Absolutely fabulous dinner at this gem of a place! Richard and the team were wonderful hosts. The food was beautifully presented and it tasted delicious. We've been passing this place in the car for years and years and we're so pleased that we eventually booked up! We will definitely be back!

10 of us ate last night - 7 adults and 3 children. The whole experience felt really personalised and special. Richard's communication was excellent from booking through to the night and followup. The food itself was exquisite. I had been told this was one of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Devon and I have to see I agree. Every one of us found something to love on the menu and the attention to detail was excellent. A would thoroughly recommend Plantation House Restaurant.

A treat as we had missed out on Valentines Day ! Very welcoming and efficient staff. We had seats by a lovely open fire in the bar and helpfully offered glasses of water as we did not wish to drink before our meal. The food was innocative, delicious and well presented with an amuse bouche of soup to start. Half bottles of wine available which was such a good idea as then we could each have the wine of our choice. A pot of good coffee was served by the fire after dinner - so much nicer and more relaxed than at the table. Also, courses of the menu not taken are allowed for in the eventual price. Very helpful for smaller appetites.Altogether a most peaceful and enjoyable visit, recommended.

My wife and I recently spent 3 nights at The Plantation House Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The welcome from Richard and his staff was was top notch and the level of service from everybody was exemplary. The location in the South Hams countryside is quiet and peaceful but still ideal for touring the area with its lovely harbour towns, Dartmoor, Plymouth etc. Our room was comfortable with good views, a very nice bathroom and a few extra creature comforts like a fruit basket and bottled water. (The room was on the top floor and next time we'll try to get a room on the first floor - the extra flight of stairs was a minor annoyance for us.) The breakfasts are very nice although we'd like to have been able to opt for scrambled eggs or omelette and there was no continental option for those who do not want a cooked breakfast. We had dinner in the restaurant on two of the three nights and the food was outstanding. Service was excellent.A few minor niggles: the TV in our room was on a very low table that was not suitable for comfortable viewing and almost useless for watching while in bed; the mattress was too soft for us but I suppose that's a very personal preference; the dinner menu did not change while we were there so that would be an issue for stays of more than a few days if eating in every night. However, it has to be said that the food was really very good.We very much enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel and the restaurant without hesitation.

This is the third time spent at the Plantation House restaurant in Ermington. The previous occasions were a romantic meal for two and a family celebration with ten. Tonight's meal was for relatives who haven't yet experienced the cuisine and ambiance the Plantation House has to offer. It was like watching someone open the best Christmas present ever. To see their faces when they sat down to an aperitif, peruse the menu and choose a favourite wine was priceless. The confirmation of exquisite dishes and accompanying wines brought immense pleasure and the knowledge that there will now be two more regulars to share our secret restaurant was very special. Richard, the owner & chef, once again produced a delightful menu. The service was polite and thoughtful and to be commended. The Plantation House restaurant never fails to impress, whether it be small or large family celebrations or intimate evenings out. We stayed here a couple of weekends ago. This is described as a restaurant with rooms. That does a disservice to the quality of the hotel element. However, regarding the restaurant, I was impressed by the quality of the cuisine, the rolling variation from night to night (which allows for variety on offer for those like us, staying in the hotel), and the relatively modest cost. It reminded me so much of those quality restaurants that are widespread in France, who pride themselves on really decent cuisine at reasonable prices. Nothing here would be shamed by comparison, and indeed, would surpass such French competition. The cooking was really imaginative and well executed. The wine list was interesting and comprehensive, also with House wines on offer at sensible prices. We settled on a Chateau Musar from Lebanon on the first night and a Fleurie the second. Great choice of 'digestifs' in the lounge afterwards with a particularly interesting and varied collection of single malt whiskies.A truly great place; either as restaurant alone or as also somewhere to stay too.

This is probably the best and most sophisticated food restaurant in the area. What you used to find everywhere in France - an owner chef who cooks a restricted (but varied) menu from scratch and does it exceptionally well. Every dish is a different taste and they are all lovely, from the pre dinner snacks through the chef's treat to the cheese and coffee. The wine list is extensive and reasonably priced and they have a wide range of single malts. The three main courses, wine and pre dinner drinks will set you back £55-60 pp.What the place lacks is atmosphere. There were very few people there when we dined in January, three other men to be precise and you could hear a pin drop. You feel you should wear a jacket at dinner, so the atmosphere is that of a small hotel which I suppose it is. One of the reasons for going out is for a jolly happy atmosphere and this was a bit austere. We have eaten there in the summer, however, and their delightful terrace and the sun does brighten things.

My wife and I went to the Plantation House for supper to celebrate her birthday. It was an immaculate evening, very intimate restaurant with only 5/6 tables and friendly staff. We started in the sitting room with a glass of Prosecco and were then taken to the next door dining room, eating there before having tea in the sitting room afterwards. Throughout the evening, the staff were very attentive but also unhurried leaving us to enjoy our food. Afterwards the chef, Richard, asked us whether we had a nice evening, which we felt was a nice touch as he seemed genuinely interested to know whether we'd enjoyed the food. We'll definitely be back for another special occasion in the future. Cost, including a glass of Prosecco each, a cup of tea, full meal, half a bottle of wine between us and sensible tip came to about £65/each, which seemed perfectly reasonable for what we had. Which comes on to another good thing - they sold several wines by the half bottle which I have not seen in many restaurants but was perfect for us.

