We went into the pub after travelling for many hours. We were tired and hungry and weren’t sure if they would let us eat as it was mid afternoon. Thankfully they welcomed us in. We had two of the specials, my husband had beef which was really good and just fell apart. I had succulent chicken with a gorgeous sauce. We both had mash that was creamy and smooth and perfectly cooked vegetables. We should not have managed pudding as we left nothing on our plates but we were tempted by a rice pudding and a roulade - just fantastic food all round. I would highly recommend.

Our party of 8 ate at the pub last night. As we left it late to book a table we pre-ordered our meals. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was extremely welcoming, the bar and waiting staff were very polite, professional and couldn't have done anymore for us. Now to the food ... some of us had starters, which were delicious. The mains were very well presented, absolutely delicious and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. They were all cooked to perfection. Desserts only two of us had room for one and yet again they said they were lovely. If we were this way again, we would definitely have a meal here again and we all thoroughly recommend it to all.

Just had a lovely birthday lunch for my daughter. They were very accommodating, friendly and the food was great. We booked in advance and gave our order for ten of us. They let us bring our cake and brought it out lit for us. Thank you so much for making my daughter’s birthday with her friends special.

Hubby booked us in here last minute and they were so accommodating! My Dad is disabled and they were so good with him. My Dad and I had had the vegetarian plant burger and it was one of the best vege burgers I have ever had (being a vege for 20 years) and my Dad is not a vege and is hard to please and loved it too! Yummy chips. Super excellent service too alongside home cooked comfort food! Thank you, it was a tricky day for us and you guys made it special!

Sunday lunch for 4. Great choice of roasts. Served piping hot. Good to find a pub serving Sunday lunch as your mum would have cooked it. None of the pretentious serving the meat on a platter or stacking layers. Reasonably priced, generous portions, good honest pub grub. Reasonably priced. Loved it.

Staying close by and had the choice of two places to eat. Decided on the White Lion and wasn't disappointed. Although busy with a party they fitted 6 of us in and was seated and orders taken within 5 minutes. The size of the meals was larger than expected and the quality was top restaurant standard. The staff were very friendly and attentive to all our needs. If ever we are back in the area we will return for something else off their extensive menu

The staff were very welcoming and attentive without being intrusive we all had different meals and were all thoroughly enjoyed. The meats were all good quality and lots of options to have with you’re mains. Despite it being a cold day we were given a warm welcome and delicious and warm food served Great job in difficult times.

I travel regularly and have seen a varying attitude and service post lockdown. This pub has appropriate and well managed measures in place but still feels welcoming, the distancing and cleanliness measures are clear to be seen whilst they have become more and more lacking in other places. The staff are very welcoming, the menu is still diverse and offers my rather fussy family some great choices, lovely Sunday lunch also served across more flexible hours than most, well worth a visit.

Recommended by the receptionist at the travel lodge. Although she did say she hadn't eaten there. On driving through the village, we were full of high hopes for a quaint little country pub. When turning the corner into the car park, it reminded me of a school. However internally its OK. Quick service at the table but warm wine. I had to ask for ice to cool my wine. Starter of pate and garlic bread with cheese was really tasty. Although lettuce wasn't necessary as the garnish on pate. Turkey lunch disappointing. Plenty turkey but the veg was bland, the pigs in blankets were far too herby and the gravy salty. (And I fear, instant). Roasties had obviously been sitting all day. They were stale, dry and not crispy. Hubbies cajun chicken burger with pineapple was extremely salty indeed and chips were frozen. Quite a disappointing experience. Glad its not my local.

Post-Lockdown Lunch at The White Lion Costerworth 24th July 2020Like many people we have just ventured out for the first time for lunch after lockdown and therefore we were both excited and a little apprehensive of what it might be like to meet friends at a pub for lunch. if you are in a similar state of mind then by all means go to the White Lion at Cosyerworth if you can, because they make the whole experience absolutely relaxing and food is also excellent! They have taken every precaution so that the waitress is masked and you take items from her tray. Condiments are brought in sachets and the whole atmosphere is one that is very welcoming and as relaxed as it can be in the circumstances. The food it was thoroughly excellent and all home-made; two of us had the beer-battered haddock which literally hungover the large plate such was the size, and the chips were proper thick home-cooked chips which were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside so they had obviously been properly double cooked. The others had the homemade pie of the day, which was declared excellent, and a filo pastry dish with cheese which was also excellent and huge in proportion. The apple pie, and ginger sponge, available with custard or ice cream or cream were both also huge and excellent as were the coffees. We were also very pleasntly surprised at how reasonably-priced everything was when the bill came too!So if you are still worried about dining out Post Lockdown and you are within driving distance of the White Lion at Colsterworth I do thoroughly recommend it as you will enjoy the experience hugely.

