White Horse Inn in Mid Devon

We arrived to a very friendly welcome from the landlord, locals and the pub dog Booboo. The landlord said it was just him working so the food might be a bit slower than usual. He needn't have worried as I have had far slower service elsewhere but a nice touch to let us know. The drinks were a good selection of ales and ciders. We whiled away the time chatting to the regulars and landlord and fussing over the Frenchy Booboo. So onto the food. WOW, JUST WOW. This was some of the best food we have ever had in a pub. Amazing flavours and cooked to perfection. We left wishing we had found this place earlier in our holiday.

I've eaten here loads of times, food is great and Bob is a very friendly landlord. The Sunday lunch is fantastic, proper plateful of food, only downside is that you might need a nap afterwards.

The best Sunday roast by far. We've eaten here a few times and have always been impressed with the quality of the food, the beers and the friendly welcome of both the landlord, staff and locals. Dog friendly. Would highly recommend.

The food was excellent, one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. We w joyed the food so much we even booked several other nights if our holiday a must place to go if you visit Bampton. Do not ge put off by the pub. The food is nothing less than excellent! 5 star food !

We popped in for a late evening drink, place was bustling with young locals . Owner and clientele made us feel welcome and were friendly, we didn’t try the food but the pizzas looked good. A traditional no thrills pub that will serve a good drink and a bite to eat in a good atmosphere

Bob and his wife Leila are so friendly and welcoming. Food was cooked freshly and it was absolutely amazing, Bob clearly knows food and how to get the best out of everythinghe cooks. Bob went out of his way to accommodate me being a vegetarian, even offering to cook dishes not even on the menu. If your visiting Bampton this is a must local pub to visit for a gorgeous meal with a friendly, welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. Can't recommend highly enough.

Seriously great steaks from a chef who is clearly passionate about good ingredients and local sourcing and knows what he's doing in the kitchen. Really friendly atmosphere - lovely place to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We came across the White Horse Inn whilst staying in Bampton. Bob and his wife Leila couldn't be more friendly and really went out of their way to make our visit memorable. The food was fantastic but the Jamaican pancakes were out of this world. Everything is freshly cooked from scratch. PERFECT!! Well worth a visit or two. 5*****

Wow the food is amazing, great quality and generous portions. A hidden gem with friendly service, I’ve never seen so much topping on a pizza.

Whilst on holiday recently in Morebath we (3 of us) decided to book a meal here. First night my friend’s better half had the ribs, we had ham, eggs and chips. We were entertained by a local couple and Bob, our congenial host. his total knowledge of food and preparation is unbelievable. The second night we had sweet and sour pork with rice. It was out of this world. He could teach a few takeaways a lot. Long live Bob. The premises are a drinking style pub with great food, menu changes every 4 days, and we were accepted with a warm welcome from Bob and the locals.

Wonderful welcome. Excellent food. Cooked fresh to order. Don’t be out off by outside/forest impressions. This is a hidden gem. By far the best in Morebath. Definitely highly recommended. Very knowledgable chef.

We were looking for somewhere to grab some food last minute on a Sunday and we found this little gem! The food was out of this world and all of our plates were bare at the end! Amazing quality food and Bob is an outstanding chef ! Can’t wait to come back :)

Only went in as nowhere else open on a Sunday evening. Decor a throw back to a bygone era (though not sure which ...) - but food surprisingly good given the setting. All rather odd ...

Have to admit we chose The White Hart by default as it was the only pub in Bampton open for food on a Monday night (that we hadn't already been to). The food and service were amazing. Particularly recommend the goat curry.

Wow ! It’s ha rd to know what to say about this pub . The first impression maybe hides this gem ... such a lovely old building that might stop some from eating here but please please try it . Bob the landlord has travelled far and wide on his cooking journey and clearly knows what he is doing... we booked 6pm for 2 adults with 4 fussy kids . I can honestly say I have never seen them enjoy a meal so much in ten years. All four plates clean in minutes. They are completely happy to indulge any food you would like if they have it , the homemade pizza was delicious and huge and the beef burgers were amazing homemade giant beasts ! The landlord and his partner were very friendly. we would not hesitate to come back if in the area again. And they are completely Covid safe too . Thank you Bob wish it wasn’t our last night :( hope to visit again Best wishes for the future Sam and her fussy tribe of vegetarians and kids !

