A lovely quiet pub with great beer and fantastic food. After a day on the boat this is a great venue to relax and have a good meal before retiring back to the boat for the night.

This was our first time visiting The White Lion, only a short walk from the canal. Wow, what a find. The pub was nicely decorated and furnished with brilliant Halloween decorations. The lady behind the bar was a bit quirky but other than that, the service was good. The roast was amazing; lovely tender beef with copious vegetables. They even brought a separate gravy boat. Only criticism was the food could have been hotter (the plates and serving dish were not warmed). As you can see from the photo', the food was nicely presented. Amazing value. We will definitely be back.

We visited here whilst on a recent holiday, we were staying on a canal boat and moored near North Kilwroth Wharf, so decided to visit this pub for our evening meal. We were able to prebook a table for 6 of us and a dog for 6.30pm. It was at least 5 minutes stood at the entrance before anyone came to speak to us (one lady behind the bar was serving), one waitress walked past us a couple of times without acknowledgement. Eventually we were sat and drinks order taken, we were able to take advantage of the 'early bird' offer of 2 meals for £14 from a specific menu. Also given the main menu. We had 2 children with us, aged 12 and 9 year old. The 12 year old does often eat from the main adult menu now but the 9 year old has a small appetitie and sensory needs, especially around food, and a quick glance showed us that there was nothing on the main menus she would eat, but also no kids menu listed on there. I asked the lady behind the bar if there was a kids menu to be told it was only available for under 7's. When I questioned this, she said she'd send the waitress over. I also asked what the pie and soup of the day were, she didn't know. I sat back down and the waitress appeared to tell us the pie and soup options, and again told me we couldn't have the kids menu as she was over 7 years old and the portions were too small for her. I wasn't impressed with this, and insisted on the children's menu being provided. With great reluctance she finally gave it to me. Chicken nuggets, chips and baked beans were listed - perfect. We then had to wait another 10 minutes before our drinks arrived and they took our food order (the pub wasn't overly busy). The rest of the evening passed by without incident, the food was ok, decent portions considering they were supposed to be smaller meals (as per the early bird offer). Other than the reluctance to give us the children's menu and the slow start, the staff were all pleasant. The pub itself is nicely decorated and has a nice atmosphere. Would I recommend? Probably not tbh. And we won't return despite being driving distance from where we live. I'd highly recommend that the owner / manager rethinks their policy on the children's menu - I've never come across anywhere that has refused to give me a kids menu when asked before so this was very disappointing.

Very disappointing meals for a party of 6. Vegetables swimming in water not strained. Pie surrounded by weak luke warm gravy and not really a pie it was stew with pastry on top. Table mats and cutlery not clean. Garlic bread a bit of joke - expensive for 4 small pieces of toasted bread and came with a salad. Mussels good but crusty bread ! We suggest they change their supplier. The waitress was delightful and tried very hard.

New Menu, new furniture, new outdoor courtyard, just a complete difference since the previous landlord and the atmosphere feels completely different too. My wife and I had lunch here today with 2 very good friends. The standards in all respects were excellent. The comfort and standards of hygiene were perfect, the service from the bar kitchen and table was faultless and our meals each had excellent portions and were most enjoyable. It did exactly what a country pub should do and to a very high and enjoyable standard. Then we had the final bill and that was very reasonable indeed. The White Lion really does deserve to succeed..we will certainly be going back.

This pub was pretty much a halfway point between Cannock and Peterborough where we met up with friends and what a lovely pub. I'd not been here since 2012 Kilworth challenge and the pub is very different. It's even had work done on it since the photos on this tripadvisor page. Very nice! The landlord was great and made us all feel very welcome whilst doing the right thing by following the Covid practices which impressed me from the off. Then the food was just great. It was a 3 course meal including Sunday Roast which was all great and at a reasonable price. I was actually surprised to see how quiet it was given how good the meals on offer were. Great job and I'm jealous it isn't my local. We'll almost certainly use again when meeting our friends from back Peterborough way.

