White Swan Hotel in Stratford-on-Avon

We only stopped in for a drink before dinner, ( alas) , as this place was so warm , inviting, and full of charm. I really wish we'd eaten there, as it did look and feel like it would have been better than where we ate, but we will know for again!!. Stunning history to the place, and showcased to great effect- the décor was really postcard worthy. Plus a lot of credit to the staff, ( the bar mans name was Cameron , I think) who took the time and effort to tell us a lot about the building, and the relevance of the stuff on display. His knowledge and friendliness, added a lot to our, (too short) visit. Like i say I will insist on staying there next time- top marks

My prior review addressed dinner with average food and service. Breakfast also need leadership and training. In addition it is understaffed with three servers for a full dining room… tables remain dirty for an extensive period of time. A shame as the hotel itself is beautiful and well located. Probably a great location for Christmas but I would hesitate because of the food and beverage experience. Charging an extra 2.90 pounds for an espresso…?

All I can say is don’t bother Came in previous night couldn’t serve food as short staffed and a large party !! Came in to night couldn’t open a tab as manager doesn’t like it … can I order food yes ordered drinks went back to order Not taking any more food orders at the momen as busy How longs the wait Don’t know Never experienced any thing like it staff all seem terrified off getting in to trouble Wouldn’t mind only wanted soup and a salad as only vegetarian option Disgraceful…. Insult to injury wine not very nice either

Visited on the 7th of August after booking a table. Food was very good, but the service was lacking any kind of customer interaction. My partner and I arrived in time and hung around, waiting for someone to show us to our table; eventually, a very nervous looking member of staff arrived and we were seated. Front of house staff need better training. We went again on the 13th and the situation was much better. The staff that night were "on the ball", so there is hope for the old place.

Our AirBnB host recommended this place & what a treat. We received a warm welcome, and our hostess/server (from Portsmouth, missed her name) was really professional, friendly & attentive. Interesting menu, we all loved our choices. Would definitely recommend.

The white swan hotel nice hote,l staff Friendly and efficient but the food sub standard processed turkey and stuffing, the regular chef must of had Christmas off, the hors-d’oeuvres were small hard and tasteless, the crab was ok but minuscule, the Christmas dinner, under cooked poorly prepared, processed rubbish I wouldn’t feed it to my dog the Christmas pudding, a very small portion of sugar with no texture This was catering at its worst, we’ve had good and bad Christmas dinners in the past, and this was one of the worst

Popped into here for a bite to eat (and to warm up) in early Dec-23 during an evening in Stratford. Pleasant staff serving good pub grub food.

We enjoyed two days b & b at this hotel. The staff were great, very professional and extremely friendly. The rooms were very good and clean. There were tea & coffee making facilities in the rooms. The breakfast menu was extensive and hot food was made to order. The quality of the food was excellent. We would highly recommend this hotel and we hope to re-visit in the future. Thank you to the staff for a very enjoyable stay.

Un hotel e un ristorante che evocano la presenza del più grande scrittore inglese. Sembra di immergersi nella storia e assaporare le atmosfere del tempo. L'hotel, benché conservi la struttura antica, è dotato di ogni comfort. Il ristorante annesso è perfettamente in linea con l'elevato standard della struttura. Un'esperienza magica.

So this is a pub restaurant- that means not a huge menu and a relaxed vibe. That’s what I got from the friendly host who sat me by a stained glass window in the olde worlde dining room. I started with special local asparagus- simply grilled with some Parmesan shavings, followed by a pork chop with a variant on ratatouille and some chips. Wine by the glass from the bar was brought swiftly. Company was mainly local couples. Be kind, be relaxed and enjoy.

We called in for a drink Thursday evening 4th May having been out for dinner. It had just turned 10:00pm. There were two members of staff behind the bar, one serving a customer and one wiping the surfaces, neither acknowledged our presence until the gentleman behind us asked if we could be served. The young lady behind the bar rudely replied that she was cleaning as they were closing shortly. Eventually the young man behind the bar managed to serve us without speaking except to tell me how much to pay. I cannot speak for the accommodation as we were not staying there but I can honestly say that I won’t be back for drinks.

