crossed they get around to it.

We sat inside upstairs in this beautiful historical building. I was surprised we were served our snack in a box and our tea a plastic type material mug. Why not in/on a ceramic teacup and plate? It let’s this place down cos it’s a special place and not cheap.

This is a lovely bakery, in a very historical building. We had a delicious hot chocolate, and on our last day in Winchester went back to buy an artisan bread to take home. Delicious food and a gem to visit.

Fatty, sloppy, undercooked, microwave-reheated bacon in a 'bap', served by bored students who only perked up as we were finishing and leaving (presumably in the hope of a tip).

After strolling up and down the high street looking for a place to get a late lunch no where really appealed to me until i stumbled over this little gem tucked away, you would walk right past it and not know it was there. My BLT and coffee was perfect, along with pastry latter. the team were welcoming and service was good. Ive already said to colleagues that next time we are in Winchester we must go back.

I heard the bakery was expensive, but I wasn't prepared for how expensive. I ended up having a sausage roll as this was cheaper than a £7.99 sandwich! The sausage roll wasn't even that nice and had an odd taste to it. The coffee was hot, but I wasn't offered sugar and it was served in a paper cup. I'm not sure if this is the norm, but it's not very environmentally friendly and for the price I would expect a mug. I won't be going there again.

Popped in for coffee and cake today, explained to the girl which cakes we wanted, it took three goes before she got it right, coffee came in dirty looking handless mugs about 10 minutes later, terrible service and not great coffee.

We were looking for a nice local bakery to stop and have a coffee and sandwich while visiting Winchester. We chose 'Winchester Bakery' as we were interested in supporting a local, independent business. The 4 members of staff were more interested in discussing how busy their day had been between themselves than in serving us. The prices were extortionate... we are from London, and the prices exceeded London prices! The coffee was actually very nice, but the two ciabatta vegan rolls we ordered at £7 each to share, had hardly any filling inside, and tasted the exactly the same as each other, even though they were 'different'. Very poor quality sandwiches, we will not go back there.

At the end of the day - but still some time before they were scheduled to close - we visited the WInchester Bakery for a coffee. Prices were on the high side, and (when they arrived), some of the drinks were definitely cool. More importantly though, the customer service was poor. Between us, we placed three orders to cover the seven people requiring drinks. When brought out, only six drinks arrived. When challenged, the waiter was rather brusque, but did go back inside to check their till receipts. Eventually he appeared with the missing drink, but rather than apologise for the mistake, all we got was, "That's all that was ordered. It's the last one on the ticket, so that's it" (... all this noted on my phone at the time). Frankly, we were made to feel that our presence was an inconvenience, despite the fact that we were contributing to his wages. Very poor show; will not be returning.

Had to queue to get in the door so thought it must be good. It was very disappointing! The Coffee and Bakewell Tart was lovely, but wish we hadn’t bothered with the filled baps as they we terrible, hardly any filling and very dry. At the extortionate price we were charged, I would definitely not recommend going here for lunch.

It’s a cool place for a coffee and a snack, there is the bakery on the ground floor and seating upstairs. They cleverly mixed modern furniture while keeping all the original features of the medieval building, very nice! Staff is friendly and quick in serving. The selection of pastries and cakes is fantastic. The sausage roll makes a hearty meal!

£3.85 for one small sausage roll! For that price I would have expected it to be delivered on a silver platter, surmounted on a velvet and gold braid cushion. It’s arrival heralded by trumpets. No wonder my brother sources his outfits from the charity shops of Winchester. I’ll stick to Greggs and my Savile Row tailor.

We have been staying at the Solent for years and in the past have always loved it. We have not been since lockdown, what a disappointment. It's gone really down hill, everything from the rooms , the staff and especially the food and drinks, awful. Won't be staying again.

We always like this pub for food and that the costs are kept at a decent price. Always give you good size portions too. We have found staff always busy, the thing is you can’t tell if it’s a pub or a restaurant. Which is quite confusing, trying to do both and when you’re queuing you don’t know if it’s for food or just drinks. There is one lady there that is quite rude to people but we didn’t see her this time. But this lady will ruin this pub if she isn’t careful. But we do like the food here!

After months of giving it a go, we have finally given up on this place. The attraction was the spacious stylish venue, imaginative lunch/brunch menu, (some) pleasant if rather harassed staff, dog friendly and a pleasant location on a favourite Winchester riverside walk. Plus we could generally get a table, unlike lovely Greens that gets so busy on a weekend. During the week it’s reserved for tenants of the co-working space and in the early phase there was a lot of confusion about when/if it was open to the public, with inadequate signage and staff unable to communicate the arrangements clearly. After a bit, that got sorted out and it entered a golden age that lasted for a chunk of last year. Some great food (like the warm pear salad, bubble and squeak and wedges of pear cake) and better organisation. The place seemed better organised and the staff seemed less stressed. Alas it has now taken a real dive. Food quality dipped, items served soggy or burnt, shrinkflation apparent in the bakery items, the nice fresh cakes replaced with mass-produced tasting flapjacks. ‘Large’ coffees that would be considered a regular size in most places. Overseen by a supervisor with patronising and officious manner who I saw shouting at a small child who dared venture onto an (unsigned) staircase leading to a private area.. At our last visit, the lunch menu was inexplicably unavailable at 1.30pm - only breakfast items. But we could see lunch dishes being served to a party on a nearby table. An allergy request was completely ignored and when we complained I was first offered a grudging ‘sorry-not-sorry’ by the sour-faced supervisor (sorry but not her fault that the server hadn’t passed on the message). When I said that wasn’t good enough, when you’re dealing with customers’ safety, I was then told off for being rude. So that’s it for us, not going back. Feel sorry for the better servers, it must be a tough place to work.