Cliff has managed to fill the place with great charity pub quizzes on the last Sunday of the month, along with other fun themed evenings. If you are looking for a great local pub this is the place to come. Please note that this is no longer a Wine Bar or somewhere trying to be a posh upmarket restaurant and is under new ownership

I have been to this pub a few times previously and have found the food of a high standard and generally enjoyed both the meal and the ambiance. However on this occasion and totally unaware of the change in management / chef.... we have what I can only call a mediocre and disappointing pub meal. Yes the staff were friendly but the menu was bog standard and whilst edible, nothing special! To be honest we could have gone to our local and saved ourselves the journey. My daughter had fish and chips and both appeared to have been cooked from frozen. The steaks are locally sourced and as such were much better and cooked well. This is a lovely pub with lovely up market decor, but with a basic menu. I understand the new owner is trying to tempt locals in, however I would like to suggest that whilst that is a good idea, you are as a result losing customers who want something a bit special but still local... you can have both you know! Extend that menu please and get a chef in who prides himself (or herself) in cooking good food well... not cheap and straight from the freezer please. It's unlikely we will return...should have gone to Market Harborough or Gilmorton!

After the refurbishment we thought things would be improved . Sadly not. The overall decor was better, the couple of locals at the bar and the only one table booked for a Saturday night should have been an omen. The starters, garlic prawns, on bruschetta, more chilli prawns obviously not for someone who hates chilli , but the shredded duck, , what can one say, over cooked to the point of uneatable, no mungo beans so sent back half eaten. Only an apology ! The main course, perhaps I shouldn't have ordered duck again ( but I do like it when cooked pink and succulent ) was again massively overlooked., dry and crispy , half uneatable , again just an apology . Husbands steak was fine. There was no reduction in price, the barman/ waiter wasn't allowed. So,won't be returning !,

Previous xperience of this restaurant is that there is all ways something slightly wrong. This time it was the wait for our food, which was appalling. 35 mins from order to receiving our starter and 30 mins for our main course. My starter was platter of Italian meats so no cooking required and my wife's was garlic prawns. 10 mins to stir fry I imagine. It was very quiet, only 4 other people in the place. So workload not an excuse. In fact I noted another table were served their starters separately with a 10 min time difference. The young man serving was very polite but not attentive, preferring to speak to friends at the bar. I did complain at the end of our meal and he knocked 2 drinks from our bill for our wait. This is hardly the point though . The food was ok although my 12 oz steak bore no resemblance to Sirloin but was a misshapen lump of meat. By this time I just wanted to leave and could not be bothered to complain. You have a great environment but service and attention to detail let you down.

My family and I came up from cardiff for the weekend of the 13th and 14th may, and on our way home from a lovely weekend away we wanted to stop off for some food. We chose the white lion as it was on our way home and it looked very appealing from the outside. Firstly we got seated away from everyone else in a separate room, which I thought was slightly strange. We then ordered drinks which we had no issue at all. The waitress then came over to take our food order which was fine and she never told us that there was going to be a wait on food. So we then waited patiently for our starters...40 minutes went by, still no starters. The starters finally came and were served in a sort of kilner jar which was silly as it was very awkward to eat from. We then waited for our mains, 20 or so minutes went by and we were still waiting.. by this time my dad went to ask how long the food will be as we had somewhere to be. The waitress said it is ready 'now' it wasnt, so we waited another 10 minutes until we decided to leave. We paid for our drinks and starters and left. If it was up to me I wouldn't of paid for anything. We will not be visiting again i'm afraid.