Came for lunch on a Friday. Very impressed with the precautions taken and given a warm welcome. Had haddock which was delicious ( PROPER chips) and others in the party had chicken and asparagus pie and the feta, butternut squash and spinach pie. The feta was replaced with Stilton ( we were asked if that was OK first) but this was pronounced 'delicious'. Portions were generous. The pudding portions were huge and also very successful. Very good value and will certainly go again. The only negative was that there was no elderflower cordial or presse available, but husband had to make do with a nice white wine instead. This was not a sacrifice.

Had lunch here, good attentive service from the bar and waiter. Standard lunch menu covering the market. Food ordered and arrived without too much delay, obviously cooked fresh. Delicious is all we could say. Sweets menu, good, and we settled on chocolate and ginger pudding. But actual board could do with a refresh. Felt a bit like that in the dining area, lampshade burnt by a bulb, tables could do with a scrub up, floor near fire door blocks loose, all table legs been bashed by chairs, bit of painting here and there wouldn’t go amiss. Pleased we went and really enjoyed the mains and sweets.Would recommend a visit to try the food.

My girlfriend and I stopped nearby overnight to break up a drive from South to North. We wanted something casual with good home cooking and what a find the White Lion was. The welcome was lovely, it was as if we were locals and the menu choice was fantastic. With a large variety of dishes and a vegan menu as well. We opted for the garlic mushrooms and Crawfish & Prawn salad to start and then the three bean chilli and the braised steak and mushrooms for main courses. The quality and quantity of the food was excellent and whenever we are travelling this way again it’s now firmly on the list of places to stop for lunch or dinner. As I said a hidden gem and well worth a visit

We dined at White Lion having been a good few times before. The starter of Brie bites was awful. I mentioned it but the waiter didn’t seem bothered at all. The mains came and I must say I don’t think I have been served such a dreadful meal in all of my days. The plate was hot enough to burn my fingers ( no prior warning given ), the food had the appearance of being thrown in and it tasted like it looked. My wife’s Chicken with Caesar salad was as bad. Must be the Chefs interpretation of what a Caesar salad is!!As said, I have been here before and looked forward to my meal but tonight just wasn’t to be. Whether the chef has been replaced or the place has changed hands I don’t know but it certainly needs improving.

My partner and I stopped for lunch today, the Ham Sandwich and Soup was really lovely. Nice Guinness, friendly service. Unfortunately a lady, who seemed to be a regular, came up, stood next to our table and conducted a loud conversation with an elderly couple. The polite thing to do would have been to either sit down with them or have a minute or two and then sit somewhere else. But no - she stood up talking and spoilt the entire 30 minute visit. We were too polite to say anything. Not great when you can't hear yourself think over lunch.

I hope this review reaches millions as it should. I’ve been sat at work in a remote area that I am unfamiliar with and tried phoning around the area to buy some food as I hadn’t eaten for the last 5 hours and wouldn’t be able to for the next 15 hours due to the nature of the job. Well Dave and his team came to the rescue and were very kind to deliver what I would like to call “Faith’s Dish” I will remember the meal for the rest of the time because I have been down on my luck for quite for some time. I hope this review demonstrates the kindness and appreciation human beings have for each other. I hope the “White Lion” gets as much business as possible from this because it was a big help.Again Thank you - Sean T Matthews

This was the 2nd time that a friend and I chose The White Lion for lunch; as previously, the welcome was warm, polite and appreciated. The normal menu options offer something for everyone, and the specials provide even more variety; the portions are larger than might be expected, clearly prepared with care from quality ingredients, and presented well. The service is efficient, and our satisfaction was checked with each course; not hurried, we felt valued and enjoyed a positive rapport with all staff we engaged with. I recall one young mans name was Ben, thank you Ben for making us feel so welcome and serving us our drinks. Whilst having a two night break-away in a nearby hotel, my wife and I decided to dine in local eateries. The White Lion was around 4 miles away and so was very convenient. Upon arrival we were greeted by the proprietor whom we found to be very personable. He introduced us to a waiter and then showed us to a well placed table. The menu contained a list of home prepared and cooked food; my wife chose to have chicken in a stilton sauce (for just £8.95) and I chose Duck with a chilli sauce (£9.95). Having eaten here last year, we planned our 4-hour-plus return trip back south on the A1 from a short break in Yorkshire with the kids around stopping here for an early dinner. If that isn't enough of a recommendation, allow me to mention the steak & stilton pie (even bigger than the portions we had last year), plenty of lovely fresh veg and a generous allocation of chips for £8.95 a head.

Dropped in for lunch on our way to Woolsthorpe. Home made pie of the day was steak and kidney, so no need to look any further down the menu. It was the business. Service was lovely and I even got table decorations and a mini birthday cake at the end. Recommended - but go hungry as the helpings are generous.