Great service and food was quick to come out. We pre booked our table easily. Really lovely touches for Easter with a free easter biscuit waiting at each seat and a child's Easter competition. Roast dinner was lovely however, our table of 10 people were disappointed with just two small roast potatoes on each plate and if you order roast chicken, it comes out on the bone. Vegetables tasted amazing and the Yorkshire puddings are huge and perfectly crunchy. I think for the portion, the price was a little high but it is good food.

Lovely hotel with our room very comfortable and the staff were all very pleasant. But totally let down by the food and the quality of service. Drink ordered and offered to be carried to is outside then sat on the bar for fifteen minutes till yet were prompted. A fairly small menu had many items "not available"; soup of the day was not the soup we were told it was. Vegetables were poor and burnt and one main course (a roast) was poor quality. The breakfast was advertised as freshly cooked absolutely was not. Although the eggs were fine the sausage, black pudding and bacon were horribly dried out and the baked beans were cold and congealed. Room cleaning was haphazard with no surfaces wiped down, tie backs not realigned and free water not replaced every day. Disappointing from such a nice hotel. Stay there but don't eat there!

Lovely hotel. Went in for lunch. Menu has been vastly reduced. So we all had a sandwich. Lovely choice of fillings but gosh the bread was so stale. Obviously no daily deliveries of fresh bakery products.

The place is very welcoming and has a lovely, relaxing atmosphere, however, we were let down by the food. We visited at lunch time and ordered two of the beef sandwiches in ciabatta bread, paid and found a table. One of the sandwiches was fine. The other was inedible with gristle running through the piece of beef. No staff were around to report to. When the plates were collected by the waitress we mentioned that the beef was inedible and was left on the plate. She said that she would report this to the chef. We finished our drinks expecting someone to come and talk to us but nobody did. As we were leaving we approached the same waitress and asked if she had given feedback to the chef to which she said yes she had and that was it, there was no offer of a refund or a gesture of goodwill. We said this, that we were surprised that no further action would be taken and she just said ‘have a lovely day’! We were very annoyed but as it was a special day for us we decided not to make a fuss and left. Really poor considering we had paid upfront for something that was inedible.

The restaurant is exceptionally beautiful and retains the history so well that it feels like traveling back in time. Just gorgeous. I stayed at the hotel for three nights, and dined at the restaurant each night. The staff were nice, yet despite the restaurant and bar being rather quiet, they always looked completely rushed off their feet and very subdued in a slightly awkward way. Elizabeth, who had helped me previously with an hotel issue, was extremely helpful and lovely. The atmosphere was almost dead. The first night I had the Sunday Roast, and had to have the pork as the beef was finished. It was tasty and well prepared, however the cauliflower was just mush. Best Yorkshire pudding I have had in a while. I ordered the Apple Crumble for dessert, and was extremely disappointed. The apples were so incredibly tart and cold that they were practically inedible. The crumble was too little and seemed to just be a crushed biscuit, and the ration of crumble to apple was completely off. The menu specified coconut ice cream as an accompaniment, however vanilla ice cream was served without mention of the change. The second night I ordered the curried sweet potato soup, which was good. I asked for a main portion, as it only a starter option, and the server said it was fine but still only served me a starter portion which was incredibly small. I also had to ask twice for bread and butter. The third night I ordered the corn-fed Chicken and the Crema Catalina Tart. The fried kale with the chicken tasted purely of oil and bitterness and completely overpowered the dish. The tart was tasty, although it was ice, ice cold. I ordered room service breakfast and almost all of the options I chose were substituted or not added at all. I can only assume they were out of stock. All in all, the food was alright, small-portioned, and extremely overpriced.

Some Bar staff don’t deserve the job, I bought the wife a Prosecco at the bar , it was about a quarter full! I asked if that was right, he barked back at me he measured it out , I said the wife will think I’ve drank half of it, everyone says that he barked back at me! The drink looked shockingly sad, I think they need to change the glasses or up the measure, Always liked the hotel but that has put us off returning there again!

