Went out into the pub from the campsite... only two local guys were in there (including the owner). Had a great evening there... popped in and felt very welcome. Thank you. 4.50£ for a Pint? can't find that anywhere else apart from Wetherspoons...

Love this place. Simple pub with a really good menu and food. I had the fish pie, a couple craft beers and the dessert which actually might be my favorite, apple and gooseberry crumble tart with custard. Bangin'. The locals are great crack and super friendly. A quick stop in a pub ended up in a longer night than expected but is one of the highlights of our coast to coast trek. Danby Wiske and the white swan are a must stop!

It was reasonably priced. The room was quite cramped with a tiny bathroom, but at least we had one others in hotel were sharing . It was very basic accommodation. We arrived around 2.30 but were unable to access accommodation until 4pm, with everyone trying to check in at same time. The food was good, and the service was very efficient.

The rooms are simple but clean. Just what an walker needs. There was an friendly girl invite to the hotel and bar. Good tasted cold beer when arrived.Fantastic food at the evening. Nice women served the breakfast at the morning. Nice idea to leave the sticks and boots downstairs. Actually they dried the boots in front of a fan.

Why is someone this rude and grumpy running a pub?! No customer service at all. This pub could be a little goldmine with the right landlord. Don't bother, even the beer was warm.

Don't go here. You're not welcome. Go to the campsite near the church where there are spare tents and you will be warmly welcomed whatever time of day you arrive. It's not a good experience at the White Swan despite it being the only place to eat in the village. The landlord has no customer service skills at all. We three senior experienced walkers were made to feel like children when we arrived. His instructions are extreme and the way he speaks is rude. After dinner we asked for coffee but were brusquely told he couldn't possibly serve us coffee and that we could only have drinks from the bar. The portions of food can only be described as mean - breakfast was one small tomato, one tiny fried egg and one small sausage. The atmosphere with other walkers at dinner was however it's saving grace. Great cameraderie. Hence the one star. Wish someone else would take this pub over.

The draft beer was great indeed. But, the feel of this "Pub" is not really comfy. There was no music (?), and the landlord looked more like he wanted to close soon... not a place where you'll have another pint.

Nice pub, decent menu. You have to order the food before 5pm and then it's cooked and ready to serve from 6.30. I had the liver and onions with veg and gravy. It was tasty. The veg cooked well. The gents opposite me had the pie which looked really good as well. They said it was. Pavlova for dessert. Nice, fresh. I don't drink any more, but there was a good selection of local ales as well.

Go somewhere else. The owner is off on some little power trip. He gives you orders as you arrive and woe betide you if you don't obey, without question. He then takes pleasure in doing little things that you don't realise at the time but are dreadful. Eg. When pouring my beer he left it to settle while I paid and then quietly topped it up from a glass he had already taken a swig out of! This was not the worst that he did. My dinner was slop on a plate which had to be chosen and ordered on arrival and then served at 6pm. He was rude, abrupt and offensive to other walkers as they arrived as well. He relies on the walkers for his income and he treats them appallingly. The sooner there is a new proprietor the better. The only reason I gave one star is because none was not an option.

Says dog friendly but we had the feeling from the moment we walked in that the landlord would have preferred our dogs not be there at all. Food was ok (have to pre-book) and beer was good, but it was nearly empty and not a single local was in there. Possibly says it all.

This pub is excellent. The landlord and landlady are a lovely and very hospitable couple who made us feel very welcome. The food was delicious and wholesome, proper Yorkshire grub. The beer was also great and at a very good price. We camped for two nights at this pub and would definitely stay again. The facilities are basic and affordable, and just what we needed on our trip through the area. Would recommend.

The reviews do not do the pub justice. Excellent location for the C2C, great food and good location directly on the trail, this pub is easily overlooked. Phone ahead if hiking during low season to make sure it's open.

I nearly did not go into this pub having read the previous reviews. As I stepped into the village after a 20 mile walk (coast to coast), they opened their doors unexpectedly As you would expect this time of year it is down season and business out in this part of the countryside don't operate the same as peak season. They offered me a seat and service immediately, and explained that you have to really book ahead this time of year to get food, and probably wouldn't usually open for business until around 7 or 8 pm (for locals I'm guessing) , however I was lucky and someone else booked ahead meaning I got served as well. I got offered a place to camp locally (as it was off season) I had an absolutely divine meal (although I had to wait, I was informed at the beginning that it is off season times tend to be longer) although under construction the shower facilities were modern, spacious and very clean (I didn't touch the walls when showering either). They sell home made coast to coast badges and medals for a very reasonable price (I bought 1) Given the opportunity I would not pass this place, I got chatting to the residential barman Kevin and the landlord steeve and his wife and they were most pleasant and sociable You can see they have invested a great deal into this pub and it should be appreciated. If I have a problem with a service I tend to take it up with the person providing as I tend to get a good response. Alternatively you can keep your mouth shut and be a keyboard warior to nearly no effect.

