Whittakers Fish & Chips in Trafford

Ordered a large fish (cod)..large curry sauce and a "cone" of chips... Cone was actually a large portion which I didn't want the curry sauce looked like a standard or small tub and the cod I wasn't convinced about .. The whole cost came to over £10...I'll give it a swerve next time...

Great local chippy but the fish was missing from my order!!!. Large chips isn't quite the same as cod and chips!! The young lady who took my order asked me several times to remind me of the order but still forgot the fish. Drinks weren't put in bag and if I hadn't noticed these would have also been missing. I also had to ask for cutlery!! Disappointing

I got a cone of chips (£2) to go and was handed a small tray of chips. I asked what that was about and was told "we don't do cones anymore". Take if off the menu then! I get a cone for the eating convenience while I'm on the move, how's a guy supposed to do that with a tray? The chips were ok, not great. I only went because Charlie's isn't open on Mondays, but I think next time I'd rather just go without chips. It's a shame it's not what it used to be, I used to go here all the time as a kid and it was the better chippy of the two.

Good is typically good, but at peak times you might be waiting a long time. I went at Friday tea time and had to wait forty minutes for fish and chips, and pudding and chips.

Husband suggested here because he remembered it winning loads of awards years back when he used to live nearer. Gotta say I was a little disappointed. He ordered fish and chips, and it came separate until he went back and asked for a tray so he could actually eat it more easily. They added salt and vinegar to the chips but you couldn't taste it and I'm sure I was over charged. I also had to ask for forks to be able to eat it. 😅

What a shame, tonight's fish and chips weren't up to scratch, chips were dry and hard and some were black. The fish which we love from here was a real let down as well, was very dry and tasteless. Never had a bad meal like this from here.

20 minute wait at lunch because there's no chips ready and then the chips were dry as old boots even freshly cooked. This isn't the first time, should've known not to go back, will definitely not be returning.

The old lady there was very slow and I had to repeat my order constantly. The chippy was absolutely empty and I noticed there was a seating area and the woman said I wasn't allowed to eat in. The old lady seemed very cold and rude and as if I was bothering her by ordering. I guess Urmston is a very white area and they don't like other ethnicities. Wouldn't recommend unless you're white. The food was soaked in oil. When I eventually got my food and walked out she didn't even remember the chips. I ordered fish and chips...

Portions going down in size, service gets slower every time - always have to wait absolutely ages as there is just never any chips in. Always got new teenage staff who don’t yet know the job. Not knocking the place and will continue to visit but it does need to tighten up before too many people are dissuaded. Edit. 13/09/23 just went again, had the most ridiculous “large” portion ever, to the point that it’s just annoying me now. Signs are up in the takeaway complaining about card fees and prices of ingredients but I really hope the management see this and stop skimping on portions. I left it a few months before coming back, and afraid it’s getting harder to justify paying top money for these portions… Management, please rethink.. you’ve saved a few pence of potato but losing regular customers. Edit. 16/05/24 just went back for first time in months, sorry to say it’s still just so painfully slow. I don’t get how there can ever be a wait for chips. The supervisor must know their key product is chips and that customers visiting are going to order chips. This insight alone is surely enough to drive them to make… chips. Please guys, 25 minutes to be served a bag of chips is just not acceptable. Regroup and focus on service and then you won’t need all the signs about costs… look at the chippy on Higher Road, absolutely bonkers pace and quality.

First visit it was very busy so I expected a hot order,how wrong I was it took less than 5 minutes to drive home every thing was COLD the chips left a layer of fat on the roof of my mouth and the fish batter was cold and soggy won't waste my money there again

This chippy is amazing, the staff are very polite, happy to help. And the manageress is a very warm and friendly person who caters for customers needs and in my opinion goes beyond the call of duty would recomend.

Absolutely fantastic!!! Catered for 32 people!!! We did a month end lunch at our company and the efficiency and quality was superb The service and the staff were impeccable, so friendly. Everyone in the office thoroughly enjoyed Also to add, the size of the small cod was fantastic - filled everyone up, (probably too much as we were all tired by the end of the work day!) Really recommend!

Great Gluten Free chippy. Food tastes great and nice portion sizes too. Has a choice of Gluten Free food available not just Fish and Chips.

**updated** no stars I'm afraid walked in when no customers in sat down waited 10 mins to be served table of 3 walked in served straight away I had to go to the counter to place our order!! Table of 3 got cups of tea we got nothing 10 mins later table of 3 got their food we still haven't been served anything!! After 35 mins asked where our food was to be told oh sorry were busy!! We walked out won't be going again terrible customer service would hate to go on a busy night

Had to wait for fish to be cooked. 30 mins ??. Chips were over cooked as was the price. Won't be going back 😔

Lovely lunch today with my friend. Lovely proper chip shop food. Returned at the start of November for a repeat visit and it was fantastic. Great value food as well. Keep up the great work. I will be returning again soon!

Very disappointed. Arrived 2 people were being served and a couple were upfront of me. A lady behind me left before being served. I waited 20 mins to get a bag of chips. Got home within 4 mins and they were cold.

Was hungry knew it was good have been in before. God prices. Nano fish chips peas tartare sauce slice of bread cup of tea for£6/60. Good value and tasty.