The ambience seemed great and the varied menu and helpful barman gave us the confidence that we were going to have a good meal. We were very hungry and ordered starters which were fine. However after an hour and a quarter when our main courses had not arrived, we began to wonder what was going on in the kitchen particularly as we were the only people eating, My wife's risotto was good, but my stir fry was a disgrace, consisting of a plate of chewy noodles placed on top of a couple of mangetouts and a tiny amount of other veg, and some extremely dry pieces of duck on top of that. The whole plate was absolutely swimming in soy sauce, probably about half a bottle of it! The meal was inedible and I filled up on the leftovers of my wife's generous portion of risotto. Whilst pleased that when I complained, my money for the meal was refunded, it concerned me that the waiter (Toby) appeared to know that the meal was inadequate, and expressed absolutely no surprise that I could not eat it. I really wonder how anyone could dare to sent out and have served, a meal of this quality. As Toby was the only person in evidence on this occasion, and not knowing how the establishment is managed, I did not ask to speak to anyone else, and was grateful to have the refund. However I would have much preferred to have had an edible meal: something that a refund cannot rectify. Toby said that there were staffing problems in the kitchen and I said that if that were the case it would have been much better if he had guided us in our menu choice rather than serving us something which he (and the kitchen staff) must have known had not been prepared properly. So be warned - at this place, a varied menu does not mean that the expertise is there in the kitchen to cook what you choose!

First off the prices are different online to actual prices so be careful. We ordered our starters (crab cakes and bruchetta) and our mains (both chicken). The crab cakes dry but edible. The bruchetta was cheese on toast and not what it says on the menu. Waiting for our mains and the next table recieves theirs. As we looked over we noticed the chicken was swimming in cream ( my partner is lactose intolerant) this was not mentioned on the menu. When asking we were told by the chef through a waitress it does say it on the menu, however after showing the waitress the menu it doesn't. We left very disappointed and hungry with little apology. The portion sizes were ridiculously small towered on mash to make them look more. This spoilt my partners birthday meal!

My partner and I really enjoy coming to the White Lion, we live in the next village which has a very upmarket food pub, however we always find ourselves being drawn to the cosy bar area of the White Lion. We are always extended a really warm and genuine welcome. The food is always of a very good standard here and especially the home made pies. The service is always Excellent and it's clear that this place prides itself on this. The decor is modern traditional and has a real nice vibe. Highly recommended.

Can thoroughly recommend this place as it has a very warm atmosphere combined with great service and delicious food. We had the homemade pies this evening which looked and tasted amazing. Thank you to the White Lion for a wonderful evening! We will be back!!

First time visit to The White Lion, impressed by the appearance and decor. But being a cold and frosty night outside, it was a pity the log burner wasn't on - the place was cold and we had to sit with coats and scarves on to keep warm. We were given the menu to peruse, but had to listen to a list of choices which were not available, including steak. We ordered from what was left, but 10 minutes later the waiter returned to say that they were out of lemon sole which two of our party had ordered. Given there was hardly anyone else in the restaurant eating, it seemed odd that they had run out of so much stuff. When seated at our table, it was near a radiator so thankfully we got warmed up! The meal arrived in dribs and drabs - first of all two people got theirs, then a few minutes later a couple more arrived, then again we had to wait for the final two meals. Then we had to wait for the vegetables and chips, by which time the first two people had finished their meal. However, when the food did arrive it was well presented and delicious. We ordered sweets, the special being apple crumble - ideal for a cold and frosty January evening. Asked for custard with the crumble but told sorry, no custard but we could have clotted cream. Said OK but ten minutes later waiter returned "sorry, we have run out of clotted cream"! So all in all, the food we had was lovely, but considering the prices, this place needs to massively sort out its food availability and logistics in the kitchen. It has let them down badly.