Had a meal there last night. Staff friendly and food good. Due to low number of visitors at the moment they ask you order food when you arrive in the village with dinner at 6.30pm. Some of the recent reviews maybe lack some understanding of running a pub of this type. However, we had a very pleasant evening, I hope other visitors do too.

Extremely unwelcoming - find somewhere else to stay. Our experience was shockingly similar to the previous person’s 1 star review. We arrived here to camp after an extremely long day on the Coast to Coast. We had phoned ahead to book but on arriving they didn’t have any record of our order. They grudgingly showed us to the small, messy camping field behind the pub and then immediately asked us to pre-order food for dinner. They didn’t give us any time to rest, shower or pitch our tent. And they wouldn’t show us the menu, and decided our meal would be steak pie because that’s what they’d “prepared in advance”. They gave us 10 minutes to pitch our tent before we had to come in for dinner, even though we were obviously tired and wanted a shower first. Our meal was fine, but clearly just bought and reheated, with instant gravy and plain boiled veg on the side. The bar man was, as others have mentioned, drinking (a lot!) behind the bar and all the staff were very unfriendly. (The young bar maid was was friendly though!) The camping facilities are extremely limited - the toilets available in the night are the gents toilets as the ladies toilets are inside. We’d recommend camping at the other campsite in the village which looks much nicer! Good luck!

Find somewhere to camp instead. To elaborate: We arrived having walked 24 miles of the Coast to Coast walk, and I was desperate to just get my boots off and get in the shower. The landlady, Gill, was doddering at best, and refused to let me sit down, followed me as I tried to do as she asked, and could not understand the state I was in. We were forced to order our dinner before we were allowed upstairs, and were allowed just half an hour for the two of us to shower and change before we had to be back down for dinner. They are clearly not walkers, and don’t know the local area or the coast to coast walk very well by the sound of things. The food was quite obviously from the local butchers, two hard boiled scotch eggs, a steak pie which while it was nice it was just plopped on the plate and clearly not made in-house, no choice of sides (plain new potatoes weren’t particularly inspiring) and my partner’s lasagne had come straight out of the microwave. Drinks were fine but the barman seemed drunk, and was drinking beer while serving. The breakfast was also pretty lack luster. For £143 for the meal and one night’s stay (I could pay less than that in London!) I feel totally ripped off. I also didn’t appreciate the landlady diagnosing me with sunstroke??? Very strange. Don’t stay here, literally just camp you’ll feel much more at peace.

We were the first visitors of the day having walked from Richmond that morning. The landlord was “quirky” but quite friendly. We booked for dinner but had to take an early 6pm slot as they run a system of first to book has the 6pm slots and each subsequent booking is at progressively later 10 minute intervals. The other barman seems to have an odd personality for bar work but served our drinks and took our food order ok. It’s the only pub in the village. Food was nice and reasonable value.

Reserved a table online for a small family reunion. Clearly a popular spot and there were a lot of people milling around outside and drinking outside the pubs on the main street. Service inside was good and there was a good choice of food which was very tasty. Sadly there was a large group of well watered men booked onto the table next to us, in the area by the bar, which completely spoilt the last half of our meal as we simply couldn't hear each other talking. It was a real shame that staff didn't consider putting us in the other part of the restaurant where there were several empty tables all evening, or relocating us for the last part of our meal when it would have been obvious we could no longer converse or hear. .... this would have made all the difference. (It would have been awkward having to ask to be moved ... but care from front of house staff could have carefully relocated us.)

What can I say. Poor service after I ordered and was told my order would be with me in an hour. So when it got to one hour and 20 minutes later I rang again to be told they were very busy but the order had left the shop 10 minutes ago and would be with me in two minutes (I live one minutes drive away) so two minutes after my call the food arrived, driver ran from car to door took money not even an apology from him and walked slowly back to his car. The food was cold and just chucked in the box. Can safely say I won’t be ordering again any time soon, waste of £15 as most went in the bin.