Disabled customers struggled to get in and find a seat, got a table and went to the bar, they served the couple in front of us and were chatty like they knew them then walked off. We waited at the bar for 5 minutes for the bar man to re appear to be rudely told the bar was closed until 5pm and we had to leave. The same man had just watched us struggle into the bar and find a seat, he had plenty of time to let us know before we transferred from wheelchair to seat and could have simply made us aware of this. Won’t be returning

We dined for Christmas Day and the food was absolutely disgusting the roast potatoes were hard the meat was dry and overcooked I have lemon sole and it came with nothing no veg at all so was starving when we had finished as the sweet was granola chucked on a plate with a hard baked apple very dissatisfied at the price for what we received! This is the second time we have visited the first time we were sat for nearly an hour and and half with no drinks with two children under the age of five we were there for 4 hours in total we did complain but to no avail

My wife treat us to a meal to end our weekend in Stratford on a high. Unfortunately the meal we had was very poor. I asked for pork only to be told they had run out, it was 6.00pm. I chose the beef as an alternative which was a mistake. The food was warm at best and the beef was grey in colour rather than pink. I didn’t complain at the time to avoid offending my wife. This is supposed to be a top hotel which we intended to stay at for our next wedding anniversary, clearly we have changed our minds on that. If you want a better meal go to The Thatched Tavern opposite

Went for just a drink and thought the hotel is beautiful so decided to go the following night for a meal after reading the menu on the outside of the hotel and also on the website and there was one particular dish we both were keen to have. Having arrived for our meal and sat at our table we were handed the menu and the main course we both wanted and the reason we booked it was not on the menu (although still on the menu showing outside and on website) there was nothing g else on the menu we fancied (very short menu) so we left and went elsewhere.very disappointed.

First visit to this venue, found a table which we cleared and cleaned ourselves ( baby wipes ) .. We had our table in the bar area…Ordered food and waited approximately 45 minutes which was fine and expected. Food arrived one plate at time ( there were 4 of us ) first dish not overly hot , but by the time they all arrived was quite cold. Once the food arrived we had to ask for cutlery , they bought 3 sets, I had to go and ask for the fourth set ,again we had to wait for last set of cutlery, condiments arrived another 5 minutes later 😫 I spoke to a young guy who presumably was in charge, he offered to replace some of the meals as they were cold, but as we were on a time limit (train to catch) we really couldn’t wait and also didn’t want to be eating after the others had finished… I feel very sorry for the chef as he/she produced nice food but the whole occasion was spoilt by clearly untrained staff.. Tables should be set up first, allowing people to eat as soon as their food arrives. Get your act together managers as the incompetence of the staff will put people off from returning…

Greated by lovely ladies on desk , who very kindly moved cars about as I am a blue badge holder and I could get easy access to the reception .Everything/everyone was brilliant from the maid to the bar staff/waiters the lot, very polite very attentitive .Breakfast was of great choice and served 08.00 -11.00 which is great as we not early risers on weekends away .Decor throughout the bar/hotel/rooms was lovely .Very central for walks to shops or sight seeing .Love Stratford been about 4 times now , will defo stay again at White Swan.Thank you everyone for making our weekend lovely .

Entramos aquí fuera de la lluvia para almorzar; nada lujoso, solo un sándwich. Fue decididamente promedio y eso es un poco exagerado. Un croque monsieur era una tostada de jamón y queso con el queso en el exterior y ni siquiera una pizca de la salsa bechemel que hace que un croque sea un croque. Un sándwich de jamón, queso, pepinillos, lechuga y tomate venía con pan ligeramente rancio, lo que parecía sospechosamente cheddar rallado (y no la variedad Croxtob Manor anunciada) no tenía lechuga ni tomate y, sin pecado, ¡sin mantequilla! Vamos, seguramente puedes hacerlo mejor que esto.

We had a lovely lunch, for the 6 of us & it was really good quality food at a reasonable price, plus full bar service. Absolutely loved it.

My family and I, traveling from the US, were hoping to experience an olde English Christmas in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and this charming and historic hotel met our expectations in EVERY way! The historic Tudor charm of this beautiful inn, along with the warmth of the hotel staff, made this a most memorable, magical, and special Christmas. We honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience! The rooms were lovely, quite cozy, and comfortable. Traveling with our mom, who has physical mobility issues, we were grateful to be placed in a little wing on the first floor so that our room was adjacent to hers. We were also grateful for the lift, essential for our mom. The staff festively decked the halls for Christmas, and the warmth and charm of the Tudor restaurant and bar area, in addition to the reception area, made our holiday experience extra merry and bright. The food at the restaurant was outstanding, and the staff extremely attentive, personable, and professional. I would especially like to express our sincere gratitude to the fabulous Pip, Georgia, and Hannah for their exceptional service, warmth, and kindness. If you are planning a trip to Stratford, I would highly recommend this historic inn, and I would like to to thank everyone at the White Swan for a truly magical and memorable Christmas! We enjoyed every moment of our stay with you. Cheers to continued success in 2020! We hope to come back for another stay some day!