We would love to have a better experience at the White Lion as we live only a mile or so from the restaurant. Our first visit must have been almost a couple of years ago when it had not been open for very long. We spent over £400 for a party of 8 and although we loved the ambience and surroundings the food and service were both terrible. Significantly, we were told AFTER the meal that the chef had left that afternoon! Because of that experience we have 'walked with our feet' and not returned until Wednesday night. We thought it only fair to give the White Lion another chance.Oh dear! nothing seems to have changed. Once again the decor and ambience with comfortable pre-dining seating are lovely. The food however was very poor. A 'two person' £14.50 starter of antipasto looked like it had been prepared by a child. It comprised of huge cubes of feta cheese and salami ( menu'd as chorizo) sliced about 10mm thick (very thick!) a couple of very small pieces of 'parma' ham and some very poor quality olives. The other starter of chicken liver pate or parfait was fine but I'm sure 'bought in' and not home made. As for the main courses, my wife and I ordered 'Shredded Confit of Duck, Pak Choi, Mange Tout, Water Cress & Rocket Salad, Orange Dressing'. We were served with thick slice of duck (the duck breasts that one buys pre prepared in most supermarkets) on a salad with no dressing. The young embarrassed waitress (no fault of hers, we actually left her a tip) muttering that the shredded duck had run out, this was not said when we ordered but as she delivered this most sub standard offering! My daughter in law ordered a chicken breast in 'creamy mash'. The mash was most certainly not creamed but poorly mashed, very lumpy potato. We had a couple of pints of beer before the meal and the Pedigree and other beer were very good. But to add insult to injury, after my son had drained his pint. he noticed 2 globules of some kind of revolting, quite large 'fat' deposits clinging to the inside of the glass. No idea what this was but enough to make you feel like retching. To be fair the lady 'maitre d' did apologise and give a second beer foc.As I say, this was most disappointing. We spent £98 on the food for four (two courses each) and 3 pints of beer, two glasses of wine. An overpriced and unedifying experience made much worse that this quiet evening was before my son and daughter in law left for a new life in Australia. I doubt that they will remember English dining with much fondness?

We have been here a number of times now and always enjoy the food. The Pie Night is especially good. Another favorite is Sunday Lunch. Generous portions and all cooked fresh so do expect a slight delay, but it is worth it. Good selection of wine too. Staff are all very helpful and friendly.

WE had a fantastic night at the White Lion. The food was excellent, the ambience a treat and the company even better.I tore into an 8oz sirloin steak and chips. It wasn't cheap at £21 with a stilton sauce but the meat was cooked to perfection. My wife Loraine loved her seafood linguine while our two friends hailed their lamb and braised beef. The service was friendly and brisk and the beautifully-decorated pub itself reeked of character and history. You'll find cheaper food elsewhere but as a complete package for a fine meal out one night this is very hard to beat.

We arrived at 5 pm on the dot on a Sunday at the end of October. Even though the restaurant is meant to close at this time, the staff were very accommodating and made us feel welcome, which we appreciated. We ordered from the Sunday 2/3 course menu. I had the mussels to start, followed by the roast sirloin of beef. Portion sizes were fantastic for the price, and the beef was succulent. We appreciated the "tower" presentation of the roast beef and trimmings, which was a nice twist on a traditional meal.My partner had the soup which, owing to the time of year, was pumpkin. We were assured by the waiter that it was made from the innards of the pumpkins on display outside, which was a nice touch. This was followed by the sea bass with mussels, which she enjoyed.Overall, very impressed. We will certainly return in the near future.

Service was exceptional and the food was perfectly cooked. I had the braised beef, red wine shallot which was beautifully presented and tasted divine. My friend opted for the confit of duck which she said was very tender and enjoyable to eat. The portion sizes are also very generous and I think are really good value for money. The atmosphere is very relaxed without being too casual. The White Lion have got it just right.

We visited the White Lion for a family meal on Saturday night. We were offered the choice of two tables, which was fine, the internal of the restaurant was decorated really nicely and tastefully. When we arrived the atmosphere was a little flat - no music playing and just a few locals propping up the bar. The wine was lovely (we chose a more expensive Sancerre, which was great, although I'm still waiting for the glass of ice that I asked for to go with it). Also, for a place that calls itself a wine bar- the choice felt a little limited - would have been nice to have even more options! The starters were lovely - the goats cheese bruschetta was really simple but delicious, and my main course of seafood linguine was also good. My family also enjoyed their meal, the food was good, nothing particularly special though, perhaps this is because we are spoilt by some other very good restaurants nearby and our expectations were higher. The service was ok, again not overly special, and quite slow to bring out mains to the full group, meaning some waited about 5 minutes to start. When we left there were more people dining but also more people at the bar. Overall, it's not bad at all, perhaps a bit more atmosphere and slightly improved service this could be great.