What a wonderful find. Great atmosphere, very good food at a reasonable price, warm friendly service. I had chicken stuffed with brie in a cream sauce and my wife had the lemon sole. Both were excellent! We had to wait for some time for our food but I take that as a good sign as it was obviously not pre cooked and flung in a microwave to warm up. Very difficult to fault this place at the price.

Had a lovely meal with large group including very young children. The staff were lovely and made the kid's feel very special while treating them like grownups. My daughter had a cottage pie and loved that it looked the same as the adult food. This wasn't our first visit and we will certainly be back!

This really was a great find - when tired, on a long drive back up the A1, and needing somewhere nice to eat. Don't be put off by the frontage, which the super-friendly and hospitable landlord admits still mostly resembles the front of a Whitbread 60s estate pub, despite his addition of a large extra room st the front and some stonework: the welcome is warm, the menu is pretty extensive and covers the pub classics but also more unusual dishes, the portions are large and there's a good range of real ales on hand pumps as well as the bright beers and also an extensive range of good non-alcoholic drinks. We settled for two vegetable filo pastry pies which were enormous, tasty, and packed full of spinach, feta, root vegetables, caramelised onions and more. The big bowl of chips that Jenny ordered too were completely superfluous but delicious anyway... We were also tempted by a whole range of other delights (as a vegetarian the risotto with lemon and thyme especially caught my eye) but they'll have to wait for another visit - and when it's only half a mile from the A1 there'll definitely be other occasions. The meal are amazingly good value too (around £25 for 2 large mains, crisps, chips and 3 drinks) and we also liked the sound of the whole range of activities the pub offers for the village (fundraising for the air ambulance, books for the library, Murder Mystery nights just starting, as well as the very separate and self-contained restaurant, bar and TV/football areas). Anywhere that turns over 1300 meals a week must be doing something right, too. We will most definitely be back:)

We visited the white lion on a Sunday evening although there were 8 of us we were warmly welcomed by very friendly staff the atmosphere was good, a busy restaurant doesn't always mean good food, but here the menu and special board offered a good choice and we all agreed the food was excellent. I had the chicken breast special , it was excellent, we all came again the following night, this time I had the pub special pie, steak and mushroom, it was huge, and delicious, well worth a try. This place is one of the best I have visited

It was a Monday evening and we were tired and hungry. We didn't expect to be so welcome. The pub was very busy with many people, eating. However we were accommodated to a nice table. We didn't have to wait long for our meal which was very good. Impressed considering how busy they were. Theank you.

We went there after a visit to Woolsthorpe Manor, and all meals for 7 of us at The White Lion down the road were superb. I had the rack of lamb, and other members of the group raved about the pork in mushrooms, the rump steak, the fish and chips, lemon sole and burger. The chips were cooked just as I asked, a golden brown - none of those anaemic ones you so often get nowadays. The only slight moment was when we realised there didn't seem quite enough chips and the delicious mix of vegetables for all of us to get a good chomp, but another bowl of each was brought overwithout demur. We are thinking of making another trip soon, even though it is 45 minutes down the road.

My husband and I visited here on a recommendation from another pub that was closed on a Monday. Very glad we took a chance as we had a great evening and thoroughly enjoyed our food. It is best not to arrive too late as some of the favourites on the menu were sold out by the time we got there! The pub is not quite the quintessential local you look for in a village but what it lacks in kerbside appeal it more than makes up for with its great choice of food and friendly welcoming staff! The ambience inside is very nice and there is plenty of seating. The menu has a great range on offer to tempt any taste and we found both the meals and drinks were a very reasonable price. The portion size is generous and beautifully home cooked. Definitely worth a try!If you find my post helpful please take a moment to give me a helpful vote thank you

Visiting the area as not local, we came across this fantastic pub 27th August...We didn't have a table booked as on the cuff...we got seated quickly and went on to enjoy the best pub meal in a very long time....we can highly recommend the Prawn and Crayfish Cocktail, Beef and Stilton pie, Beer battered Hadcock and a truly scrummy Toffee and Waffle Cheesecake...In a small village this place is a true diamond and a must visit, good sized portions and qood value..Staff are very welcoming and knowledgeable when asking for recommendations on the menu...well done to all the staff making our visit so enjoyable 10/10

5 of us just had fabulous Sunday lunch. Selection and generosity of vegetables amazing. We all wanted a dessert but just didn’t have room! Next Sunday going with 2nd grandson, going to have a smaller main course so I can have pud. Very friendly hosts and conscientious waitress. 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Lovely beer garden, great place to meet with friends for a drink. Although pretty expensive. However, you pay for the atmosphere aswell. Can go winter and summer and sit outside as they have heaters!

There’s an argument that you shouldn’t recommend good place as next time you come there are no free tables. Saying that the bacon sandwich was the best I have had in a long time and the pancakes fresh and cooked to perfection. We’ll be back!