Foi uma estadia muito agradável. Café da manhã gostoso, quarto com uma ótima banheira. Jantamos no pub que fica dentro do hotel e foi uma grata surpresa encontrar a portuguesa Tania que nos atendeu com extrema simpatia e nos ajudou nas escolhas perfeitas dos pratos.

This is an extremely historic building and boasts beautiful original features including lots of wood panelling and interesting decoration. It s a joy to sit in there and take it all in. We only tried a few starters/nibbles to go with our drinks but no complaints at all on that front and lots more that we’d like to have tried had we not already booked in elsewhere for dinner. Judging by the menu and seeing what was being served, I suspect we wouldn’t have been disappointed. We returned another night to sit outside, drinking and people watching in this very central location. I’d be very tempted to give their accommodation a try should we visit Stratford again.

Greeted by the small of cooked fish as we entered, not nice, but things did not look bad. Great looking place, old, historic, quirky, cosy. We were here to enjoy a nice afternoon pint in Stratford.

This is one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. The meal took over 1.5 hours to arrive. No explanation, no apologies and basically no communication.

My wife and I visited the White Swan Hotel 24th - 28th September to celebrate my wife's birthday. What a beautiful hotel, pub and restaurant. We had booked a Classic Double Bedroom and were not disappointed; beautiful classical painting headboard on the bed, plenty of storage, very stylish bathroom with luxury toiletries

If you are looking for a comfortable, friendly, great located hotel, then this ticks all the boxes!

Had Sunday roast here with my family, it was excellent, so much food, the vegetable selection was simply amazing, the chicken was so tender and properly roasted, it was so good all the staff were so helpful.

We had reserved a table for Sunday lunch having arrived on the Shakespeare Express for a double birthday day out. Always difficult to choose places that live up to our standards as a group so The White Swan was perhaps a risk on a busy Sunday lunchtime on a beautiful late summers day, indeed the waitress who served us (she was very good) warned us there might be a delay. But no.....I cannot criticise any aspect of our meals, they were excellent, beautifully cooked and presented and bought out in good time. Would not hesitate to go back.

We are locals and use the White Swan especially during the autumn and winter months as it’s a great place to relax on the sofa’s in a warm friendly atmosphere.

It’s old and quite interesting but not inspiring at all , something’s missing, atmosphere, staff enthusiasm maybe.

We ate here for four meals over a 2 day stay. Every meal was delicious and contained lots of fresh vegetables.

Popped in for a drink and hoping for some food. VERY disinterested staff. VERY overpriced beer. Not good beer. Not good food. I was asked if I wanted cheese on my burger -it would have cost an extra £3.50! Had a pretty basic burger and over done rustic chips for £11.50. Tables dirty and only half cleared. Wasn't busy. I wonder why. Waiter forgot to bring my cutlery. Steer clear don't waste your time and money.

We had a few drinks on a Saturday night, place was fairly empty and service was slow only 2 bar staff. We returned Sunday night and the soft drink dispenser wasn't working but ordered anyway, sat outside at the front and ordered some food. Took ages to arrive even though it wasn't busy. The burger was small and the bun base was rock hard like concrete so possibly stale as wasn't showing signs of being cooked/griddled/warmed. The burger was mediocre at best. Also ordered the rosti with lardons/fried egg and burnt onions. I would say Birdseye Rosti's are better than the one I received, the lardons were so hard there was no moisture left in them so was like chewing a piece of old leather and the onions were not burnt but were ok. All in all quite awful food so wouldn't not recommend. The hotel looks lovely, looks like a lot of money was spent, but really need to sort their food out.

Stylisch! Man fühlt sich in die Vergangenheit versetzt und bekommt klassische Speisen modern interpretiert. Wirklich gut gelungen. Das Personal ist freundlich und gibt auch gerne Auskunft über die Historie dieses Hauses.

What a con.... You have to sign in to their WiFi and enter your details, they then send you a code which doesn't come through straight away... The offer was what caught our eye and the reason we visited. May have bought more if the offer was actually real or not come in if you had the opportunity to read the Ts&Cs.; Nearly went somewhere else but short for time. Not impressed...

