A true oasis, hidden away just off the High Street. Whilst there was 7 of us, we took a table for 8, leaving us with more than enough food for even the hungrest of people. From the very first dish, to the last scrapings of the pavlova, everything was perfect. Whilst the food was exceptional (worthy of many awards), it was the staff who made our experience so special. Seeing the kitchen flat-out, serving EVERY table at the same time, to the two waiting staff, attentive and always smiling. We will be back.

We’d read in The Times that Wild Artichokes was ‘the best meal you’ll have this side of Bristol’. And they were right! The ‘June Feast Night’ was a great experience. They’ve clearly thought how to cut out waste and to deliver fantastic food and amazing value and ambience. Everyone arrives 6 to 6.30 and you’re all served from 7.00. We had 6 starters I think … to share … one after the other …no rush!, Then a second course … something like a lasagne, but not. Delicious! And a main course and then three desserts. Great flavours. No choice of menu. You all eat the same. All so, so tasty. Staff were brilliant. You can see the kitchen. All terrific. As The Times said, don’t worry about the industrial estate, once inside, it’s brilliant. Well done all of you!

On arrival the friendly team direct you to tables with bench seats each table for 8 and you will likely be sat with strangers who will likely become friends over the evening. If you have allergies you should advise the team on booking as the food is a set series of courses made from fresh local ingredients. All superb. Make sure you are hungry and do not over indulge on the early courses as there are many more to come. A great night out.

This is an amazing little gem that has a growing air of celebrity attached to it - Jane Baxter, the chef patron has written cookbooks on the health benefits of food relating to the menopause that has gained a significant following, and support from Davina. waiting list but worth the wait. An informal setting where you may find yourself sitting with other guests, and presented with an amazing menu that you don't choose from - you eat it all! To be honest, it's a meal of three parts - some excellent and interesting starters that smack of quality and expert cooking and which almost fill you up. Then a large main course, excellently cooked, but which have you loosening your trousers if you taste the (in our case) two meat and two vegetable dishes, followed by 3 desserts. I am not a foodie as such and my perspective is as an interested person who has to eat. The starters were outstanding, the mains great, and the puddings delicious, but the enjoyment of multiple, small and sophisticated dishes was overwhelmed when the mains and dessert arrived. I was astonished at the outstanding value and my preference would have been for 14 smaller dishes at twice the price (rather than the 14 we had). I would have been able to walk away in comfort, appreciated the excellence, and still felt I had experienced a rare and exceptional evening.

After going through a very unpromising industrial estate, this excellent restaurant was most unexpected. The decor is intentionally spartan and basic, but even this has been carefully considered. They have a tasting menu, but can easily accommodate vegetarians or vegans. Our table chose the vegetarian set: 7 starters, a pasta course, 4 mains and three desserts. The wine list was reasonably priced with a fair range. Service was by people who really knew their menu, and the chefs were so close to the diners that one could easily ask what was in what. Each course was generous enough and we could not have eaten any more if it would have been offered. Stand out courses were cheese-filled arancini, torn lasagna with a spicy sauce and a pistachio cake. Booking is essential, particularly if they will need to prepare food to your requirements.

The food was fabulous, completely concurring with all the other reviews, such a wide range of flavours, and Jane is definitely a feeder! Also the service was faultless, we never had to ask for a top up of water on the table or flagging anyone down for another drink, the front of house team were an absolute delight!

My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at Wild Artichokes last night. We started off with a local beer and an Amalfi spritz before being bombarded by dish after dish of delicious food including squid, venison, rabbit, arancini, pear tart, chocolate pudding & pavlova. It's a great way to eat (unless you're terribly unsociable). The atmosphere is relaxed but incredibly professional and the passion for food is evident in the staff. A few reviews have mentioned food waste being an issue which just isn't true. If you put together the leftovers from 8 individual diners it would amount to more than the shared tables at WA. If you want a fun night out with exceptional food & service, look no further.

You get everything sent out from the menu on tasting platters portioned for the whole table. There is more than enough of everything for everyone. We couldn’t want for anything. Food is delicious European Italian Mediterranean cuisine using top quality local ingredients. You share a big table with other people, so be warned. You all share the platters which we easily got used to after the first couple of dishes. Definitely going back, it’s a great experience and the food ain’t half bad either …. Totally delicous 😋