I absolutely love that I can finally get gluten free chippy when I fancy it. And not just fish & chips. They have gluten free pies etc. The staff are always friendly and the service is spot on. I've even rang ahead when I was in a rush. I've never eaten in the cafe side, but I've seen a lot of customers use it. If you are ever fancy a chippy day, take a visit to Whittakers, you won't regret it 😉

was my favourite chippy for years. however, new staff (who've been there long enough by now) are painfully slow. this is the reason why the queue is going out the door some days. I dont bother going if it's like this, otherwise you can expect a good 20 mins to half hour wait. MANAGER: what has happened to the portion sizes? the last 2 times I've been I've been given really small servings of chips. nowhere near enough what I would deem as acceptable, especially with the prices these days. when I get pie, chips, peas and gravy on a tray, the paper wrapping is usually bulging. looks half empty now. sort it out! that said, the food is still really nice and still one of the best around. it's just that some of the staff need a rocket up their ar*e and the chip portions need to go back to normal.

Great eat in and takeaway chippy, simple food but tasty and filling. Pleasant staff and good service, reasonable prices too

The best. The team are always really friendly despite generally being rushed of their feet and seem to know all the names of the regulars. I love the decor in the little cafe area; proper quaint. Check out the pea fritters.

Lethargic, sluggish, SLOW service with dollop of overpriced tatseless stodge to finish your esteem off with. FORTY minutes waiting for sausage, chips and gravy, and no, that is not an exageration! Just truly mind shatteringly shocking. I will not return to this soul draining den again and would only recommend it to only the most fervent of masacists. Avoid and consider growing your own potatoes which will yield before Whitaker's have even taken your order. One star is overly generous but is the minimum option available.

Had the Fish and Chips x 2, Absolutely spot on -- Large portions, lovely cod and crispy fresh chips. Recommended and I'll be back next time I'm in town.

Good chippy plenty of choice also do gluten free which was required.

Appalling. Waited nearly 20 mins ( with no queue) for the smallest large chips, 2 Sausages and a kids meal that isn't big enough to feed a toddler. Served up the food out of sight so couldn't see the appaling portions. Gave my food to my child and had to go elsewhere to get an extra meal. Won't come back.

Nice food,only 1 member of staff and the cafe was busy,so therefore the service was slow.second time in 2 weeks and the same problem.Also the meal deal included bread and butter,didnt get it and was told when i asked they had run out of bread,th8s was 2oclock in the afternoon.Shame about the service but not the girls fault she was doing her best.

This is my favourite Chippy by far, I’m a coeliac and they permanently have the gluten free fryers on. Not only is their fish and chips delicious but they have a range of gluten free pies, fish goujons and puddings. Now as if that wasn’t great enough… they now have gluten free MANCHESTER EGGS!! For those that don’t know what a Manchester egg is, be prepared for a treat. Picture a Scotch egg then picture this…. A pickled egg in the centre, wrapped in a mix of black pudding and sausage meat rolled in breadcrumbs and salt n vinegar crisps! COELIAC HEAVEN

I bought a chicken pie today and it was the worst thing I've ever eaten! I I never winge or complain about food usually but that was disgusting

Decided to eat in here instead of getting a takeaway. There's rarely parking spaces on the one-way road opposite which means a short walk from the town's car parks. Initially we were were the only customers in the cafe but there appeared to be only one member of staff who concentrated on serving the customers getting takeouts. We weren't clear on whether to order at the counter or wait for the staff member to attend the table. On approaching the counter the lovely staff member apologised for taking a while to serve us and informed us she would come to take our orders ASAP. The teapots leaked on pouring but the tea was delicious. As was the fish and chips. I ordered a small fish and it was the perfect size. I expected more chips than I received but actually the portion size was adequate. One sachet of tartar sauce was on the plate and this was just enough too. The mushy peas had an unusual taste but not unpleasant. The plastic table cloth was slightly tacky but was clean. The smiley, friendly staff apologised once again for our wait as we paid our bill. I think the price was about right... And no washing up! 😊

We had a nice sit down lunch this Friday. The scampi lunch deal on the menu with chips, bread and butter and tea or coffee was a great bargain. £7.50! Would come back again. Staff very friendly too. Thank you.

Fantastic food had fish and chips , the fish was enormous, you didn't come away hungry. The staff were lovely people very friendly and efficient at their work. It was kept clean and observed the hand cleaning stations for Covid

Brilliant chippy. I try to eat in as often as possible. That way the fish batter doesn't go all soggy while it's wrapped up.

If you want gluten free chips, fish, pies, sausage, gravy etc, it's the place to go to. Excellent food and a really good gluten free range, including a lot of home made pies etc. Take credit card/mobile payments.

My favourite takeaway, I'm never disappointed with the quality of food, the majority of the staff give you service with a smile. During the pandemic it always felt warm & friendly.

I have celiacs disease. So no gluten. Stumbled upon this chippy by accident. They did gluten free fish and chips, curry too. They also did gluten free homemade pies which are delicious 😋. The food was lovely, a tad expensive but well worth it.

In my opinion the best chippy around. Fresh fish as you order in the queue and the chips are always lovely and fresh. The staff in there are always working really hard and serve you as quick as they can despite covid restrictions. Highly recommend the small fish chips and peas offer they do😋

A really good fish and chip shop and they have been great during the pandemic with delivery and also allowing me to stage collection so I could get fish and chips to my Mum and Dad without our food going cold . Have to be honest, I think the second best chippy in Urmston

We have been going to this chippy for 7 years and honestly can say we have never had a bad one and we have been to a lot of chippys! The staff are all really lovely and friendly. There's a nice cafe style seating area at the back to have a sit down meal instead of takeaway aswell.. Definitely recommend. Almost forgot, they do gluten free aswell :)

Expected more to be honest. Chips were very pale with no crisp. The fish batter was too thick and not crispy and for a standard fish it was very small. Staff were friendly though.

Had an awesome (and absolutely massive) chip barm, one of the best I've ever had, which given it's the first time I've ate out since lockdown began is an absolute delight. Fast and friendly service.