We went to the White Horse as we checked out their menu the night before and it looked really nice. When we arrived there was a very nice land lord who advised us of the safety measures which where in place and we all used hand sanitizer. We ordered drinks and Bob (land lord) told us his menu. Our kids chose burgers and pizza. Myself a macaroni cheese on a pizza. Bob came out with the kids food first and it was proper homemade burgers and pizza. The kids ate everything on their plates and said how tasty everything was. Then out came my pizza and it was the most amazing pizza and it tasted phenomenal. I would highly recommend this place as the food was excellent and the husband and wife team were super friendly.

Very cosy pub landlord very friendly Clare safety measures in place to keep social distancing. Hand gel available, service good not that many people in pub but very pleasant atmosphere.

This year we decided to give this pub a go for a Christmas Party which involved a party of 30. Right from the outset Bob the landlord was fully on board with what we wanted and gave us a good and varied choice of menu to choose from. I chose the Pork Kahuni with coconut rice a Japanese inspired dish which was absolutely marvellous. Bob and his team made every effort for our evening and I thank them for the efforts. As an aside you can get a fabulous freshly made pizza either as an eat in or takeaway option and that’s well worth anyone’s time.

A traditional village pub where the locals are very friendly and welcoming. We ate here several times during our stay in Bampton. The Sunday lunch was very large and perfectly cooked. The calzone was the best I have ever tasted and me and my wife shared a tomahawk steak that was unbelievable. Speak to Bob (the landlord) as he has some secrets tucked away in his kitchen.

The White Horse Inn we found to be very friendly and a very relaxed atmosphere. The landlord fitted us in for sunday lunch although he was fulley booked, The food portion was massive and it was delicious. We will be back, Full marks to the landlord.

A relaxed and friendly pub that we visited quite by chance and I'm glad that we did. The pizzas were excellent and the beef pie had a proper suet crust - delicious. The landlord was friendly too.

Been here a couple of times the nicest pub very friendly and welcoming and the food is amazing, All home made by the lovely landlord the pizzas are quite honestly the best I have had and I lived in Italy for 5 years ! Definitely a must try but pizzas after 6pm before that roast dinners which being vegertarian he did a lovely roast very willing adjust food to suit needs .

Thought we would give this one a try as not far from where we live. What a treat, pizzas were amazing. Fresh, tasty and large. Landlord was chatty and welcoming. Nice local atmosphere that’s welcomes everyone and involves all in conversation. Well worth a visit. We will be back!

By far the best steak I’ve ever had. Must visit here. 10 times better than the swan and don’t even have to book! Music on polite service and great hospitality

Moved into the area recently and highly recommend this pub. Always get a warm welcome and nothing seems too much trouble for them to ensure you enjoy your visit. The food is excellent quality and value and whilst they serve traditional pub food (the Sunday roasts are outstanding) also get a good range of dishes with inspiration from around the world. The landlord is also a chef who has worked all over the globe, so perhaps should be no surprise. He has recently added a new range of pizzas to accompany the more conventional ones they still do and I thoroughly recommend the butter chicken pizza (will be trying the rib eye steak one next)

The landlord is welcoming and so are the locals. The food is delicious, they do a great Sunday lunch, very generous portions, it’s so good I never have room for pudding (which is unlike me). It’s dog friendly and dad friendly, my father loves it here and insists on going whenever he comes to visit. On a cold night the fire will be going and there’s a pool table and a jukebox. There’s nothing I don’t like about this place.

Can recommend the Haddock and chips and the Plaice. Delicious ! Nice atmosphere in the pub and friendly and helpful staff.

The Landlord reopened his kitchen on a Sunday evening just for us and cooked a delicious roast beef dinner. Good beer from St Austell and cider from s local farm. Think this is the Bampton locals pub and we were pleased to be part of it.

Popped in for a pint and a game of pool, got chatting with the owner and stayed for several drinks and a meal. Homemade pizza perfectly cooked, well priced. Full of locals and a very welcoming place.

We were back in the area and fancied repeating our visit of earlier in the year for a traditional Sunday roast dinner - and we were not disappointed! Again a lovely traditional Sunday roast with lots of superb veg, meat and gravy - and plenty of it!

We stopped here for lunch in our drive through exmoor. We stopped in the beer garden, I went inside to get food and did not feel the staff were overly friendly or helpful. I had a pork baguette and it was cold which I was surprised at. Overall we were not that impressed, which was a shame as the beer garden was lovely in the sun.

Not easy to get a meal in a pub in the middle of a Sunday afternoon but the staff were very willing and able. In fact, the ham, egg and chips was a cut above average and very good value indeed. Very much a 'locals' pub I think with a steady flow of customers.