I first visited the White Lion earlier in the year and had a delicious meal, however the service was slow and we overheard 3 tables around us complaining. I decided to return for a celebratory meal with my cousin last month; and had a complete different experience.Upon arrival we were seated and placed our drinks order (water and a lemonade.)20 minutes later our drinks arrived without an apology for the delay; we proceeded to order 'Chicken Breast, Wrapped in Parma Ham, Garlic, Tarragon & Mushroom Stuffing, Creamy Mash & white wine sauce.I ordered a fish dish off of the specials menu; I asked the waitress what this type of fish was like but she couldn't tell me, she then asked the Chef who also didn't know.50 minutes later we were still waiting for our meals (The restaurant and bar was almost empty like the last time we came.) I asked how much longer our food would be, and we were told it would be out in 5 minutes... Another 15 minutes later the food still hadn't arrived so we asked again.. a few minutes later it arrived. My fish was fine, new potatoes raw in the middle and vegetables cold..My cousins chicken was nothing as described on the menu; It was basically a chicken breast with some mushrooms and raw onion thrown on the top and a piece of bacon underneath (Not Parma Ham, not wrapped nor stuffed and I'm not sure the onion was supposed to be raw.) My cousin then complained and sent her meal back which took 15 minutes to come back out, slightly reconstructed but still nothing as described on the menu. By this point I had finished eating..Nobody come back over to check everything was okay, no management apology nor did the bill reflect the issues we had encountered. We refused to pay the full bill and left feeling very disappointed.A couple days later I decided to call the restaurant in the afternoon; they were closed so I left a VM asking for the owner or manager to call me back to discuss the issues we had encountered.I wanted to discuss this in more detail to hopefully enable them to correct their problems so that one day we could return and have a better experience. However I did not even receive a call back, which is even more disappointing than the disastrous meal and service itself.

We really enjoyed our lunch. Good food and friendly efficient service for a reasonable mid range price.Chicken Liver Pate needs spicing up a bit. Roast Beef was very tasty, would cut three thinner slices as opposed to two thick ones, particularly good spicy horseradish. Personally I would keep the Yorkshire well away from the gravy! But these are fine tuning and personal taste.A good bottle of D'Ouro. Excellent EspressoTwo happy customers

Six of us had a "just what we wanted" light lunch at this small, characterful cafe, tucked into one of Market Harborough's historic "yards". Two had the excellent tomato and basil soup, served with a ciabatta roll; two had a delicious ciabatta roll (one gluten free) with cream cheese, figs with a touch of honey and pistachio nuts; one had a bacon-filled ciabatta roll and one had a fruit scone. We all enjoyed our lunch, and the two staff were very helpful. We thought we had made a very good choice out of the numerous options in the town and would definitely go again.

Called in today for our first visit. Received a warm welcome from staff members and were able to be seated as although it was busy lots of people had chosen to sit outdoors. Chose a carvery and we weren't disappointed, choice of 3 meats all cooked beautifully, nice choice of fresh vegetables. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and you weren't bombarded by staff as soon as you started eating asking if it was alright. We were approached but had at least had a chance to have eaten some of the meal! Will definitely be returning here again.

Many of my friends have raved about this restaurant and we had never been. So after realising it was closing, we just had to book. It was not what we expected - bright lights and bare tables. Not our thing. The arrival greeting was ok but not special and no explanation or interest in us as 1st timers. The food was good and very tasty but it was expected at the price. The wine choice was a different matter. We order one red and one white, not cheap. The white wine arrived by a very young waiter who poured the wine with no option to taste and it was NOT cold. Unbelievable! When asked why it was not cold he said there was ice in the ice bucket. Not a good start to the meal, The waitress leaned over me every time to serve my friend and they didn’t offer new cutlery for each course. Maybe they have lost interest now it’s closing, very sad as we had heard such excellent reviews.