Returning to Stratford upon Avon to our gem of a hotel find. It doesn't disappoint. Amazing room, attention to detail, staff remembered us. Welcome tray of cakes and berries on arrival! Small fridge stocked with selection of soft& alcoholic drinks, plus fresh milk. Then teas coffee bottled water. Beautiful room and wet room, full air con. Staying for 7 nights with breakfast included, again great cold choice on buffet bar then hot offerings freshly cooked by breakfast chefs for you. Wasn't well so went to collect prescription when we got back Had a little surprise waiting for us really is an amazing hotel which has staff who go above and beyond every day. Had a lovely weekend at this hotel. The room was clean and really comfortable. The dinner was delicious with excellent service. I have given it four stars because the breakfast let it down, the person who served us was terrible very rude! We weren’t given milk for the tea or butter for the toast, we had to ask for everything even the toast! Other guests who were being served by others were being looked after much better! Such a shame as up until that point it was 5 stars! Sometimes it’s the small things that make the difference!

This place is just fantastic, rooms are so beautiful and the decor is out of this world, really unique. The hotel goes above and beyond with their service and the bar and evening meals are lovely

Visited establishment for a drink on Saturday 25 May 2019!

We had two delicious roast dinners (chicken cooked in two ways, and pork). When we arrived the lounge looked full with no available tables so we went into the dinning room and were served excellently by a very competent guy called Thomas who was very professional and friendly. Thank you

This is a popular and beautiful old bar, dating back to the mid fifteenth century. We just had sandwiches, but they were well presented and came with home-made chips. It is within walking distance of the birthplace, shops, river and theatre.

Five of us had a great meal, with good food and excellent drinks, on our first evening in Stratford, going back there a couple of days later for morning refreshments. We chose well.

Llegamos justo cuando empezaba el almuerzo. En general, el servicio fue bueno, aunque el hombre alto y delgado de mediana edad que trajo nuestra comida prácticamente la arrojó sobre la mesa y luego se fue sin preguntar si necesitábamos algo más. Como era pescado y papas fritas, fui a pedir vinagre, que el mismo tipo me entregó sin decir nada, era un poco extraño. El resto del personal era encantador, aunque. La comida estaba bien, pero he tenido mejor, especialmente por casi 14 platos. Los guisantes blandos eran arvejas de jardín congeladas combinadas, sin ningún líquido, por lo que tenían una textura extraña, y la salsa tarter era insípida. El comedor era cómodo, los baños impecables.

Only popped in for a drink and though busy, managed to find seats. Service was good for a busy bar. Very nice to sit outside in front and watch the world go by. The restaurant appeared attractive with wood-panelled walls.

Hotel is full of character and very well located for exploring Stratford. Rooms were comfortable and ours had a large bathroom. Staff friendly, helpful and efficient. Cooked English breakfast was good and accompanied by a good buffet. NOTE Parking is a potential fly in the ointment in that the only really convenient place to park is a public car park immediately behind the hotel but getting a space is by no means guaranteed and it costs £14 per day. The next best option in the Windsor Street multi story car park which is a couple of hundred yards away. it however has no working lift, is very dingy but is cheaper at £10 per 24 hours. We had to go to the 8th floor to get a space on a Sunday and with bags and the stairs to contend with not ideal but ok if ones fit. Overall a very nice comfortable and very interesting hotel but note the parking issue.

We visited Stratford-Upon-Avon and stumbled upon this place. They had availability without reservation which was great. The staff were brilliant and the roast dinner outstanding. Great portion and perfect vegetable accompaniment. Would most definitely recommend and go back.

Very nice dinner for four in a lovely oak panelled dining room. Reasonably priced for the area and the food was excellent.

Just returned from our weekend here and I cannot fault either the venue or the delightful staff. I had spent a long time planning a romantic weekend away for myself and my partner and the receptionists and managers had been wonderful with communication about the booking and helping me to select the perfect room for our stay.

Popped in to get a soft drink whilst we waited for our table at El Greco to be ready (next door). Difficult to make ourselves understood by the bar staff. Slow service. Lack of ambience in this huge pub, which is a shame, as there are lots of nooks which could be cosy!