If you are in the area then a meal at the Plantation House is a real treat. We have been many times and have taken many friends and visitors and we have never been disappointed. The food is exceptional and not expensive for what it is, although it is not a pub meal so be prepared to be spending a bit more than that. The only downside I can find is that occasionally, out of season, it can be very quiet there which makes it a little awkward if there are just 2 of you in the party. My solution to that is we always take a couple of friends (or a party of a 12 or more, as we did recently and they gave us our own private dining room). If you live locally and have never been then treat yourselves to some of the best food in Devon.

This was our 3rd or 4th visit to Plantation House, as we have family who live in the area - it's one of those resturants that we reserve for special occasions, birthdays etc.First things first, let's start with the postives:- good location in the Devon countryside- the whole building has a boutique style feel to it- the menu offers reasonable choice, particularly of locally sourced produce- the wine list is good & moderately priced for a restaurant of this type- we all had varied dishes and everyone was happy with their choicesThere were a few negatives however:- ambience - it was WAY too quite in there. It's virtually impossible to have a conversation without your neighbours on the next table overhearing every world- the front-of-house member of staff (a gentleman whose name we didn't catch) was severely lacking in enthusiasm/charisma, we didn't feel warmly welcomed at all. This contrasted with the female members of staff who were all engaging- when we moved from the restaurant into the 'lounge' area after dinner, the only empty table was still covered in tea/coffee cups from the previous guests, it was nearly 10 minutes before these were cleared. For a restaurant where you are paying £50 - £60 per head for dinner/drinks this is disappointingIf they injected some personality into the front-of-house, injected a little bit more atmosphere and addressed the other service issues, this would have been a 'very good' or even 'excellent'. Hopefully next time will see an improvement.

Pre dinner drinks in a small sitting area with some rather over flavoured nuts and biscuit and a rather overpowering bar area did not set us off to the best start. Menu £35 for 3 courses looked interesting, and the welcome by the chef and service were attentive and slick. Home made bread delicious, but would be nice if they left the basket on the table. The starters (guinea fowl salad, pasta or salmon) tasty, but a bit meagre. Ditto the main course - fish, lamb or duck - nicely prepared, tasty but lacked sufficient vegetables or sauce/ jus or whatever one calls it these days to make one feel one had a chance to savour a plateful. All 4 of us felt something was missing, and concluded part of this may have been due to the setting. It's a small and rather sparse dining room where conversations are easily overheard. The cane bottom chairs were not comfortable (would have been nice with cushions) and it felt neither warm nor inviting. That, plus the slightly undersized portions did not leave one feel one had any reason to linger. The puddings were probably the best part, but the option to follow of coffee and chef nibbles for a further £4 per head was over the top so we passed on this. Just the offering a free cafetiere would have been nice and would have left one feeling one could relax at the end of a meal and chat. Probably warrants a good, not very good, but not value for money overall.

A lovely small hotel in a particularly attractive part of Devon. Relaxed and homely atmosphere with clean, tastefully decorated rooms and lots of nice touches to make you feel pampered. For me the best bit was breakfast. Forget the tinned grapefruit segments here. As you enter the well appointed breakfast room you are confronted by an individually prepared, lovely plate of fresh fruit and yoghurt. Plenty of breads and jams and toast. But do try the cooked. Delicious scrambled eggs and home cured salmon. Or if you can manage it the Devon full monty. As you sit looking out over the beautiful Erm Valley you will see the very free range chickens wandering in the garden that provided the eggs on your plate. Just first class.

The fish dishes were perfect. the wine list very good. This is a wonderful gourmet dining experence, not to be missed. good food, well priced, I would love to go back!

We booked Plantation House after looking through sites like Mr & Mrs Smith... looking for personal service and quality. This place really fits the bill. Richard (owner and chef extraordinaire) ws brilliant. He made us feel very welcome and provided a place to really relax and enjoy. The hotel is going through modernisation, so one of us stayed in the new rooms and the others stayed in the older one. Either way, the beds were comfortable. The bathroom is much nicer in the newer rooms, however. Downstairs, and you can sit and relax in the lounge.. and then really enjoy the food and carefully selected wines (they had Verdelho on the list.. fantastic!) which isn't too costly but absolutely delicious..Thank you for a wonderful experience.. we'll be back!

Best meal we've had in ages, and some of the best chips potentially ever. Highly recommend for meat eaters and veggies

We stopped here for a coffee after a lovely walk in Hope Cove. Ended up having cream tea followed by a lovely glass of wine. Cream tea was beautiful, service wonderful, staff amazing, and view incredible. Felt so welcome. Thank you. Will definitely be back