Wild Artichokes catered our wedding. And it was perfect! We had a wonderful selection of canapés, a banquet/sharing main meal with lots of different sides and four delicious puddings. It wasn’t ‘normal’ wedding food, but fine dining served in a casual and cool way. All our guests (family and friends) said it was the best food they’d ever been served at a wedding, and my husband and I agree! They also cooked up lots of different pasties and sausage rolls for the evening. The quantity was very generous and so there was plenty for the other staff to have and left over for people to take home.In the lead up to the wedding they were so helpful, even helping us with the timings and layout of the day. Very experienced, professional, and easy to chat through ideas with. We would recommend Wild Artichokes without question! We had an Indonesian Curry which was first class delicate and subtle flavours, good portion size nicely presented. How it works at the moment. Friday night is curry night. On Tuesday evening the menu for Friday appears. There was a choice of meat or vegetarian. You place and pay for your order by Wednesday for collection between 6 and 7 pm.Good communication with several follow-up emails including good directions to the out of the way premises. We parked in the nearby log stay car park (50p for half hour) and made the 2 or 3 minute walk to the premises.Directions emphasise there is no parking even to pick up the take away at the restaurant, good idea to follow this advice. The food is served from a counter near the front entrance and is packed in suitable containers with hot and cold dishes separate. Even though it was in styrofoam container the starter was attractively presented. There are of course cheaper take-aways but for me quality comes first and I am looking forward to becoming a regular.

We booked the Indian feast evening having enjoyed Jane Baxter's style of cooking at the Dartmouth Food Festival, this year; we were not disappointed! We were a party of 4 and, as other reviewers have said, the tables are set for 8 - as it turned out we had the table to ourselves as a result of a 'no show'. The atmosphere was lively but not so noisy that we couldn't hear ourselves talk as we watched Jane and her helper (s) beaver away in the kitchen. The menu was written up on a large banner on the wall and as Sam presented us with each dish ( of which, I think there were 17) she explained what was what and was very happy to answer any questions. The food was beautifully cooked and all the flavours well balanced; none of the dishes were so over spiced that you couldn't feel your tongue and nothing was swimming in ghee as so often happens with Indian style food. The food was served as sharing plates and there was more than enough to satisfy even the biggest appetite and more than represented value for money. We will be back; thankyou Jane and Sam.

Only a month in South Hams and already we are getting blase about the impressive eateries here. The food at Wild Artichoke puts it at the top of that proliferating pecking order: it is creatively varied and packed with colour and flavour, a sort of hyperbolic meze. The inspiration is mostly mediterranean but relies on no one identifiable origin and there are a few oriental twists to keep you guessing. The highlights were many: the fluffy focaccia, the crab omellette, the salt cod ravioli ( surprisingly suble) and the fish bourride, a heady confection of juicy fish, a tarragon-rich sauce and mashed potato. Heavenly. For those who worry about the humungous helpings generating obscene amounts of waste there were nuggets of deep-fried lasagne - meltingly intense mouthfuls encased in crispy shells- demonstrating how imaginatively and sublimely dishes can be recycled. The sheer volume of dishes can threaten to bewilder after a while, particulaly if you commit the obvious mistake of pigging on the early stuff. Next time we have viwed to pick daintily at the first ten dishes, knowing that the best may yet be to come. That might even leave room to enjoy the three delectable puddings which we could only pick at since by then all we wanted to do was to recline, sleep and digest, like a large snake which had somehow swallowed a horse. No review would be complete without mention of the communal tables and benches you share with lucky strangers. If this horrifies you because you just want to stare at your phone or into your partner’s eyes all night, then go elsewhere. Alternatively, you can make merry and new friends, as we did. The celebrating group of five ladies who shared our table was huge fun, chatty, charming, outgoing, Invaluably Knowledgeable about the area, occasionally ourageous and remarkably generous with their champagne. Conversation gradually degenerated into banter which reached cacophany by 10 pm. As they buckled up to continue celebrating elsewhere, our reserves of stamina just about got us safely home. Paying when you book, means all you need at the end is cash for corkage and a tip for the excellent service. Tables are much sought after and the dining nights few, so book well ahead and prepare to be stuffed and sociable.

....well, we were all very excited, family meal, special occasion, not been before. Will only go back if a) we can somehow have a table to ourselves, b) we don’t eat for a week beforehand. So, the positives...loads of food, great atmosphere. The negatives. We shared our table with complete strangers, what’s that all about? They were nice people but I wasn’t out for dinner with them. No indication of this on the website. Half of us sat back to back with another table. This isn’t Hogwarts and we’re not children, and this isn’t a refectory, it’s advertised as a restaurant. Bad. As others have said the seating is appalling. Uncomfortable bench’s, and it take 3 hours to get through all the food. Again, we’re not children. The food. You’d think this would be a positive, and it’s not the taste or flavour but the volume. There were 7 starters (yes seven) and 6 main courses (yes six)....and 3 puddings. And it’s much easier to say “well don’t eat them all fatty” but the whole point is to try everything. They say ‘you eat what we cook’ and I like that idea, but as more and more food was brought out, more was left, and discarded. People simply didn’t have room. A criminal waste. The star of the mains was brought out last, and many people simply had no room left. 90% left untouched. The venue get very hot and sweaty, and the din created by 30+ dinners is amplified by the parred back industrial fixtures and fittings, all echoey and clattery.Sadly (for this review) I was very relieved to leave, and to get out into the relative quiet and calm and slight drizzle. So if none of the above bothers you, and I’m sure there are many of you thinking ‘so what’ then go, you’ll have a blast. Try to make up an 8, then you’ll have the table to yourselves, oh and finally it’s BYO, so take your own booze, they charge a corkage.NB: if this review has been interesting and or helpful please like or thumbs up

