We arrived early afternoon, grandkids in tow. My friend talked to the person at the visitor centre and was put off visiting the roundhouse due to our grandkids being with us (6 & 11). This was certainly the impression she got. We decided to explore the church ruins and the graveyard instead, from which you can see the roof of the elusive roundhouse. Very interesting graveyard with some very old graves.

Popped in to use the cafe (which was empty) and received awful service - on entering the building we were greeted by a member of staff who simply said 'Hi' and went back to her conversation with the cook, to a good few minutes before she returned to see what we wanted. We were told to take a seat anywhere we wanted and she'd be with us shortly - at this point we were not left with any menus etc. Took another 5 minutes before the staff member returned and asked what we wanted, having not received a menu we asked what was available and were told to read the board (which was hidden out of sight round the corner). The menu consisted of soup (undisclosed type) and sandwiches: - ham and chutney - tuna mayo - egg mayo - cheese and chutney My partner misread the sign and had asked if she could have a ham and cheese sandwich (not an unreasonable request) and was told quite rudely 'NO, IT IS NOT ON THR BOARD', this was the final nail in the coffin. We will not return to this establishment, following the unprofessional/rude manner in which we served. Should have taken the empty cafe as a warning and kept walking.

Afternoon tea with seriously nut-allergic daughter, imagine our joy when making the usual anxious enquiries about the chocolate cake to hear the blessed words, we are a totally nut-free kitchen! Not only that, but the clearly homemade cake was delicious. Very friendly service, completely unpretentious. Two cafe tables for dogs outside, with water bowl. Small museum presents history & archaeology in intelligent, accessible way, shop with v good book selection and local crafts including artisan beeswax candles and soap. Well worth a visit; don't miss display of priceless photos and oral history of 1955 visit by HM The Queen upstairs.

Whithorn is a small town with an fascinating past, where it was once a place of pilgrimage for kings. If you're interested in church history then the story of St Ninian is something you can explore here, which challenges the more conventional tales of St Columba being the first to bring the Christian message to Britain. The nearby priory, small museum and reconstructed roundhouse are also interesting, although you need to pay to join the tour to see the latter, which is money well spent. Decent café at the centre means there is easily enough to do here for a morning or an afternoon with the family.

The Whithorn Story presents a wonderful exhibition of the history of Whithorn, going way back to ancient times giving a wealth of very well informed detail. They have an audio visual presentation which provides a good summary before viewing the exhibition. There is a very detailed explanation of archeological digs which have taken place over the years near to the ruined Priory, where over 1800 skeletons were discovered buried there. That was in the late 1980s and has been filled in now, but a replica roundhouse is in the course of being built which demonstrates the kind of property the ancients occupied. The ticket price also includes entry to the Museum, where various items of carved stone from the former Priory are exhibited and there is also a chance to view the crypts which are extensive.Within the Whithorn Trust building is a superb cafe staffed by very friendly people. The town of Whithorn itself has several shops, a Post Office, one Pub and a superb chip shop where everything if cooked freshly and crispily. An amazing and peaceful place to visit, 119 miles from Paisley and about 32 miles from Stranraer.

It is always good to have a visitor centre close to an historic site and so it proved with this one. The tour started with a short film filling in some of the background and then there were plenty of exhibits to examine and scenarios to look at which prepared us for going up to the Priory afterwards. The guide did a good enough job but was rather concerned about moving us on when as a party of 15 we would have liked to go more at our own pace and several of us felt that we'd been a bit shortchanged by the end. The small shop is delightful and has some nice local stuff to buy. We then went in to the museum itself and it was amazing how much information such a small museum could hold. The cafe sits at the front of the premises, in front of wall windows, so you can watch the world go by as you eat. Their soup of the day was a gammon & pea. They give you a huge bowl of it (although you can get a smaller bowl if you ask), with a thick slice of homemade brown bread. The soup was thick and very flavorful, with lots of gammon (ham), and the bread was chewy, lots of flavor and perfect without anything on it. Start with the audio-visual introduction, then the very informative museum and don't forget the wonderful collection of carved stones, with its witty and extremely knowledgeable guide. Many of the most important artifacts have been taken away into national collections, away from their context. This has left the residents of Whithorn with little to work with, but despite these depredations they have done a wonderful job. The Whithorn Centre is a combination of a great museum and a pleasaing tea room. Prior to my visit I knew nothing of St Ninian and the significance of the area to the origins of Christianity in Scotland. One fee buys a film show, a museum with the treasures from the area, the ruins of Whithorn Cathedral, the Priory Museum with its significant collection of Christian carved stones and a lot more! For those going for heritage Gary the Museum guide has knowledge and humour about St Ninian and the associated relics. The tea room offers delicious sandwiches, soup etc. freshly made to order and very tasty! There is also a small gift and book section in the shop. The Whithorn story is one that needs to be told and yet the Trust that runs the Centre is under threat of losing funds. This was a nice enough little place and we were the only ones in on a cold January day. No one was really engaging - it seemed as of they were surprised to have custom - but the contact we did have was I suppose pleasant enough, the cake reasonably priced and tasty and some good souvenirs. Its just so surprising that, in the middle of a recession in the depth of winter when you are the only ones in the place no one seems able to project their interest in you as a customer at all or in their product, or the area for which they are ambassadors. Thats a pity because with a little more confidence we could have felt less liek we were intruding and gone away with an entirely different impression. I'd like to give it a higher mark, but it was not in truth, by any stretch of the imagination 'very good'. Nice but regrettably average only. I woudl still go back however

A lovely warm welcome from the Lady serving us and so far the best breakfast I have ever had in Scotland (and I've had a few). Cafe is spotlessly clean and prices are fair, well worth a visit in my honest opinion.

This cafe served the worst scone I have ever had / didn't have. (and that's saying something as I'm in my 70s and have had a few in my time. You could build a house with a few of them. Inedible expensive rubbish. It came in a paper bag, no plate and a wooden disposable knife which struggled to cut it. The coffee was served in a paper cup. But was drinkable. Cost over £13 for two coffees and two inedible scones. I am disgusted and will definitely won't be back

Visited the Frothy this morning for the first & very last time as the cafe is closing. Whilst the cafe was comfortable the coffee wasn’t the best ever tasted and we were stunned at the price! Compared to other coffee houses close by it was surprising; could this be a reason they are not finding it profitable?
