Very friendly staff, nice chips and sausage rolls, and a lovely space. My friend booked a table for a party (bit close to the dart boards 😄 ) and we had a lovely time. He very much enjoyed trying all the special beers on tap. I enjoyed the house red!

Not a great experience here for my mum’s birthday unfortunately. Firstly when we came into the pub we were seated in the very dark back corner despite the place being empty and noticed that there was a horrible damp smell. We asked to move to the front of the pub where the smell was a bit better and this was fine. Sadly the pub had little to no atmosphere and despite us mentioning that we were celebrating a birthday when booking, nothing was said or done by staff to mark the occasion. The food was also very disappointing - one of our meals was forgotten and arrived when everyone else had finished (though the waitress did offer a free drink to apologise) and the quality of most of our meals was lacking. Despite their extensive pie menu and all pies being served with mash, there was no gravy available to order at all, the only response being ‘you won’t need it’ (we definitely did for such a dry meal!). One of the pies was supposed to be ‘chicken and spicy sausage’ but it was actually chicken and mushroom and two of our party were left hungry as the seabass was said to be the ‘worst ever tasted’ with hardly any actual fish on the bone and the goats cheese salad was bitter and flavourless. Sadly we skipped extra drinks and desserts and left to try and find somewhere else to continue the birthday celebrations after such a disappointing meal.

We had a pint of Spittlefield bitter and there was something wrong with the pint. I took the pints back and told them the beer tasted of cleaning fluid (there was a chemical 'sweetness/perfume' to it) and I was told (quite surly by the landlady) that the pipes were cleaned yesterday so I must be mistaken. The pipes had been cleaned, but obviously not flushed out thoroughly. We've both been nauseous and sick since (we didn't finish the pints and the sickness started immediately) How a pub can go downhill in less than a year? It was one of my favourite pubs. Not anymore. AVOID

This is a superb gem of a Ale/Cider house, also know as a pub to some people. At least 7 ale pumps, that give you the choice of many different types of great ales (IPA/Best Bitter/Porter etc). There is also at least 6 or 7 different Ciders, a fantastic range of ales / Ciders, that can change in a few days. So if find one you love stay there and drink as much as possible. Also a massive bonus are the 3 Dart boards at the back.

Visit at lunchtime on 1st of March 2024. Just round the corner from Liverpool Street Station but quiet, away from the hustle and bustle. Had not booked but got a table with no problem. Probably busier in the evenings and our table was already booked for 6pm tonight judging by the card on it. I had a club sandwich with fries and my mate had a pie. Both very good with the Speckled Hen on draught. Friendly lady served our food, bar staff also ok but perhaps a bit distant. Did not effect our experience though. Plenty of beers and ciders on draught. Would visit again and likely try the ciders then. So a quiet pub, in a good way from our perspective, with good food and beer. You do not need much else.

The team were great and this is a lovely pub. The menu is a little limited, but the fish & chips were excellent, far better to do a small menu well than an large one indifferently. I partially booked because one review suggested it was quieter, this wasn't the case when we arrived (music and general pub chatter in a 'boomy' space) and our table was right by a speaker. However the team turned the music off at our request, meaning we could at least converse. This was a minor problem and all in all, an excellent pub, highly recommended.

Ive come here a couple of times for two different occasions, when wasn't after office drinks, the other was meeting a friend. On both occasions, the atmosphere suited really well, when meeting with colleagues you want something more vibrant that sets a positive atmosphere, when you're with a friend, you want the place to be perhaps a little quieter, perhaps a corner to get into so you can chat without being drowned out. It's usually very hard to find both but this place managed to provide. The selection of ales is very good and it changes frequently, there is usually a taste for everyone and even there isn't then there is a good variety of bottles. The staff are very casual with a good demeanour and by in large very attentive. Given its proximity to Liverpool Street, Its convenient and makes an excellent starting point before the short walk up to Shoreditch. If you're a tourist in the area, It's definitely one of the more stereotypical British pub experiences you'll find.

Came here for a Sunday lunch catch up with friends. The service was very warm and friendly but the food was a bit of a let down. While the veg was cooked well, the meat (I had beef) was very tough and the Yorkshire was a bit dry. The pigs in blankets were awfully salty too so I could barely eat them. The atmosphere was also somewhat ruined by a child playing Christmas songs on the piano terribly.

He understood my mood (not great) as soon as I walked in and made me feel so welcome. He chose lots of ciders for me and took the time on a busy night to chat in between serving people. To be honest I’d go back just for him, but the real ciders will get me back too. Well done to all involved. Not many pubs like this near a mainline station.

Pub has reopened following refurbishment and whilst there are improvements it’s a shame booths have been removed and replaced with a long bench and a row of tables not so pleasant but that’s personal taste having been here frequently over the years. However my choice of fish and chips came up as batter with no fish when I asked for a replacement was advised to have something else as all fish was the same therefore a shame kitchen was sending it out in first place so went for side dishes scotch egg and Caesar salad egg ok salad not so came up with dressing and anchovies and was informed this was the new way menu did not show this and frankly it was unpleasant also to note was that the food portions where much smaller than prior to refurbished decor. I was offered a free drink and others too in place of refunding money due to me having a cheaper meal so staff did try to make amends but all in all not great much better pubs close by in terms of interior and food.