Our little group was seated with a larger family get together - we all mucked in - as if we were attending the wedding of a long lost distant relative! Stand out dishes included braised corn, duck ragu with the silkiest of pasta and cherry clafoutis. Book early and BYO!

This was so good that I'm planning to move in there permanently. Superb cooking, dish after dish of beautifully comprised ingredients and a charming host. Forgot to take our own alcohol, but this was easily remedied from the local shop. Full marks. Proper cooking.

We have been planning to go here for about a year. Booked to go with friends down from London in May so thought we better do a quick road test.

Approach with caution through the potholes outside but enter into a food paradise. For, stripped of its outdoor location, this is a masterclass of food...and plenty of it. Sure (like increasing locations) its back to school-like canteen rows of tables and bench seats but the range of food presented and its preparation is quite remarkable even for those who lack adventure in eating. For first-timers the whisper around as coats are gathered is: : I'll certainly be back" as they steal away with a bag of food they couldn't complete, to enjoy later.

This establishment is in an unremarkable setting in the centre of a small industrial estate in the centre of the town. Once you have found it then you will not forget it! Easy to park outside this small, converted warehouse. A very warm welcome to a delightful atmosphere. Several tables with bench seating for 6 x 8 diners. No menu as such - you are presented with food of the day. Be warned - the food keeps coming. Dishes of various and numerous starters are brought to the table, at stages, and you self serve. Take it easy - don't rush. A brief pause and then dishes, bowls & platters of main courses - fish, meats, pasta, salads all with wonderful flavours. If you are still able, then prepare for three large desserts. Just stunning! Take your own wind for a small corkage charge.

Great evening. Huge quantity of very tasty and well prepared food to share around the trestle type tables. Excellent friendly efficient staff. BYO with a £5 corkage on wine. Veggie option ( booked in advance) enough to feed two or three but I was the only veggie. Open kitchen so could see chef freshly preparing the various dishes, pasta salads , Meats etc. Adequate parking, very clean everywhere including the loos. What’s not to like . Worth the 3 hour journey to get there. Big thank you.

Absolutely loved our visit to this restaurant. A wonderful sounding menu was delivered, course by course, to communal tables. No choices involved and many vegetarian dishes. The whole lot came! You take your own wine and the restaurant is not open every day. The talented Jane Baxter (ex Riverford) presides, together with her charming and incredibly efficient and quick team. All very professional and slick and totally delicious. A lot of food, so don't have lunch the day you go though. The kitchen is open plan is all is visible to see, and the decoration of the room is charming. Slightly tricky to find, but well worth it and will definitely go back soon.

Bit hard to find but worth it. Fabulous communal dining experience. Tight squeeze, noisy and fun (and I'm an introvert). The plates of food just kept coming. Our twelve year old tried and enjoyed a bunch of things she would normally baulk at. We enjoyed the food and the informality. Pompous silver service it ain't. Would want these guys to cook for any big do I was organising. Some people have complained about lack of personal space and I guess your experience will be somewhat shaped by who you sit near but if that's likely to be an issue for you perhaps eat somewhere a bit more conventional?

Read about WA and booked as we were on holiday in the area. Interesting food but too many different dishes with different flavours. The tuna was the key dish, but a bit bland and not sufficiently seared, so rather limp.lovely atmosphere where you positively have to chat around your table. Overall, disappointed as it was bigged up whereas loads of local places by the sea here are every bit as good.

Not really designed for tall or large people as the seating arrangement is awful. The tables are basically pub garden benches and when sat in the middle section your back is constantly touching the person sat behind you, I am six foot two and struggled to sit comfortably. Secondly it was sweltering, it was only 15 degrees or so out side but the temperature in the small restaurant was uncomfortably warm for most. Ok moving forward from the above the food was excellent with amazing flavours and I can see how it can be very social as you sit with strangers in a Wagamama restaurant style.

Had dinner here with my partner. It’s a real locals pub but with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The steak and kidney pudding and lamb shank were both really tasty and very reasonable in price.