Went to this pub twice whilst staying in Bampton. On both visits food was excellent. The staff was friendly and will definitely visit again when down this way.

Came upon by chance doesn't look much from outside but inside traditional spotlessly clean staff very friendly food absolutely delicious owner Bob a well travelled Fantastic chef visited twice in three nights and will definately return when in devon again.

We totally found this place by accident, whilst walking around Bampton with the dog popped in for a drink and chose this place because it seemed on the outside like a proper local pub. Had a nice welcome from the bar staff and although at the time it wasn't busy trade picked up as Sunday lunchtime went on. Settled down to read the papers with a pint and then we say the food - it looked superb! We ordered 2 Sunday roasts which when they came out were lovely and reminded me of home cooked which is for us 100% the way we want it! Loads of different veg, great thick slices of meat and tasty gravy. We really enjoyed it and the sticky toffee pudding afterwards too. We live an hour away but we would drive here again for food no problem at all.

Well this place took us by surprise. It is run by a couple for whom nothing appears to be too much trouble, as was shown when Bob, the landlord, said he would cook for us even though it did look as if he wasn't planning to do food. One of our party had liver and onions, cooked specially to order as she has a gluten allergy. Bob was completely aware of how to cook for coeliacs, and produced a delicious meal that was one of the best my friend had had in a long time. I had fish and chips, and it wasn't the usual pub offering of fish in a hard orange shell; it was proper freshly prepared fish and home cut chips, with homemade tartare sauce. The sticky toffee pudding (with extra sauce!) was a real treat, and the prices were extremely reasonable.

Don't be fooled by the rather traditional pub interior, this is a hidden gem.

Rude and felt 'cliquey' and put me off even setting foot in there. Tried to go in and a woman abruptly told us 'closed' then shut the door on us at 9pm. Wouldn't bother with this pub.

Having moved to Bampton in January we decided to check out the local pubs and this is by far the best. As soon as we walked in we were made to feel welcome and soon felt like locals. It has a proper pub atmosphere and everyone is so friendly. Oh and the prices are really good aswell.

Classic Devon town locals pub, nothing wrong with it at all. Good to pop in for a pint, managers seem to be new to the trade. Hope they survive. Don't be put off from what the outside looks like, it a nice local pub.

Really lovely pub with welcoming and friendly staff. They were really accommodating, making us chips and jacket potato even through it was 1/2 hr after they stopped serving food.

We had such a funny night at the Country and Western themed karaoke, lovely staff and the local people are so friendly. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely pub with great homely atmosphere, we were made to feel very welcome, and the home cooked food was delicious, the pub land lord and land lady took the time to chat, and after sending our compliments to the cook, she took the time to come out and chat with us. The food was well cooked, great portion size, and extremely good value for money. Husbands favourite was the lamb shanks, delicious. And don't forget to try the Belgium waffle with ice cream and raspberry coulis, yum!!!

When we arrived at the White Horse, we were overwhelmed by what a fine establishment it was. After a long day of trekking the White Horse provided good quality Ales and appropriate food. The staff were incredibly friendly and we were fortunate to meet the owner who was great company with an incredible jaw line.

Felt very inviting when we walked in. Was made very welcome and the food was very tasty. Sampled the ales and enjoyed the atmosphere in this very quaint Inn. Bar staff very friendly, welcoming and efficient. I will certainly return.

This is a fantastic pub. don't knock it! we enjoy live entertainment, juke box, pool table (for young and older). It is a most welcoming inn. The home cooked food is excellent and children are catered for. Please don't knock a local business, we don't all want a local business to close, like the banks and shops. We don't all just want gastro pubs. The Inn is spotless clean , besides which there has been a lot of hard work and investment.

Bampton is an attractive small town on the edge of Exmoor and is well worth a diversion. It has two other pubs of note, both selling good food (at higher prices) and both fully booked on a Saturday night. We tried them both first before visiting this pub, which does not go out of its way to promote itself! However, we were very pleased to have discovered the White Horse Inn which has an interesting history and is a real pub with locals at the bar drinking beer brewed in Wiveliscombe, just a few miles away. The White Horse has a modest but classic pub menu - we both had lasagne for £6.50 which tasted just as good as if Mum had made it (which she had!). While not worth a special journey, the White Horse Inn is well worth a visit if in the area, especially if you prefer a real pub selling food and good local beer, rather than a "gastro" pub with fancy menu and prices.
